If you watch his face closely, every time he pushes the boundaries his eyes are everywhere over the audience. He reads their reactions and adjusts his jokes accordingly. Bob Monkhouse was the same, his eyes used to dart around checking the audience every joke. Absolute masters of comedy.

I met Jimmy Carr after a show once in an autograph signing queue. Unfortunately there was some bloke with his Mrs holding everybody up, seriously they were there for ages and you could sense that the people behind them were getting annoyed, but Jimmy was smiling and being pleasant. Anyway, being nosey like I am, when I got to the front of the queue I couldn't resist asking him what the hold up was about. He said that the bloke was looking really smug and his Mrs mentioned that he'd just passed his PhD viva, and went on to bore him to death talking about Toxicology. Jimmy said he put up with it because his wife was so gorgeous to look at. The best bit though was when he handed his autographed book back to the bloke, as while he was admiring it Jimmy managed to write his phone number on the wife's copy to which she gave Jimmy a cheeky wink! A really nice guy.

I was Jimmy Carrs waiter years ago when he was doing Birmingham NIA. He would come in for lunch. We were a very nice restaurant so we'd get a lot of celebrities in. Jimmy was one of the top 3 nicest. A genuinely nice, warm, modest guy. My other top 2 were Derren Brown and Stephen Fry. We were used to having celebrities in, but when Stephen Fry walked in a hush fell over the place, including the staff. There was just a presence about him. I think he found it a bit embarrassing. But I got the honor of serving his table and he's was great. What's funny is that I never remembered how much the nice celebs tipped. It was always the bad ones that I remember the tips.

his humour is ‘left turn humour’. You’re going down the road to the destinations Jimmy Carr sets up and suddenly you take a left turn and you laugh because you didn’t see it coming (although you probably should have). It’s the unexpected. And half of it is funny because you KNOW it’s going to be crass, but you don’t know how he’s going to sell it. He’s absolutely brilliant.

After about 200 hours of watching Jimmy Carr footage, I finally realized that the reason why he can get away with it is he says things that take the edge off a little if the reaction to the punchline suggests that the audience was not taking it well

He is literally one of the funiest people alive. To top it off he is highly intelligent. He does his jokes as pure shock value, He doesn't trueley believe in what hes saying, if he did it wouldn't be funny. he is also extremely quick witted. If you see any of his live shows where he deals with hecklers, he deals with them on the fly and its a different joke every time.
@stevecox50123 жыл бұрын
As some others have almost certainly said, he makes a point of saying that they are just jokes and that is all. It is escapism and when you are at a comedy gig, it is like you have carte blanche to laugh at anyone and everyone being ripped to shreds. I have seen him live loads of times and he always tests the audience to see where the limit is. No show is the same though, not even on the same tour, which is why he is one of my favourite stand-ups. He and Dara O'Briarn who is imo, the best at ad-lib at his gigs, especially when he interacts with the audience. Genius!

Part of what Jimmy Carr does is what is called "Paraprosdokians" - where the final part of the sentence/joke changes how you interpret what came before. It's an interesting way to do shock humour as it's not making light of the subject matter, it's all about the gap with the audience expectations. I don't know if you could find a good Emo Phillips video, but that was very much his style and some of his material was similarly dark "My schoolmates would make love to anything that moved, but I never saw any reason to limit myself." I'll be honest, I prefer the likes of Ed Byrne and Dara O'Brien to Jimmy Carr, but I don't think their material does so well when edited down, a lot of Carr's stuff works as isolated clips

There was a screen up scrolling through some one liners in his style, and the last one before he was introduced onto stage was, “What’s worse than finding a worm in your apple?”, followed by, “Being raped.” I was ready to miss some great comedy, and for a few seconds I was reaching for the remote, and bless her, after the initial shock, she burst out laughing. Very “close to the mark” comedy sometimes, and that’s Me saying with absolutely no taboos in humour….
