Hello Charlie! Hey thanks for the love on the vid. I (algorithmically) discovered your channel through this very reaction and now I'm a fan because I like your work. THANKS! - So I lived in Germany for just over three years while serving in the US military. Left, for another five years and separated the service, then returned to Germany as a civilian in 2016. So you were close, total nine years. - You would be doing VERY well to move to The Netherlands. I've been there more times than any other place in Europe. - I won't become or start a PRIMARY reaction channel, only incorporate a few on the main channel. - Finally...IF ONLY Apple was to send me product.😞 - Thanks again, my friend. Take care.👍🏾

Did you notice that the mal is not just surrounded by a huge parking lot.... so you can have a nice walk do something outside and grab a bite to eat inside.... I believe thats what is one of the biggest problem here in North america... the parking lot obsession.... city centers look like crap compared.

Funny thing; USians always tell me how bad the service is at fast food joints, and how much worse it would get if they unionized, etc. etc. And here I am in one of those 'socialist' countries where we do all those things USians think will make workers lazy and etc. ... and I've always had excellent service...

I live like 20 minutes away from the Centro, but havn't been there for the last 3 years. Outside the mall they have a nice promenade with many bars and restaurants and a big cinema next to it. As far as I know and nothing has changed, the Centro Mall might be the biggest mall in Europe. In my early 20s we were there at least 1-2 times a month. Mostly for the cinema and drinks afterwards. But many cities have "outside malls" or "Fußgängerzonen" with the shops on groundlevel and apartments on the upper floors. If you move to the Netherlands, Oberhausen is not that far away and easily reachable by train.

German Malls still can't compete with "Einkaufstraßen" shopping streets like "Zeil" or "Schildergasse" are by far the economic centers of there city. Because those are perfectly integrated into the city, while Malls are giant buildings that need space to be build and therefore are more often at the edge

You'd think, but there are some German cities who had the bright idea of putting several malls within walking distance of the city center and then were all surprised that their Einkaufsstraße died...

But its not like Germany is beating anything. Almost all Malls have 20-40% closed stores. Many malls closed down already. Only the big and most famose malls still work fine. Same decline in Einkaufstraßen which getting more and more empty. You are forced to buy online because stores save money by having less storage place so often you can get what you want online.

Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt are two old-time department stores that predate the malls. It's comparable to Macy's. Kaufhof and Karstadt merged about two decades ago because the concept of department stores was dying (and still is). There are still a few stores open but basically only because no buyer has been found yet and the parent company keeps them alive for some reason.

If you move to the Netherlands, Oberhausen isn`t too far off from the Netherlands, like for example Venlo, a nice town in the Netherlands near the german border, it`s around a 2 hour drive to Oberhausen Centro Mall. Considering moving to the Netherlands, a town near the german border, many dutch people go to Germany because Gas is much cheaper and also are the convenience stores.

So total 7-10 years? This gave me 80's feels all over!! Chris does reactions once in a while. He is more of a content creator instead of just reactions. Chris got it wrong and he corrected it in text, it was Mr. Chicken. Nordsee is German for North Sea. Not Norwegian food, sorry. Fish restaurant. Sorry Charlie, I'm a Mac guy. Gotta love malls, in Belgium there is the Wijnegem shopping center, looks super cool and it's always busy so can't see that declining any time soon. In Hilversum there is a smaller mall in the middle of the shopping area, so you have the mall, outside there is streets with shops and restaurants, and last we also have "woonmalls" which is a mall with furniture/kitchen/bathroom shops, the one in Rotterdam Alexandrium is especially unique because they built the mall around an old house, and now that house is used by one shop as a big display for their products, it's called the "Polderhuis".

Used to be called CentrO, There is even a little Legoland next door, Funnily we did not go to a Mall to hang out, but strolled through the shopping streets (outside), though department stores (way more common then), sitting on the swings on a playground at night getting Take away pizza, because they always gave a free bottle of wine with it. Because mostly we were broke :-) Ahh, the 90ties! Grew up in Essen, a neighboring city of Oberhausen. and just a stone through away from Venlo/NL.

My brother and I went there last week, before COVID we'd go every 3 months or so to do some shopping there. It's very big and the + is the free parking and toilets. Very clean. It's about a 90 min drive from the Netherlands, Utrecht. Before Covid it was just called "Centro" but it seems Westfield took it over and is now Westfield Centro. The food court has been remodeled with more places to sit upstairs and an escalator.

So this mall is very big and you can do everything there incl. concerts in a arena direct behind. There is also lots of free parking, a big cinema, a park, a musical theater near by and so on. Oberhausen belongs to the „Rhein/Ruhr metropole“ with around 10M people in the sorounding area. Also it is near to the NL border and espec. at Xmas every second person there is dutch even with dutch signs etc. We go to shop in Venlo in the Netherlands and the dutch come to Oberhausen and Düsseldorf in Germany because - why not? 😃

The big malls in Germany are doing good. It's the small ones that are suffering. I live on the outskirts of Berlin and some of the smaller malls out here lost half the stores in the last 5-10 years. Most kept a super market, a clothes store and 1-2 "dollar stores". Add a shop for cell phones, a flower shop and a Dönerbude, you get the base of those malls. There is also often i special store per small mall, a bowling alley, a small cinema, an electronics store or something similarly large. That thing is keeping that mall alive, even if half the shops are empty.

We had two smaller malls in our region in germany. 1 was there for at least 20 years and 1 for 10 and both malls had to close because their owners where greedy people that didnt care for the mall. They doubled the rent for storeowners and didnt put in any money to keep the mall clean or intact. Both malls where closed due to storeowners loosing interest due to the high rents and the malls being dangerous because nobody cared for renovation. Its really sad honestly. There where a lot of jobs in it, 1 of the 2 malls had multiple restaurants (with an absolutely awesome greek, like seriously, i travelled around the world already but never did i have greek food that good), a hall for ice scating, a bowling centre, small casinos, a cinema, multiple bars and discos, grocery stores, electronic stores, clothing stores, even a gas station and a mcdonalds nearby. The whole town was build around that mall it feels like, and now its gone. I am living in a rural area in germany and interest for a mall was definitely there from the people, let me tell you that. But the mall owners ruined every bit of that.

The Jetsons are known worldwide, although I'm guessing that younger people won't really know them, sadly. They're amazing, I loved watching that. I can see the appeal of a shopping mall, being indoors when it rains sounds pretty sweet... but our city centers are basically the same as these large shopping malls, just all outside. I think I prefer that, even though our dear sweet Dutchie land does leave you in soaked clothes a lot of the time while you're out shopping. I do believe we have shopping malls in bigger cities. Not where I live though, we're too tiny for something like that. I think I'm okay with it staying that way.

That is the Centro Mall in Oberhausen. It is very american and was intended to be. It draws a lot of the dutch over the border. It is not common, we have some malls in germany but they are rare. This spot is already filled with our inner citys. Most inner citys consists of hundreds of shops , bars, restaurant ,etc. The are located around the main train stations and normaly pedestrian zones. Malls take up a lot of space, so it is rare that an investment group can get enough money together to build one. Spacing is a hugh difference, germany is smaller than most US States. Our population density is very high. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3S3oIB6esaYnNE Recommend this for a reaction: Warning! Style is satire and the content is pretty heavy.

Nice to see Charlie reacting to CLR! (subscribed to both channels and of course to American Girl Reacts as well...! Keep the spirit! The Jetsons, The Flintstones ("Familie Feuerstein"), Futurama, Captain Future, Looney Toons, Mr. Rossi sucht das Glück (Mr. Rossi Looking For Luck) were also shown in Germany. Also Bonanza, High Chaparral, Star Trek, U.F.O., Lassie, Flipper, Daktari, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Eine Amerikanische Familie (An American Family) or The Waltons. Not sure how malls are doing in general as there's only a small one in my local town (120.000 people). There's something I would consider a mall at Nürnberg Hbf (Nuremberg Central Station) in Bavaria and several in Berlin. What I know for sure is that malls in Russia are on the decline (at least for now) as prices are skyrocketing, people have less money/buying power, there are or will be lay-offs and many western brands are pulling out.

So, you have "Malls" like Centro in Oberhausen in smaller version in bigger cities. But what you got in nearly every small city in Germany are pedestrian zones. They are like small open air "Malls" with backeries, shops, cafes, food stores, ice stores etcetera. This are designated streets in the center of the cities where you go to meet friends or buy stuff and where cars are forbidden. Pedestrian zones are a big and old part of german shopping culture and a city is unthinkable without it. Pedestrian zones are close to the market place and often it is also where festivals are located. But I don't think pedestrian zones are a german invention.

German here. I find malls to be absolutely boring. You can go to one in Berlin, Hamburg and Karlsruhe and you'll always find the same stores: MediaMarkt or Saturn (which for kickers belong to the same parent company) for electronics, Thalia for books, certainly an H&M and other typical mall fashion stores. Then of course you have your italian ice cream shop and your pizzeria and probably a McD or a BK in the food corner, right beside Nordsee (sea food). And even you nerd shop like Elbenwald can be found in every larger mall. They hold no attraction to me unless I specifically need something.

I don't like such centers/malls. I prefer the Zeil (Frankfurt shopping street) by far. I always feel trapped in malls like this We didn't need malls in youth. We just took the train or bus into town. Or we had our clubs (football, tennis, handball, horseback riding) we had a lot to choose from. Or we met in the ice cream parlor and went to the banks of the Main to chill. ooh palm trees grow here too, outside.

That is changing in Munich. It is precisely because of the pandemic that the pedestrian zones are no longer doing so well, which is why the malls are doing badly at the moment. But Pasing now has a mall right by the train station, and it's well frequented. And the big department stores in Munich that went bankrupt are now being converted into malls, but with other areas besides dining and shopping. There should be something for every age. But malls are usually only pleasant when the weather outside is bad. The pedestrian zones are better for nice weather. And these should look more and more like parks, at least in Munich.

I knew this mall as only Centro Oberhausen! So it’s called Westfield now, didn’t know that and it changed a little bit. I like shopping here, but it’s been a while. Only a little hour drive for me. Does it still have the legoland, themepark and seaworld outside the mall???? I’m an apple fan😘

Europe has a much wider range of zoning districts at hand. US as far as I know has commercial, industrial, high density living and suburban living. and this helps with the cities immensly In addition to that, Europe has mixed commercial and living, and also medium density living. mixed commercial can be shops at the first floor and apartments on top like in some blocks in the us grandfathered to current day. and medium density usually are non standalone single homes. sometimes 10 or more houses stand hugging each other on a street with maybe some space at the front and back to be used as garden or for parking. this then helps the cities to provide the means for this typical european feeling. Cities usually have a high density core, often times mixed, and the density drops going outwards. some high density industrial zones and high density commercial zones are usually in the out skirts. The money needed to provide for high density zones is much lower then the income generated. And this additional money is used to provide for the low density zones which are quite expensive to maintain in the out skirts. And they are not to far away because medium density which is roughly a zero sum game. And this results in everything being connect in a city.

I fear that a lot of inner cities in Germany are slowly dying, and Corona in addition did a number on them, too. Thankfully some cities do a pretty good job ensuring that they don't die out, by having a number of events which draw people back into the city.

Actualy, in Holland/ the netherlands youll see a lot of empty stores. Litle retailers are gone and there is a lot more restaurants and bio food stores. So the market is changing due to internet ordening. It will take a while, but the empty spots will be filled up after some time.

It's funny to me how one would flaunt a mall. Yes these places are functional and sometimes build nicely, but then again I'd find a hundred other places I'd rather spend time with my friends. Malls allways seem superficial to me and not a place I'd relax at. Food places give you lots if choices, but it's always loud and busy, and evetything feels rushed. Maybe because there's enough other nice spaces in European cities that there's no need to go to malls and in many US cities the mall is basically the most interesting thing. As for the decline, I'm pretty sure it's already started in Europe/Germany too. You'd hear from time to time that there were some problems economically. Usually it has to do with the fact that too many malls in the inner cities have been build and compete each other. Also online business it growing and with Corona it was given a push. We yet have to see if now that people can go out again they'd rather do that, or if they keep the convenience of online shoping.

Screw malls!!! They drag customers away from the inner cities, their exits even often are facing away from shopping streets (Ludwigshafen), or you have to walk a complicated route to get from the parking lot to the exit (Kaiserslautern). They're disastrous for any private owned small shops and boutiques. Only big chains reside in malls, the rest cannot afford it. One of the better and more integrated malls is Saarpark Center in Neunkirchen/Saar.

This Westfield Centro Mall in Oberhausen has been controversial right from the start. It's located right next to the central railway station, with 99% of the people arriving there are directly heading to the mall. The inner city's commerce and pedestrial zones are actually dying. I went there in pre-Covid times - and only found trashy stores and cheap cafés in a once vivid city. Oberhausen actually looked like a ghosttown on a Saturday afternoon. So sad to watch that happen! The mall is a success, yes, but to whose expense? Nowadays, German city planners refer to this mall as a bad example and a future no-go for the development of other cities....... The MTZ (Main-Taunus-Zentrum) in Sulzbach, Hesse, on the other hand, is the best possible example of a perfect symbiosis between a city, its outskirts, and local businesses. In addition, it's the oldest outdoor shopping mall in Germany, opened up in 1964 - they wanted it to look American back then.

I went there a few times, mostly during december when the weihnachtsmarkt is around too. It's only a 50 minute drive from where I live. You were surprised to see the car dealer on the 3th floor; the parking is actually on the roof there.

NALF, another American in Germany mentioned in one of his ideas that McDonald's is way better in Germany. He made a video were he said, he made a huge mistake when he come back to the US and went to McD because he was so used to German McD. Personally I prefer BK over McD. Locally at least the McD is really gross and I find BK gross as well nowadays. I rather make burgers at home. Thing is, I do enjoy malls but if it keeps the inner city alive, they are allowed to perish.

If people don't spent their money their, or don't have the money to spent there, malls can die. The internet has also done a lot of damage to stores through out Europe, and the pandemic did not help this trend. The history of shops and "shopping" - markets, is a place to start. So with the history of how towns rose from villages etc. fortifications and walls that protected bigger cities, and the social structures and layouts in these. We grew, we expanded, and the systems grew with them.... USA had loads of open spaces, why everything could get "bigger and better" and with malls being a signifier in modern age, of civilizations and comforts and luxuries - the concepts of a mall got implemented across the globe. Big cities have big shopping centers, dedicated to trade / economy.

For now, malls aren’t on a decline in Germany. But that’s just a matter of time. Online shopping will - at some point - kill malls over here just the same. If not, things like „the human malware“ or social issues might.

There are not so many malls in the narrower sense in Germany. Mostly you will them find only in bigger cities, and a few are really run-down. Some luxury ones were built in some East Germany cities in the 1990s, but since then the hype is gone. The Oberhausen (which is in the Ruhr region, the former coal + steel region in the West) Westfield mall is also of the "luxury" strain, but it looks a bit sterile/artificial to me, like a mix of Berlin main station, the duty free section of a big airport, and a modern hospital.

I live in a western german town of about 165.000 people. Over the last 4 decades they buildt 5 Malls here. 3 are allready worn out, one is still declining now and the newest is still not my kind. To me, these are just investor-frauds agressively destroying the independent Stores. I boycott them like i boycott AMZN.

In Europe we've been consuming and watching the America's my entire life, I am 41. Of course we didn't have McDonalds here my entire life, it started in bigger cities, and then spread. But I was a child as the McD came to my city. Now we have multiple McD's or Drives in my area I could choose from. This food industry of the USA has been causing global problems, even with European guidelines etc. The large here is probably between a small and medium in the USA, and things like that. Plenty of our MCD etc. don't have free re-fills, things like that. Less salt on the fries, less ice in the cups, things like that what would make you spent more in the end on unhealthy products. But Fast-food here also has changed over the decades. Recently I was at the Burger King and it took them 12 minutes to complete the order. I've worked at MCD in my youth, that is way to long for fast food, but I noticed the same problems at MCD's as well. People are faster at consuming the products than that they are receiving them most of the times.

Westfield has a lot of malls now in Europe. They're known for making these huge complexes. The one in London was build during the Olympics and it's one of the biggest. We now have one to in the Netherlands, it's close to The Hague. (Westfield Mall of the Netherlands) They're pretty much build the same, huge shopping centre, foodcourt and recreation area. And in the Netherlands they're quite an unique shopping mall for the Netherlands because they offer free parking and free use of toilets. (Most big malls have parking costs and fees to use a toilet)

The Westfield Mall here in Leidschendam used to be an old open air shopping center build in the early 70’s and needed an overhaul. Now it is really beautiful, but extremely busy in the weekends and holidays. That roads are completely gridlocked due to visitors from all over the country. Even though there is free parking, the residential area around the mall is filled with parked cars, because the 4000 parkingspots are full. It’s crazy and annoying. On those days I avoid that area if I can.

@@anouk6644 Yeah I am stuck in traffic each weekend. But the new mall is much better. Wish they made a second one because everyone goes there. They should make more Westfield malls divided around the country so not everyone flocks to the Randstad each weekend.

@@Rotterdamned010 Aha, so you know! 😂 What normally would take me 15 minutes now turns into a 45min drive and I’m not even going thru the tunnel but along the Vliet to Voorburg. As long as they don’t build them in heavy urbanized areas like here it would be fine. Almost everybody takes the car already. On the other hand, I do like I can go there by bike.

I wouldn't use Apple products if my life depended on it. No way I'm going to sit in the walled garden to get leeched on by Apple. Android as a necessity as long as I can de Google it and suppress the telemetry. But my next one will be some type of Linux as well. I can strongly recommend using Linux, it has been my main platform since 2008. It doesn't phone home, no bloat so much faster, better security than anything commercial available and tonnes of excellent free open source software that is often better than the commercial stuff. Take an old laptop to test it on from a USB stick. See if you like it.
