Qualifying happens on the continent level, and each continent gets a certain number of places in the world cup tournament. It's up to the continental confederation to decide how to run their qualifying competition. All the qualifying countries then go to the main world cup tournament, where there is no segregation. The main tournament (called the world cup finals) consists of a group stage followed by a knockout stage.
@Orionte92 жыл бұрын

The format of the world cup is a long process to explain, and a video would probably be best, but I'll try to describe it here: The world is divided into 6 confederations, mostly based on which continent a country is in (although almost all confederations have exceptions, such as Israel play in the European confederation so they don't get killed when travelling to a game in Iran). Each confederation holds their own qualifying campaign to determine which teams of theirs qualify for the world cup. Each confederation is granted a different number of spots in the world cup based on the number of teams in the confederation and the general perceived strength of those nations; Europe has 13 spots, Africa has 5, South America and Asia have 4.5, North America has 3.5 and Oceania has 0.5 (I'll explain the 0.5 in a minute), plus one extra spot for the host team, who don't have to enter qualifying. Each qualifying format is different for each confederation. In South America, because they only have 10 countries, they play 1 large group, and every team plays the other teams twice, with the top 4 qualifying. However Europe has 55 countries, so getting each team to play all the others is logistically impossible, so Europe holds 10 qualifying groups, 5 with 5 teams and 5 with 6 teams. Each group is decided with a draw, with the top 10 countries in the fifa world rankings from Europe in pot 1, the next 10 in pot 2 etc, and then each group gets 1 team from each pot (except groups with 5 teams don't get a team from pot 6) (the process is slightly more complex to take into account other factors such as countries that fight a lot, so Russia and Ukraine can't be paired together, for example). Every country plays every other country in their group twice, and the team that finishes top in each group ultimately qualifies. The second place teams go into a playoff path (1 off knockout games) to decide the remaining 3 teams from Europe to qualify. Most confederations use a something similar (or a combination of the 2, such as Asia, who start with 8 groups to get through to the next round of qualifying and then play in 2 groups of 6 to get through to the world cup itself). Subject to approval, confederations can change the format of their qualification to deal with different factors; this is most notable for this world cup after the pandemic reduced the amount of time available to complete this qualification, so changes were necessary to reduce the number of games that needed to be played, especially in Oceania. The 0.5 places count as a playoff spot. North and South America, Asia and Oceania all have 1 playoff spot, and the teams that qualify to the playoffs will have 1 home and 1 away game against 1 other team in the playoffs, drawn at random. The 2 tie winners ultimately qualify to the world cup. This is a basic overview of qualifying. Now for the tournament itself. This is when all the qualified countries from the different confederations all get together and play each other for the first time. Teams are placed into pots. The host country and 7 best teams are in pot 1, the next 8 best teams are in pot 2 etc. Then teams are drawn into 8 groups of 4 teams containing 1 team from each pot. No country is allowed be drawn into the same pot as another country from the same confederation, with the exception of Europe, which has a limit of 2 countries in each group. Each country plays all the other countries in their group exactly once, and the 2 teams that finish top of each group go through to the round of 16. (As can be seen, the host being in pot 1 means they can't be in a group with the 7 best countries in the world, so have an easier time getting through.) From the round of 16 onwards, each country is paired against another country and plays a one off game, with the winner advancing to the next round, until we are left with an overall winner. Side note: Don't worry about how the fifa world rankings are calculated, just realise that it's a generic representation of how strong a country is. The formula was changed in 2018 because countries realised they could game the formula (as it was flawed) by not playing friendly matches in order to boost their ranking, so the 2018 world cup pots look a bit odd, since Poland, who were using this method, ended up in pot 1 but still managed to finish bottom of their group because they weren't as good as their ranking suggested (although Germany were rank number 1 and still finished bottom of their group, even though this ranking was justified after they won the previous World Cup. It's just an example of how things might look a bit off before 2018). The new ranking is a lot better so the up to date rankings are a lot more reliable to undestand general strength of countries, although I think people would agree the USA's current rank of 11th is slightly generous. This is mostly because they only get to play non North American teams competitively once every 4 years, and so their rate of winning is high. Team strength is generally a lot better for comparing to other teams in the same confederation as they play each other a lot more often. I think this will balance out over time, since we've only had 1 world cup since the rankings were introduced

The industrial revolution in Britain brought the era of railways and during the middle part of the 19th century there was a huge railway mania building all over Britain. This made Britain the 'experts' on building railways and this was exported all over the globe with the railways of Argentina built by a British workforce(mainly)who took football with them. Hi, Sarah, another interesting video. I will try to explain briefly the South Africa situation, South Africa consisted of British colonies and in 1910 the colonies were joined together to create the Union of South Africa which became a self governing dominion within the British Empire, they were responsible totally for internal policy but the UK controlled external policy. In 1926 dominions took over responsibility for external policies. After WW2 a new Goverment was elected which developed Apartheid which gave the small white population total control of the country largely at the expense of the majority black population. Most countries found that unacceptable and in 1961 South Africa left the Commonwealth and became a Republic. Their Apartheid policies led to them being ostracised by much of the world and they were virtually totally isolated from international sport from about 1970 to the fall,of Apartheid in the nineties. They have since rejoined the Commonwealth. This needs a more in depth study. I will see what I can find.

I think it's important to mention that many of the colonies that made up the dominion of South Africa were former Dutch colonies that had been conquered by Britain. The majority of whites in SA were former Dutch Boers. Culturally there were a lot more differences between SA and GB than with Canada and Australia. A particular point of contention was the treatment of black people. The British were interested in the most efficient was to exploit them, where's the Boers were more concerned about repressing them due to their creater numbers. When the British removed their controls, many of the local white populace saw it as an opportunity to crack down on the Blacks, and fear of their superior numbers was then exploited to install an authoritarian government.

It's way more complicated than that even. Only Cape Town was a Dutch colony, which was more or less given to the British Empire on the questionable authority of the prince of Orange in return for support against Napoleon. The other "Dutch colonies" were in fact independent republics founded by the Boer "Voortrekkers", the South African version of the frontier pioneers.

Qualifiers are played to enter the tournament. The teams that qualify are grouped for the first stage. I can't recall if grouping is based on how a team performed in qualifying or is a random lottery but it isn't geographical. The top two teams from each group go into the knockout phase. The winner of one group will play the runner up of the next group and so on until only two teams remain to play the final.
@marblwrexbro4582 жыл бұрын
The 32 teams are placed into 4 pots of 8 based on FIFA world ranking, apart from the host country which automatically goes into the top pot of seeds. The 8 groups are then made up of 1 team from each pot of seeds. Teams from the same confederation can’t be drawn in the same group. The exception being UEFA which have a maximum of 2 teams per group, with Europe having 13 teams qualify.

Yes Denmark's 14-2 victory over Iceland was a HUGE score by any professional soccer standards. That was way back in 1967 in a friendly (i.e. non-competitive) game between the two countries. However that has been exceeded many times. In 2002 Australia faced American Samoa in a World Cup qualifier and ran out 31-0 winners, Australia didn't actually get their first goal until 10 minutes into the game, and all 31 goals were all scored within a period of 79 minutes. That's an average of a goal every 2.5 minutes !!

This is well timed as next month is the European playoffs for the teams that came 2nd in their respective qualification groups, their are 3 sets of playoffs, in one of the sets, yet again are Italy who have to beat North Macedonia and then the winners of Portugal and Turkey. That means one of the last two euros winners will fail to qualify. In one of the other playoff sets there could very well be a Scotland vs Wales winner takes all match. As an aside The teams that won their groups (such as England) have already reached the world cup group stage.
@MYTHLAND12 жыл бұрын
So basically you have the qualifiers from each continent where a certain number of teams are allowed through to the world cup The qualifying way is different for each continent so I won't go over that but what I can say is that Europe - 13 teams qualify Africa - 5 teams qualify South America - 4 teams qualify (then 1 more has to play a playoff to get into the tournament against a team from Oceania/Australasia) Asia - 4 teams qualify (1 more plays a different playoff against a team from North America) North America - 3 teams qualify (with 1 playing in the playoff against Asia) Oceania/Australasia - 1 team has to play a playoff against the team from South America So that's 29 qualifying automatically without a playoff Then 2 more from the playoffs and the final one is the host Then the actual world cup starts 32 teams There are 8 groups picked out with 4 teams in each initially For the 4 teams there are 4 pots with 8 teams in each with each in order of Fifa ranking of the qualifying teams except that the host goes into pot 1 automatically and straight into Group A/Group 1 No 2 teams can be in the same group from 1 continent unless they are from Europe either Once the 8 groups are picked out from the pot, the group stage plays Each team plays another team in the same group once then the top 2 from each group goes through Then into the round of 16 (16 teams) 1- Winner group A VS Runner-Up group B 2- Runner-up group C VS Winner group D 3 - Winner group E VS Runner-up group F 4 -Runner-up group G VS Winner group H 5- Runner-up Group A VS Winner group B 6 - Winner group C VS Runner-up group D 7 - Runner-up group E VS Winner group F 8 - Winner group G VS Runner-up group H Onto the quarter-finals 1 - Round of 16 Winner 1 VS Round of 16 Winner 2 2 - Round of 16 Winner 3 VS Round of 16 Winner 4 3 - Round of 16 Winner 5 VS Round of 16 Winner 6 4 - Round of 16 Winner 7 VS Round of 16 Winner 8 Onto the semi-finals 1 - Winner quarter-finals 1 VS Winner quarter-finals 2 2 - Winner quarter-finals 3 VS Winner quarter-finals 4 3rd place play-off Loser semi-final 1 VS Loser semi-final 2 Final Winner semi-final 1 vs Winner semi-final 2 Hopefully that's also helped anyone who's really stuck on how the world cup works
@marblwrexbro4582 жыл бұрын
All spot-on except FIFA has a draw to decide teams from which continent play each other in the inter-continental play-offs. For the 2022 world cup, 5th in South America will play 5th in Asia (the winner of the playoff between the 3rd placed teams in the final Asian qualifying group stage) and 4th in CONCACAF (North America) will play a team from Oceania. As Oceania qualifying has been put back because of Covid, a tournament between the 8 remaning teams will take place on neutral ground in Qatar in March to decide who will go through to the inter-continental play-off.

South Africa had racial segregation and was boycotted by sports teams as a result for many years. I will not go into details as you will find plenty of videos, though I suggest you start with the Boer Wars.

So to make the World Cup format easy to explain: ROUND ONE: QUALIFICATION • There are 6 regions - (1) Asia, (2) Africa, (3) North / Central / Caribbean America, (4) South America, (5) Oceania and (6) Europe • Each region gets allocated how many teams from their region goes to the World Cup • Each region decides how they are going to determine the those teams. For EXAMPLE, Africa has 5 spots. Africa right now has 10 teams remaining, they decide to do a 1v1 play-off in March 2022. The 5 play-off winners will get Africa's 5 spots for the World Cup. Each region has their own way of determining which teams qualifies. ROUND TWO: GROUP STAGE • 32 teams are in 8 groups of 4 teams each (8 x 4 = 32). • Your team HAS to play the other 3 teams in their group, so like a round-robin format. • Once all the teams in your group finished playing 3 games, the 2 teams with the best record in each group goes to knockout stage. ROUND THREE: KNOCKOUT STAGE • The 16 teams play a single knockout game until there is 1 team left, so like as you said, March Madness. The winner wins the World Cup!

oke here goes. SO the world cup is held every 4 years and is the biggest tournament on earth. before the WC starts every continent holds qualifiers to know which teams will go to the WC. once the group draw starts ull have 8 groups of 4 teams (with the rule that no continent can have 2 teams in the same group) every team plays 3 games. so 1 game against each team in their group. after that the top 2 teams from every group go to the KO stage where 16 teams go head to head in a bracket. hope this helped

the WC in 2022 is in Qatar ( yes, you read that right!) . Normally it is held when it is summer in the northern hemisphere. Since it would be way to hot to hold it then, ( in qatar), the tournament got moved to winter 2022. ( in the northern hemisphere). First match is on 21th November.

Unfortunately this year it's being held in Qatar, a country that has Zero interest in football. FIFA should hang their heads in shame. Yes the host country always automatically qualifies, so we will be seeing a host exiting in the group stage. The previous winner used to qualify too, I have no idea why they scraped that rule.

4:01 Colonisation of South America by Spain, Portugal, France and the UK made football more entrenched in countries that had colonial rulers, Also games travel borders much more easier than language. The most successful games on Earth are mainly UK invented games. As being a colonial ruler means you bring your games with you. Chess was brought to the world from the middle east as colonial rulers took local games and introduced them to their populations when they got home.

Hey SoGal, so our CONCACAF (western hemisphere’s group) consists of: Canada, U.S.A, Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rico, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. Top 3 teams go to the FIFA tournament. As of today (Feb. 2) Canada 🇨🇦 is in first place. Yeah!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦. We haven’t made it for years(and only 1 time I think). So I am hoping and praying. Tonight we play El Salvador, US plays Honduras, Mexico plays Panama. After that I think we each have 3 games left to decide the top 3. .

I think one rule is missing: organisation. Countries where sports are well organised, with proper facilities, skilled trainers, cooperation, policies with a long term view, etc., will do better. This has not much to do with money or population size. It increases the effectiveness.

The World Cup starts in November in Qatar, the one in 2026 will be hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico. Qualifying groups and playoffs are finishing off ahead of the World Cup Finals draw in April. Fifa rankings determine seedings for the Group Stage of the Finals. The 32 qualifying countries are drawn into 8 groups of 4, one from each pot; generally 'Pot 1' the best 8 ranked teams, 'Pot 2' the next best 8, Pot 3 the next best 8, Pot 4 the lowest ranked qualifiers. The 4 teams in each group play each other once (3pts for a win, 1pt for a draw) with the group winners and runners-up proceeding to the last 16 and knock out rounds all the way to the final.

The South African angle is pretty spurious, they had their first free elections in 1994 which ended apartheid. But looking back, in 1992 they ranked only 124th in the world, but then they managed to put together a decent team/coach and by 1996 they were ranked 16th in the world. Four years isn't really enough to overcome total isolation/lack of international playing time, so it's probably attributed to a lack of a decent team/coaching/management. Ever since then they've been plagues by corruption and a lack of leadership, new talent being fostered etc, so currently they're only about 68'th in the world.

The World Cup qualifying is split up in to 6 confederations I only know the qualifying for the Europe nationals 1st in the group go to the World Cup 2nd go in to play off 8 nationals 4 other nationals who did the best in the UEFA Nations League a different competition that didn’t get 1st or 2nd in the World Cup qualify group go to the play off and 3 of the 12 will go to the World Cup after the play off to. The World Cup group stage is what happens during at the World Cup of 31 nationals who qualify and the host nation then the knockout stages where 1st and 2nd in all groups go to the knockout stage
@mucxlx2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there is a FIFA ranking how good a country is. This has an effect on how many Champions league spots you get. For example a lower nation just gets 1 or 2 while the best nations get like 3 spots. (Its an european tournament with only the best couple of teams of each country). In a world cup you have a group stage where each team plays each other and the ones with the most points advance to the knockout phase. And i believe the fifa ranking matters so there are just 1 or 2 of the super strong teams go to each group. This means that the best teams all have a chance to go to the knockout phase. Where as if you put Spain, Portugal, Argentina, England, Brazil and Germany in one group this would mean that only some of those make it to the playoffs. And this would be terrible because these teams usually also have the biggest fanbases. On the other hands if you had such a group and put in Iceland or Austria or some medium strong country these teams would have almost no chance of advancing. So this is in my eyes better for the big football nations as well as the underdogs. Beat one of the big guys once - sure, beat them multiple times - very unlikely. Sure these could be lucky with a group which consists of only underdogs but its only per chance. I think its good this way it is.

South Africa became an independent country after WW2 and many of the boers (some lived in modern day Namibia after the boer wars moved back to South Africa and took over. Which meant that 2% of the population had full rule over the country and there was increasing tension after the reforms in the US being broadcast. So it basically became a repressive dictatorship in the 1950's

SoGAL, great reaction. Y'know the one big HUGE difference between American and Other sport cultures is that of franchise teams in your leagues. in America you have a top flight where all the franchises continue to play each other year on year, despite results and performance. In the rest of the world teams are never guaranteed a spot in the top tier - they need to earn it in terms of results and performance In England we have a top tier with teams like Manchester United and Liverpool but any team, even from a small town or village has the opportunity to progress and play against them through a system of promotion and relegation between not only .tiers 1 and 2, but also all the way down to tier 10 There is a great video by an American youtuber that explains this. Really it happens, teams move up between the tiers andT HIS is the beauty of football. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKSoh3yVpdmkrZY
