Island Girlz we the folkof the UK raraly show our patriotism but in early September each year we let our hair down and celebrate the last night of the Proms. Do not think that the people of theUK are not patriotic. We are British - there is no one like us.

We don't stick our flag on every building and dumpster but people should never doubt the embedded patriotism of the British people. People have misjudged us and regretted it.This night is an occasion when we can just be British. But we share the good vibes with anyone who wants to be with us. Look at all the different flags.

In some countries you have to search to find their national flag on any building. (Took me 3 days to see one in Tokyo). That's what pisses me off about the USA...stars and stripes on garbage collectors jackets, on suit lapels, even in sports gyms covering the whole wall. I don't know where this is coming from...is it to remind theme where they live? We'd laugh about it here.

I think Polish people are even more patriotic, regarding how many times they had to fight for their, and for Britain's existence. Some of it is told in Sabatons songs, like 40 to 1, Uprising, Winged Hussars, Prisoner 4589 and Aces in exile. Watch the live video of 40:1 from Woodstock 2012 and you get what I mean.

The pride is there... we don't tend to make a big deal about it - bad taste, y'know. We are proud of our history and our accomplishments (despite the current tendency to lose context of the times and re-write history to try and force us to feel ashamed of it). Maybe when my generation has passed, the new revised version of history will prevail. Until then... nope.

There is no nation on the planet that's aloof from mistakes and that includes us Brits. We tend to play emotions down but The Last Night of the Proms provides a nostalgic moment for us to let it rip! If hearing this sung at the Last Night at the Proms does stir your Emotions, your not a true Brit. Some Countries mock us & ridicule us but as the old saying goes, the sun never sets on the British Empire, because in bygone days we ruled most of the free world. We educated them gave them laws to rule themselves then set them free to rule themselves. Most of the criticism is jealousy, you may mock us but don’t ever make the mistake of underestimating the British people. British and proud of it. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧.

As you doubtless know, this is the first of a series of marches composed by Sir Edward Elgar entitled "Pomp and Circumstances. The first time it was performed there probably would not have been any vocals. However as a march it was so thoroughly premiered and was so well received that the orchestra had to perform it again immediately. (encore). I believe the words came later, correct me if am wrong. Incidentally the other four marches are amazing and very worth listening to.
@Langstrath
@Langstrath 8 ай бұрын
You are correct; there were no vocals in the original. This Pomp and Circumstance March No.1 was composed by Sir Edward Elgar and first performed in October 1901 in Liverpool, UK (along with March No.2) and then 2 days later at a Proms concert in London where a double encore was played due to popular demand. The lyrics 'Land of Hope and Glory' were written later (in 1902) by A.C. Benson at Elgar's request for the Trio section of the March. Elgar then incorporated the revised version into his 'Coronation Ode' which he composed for the coronation of Edward VII.
