Actually there were many people in areas colonised by the vikings who spoke Norn the language from which modern scandinavian languages are derived. In fact there was still someone able to speak it until the middle of the 20th century in one of the remote islands of Shetland. Although from a modern perspective i agree with you. Some interesting points being brought up though as a result of this. We can all always learn.

The unicorn symbolised purity and innocence, it also stood for masculinity, power and courage. It was such a free, wild animal that it had to be chained, only a virgin maiden could tame it. It would choose to die rather than be taken alive. The unicorn was the enemy of the lion, the lion is the national animal of England.

Count Vanderhosen the world is extremely hateful of Americans for no reason, and America has never had a history of anti-Europeanism or extreme xenophobia. To this day, opinion polling shows American opinions of its allies are majority positive, opinion polling of America from its allies is majority negative. Any imputations of arrogance or bad character thrown at Americans is really projection stemming from insecurity of American cultural dominance. I mean, compare the “what do Americans think of” videos to the “what do ____ think of America” videos - the Americans are almost always emphatically more complimentary and positive, the foreigners are almost always negative and insulting - even the “positives” of America that they list, if they force themselves to name any, are always backhanded and condescending.

In terms of why the unicorn is the national animal of Scotland, this is a reference to the Pictish roots of our culture. Scotland has a mix of gaelic, picts and druids, along with other influences such as vikings, saxons etc. But back in the ancient past it was predominantly Pictish. The unicorn symbolically represents that aspect. I think someone mentioned how it combats the lion, and that's England. Scotland has two flags, the saltire, which is the blue with white Cross, which is often regarded as being the peoples flag. The white cross is for the patron Saint of Scotland, St Andrew, who was crucified on a diagonal cross. The second flag traces itself to the early 14th century, and is called the lion rampant. This is a red lion with a yellow background, and was the coat of arms for Robert the Bruce, who became King of Scotland after defeating England at Bannockburn in 1314. The symbol of the lion and the unicorn, I believe stems from the crowns of England and Scotland joining in James 1st (6th of Scotland). The image is of a lion and a unicorn, and if you look closely, the unicorn has been chained...
@danielmacintyre41704 жыл бұрын
It’s chained even when use in Scotland before the union. The reason for the chains is because a unicorn is untameable to everyone, although it willfully bows down and surrenders to the might of Scottish kings

The unicorn appears in heraldry across Europe from early times. In Scotland, it isn't so much the 'national animal' but appears on royal coats of arms - a bit like the Seal of the President of the United States featuring an eagle. The most prominent example, is the unicorn appearing on the coat of arms of HRH Queen Elizabeth(called a supporter), relating to Scotland. The lion on the opposite side relates to England. This coat of arms can be seen worldwide wherever the Queen is head of state - even on the uniform of the most distinguished Royal Mounted Police of Canada. Before Scotland and England formed the Kingdom of Great Britain (subsequently the United Kingdom) the Royal coat of arms of Scotland featured two unicorns (no lion). The British flag features the blue and white of the Scottish flag.
