Scot here. Big cities are big cities - Glasgow and Edinburgh are great, but you got to get to the west coast. Go to Oban and take some boat tours. Be prepared for bad weather, if it turns out nice you can take your rain jacket off, but if it starts getting windy, cold and wet, then it's nice to have the right clothes. If you do plan to spend much time in the wilds, then buy a midgie (mosquito) net, it packs up really small and if you do get attacked it can stop you from going insane. Scotland is probably the best country in Europe to travel by camper van. We have the law 'freedom to roam', which means you can, within reason, travel, camp, hike anywhere. Just remember to leave it as you found it, and take your litter away. Lots more tips to give - let me know if you have any questions 😀

@@choppedliver_reacts I'm born and bred in Scotland, but I'm currently living in France. I've spent over 50 years camping, climbing, hiking and travelling around Scotland. I even took a group of work colleagues from here in France, over to Scotland for a two week tour. They loved it. It's good to have some inside information. Let me know.

I went to Scotland for my honeymoon and loved every minute! Our off-the-beaten-path trip stopped at a place called Craigellachie with a lovely walk along the River Spey (and fantastic food), then up to Cromarty Firth where my ancestors lived. Then a long drive around Loch Ness, stopping wherever interesting castles or ruins beckoned, and finally back to Edinburgh. So beautiful and green!

The things to know about Irn Bru are, that in Scotland it consistently (and very proudly) outsells Coke-a-cola, It is a traditional hangover cure, It’s known as our ‘other national drink’, and it’s advertisements are very funny. In fact if you want to experience Scottish sense of humour, watching the 15 greatest Irn Bru ads is a good start 😉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍🏻

I'm Canadian and driving on the left wasn't an issue for me when I lived in New Zealand. However, make sure you pay extra attention as a pedestrian. Because it's ingrained in me to look to the left As I step off the curb, but that's a good way to get hit by a car from the right.

The scenery on the west coast of Scotland is far and away the best, from Ayr all the way up to Skye and beyond. Drive 20 minutes northwest from Glasgow and you're already in the Highlands. Barra is gorgeous and well worth the effort and cost of getting out there. If you fly on a clear day, the views across the other islands are spectacular, as is Castlebay with the McNeils' Kisimul Castle on its little island just off the harbour. (By the way, you were pronouncing Barra incorrectly, it's not "Baa-ra", the vowel sounds are short "a"s as in "Yank" or "America"!) I really hope you come to Scotland and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time here!

My top 5 of places to go in Scotland would be 1. Orkney for the unbelievable history, 2. Skye for the great scenery and wildlife, 3. Edinburgh for great architecture, 4. Glencoe for the mountains and deer, 5. Mull for the otters, puffins and Staffa. Other than that theres Ayrshire and Dumfries for Robert Burns, Abbotsford for Sir Walter Scott, Braemar for the highland gathering, Scottish islands for relaxing get aways and hiking, NC500 for a road trip, Shetland for history, Ponies, Orcas and Otters…….the list goes on and on………

You don't get to the 'real' Scotland until you are north of Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is many miles to reach the far north of Scotland.

The best part of Scotland is the far North West. Go up to Torridon and then up to Ullapool and go further north from there. Alternatively drive around the North Coast 500 (500 miles loop ) which goes around the far north of the mainland of Scotland. It travels through the most attractive areas of Scotland and also the quietest areas. Be aware that these areas have limited accommodation and facilities as they are remote by UK standards.

There is no "best part", it's all brilliant.........the North West may be your favourite part, and it is beautiful, but there is so much more to Scotland than just your favourite part........maybe you should've just said "My favourite part is the NW."........can't argue with that.

Hi there, resident of Fife in Scotland here. Even if you are trying to get away from the main cities, you can still end up in tourist traps. The main one is Isle of Skye, it is beautiful but overwhelmed by tourism - instead Isles of Mull or Lewis and Harris have similar levels of beauty and interest. Similarly Loch Ness, famous but not as beautiful as many other lochs - loch Tay, Loch Sheil and all the others just as beautiful if not more so. Go hiking, low level in Glen Nevis or anywhere along the coast. If you're really brave and like hiking, and can pay attention to the weather then climb a Munroe. But do your research first! Ben Lomond is good for beginners. Enjoy! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I live in Inverness in the Highlands. I actually gave up my car a couple of years ago. It’s so easy and convenient to travel around Scotland with buses and trains, (something I know Americans find shocking), both Apple Maps and Google Maps easily show you how to get around with public transport. It’s also a much better way to actually see the country as you can sit back and relax and watch the scenery whilst someone else is driving. Just like anything else in life just plan a little and it’s really easy to get around. Also forget doing the much treaded Edinburgh, Loch Ness and Isle of Skye, try other areas and escape the crowds. There are much nicer islands you can visit, each one unique from each other. For example a fantastic railway to travel is the Inverness to Kyle Of Lochalsh Line, it’s not over popular with tourists but the scenery is just jaw dropping, as is the Far North Line from Inverness to Wick and Thurso in the far North of the country, you can also connect with the ferry over to the Orkney Islands.. again superb bus network on the Orkney islands itself, easy to get around (ScotRail for trains, Stagecoach Orkney for buses in Orkney islands. Also Scottish Citylink coaches have interesting network of coach services which allow you to enjoy the scenery all over Scotland, particularly in the Highlands. Also folks tend to walk around much more here, most towns, villages and cities have everything within walking distances and you will discover much more than if just driving around. Travelling on trains is easy, just buy your ticket (the earlier the cheaper same as flights) on the ScotRail app, ticket shows as a QR code or buy a traditional ticket at a station. Our trains and buses are much more comfortable, clean and modern that what I’ve seen when in the US and of course much safer!

Look, short of calling a Scotsman English, there's not much we'd get in a shooshie about. Just relax, be yourself and talk to us. It's always nice if you pronounce things like Edinburgh correctly but hey, even well traveled Walter messed up saying Scotland, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We won't hang you for it but we'll probably snigger a wee bit. I'm Edinburgh born and bred so a wee bit biased, but a visit here is a must, but like Walter says, explore, there's much to see in Scotland. BTW, we have no bother understanding English/English or American/English unless we choose to at the time. Depends on the conversation. Looking forward to your review once you've been. 👍
