Exactly, a lot of big clubs had a period where tons of money was pumped into them and they became successful and big for it. Now decades have passed for some of them their fans either have forgotten, or weren’t around when it happened. The authenticity of Clubs as evolving entities with mostly fixed players is destroyed by buying-in top players to boost that Club. Those same players could, in theory, be bought in their entirety by another Club to boost it, likewise. It then all boils down to who can pay the most, rather than play as a fixed local Team whose development and progress is followed with greater interest.

As for authentic clubs dont be fooled, man utd have gone bust on several occasions and wrote the book on sugar daddies. As for arsenal also went bust acquired a very rich owner and paid their way into the top flight after finishing 5th in the second tier leapfrogging the teams above them. Spurs bought the double of league title and fa cup in 1961. When it comes to lpool they were floundering around the 2nd tier for almost a decade till they were taken over by the littlewoods pools empire which enabled them to go on a trophy buying spree. Of the 5 clubs who broke away in 1992 the only club described as an historical "giant" was Everton. By the way Manchester City have won that historical treble as Champions (the only club in England to do so) by spending less than chelsea, utd, arsenal etc. They are dubbed an oil club but they were actually bought through banking. Neither are they owned by a state like Newcastle they have Arab, American and Chinese owners.

These thing are cyclical. Since the proper broadcast of Football began there has been a rotation of nations dominating the transfer market. Italy, Spain and England have all taken turns in the role. Although Todd Boehly at Chelsea is something new with an apparent view of players as an investment asset to be developed and sold for profit where as most owners have sought to buy success. Whilst there is Oil Money at Man City and Newcastle it can also be found in Europe at clubs like Paris Saint Germain and Girona FC (which is part of the City Group). The American Money In the Premiership at Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Everton, Fulham and Ipswich may be the culturally more significant with many owners who aren't used to fluctuating revenues based on performance resulting in European qualification or Relegation being involved. An easy way to pick your English Team might just be to see where the owners of your NFL Team are invested.

If you're going to pick a team I'd go for one of the original members of the first football league (1888-89). The 12 teams in this were: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. To avoid having people say that you're jumping on the bandwagon I'd rule out current PL teams (Villa, Everton and Wolves). Accrington no longer exist (they aren't the same as Accrington Stanley). So that leaves: Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke and West Bromwich Albion. For no better reason I'd go for Preston as they were the very first league champions. (I do support one of the above eight teams and it's not Preston who I have no affinity with).

While we did last a good 5 years, a subsequent relegation means that we’re now stuck in the Championship with far less money to spend. Yet even with that the average attendance in the Premier League is about 23,000. The Premier league are responding to the red cartels Manchester United Liverpool and Arsenals protestations against their fight to establish their supremacy once more.The red cartel undoubtedly have an strong influence over the Premier league, there is a simple equation that sums up professional sport across the globe Organisation + Humans + Money = Corruption. @djskippa75202 ай бұрын
It’s simple. And I will lay my cards out as a Brentford supporter. The Premier league is effectively run by the top six or at least their influence. Because of its growth around the world The Prem only really promotes those top clubs. This is because it’s those clubs that sell TV packages to the US, Asia and Africa. If you go to any airport or UK sport outlet you will only see those clubs kits sold. It’s a vicious circle. If you only promote those clubs, only those clubs are in demand, their support base increases and therefore the demand to watch only those teams. The smaller clubs, despite their much more impressive achievements of reaching the top flight, with little funds, will never be able to compete with the mega clubs for the top place. You then get the tourists from abroad at the likes of Liverpool, Man City etc, which exacerbate the issue. It was tradition to support your local club when I was you, but now you see kids in Portsmouth wearing Man City kits. Just wouldn’t have happened 30 years ago. Kids watch TV now and it’s just the top six being pushed down their throats, not their local team. It’s simple marketing and math.

They started to pay more and more for players, now they pay silly money for bang average. The only teams in the EPL getting good players are the ones owned by Oil Barons from the middle east, the rest are having to spend to try and keep themselves in the top league and often get financial problems if they're relegated. It's the same in other "Top leagues" Where one or two clubs have vastly more resources than the rest, Man City investigated for how it gets its money, PSG won the French league so many years in a row, Man City maybe Liverpool at the moment expected to win it most seasons, Barca or Madrid in Spain, Bayern Munich wins German league all the time, It happens in Scotland and yet Celtic aren't owned by oil barrons from the middle east. They're a well run business with no financial problems. Loads of money is destroying football.

If u don't want to support an oil club then I can't help but recommend my club Aston Villa who are a traditionally massive club in English football who initially struggled to compete with the big teams in the last 10 years but thanks to a new manager have managed to disrupt the traditional big teams and finish 4th last season despite spending far less. Unfortunately it isn't easy but Villa are giving it a good go but tbh some of the new spending rules just protect the big clubs more as they already have the money and best players and now smaller clubs aren't allowed to invest like they did 10-15 years ago so they have a massive advantage. Our new coach has managed to bring Villa to new heights without excessive spending and try to challenge the biggest teams despite the new PSR rules which make it almost impossible by improving players who have been at the club for years like our captain John Mcginn who has been at the club for 7 years and has seen us play in the championship and now been promoted and then qualified for the champions league along with some smart signings for players who were yet to catch the attention of big clubs.

The main way you could do something about it is the distribute all of the wealth in football more equally, but that will never happen in any sort of meaningful way, because there are too many clubs at the top end who will threaten to break away if they don't get to keep all the money for themselves. The Premier League was presented in this video as the saviour of English football, but in reality, it was the big clubs basically breaking away from the rest of the football league and wanting to keep all the money for themselves. And then the expanded Champions League, which was basically designed to allow the biggest clubs to qualify every year and again, keep all of the money for themselves. There used to be one place in the European Cup per country, but with the Champions League, the bigger countries got more places, and higher seeding, meaning they got easier draws. All of this has been designed to consolidate the top of European football, and it's worked perfectly. You basically have the same teams qualifying every year, getting far more money than the rest of the league as a result, allowing them to buy the best players, and qualify again and again. And so when something like Financial Fair Play comes along, surprise surprise, it is also hijacked by the already established clubs to prevent any threats to their position.

Real Madrid have always been one of the richest clubs, and still pay the most for the top players Many English footballers used to go abroad to play for rich European clubs ,like Madrid , Juventus, and Milan . English teams were more successful in the European Cup / Champions League , when they had few foreign players , and much smaller budgets Money doesn't necessarily buy success , as is now being proven with Man Utds and Chelseas demise . Nevertheless, I think there should be limits to clubs finances , and how much they can pay players Some get over £ 200,000 per week .

I hate to use an old gaming meme, but the other leagues just need to "git gud". If you make choices that restrict your financial competitiveness in favour of sporting traditions, then great. But then don't whine when you fall behind financially. It's not the job of the Premier League to be shitter. It's the job of other leagues to be better.

The Premier league isn't ruining football. It was ruined the minute sky bought it. It's also not the best league in the world. It's the most over hyped.

If sports start to be about money, I'm out. I like local teams playing other local teams. But what's "local" if you hire players from around the world? I would change the rules. If a team is called Bayern München, the players should be from Munich. Not moved there, briefly, for one season. Sorry, professional athletes of any kind: I'm not interested.

Hi Joel, Half of the English Premier League ("EPL") teams are now majority American owned. Americans have also bought into lower level English Football Teams and also into European teams. EPL success is now an American success story. Americans tend to have deeper pockets than Brits. Also watching you Americans you tend to see promotion whereas as Brits we see relegation. There are some Americans that have down well such as the owners of Ipswich Town FC. Others have made real losses such as at Huddersfield Town AFC. American owners like EPL because of its world wide coverage. The conundrum is how do we monetise this audience, like in American sports. American is so deeply invested in football (soccer) that the world wide export of football (soccer) is now an export of American culture. Dominic

Sadly, American involvement in British sports is more insidious trying to change the core principles like promotion and relegation. It’s all about the money.

Joel, mate. You should look into teams from Yorkshire. You have friends, in York & you have visited York on atleast 2 occasions, that I know of. York City FC play in the 5th division of the English football league pyramid (Nations League). Or you should look into Leeds United FC, probably one of the biggest club in Yorkshire. Also they're probably the most famous club, from the county. Another couple would be Sheffield United or Sheffield Wednesday, both are stepped in history.
@antonycharnock29932 ай бұрын
No. He needs to follow a real Yorkshire club like Rotherham and experience the grittiness and real ups and downs of a proper family/community focussed club. Before Man City got rich with oil money one of Rotherhams best players Shaun Goater went there. I also remember when Barnsley made it into the premier league in the late 90s. I was at uni in Manchester at the time. I don't think that will happen again.

@@antonycharnock2993 Cheers for the reply. I'm an Aussie, so I'm only going off the knowledge I have acquired over the many years of watching & following EPL & Football in general. Barnsley are in League 1 if I'm not mistaken. So they have a chance of getting back into the PL. Ipswich double promo got them back into the PL. As soon as you mentioned Rotherham, I thought I do know the name & I've heard bit & pieces about them. My knowledge on them is severely lacking. I will have to do a deep dive of my own into them. Cheers, mate. P.s. I've been a Spurs supporter since 1980 when they won the FA Cup & backed it up in 1981.
