In this video I react to Irish culture, customs and etiquette. I already knew that the people of Ireland were friendly, but it seems that the Irish culture actually prides it self on being polite. This was a lot of fun and gets me even more excited to explore Irish culture and hospitality in person.
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this reaction please give this video a thumbs up, share your thoughts in the comments and click the subscribe button to follow my journey to learn about my British and Irish ancestry.

Oh my GOD! Yes. A thousand byes. Some people are impossible to get away from. They say goodbye, then keep right on talking. My sister in law has been known to keep people in her hallway, with their coats on and the front door open, keys in their hands, for half an hour or more.

Last time I was in Ireland I stayed in a village which had two pubs. Both were called "Kennedys" and were owned by different generations of the same family. The locals would start the evening in the pub owned by the son and leave around 9 pm so he could have some family time. They would end the evening in the parents' pub. Closing times are "flexible" in Irish pubs.

Tipping in restaurants is usually not in fast food type establishments. In higher class restaurants, with tended tables, especially in places where you need to book a table in advance, it would be normal to tip the wait staff. In a McDonalds, or Italian chippy, or a pizza joint, it would be very rare and certainly not expected. Taxis usually expect not to make change, so you generally tip up to the next 5 Euro. That is, if the fare is 9 Euro, you’d give the driver 10 and not expect a coin back. These are exceptions though. Tipping is not a part of our culture, as a rule.

I've lived in the States and I'm married to an American wife. I would say that there is very little, if any, similarity to an American bar and a typical English, Welsh, Scottish, or Irish pub. The cultural atmosphere is totally different. In the US I would never go into a bar, instead I would drink at home. The purpose there seems to be consume alcohol and get drunk. A pub however I would go on a regular basis to meet up with friends and neighbours. Although I may have a beer, I can also get a tea or coffee or we can take the kids and have something to eat. At our "local" you can sit in a corner and read a book or work on your laptop and no members of staff will ever want to kick you out or harrass you to buy a drink, like my experience in California. It's a great place for single people, particular pensioners, to go on their own for some company because everyone talks. It's usually a homely environment and part of the local social life. There are some village pubs that are even run by the local community after they've been threatened with closure. A few village pubs in the UK may even contain the local village post office.

I know a couple of really old school pubs in Ireland would have a shop/port office and a pub connected to eachother and in some places the shop and pub are all in one, half the area behind the bar would have some basic groceries in it, like bread, butter, jam and a few other bits and pieces

I like your videos my man! I live in Midlands Ireland. A pub is a place you go to socialise with friends and have a few drinks. We don't call them bars, even though a pub and a bar are the same thing, we just call them a pub. Normally we don't say "are you coming to the pub", we say are you coming to Valentines, PVs, Kanes etc different pubs have different names and we normally refer to them by their names. Also, some pubs serve food, some don't, it's hit and miss really. Normally when a big game is on for example rugby, a lot of people go to the pub to watch it, some people will drink and some people don't. Also, when your at the pub and you want to get a drink, you say "I'm going up to the bar to order a drink". The bar is the counter serving drink within the pub.

“How are you” is pronounced differently depending on where you’re from. It’s almost never an inquiry as to your personal well-being. It’s just a friendlier form of hello. Most people respond with hiya, how are you, or similar. If you want to talk, you can go into a little more detail, with something like “I’m grand, thanks. How are you?” Never, ever “I’m good”. Your good-ness is not for you to judge.

Think of a pub more like the saloon bar in cowboy movies, beer, maybe snooker or pool, darts etc Our pubs have a public bar (generally the rougher side) and lounge bar (nicer seats, quieter atmosphere) Pubs these days also serve food/meals, they need to do this to make decent money. For sad things, offering tea is probably seen as "let me make tea, we'll sit down and talk" If queueing was an o;ympic spport, the UK would get gold every time, it was once said that people would join a queue without knowing what they're queueing for

Though pub and bar are interchangeable we generally use "Pub" for any "drinking house" - in some you can get food and bring kids, others are more like dive bars, some hold gigs and have a dance floor (but are not nightclubs) We usually use "bar" for the serving bar in the pub or also the drinking lounge/pub area of a hotel. If you're drinking at a hotel bar you'd rarely if ever say "I'm going to the pub". And when in a pub you might say "are you going up to the bar for a round". Also, everyone is different but in my experience all my friends are very huggy 😅 you're right - the drunker we are the more tactile too.

IF (?) I'm going to tip in the UK, I generally work on a 10-12% basis... 15% is really pushing it (for exceptional service). I've been to the US many times and 'hate' the tipping culture (but do it, to avoid any conflict - DUH). What I have noticed though, is that the 'expected' tip percentage has been slowly increasing to, what is now, in some parts of America a ridiculous 25% (or a quarter of the cost of a meal). I have never paid that and ONLY ever done 15-20% at the most.

Steve, what you said about your grandma sounds very much like my own Mum here in England. Many years ago she was in a dispute with my youngest brother and his wife about the raising of their five children and while I was visiting them my sister-in-law came out with the classic line about my Mum that, "....she wouldn't say sh!t even if she had a mouthful of it! ". I burst out laughing when I heard her say that and told her that she was spot-on when it came to describing my mother. That being said the next time I went to visit my brother, his wife and their children I got earache from my sister-in-law because she thought that I'd grassed her up to my Mum for her saying that when in reality one of my nephews had done it and reported back to my Mum ( his grandmother ) about what his own mother had said. While I hate to say it my late Mum was a bit of an interfering busybody when she was alive especially when it came to the raising of her grandchildren. Another example of her interference came when I went to visit my youngest sister and both she and my brother-in-law had been arguing about something and they were telling me about something that my Mum had done. I told them point-blank that I wasn't interested and that I had no intention of getting involved in any of their disputes. I also used the typical line of, " You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose but you can't pick your f*cking family, can you? "....my brother-in-law started laughing when I said that and after he'd recovered agreed with me.

She is pretty spot on for most things... Saying goodbye, especially when leaving a social event, is more of a process in Ireland than a mere exit. Often, multiple people to say bye to, have to have a chat if haven't spoken to everyone before you leave, slowly move to the door. Elbows on the table are not a major issue, the norm at the end of a meal or just having a drink. In the workplace, punctuality is observed, same for things like concerts and theatre. Meeting at pub would be more relaxed. Pubs are better viewed as meeting places with alcohol available. The tea and the "go on" culture is beautifully demonstrated by Mrs Doyle in the classic sitcom 'Father Ted' - it really is a thing. This lady is from the east coast of Ireland - Galway, the main city in the west of the country, has been named on a number of surveys as the friendliest city in the world, so when you visit Ireland, make sure to make time for a trip. Close friends of both sexes will hug each other, and are more tactile. One thing she didn't mention was how friendships are not limited to one's own sex or age group, and not defined by the job you do. The commonest question meeting a new person is "where are you from?" Irish people love making connections - we might know someone from the same part of Ireland (hence we ask that of each other). If someone is obviously a new arrival in the country, it is out of genuine interest - the Irish travel a lot, many have lived abroad (note the presence of Irish pubs across the world). Hope you get to visit us soon!

Generally speaking irish people are amongst the most lovely you'll ever meet. They can be rough around the edges, a little bit fey, don't always strictly tell the truth and have a whole history of things mystical. They aren't afraid to speak their minds. My overall impression in Ireland is that most people have more time for you. Taking my black immigrant husband to a remote part of Kerry in the very south of Ireland, I was a little bit hesitant, wondering what his reception would be. Well, this was it. No less than five separate strangers approached him, shook his hand and welcomed him to Ireland. I'm irish as well as English, but I haven't ever lived in Ireland as my Irish dad settled in England and lived and died there. But whenever i visit now, I firmly feel I'm at home. Pubs in Ireland can be amazing. They are pretty good in England, but Iriah ones mostly surpass them.

The queue thing is different in the north. If someone bunked the queue, we sarcastically say to the person "You alright there??". Also you can say "here, do you think im just standing here for the good of my health?" Works most of the time and they say sorry and move. But if you get flipped off by the said person for challenging them about bunking the queue, thats fair game to publicly shame them for bunking and not moving, so you simply remark about them "being ignorant and having a brass f***ing neck for bunking the queue!!" 😂

Slagging is great craic. Highly recommend. Tea and a chat is defo centrepoint of our culture. Sign of someone offering u support. Not having elbows on table is timing out. See elbows on tables far more now in restaurants etc and much prefer it. Comfortable! We're more tactile than she communicates imo. We always hug our friends hello and goodbye. And I'm a non-drinker. Irish do swear a lot. But also we use the word "feck" - which is a great substitute for the *other f-word, and u can v safely say feck in front of ur granny. We do say 100s of Byes - leading to "the Irish goodbye," where u don't say bye to anyone and u just leave - cause all the byes take too long. 😊 I'm in Dublin and everyday see ppl waving to each other - one of my fave parts of driving around. 😊 Great social etiquette tips all round. The most popular teas in Ireland are blends of strong Indian Black Tea. It is much stronger than the tea drank on the mainland. After it is fully drawn it is closer to black coffee in strength than a green tea. The first refusal is not about being polite by not accepting what is offered it is about giving host the opportunity to show the extent of their hospitality and generosity.

This all sounds very much like Scotland too. I'd say that not all pubs (in Scotland and the UK) are created equal - some pubs are lovely, family friendly and serve food. Others are far more like bars. I'm not a fan of bars, but I will go into pubs. Another difference between pubs and bars is that a pub is generally (but not always) a standalone building or bought premises, they might even have some bed and breakfast rooms on-site, and also a beer garden. Bars, tend to be smaller businesses within rented premises, if they do have a beer garden it'll probably be very small (and usually just used by smokers!). Our greetings are a bit different in Scotland though. The only place I've ever seen any real issues with queuing was in rural Germany when I tried to get on a bus. There was all these locals, mostly old ladies. They stood and talked politely to each other... then the bus came and it was absolute free-for-all, complete with pushing and shoving. Then they all got on the almost empty bus (so there was no reason to fight for seats...) and went back to talking politely to each other...it was so surreal!

I haven't read the previous comments, so this may be repetitive to you. A "bar" in the US is roughly the same as a "pub" in Ireland, although a pub may well be divided into a "bar" in which people mainly sit literally at the bar, like in the USA, or maybe on a few other stools; a 'lounge" which generally is a larger area with various seating arrangements. Some also have a "snug" which is an area siting usually 8 people or less which is likely to have its own serving area.

All of these things are true in Ireland. I live in U.K. with joint U.K. /Irish nationality and have spent a lot of time in Ireland over the years. Irish and British pubs are remarkably similar in the way they function but can physically look different. Irish internal decor can have dark colours and a lot of wood. External walls can have bright pastel colours, green, yellow, blue. Although some pubs in both countries can be more like bars the great things about most Pubs is that they are a community centre. Go into a typical pub lunchtime particularly in rural area and on one table there may be a few friends drinking, another table with two men having an informal business meeting over a drink and a sandwich, another table may a some mums with kids in buggies meeting,(particular in the pub gardens which a high percentage of pubs do outside of cities and large towns), another table may have staff from a local office having lunch, another table where a young lad (under 21!) has taken his granddad for a pint. All this could be happening at the same time. In the evening the atmosphere changes, obviously no kids and more people out socialising with friends for the evening as she said. “Go on, go on” is definitely true. See if you can watch some videos of Father Ted, a comedy about an Irish priest from a few years go. His housekeeper, Mrs Doyle, had “go on” down to an art form.

Children are not allowed in pubs after 9 pm don't know if there is a similar law in the UK or not.British pubs tend to be wee bit bigger and usually don't have family names because they are linked to breweries whereas in ireland they are usually stand alone businesses.

@@gallowglass2630 it is 9:00 in the U.K. as well, although 9:30 if eating with their family. My uncle had a pub named “Ryan’s “ in Cork when I was a child, this was going back almost 50 years ago and there wasn’t a curfew then. Loved his pub, he had a petrol pump outside and my Aunt ran a small store attached to the pub. Local farmers would come and park by the pump, my cousin filled the tank while the driver went into the pub, gave a shopping list to my aunt who did his shopping while he sat and had a pint. Must be the ultimate convenience shopping.

My local village pub is a shop in the front too... agricultural supplies out back ..and is also the village undertaker's.. side sheds converted into a small chapel where the coffin is open for the villagers to pay their last respects before the coffin is closed with just the family present. Everyone else waits outside then to accompany the coffin across the road to the church.

That 10 to 15% tip is not the case I'm Irish just to point out that you won't find any add ons on Ur bill, Ur bill it's itemized just what U have consumed, the tip is totally up to U and usually a person might leave 2 or 3 euro or up to 5 euro but that's considered a great tip, but here we tip on a great service if we don't get it we don't tip plain and simple, I was in the stated we went to a breakfast in a cafe slash dinner we waited almost an hour to get or orders taken an another 45 mins for the food waitress was rude to us so upon leaving my cousin said U didn't leave a top we said no we waited over and hour to have orders taken 45 mins for food rude service so no why would we tip we didn't we wouldn't that's or way and was not tipping for that no way, and tea cures everything here 😂

Irish pub culture is V different to English pub culture.. Hard to explain... Easier to show. And even then there is no 1 "this is how they are" for either country. Irish pub culture is traditionally much more drinking chat&craic or music focused and later opening hours. A pub is any public house, you then have a Bar consisting of the Bar and stools + tables around the wall(old days men only), The lounge tends to be much larger with space for familys / parties.. maybe a "snug" or 2.. Traditional pubs are falling by the way-side for the most part though. There are still plenty round but there used to be many many more Old "joke" is the typical Irish village has a shop, post office and petrol station (usually 1 place) and 3 pubs.. She is a V modern take on Irish.. no massive connection to the past there and thats for sure. Dublin in the early 90's and back was a V different place to what it is now.. True of the whole country to be fair, Though the countryside always seems to remember longer than the cities(apart from the odd lil nooks that survive) She explains the Bye thing pretty well, it's not trying to be rude but to end the convo and get on with whatever they need to.. But.. It's Very much a Dublin (and surrounding areas) thing The striking up conversation when your already done and about to leave is V often true. I don't think she actually covered Irish culture or customs at all (I'll give her the first refusal / constant offerings).. Just some etiquette that is generally true in western societies beyone the odd Irishism. Watch ANY "Fr TED" episode (well nearly) and Mrs Doyle gives you the stereotypical Irish older lady when guests come... Drink, food, heat, seat, towel, You'll be offered everything you could possibly need repeatedly till ya give in and take something.. (At least thats how it feels sometimes)

Personally. If someone asks me if I want something, and I say "No". That's what I mean. If I offer something and they so "No", I'll say "Are you sure?" "Irish people aren't really into public displays of affection" Well this irish person is. ☺ Yes, I have one particular friend, I always hug whenever I see her, and it's often in a street. Not sure if ever witnessed bye before they actually leave. But I do recall on more than one occassion, someone saying something like "Oh, i better go, and 20 minutes later, they still haven't gone. It's usually a certain sex by the way.☺ She left holding doors open, putting dividers down in supermarket checkouts for the person behind you. Well, where I live, this would be in Aldi and Lidl. Then also in the same stores, if you have lets say a reasonable of groceries, and the person behind has only a few items, to let them on ahead of you. Of course, not everybody does it.

Running late-----Irish people work hard, so usually might stay over to finish up what they are doing. They may have home responsibilities to take care of after, so running late for the pub isn't a big worry. Contrary to popular belief, other things take presedent. We don't spend all our time in the pub but when we do go out we know how to have a jolly good time.

Tipping is a strange one. We do it for waiters but not so much others. Dont know why they get singled out above others though. As far as I'm aware, they are paid a regular wage. Otherwise u might tip dustman etc but generally nearer Xmas. I don't understand why queuing stands out to visitors. Bill Bryson mentions it a few times but that just evokes images of Americans barging through each other like bargain hunter at a Boxing Day sale!

one of the first thing you taught to your children in france is to not accept money from a stranger , anything in fact and always refuse from a non stranger even a familly member you dont see often if there is not a good reason for it , because there is no reason to do so , and to not be indebt for this nice gesture in fact it could be perceved as i offer you smthg so now you have to ... and its not smght youll like to be forced to in france ^^ the polite refusal the why ? and the acceptance if you want to Most girl refuse gift to not :" have to be nice " or feel the obligation to offer smght like "sexual favor" or simply false interest ( exageration but i think you understand why they say no if the guy as no chances ) in return . in many american short we see a guy giving money for actions , its very bad for a french its not like you reward an action but more : you pay for obedience type of thing , its ok for the young rarely for the oldest ( and no matter the cost even millions ). we prefer be offended than money ^^
