The Official Languages Act came into effect in 1969-within the first year of Trudeau, Sr's election to PM. It was unethical for a country to disregard, alienate, and exclude the huge percentage of Francophones (and those who established Canada). Therefore, Canada's two official languages became English AND French; all party leaders are expected to have a good understanding of and conversational skills in both languages.

This has happened many times in Canada. We do not elect a Prime Minister, we elect a party, and the party leader would become Prime Minister. The Liberal party will hold a convention and members of the Liberal party will elect a new leader, who will be the new PM. This should be done by late February or early March. Then Parliament will return to work at the end of March. We currently have a minority government, which means that the Liberals need to work with other parties in order to legislate. Any party can ask for a vote of non-confidence and if the majority of the house agrees, then Parliament closes and an election is called. The election date can not be any sooner than 37 days or longer than 50 days. A far cry from our wonderful neighbours in the south, where it always seems are in election mode. Love your comments.

Parliament in Canada is conducted in both English and French, and most politicians are expected to speak both languages (though a few of them aren't all that fluent). The Prime Minister is leader of his party, and elected directly by the voters in his district (ridings or seats). The party that forms the government is the one that wins the most seats. If they win a majority of the seats, they form a "majority government" but if they win only a plurality, they form a "minority government" and must govern by forming a coalition with some other party. A PM who alienates enough of the members in his own party may be forced to resign, and that party will have a leadership contest. At any time, a government in power may be subject to a "non--confidence" motion in Parliament, and forced to call an election.
@noseboop435416 күн бұрын
No, most politicians aren't expected to speak both languages. Only a small minority are (Prime Minister, Governor General, etc). The vast majority are unilingual English or unilingual French, the billingual ones are usually from Montreal where until very recently there was one street that divided the city in two, and everybody was unilingual English in the west side and unilingual French on the east side.
@philpaine306816 күн бұрын
@@noseboop4354 I may be out of touch. Many years ago, when I routinely witnessed Parliament, every MP made at least some token effort to speak a bit in the other language (sometimes the results were embarrassing). Most MPs were reasonably well educated, with a sprinkling of car-dealers and small-town potentates who were not --- and that usually included some language-learning. The political parties made it clear that you couldn't get anything like a cabinet post unless you took lessons and at least made some effort. Certainly every francophone member could get by reasonably well in English, and many anglophones weren't too bad in French. If things have changed to how you describe it, I am disappointed. It doesn't bode well.
@philpaine306816 күн бұрын
@@noseboop4354 I just made some quick enquiries and got the following: "Every MP in the Bloc can speak at minimum a basic level of English, if not a more advanced level. They may not know certain technical words but they're pretty proficient." "Most Quebec MPs are fluent in English as a second language, but there are likely some who struggle a bit. In all events, it's a much less common phenomenon than MPs and ministers who can't speak French." That sounds much more like the situation I remember among francophones. I grew up in a 50/50 zone in Ontario, so that may have coloured my experience, as I've encountered numerous anglophone politicos making an effort.
@philpaine306816 күн бұрын
@@noseboop4354 Out of further curiosity, I dredged up a 2004 report on federal candidates which counted functional bilingual status by party affiliation, The highest score was the Bloc at 86%, followed by NDP 43%, Green 40%, Liberal 36% and Conservatives at 34%. So not too bad 20 years ago. Now? I need to find comparable data to know how much it has changed.
@noseboop435416 күн бұрын
@@philpaine3068 Those reports way way overestimate the English ability of Bloc MPs. Being able to speak Dora the Explorer level of English shouldn't count as 'billingual'. Blanchet has to make the reporters repeat the question a minimum of 3 times when asked in English, you really think 80% of the Bloc do better? As for the ones trying to speak a few words of French, their efforts are appreciated but is nowhere near "every politician is expected to speak both languages" that you so boldly claimed.

Trudeau wants one of his globalist loving liberal caucus to be elected as leader of the liberal party in the hopes that they can win the next election(with the help of mainstream media propaganda payoffs to persuade the voters), They can then make a coalition with the Block or NDP , and take over to finish the carnage perpetrated on Canada. Mark Carney does not have the stain of Trudeau on him....is not well known, but has had high financial positions and is not known by many that he is a globalist collaborator and a hypocritical wheeler dealer ready to put the last financial nails in Canada's coffin, while he profits from it. Let's not forget Mackenzie King who lost seats in the 1925 general election but still held office briefly as PM until the Liberals lost a no-confidence vote in 1926. Then King asked the then-Governor General, Lord Byng of Vimy, to call a new election. Byng refused and instead asked the Conservatives under Arthur Meighen to form a government. King resigned as PM and Meighen became PM for exactly 4 Parliamentary votes. Then Meighen's Conservatives lost a 5th vote and Meighen asked Byng to dissolve Parliament and call another election. This time Byng said "Yes". King's Liberals won a majority and remained in power throughout the Great Depression and WW2. Resignations are common in Canadian politics, like what King and Meighen both did a few months apart during the "King/Byng Affair". Other times, a PM can remain in power for a very long time, like King later did, remaining in power for some 22 years.

9:42 Remember when I promised you a breakdown of the Throne Speech? To understand a minority government, we have to go back to the first order of business post election. Officially titled "The Speech from the Throne", it sets the form of government until the next election. It can go a number of ways, but the most likely are: 1) A majority - Just as it sounds, one party has enough seats to pass the speech into official policy. 2) A minority - This is when no one party has enough seats alone to secure government but can pass their speech through some policy concessions to gain the support of another party(ies). The party with the most seats gets first kick-at-the-cat. If they fail to pass their speech, the party with the second most seats gets to try. This leads us into the third most likely outcome. 3) Failure to Launch - No party can secure enough votes for their speech, Parliament is dissolved and we go straight back to the polls. There's a joke in Canada that says "Governments in Canada last two months or ten years." Next up, party leadership races...

LPC is polling at under 20% while CPC is polling at over 45%. CPC is set to win around 236 seats to the LPC's paltry 35. Highly unlikely they're coming back from this.

It's not required but it has been tradition since forever. There have been a handful of times when MPs refused or were unable to speak in one of the official languages.

@@robertsmith4681 " since forever" - since Pierre Trudeau ; the back and forth switching was not very common before him.

And it's perfectly okay to skip ahead to whichever language you prefer - I'm pretty sure most of us do the same (except when we want to strengthen our listening skill in our non-dominant language) Also, we recently had an Inuit minister address parliament in Inuktitut! Have you ever been to Canada Tyler? If not you should totally take a trip here sometime. Not just to like Windsor or Niagra Falls or Toronto something though, like to Jasper, Banff, anywhere in BC, or any number of our scenic places. You seem like a very kind and polite Anerican who would get along well here.

Yes, many Liberal Members of Parliament have been calling for him to step down over the last few weeks and months.

Perhaps the Liberals will finally adopt a mechanism to eject an unwanted party leader.
