I saw my old dad today and told him about this interesting new cross-cultural phenomenon of Americans "reacting" (he probed me about that term for some time) to British comedy of every kind. "So what?" says he. Responded I, "Ah, but you haven't heard the kicker. 90% of their subs..." "Their what?" "Er, their "regular audience", are British!" "Oh. I see. So these American "reactors" have discovered a new product with a steady market (which is you). How interesting." "Hmm, well, if you put it that way, then yes, I suppose that's what it is to some extent. But it's also culturally significant. Why would Brits be watching Americans "react" to old comedy sketches from Britain?" "Vanity." "What?" "Pure vanity." "Why?" "It just is. Anyway, do you have a favourite "reactor"?" "I do." "Really. How delightful. Does this person have a name?" "He's called "Squirrel" "Squirrel? As in the tree rodent. Is he a grey squirrel?" "He's from New England." "Of course he is." "Why do you say that?" "Well, it stands to reason, doesn't it? New England - Old England. He's pining." And so it went on. We did have some fun re-enacting some hitherto long-forgotten Two Ronnies sketches though. Oh, and he told me to mention Tommy Cooper. "If he doesn't like Tommy Cooper's bottles sketch, then tell this "Squirrel" that he's not as switched-on as you say he is." And then there was something about nuts. All true.

Squirrel it is a joy to watch Four Ronnies Friday with you as it brings back Saturday nights in the 70's and true family viewing where everyone got something from The Two Ronnies humour. Back then I watched them as a child now I am appreciating them again as an adult. In this sketch you can imagine them touring in a van from state to state and can see as you say those 'buy now' pay over 104 weeks compilation album adverts on the TV of best selling singers you've never heard of or your great grandma would have liked! (Think K-Tel or something like that comes to mind). Oh and singing was very much part of their act.

OMG. Tremendous. My dad used to have the Jehoshaphat & Jones EP and I hadn't heard it for 35yrs. Ronnie Barker was the brains of the writing. Being a shy and humble type, he used to write a huge amount of their material and submitted it all via his alter ego Gerald Wiley. Corbett wasn't anywhere near as talented as a writer but as a comedian, his portfolio of quality performances was impressive, even if it wasn't in Barker's league.

If you’ve never seen it before, you might enjoy a film called ‘Burke and Hare’. It’s a comedy that is loosely based on the true story of a couple of Irish men living in Edinburgh who take up grave robbing and murder to earn some money. The reason I suggest it, is because Ronnie Corbett is part of the cast with Andy Serkis and Simon Pegg in the titular roles.

The Two Ronnie's never were a double act. Ronnie B started in Radio, then TV as an actor and then really found his genius when he started to submit sketches to the Two Ronnie's producer under the pseudonym of Gerald Wiley as he wanted the sketches to be not connected to him and judged on their own merits. Ronnie C on the other hand was a stand up comedian who went in to acting. Incidentally Ronnie B almost certainly wrote the lyrics for the 3 songs. They did one one series every year for 16 years. In between they did their own thing. Ronnie B did Porridge, Open All Hours and Going straight. While Ronnie C did 'Sorry' for 8 series. All very funny. So if you like these guys and we as Brits 'love em' then you've probably got enough material for at least a couple of years. Oh and yes there was a porridge film as well.

Thanks - I had forgotten how great the Two Ronnies were. They were famous when I was young - they are so talented. British are known to be reserved but there is an element of incredibly vulgar innuendo which is how we express our repressed selves. Then there is the incredibly black humour (dead parrot sketch of Monty Python is an example) and the irony. Yes Ronnie Barker is my favourite. Have you seen Open All Hours. They both have interesting paths. Ronnie Corbett went into acting very early on in his career, stage trained from 1951 after coming out of the RAF as a commissioned officer, managed to get a few movie credits under his belt as well as a ton of television by the end of the '50s. Notably he had big TV success in the first incarnation of Crackerjack! in 1957-58. It seems to be forgotten now but Ronnie C also had a big hit with the sitcom Sorry! in the 1980s which ran for 42 episodes and managed second career as a game show host in the 90s.

Ronnie B always made sure that Ronnie C had good parts and wrote to his abilities. I still watch Ronnie B in open all hours and porridge both brilliant shows and worth a watch. Ronnie Barker was an absolute genius in everything he did. Check out Porridge his performance in this Prison set comedy series Is superb.RC was good his own right but Barker was THE man ,very sadly missed........As a side note he was also shy and self deprecating Whilst they were writing the Two Rs they received scripts in the post written by a guy called Gerald Wiley. The scripts were very good so they contacted Mr.Wiley and invited him to a meeting with the whole team in an Indian restaurant as it happens. So the appointed time came and went and Mr Wiley was a no show.As the crew were about to leave Ronnie B stood up and said he was actually Mr.Wiley. The reason he did this was because he didn't know if his scripts were good enough and didn't want the team to use them just because they knew RB had wrote them and not on their merit. For me that shows you the mark of the man.

Ronnie Barker is most people's favourite. He wrote some of their sketches under an alias, as he didn't want the producers to include sketches, just because he wrote them. He was a very modest man & generous to his co-performers, allowing them to shine. Ronnie Corbett was a versatile comedy actor with excellent timing, he could make a mediocre script funny. One thing that shows in their work, was their genuine respect & affection for each other.

I once bought an Album of Big Jim Jehosophat and Fat-Belly Jones whilst on holiday. I brought the LP back in my suitcase protected by towels!

Ronnie Barker has done more than Ronnie C. Ronnie B did a comedy program called Porridge, whee he played the role of Norman Stanly Fletcher, a nan doing a 5 year stretch in prison. That would be a good one to check out.

It's about time you're doing some of their musical numbers 👍👍 (This isn't one of their better ones though)

It's not bad at all - though it's not Plumstead Ladies Male Voice Choir, Aldershot Brass Ensemble, St. Botolph Country Dance Team or The Rochdale Ringers.

You should check out some of Ronnie C's iconic monologues, to balance out any sketches with only Ronnie B.

Ronnie Barker used to write most of the material under a pseudonym, they are both legends.

The thing about these two Ronnies is they both started as actors in films in the 1950s Met each other in a news series that had famous people in it in 1960s called that was the week that was later called the Frost Report. Here is a link to the famous sketch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nmmmnqWBhrtpnNU Sorry not the full version.

The could not play an instrument (apart from the kitchenialia sketch ones!), but were good singers. For an audio of Barker , check some of his roles in the Light Programme show The Navy Lark, a few lines compared to other actors (Leslie Philips, Jon Pertwee) but timing and delivery absolutely key.

I grew up watching the Two Ronnie's, glad you like them too. Two musical numbers of theirs you will surely like are McCleary's Gold, and Cliff Clive and the Jivers playing big band numbers.

I would doubt that many Americans have your knowledge of the Two Ronnies because of the vast amount of entertainment offered to Americans as perhaps also to the young generation of Brits to a degree, unless their older parents introduce them.

Four Ronnie's Friday is now a go to fix🐿️if you continue this it will take at least another five years of your life😂 so many sketches buddy and we love your reaction to these absolute legends. Watching the shows in the 70s you never knew what was coming next, so diverse in material. For me for what it's worth both were brilliant regards timing big Ron was well known for his use of the English language but little Ron's facial expressions were hilarious a magnificent double act! Thanks for sharing it with us and take care 🐿️✌️🇬🇧✌️🇺🇸🍻
