Doddy was such a well loved comedian, he would often start his live shows by shouting “Lock the doors!” and you knew you were on for a really hilarious time. His famous jokes always started with ‘What a beautiful day’. “What a beautiful day! What a beautiful day for sticking a cucumber through someone’s letter box and shouting: ‘Help, help, the Martians have landed.’” And he always ended on a song, ‘Happiness’ so, so missed. Love the channel and much respect.

Born in Knotty Ash and remained in Knotty Ash all his life in the same house. A true comedic genius and not a swear word or dirty joke in sight. I once met him at The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital and being a portly chap his opening line was, “Are you on the run from WeightWatchers”? Took the time to have his photo with the wife and I and was so generous with his time. A man true to his roots and so gracious. There will never be a comedian like him. Legend

This comics claim to fame was that he played every theatre in Britain, and the shows would sometimes go on over three hours or more, there are several jokes about this fact. He became such a comedy icon that they put a statue up to him in Lime Street Train station in Liverpool when he was still alive.

Great old school comedian from Liverpool in my childhood that taxi drivers loved as his live shows went on longer for hours past the last bus, train that the audience had to get taxi back home : ) was renowned for staying on stage telling jokes for hours

If there was ever a "Degree" to be obtained in humour, Sir Ken would have been heading the list and teaching the subject in university! An extraordinary mental retention of material and a love of comedy and his audiences served him well in a long much admired career.

Many years ago he gave a talk on humour at Lyme Hall, Stockport, followed by a very informal gathering with those who attended. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend and got a signed photograph from him. I don't know of any great star who would be as informal and friendly as he was.

I worked in the box office of a theatre. Ken would be booked for two shows in one night, each year. Tickets sold as soon as they became available. First show was 6.00 until 8pm. At 8.30 the second show was due to begin but Ken was still performing. When he finally left the stage the audience had to leave via the fire exits as the foyer was packed with people waiting patiently for their turn to see this great comedian. One night the second show was still going at 1am when the manager almost dragged Ken off the stage. He continued his poerformance for the final dozen survivors in his dressing room. Rumour has it they were still there at 4am.

Ha haaaa. I've not heard that one from Ken before. You can't go wrong with Ken he is brilliant. He usually started his piece with audience interaction - build a rapport before launching into a stream of great stuff. He didn't swear or do blue, but he did drop hints. And he was relentless. Never stopped. Please find some more!

Even though Liverpool has produce many great comics ove the years - humour to Liverpudlians is what singing is like to the Welsh,- Ken was their hero. I'd been a fan of Ken Dodd for many years, and finally got to see him on stage, fortunately in a theatre not far from home as it was well past midnight when the show was over. Although I haven't seen many comics on stage, I was also lucky to get the chance to see Jerry Lewis live. Forget the funny noises and slapstick, as a stand-up comedian he was also one of the greats.

Bob Monkhouse was another old-school UK comic, who's been largely forgotten by the 21stC 'forward-thinkers'! He was THE font of all comedy knowledge, in the UK, & kept a record of every joke he'd ever written, or told, in huge joke-books, some of which went missing once (stolen, I believe) The press made such a big deal of his misfortune, as he was held in such high regard by everyone, they were returned pretty soon afterwards!

Ken is probably the best known Liverpool comedian, however the city is full of them. My wife has quite a wit but her father was a master, he could not have a conversation without dropping a joke. Both ex army which in itself is a school for humour, John for decades delivered bakery goods to shops in the city, so picked up so many funny stories, true & otherwise.
