Mark Larkham who just explained Mount Panorama was a former Supercar driver, now commentator, but specialises in explaining the various parts of the race car and its workings. There are 2 videos to watch where you actually see the elevation of the track and the corners. 1. Greg Murphy fastest lap. 2. A former NASCAR driver now commentator was taken around the track as a passenger in a supercar, and there was no holding back by the driver. His comments as he was driven around the track are priceless.

The US has Indy 500, Europe has Le Mans... Australia has the Bathurst 1000. Held once a year on a public road. It is daunting even driving at the speed limit. It is one of the most dramatic sporting events in the world. Full of history and some of the most bizzare happenings. Rocks, Kangaroos, thrown beer cans, winning by 6 laps and winning after starting last place. This intro from Mark Larkham sums up the race perfectly.

@@clintosorus2647 1995 I believe. Maybe it was only from one lap down. Larry Perkins and Russell Ingall started third on the grid and were involved in an incident with Craig Lowndes (starting on pole) at turn one after Craig started slowly. This damaged one of the tyre valves resulting in them going from third to last on the first lap. This was also the year that Glen Seton, who never won Bathurst in his racing career, and the first driver I've had the pleasure of meeting, suffered a failure in the last handful of laps causing them to retire from what was a clear winning position. If Glenn had won, the race, it would've been 30 years to the day from when his father Bo had last won Bathurst. I've always been a Holden man, but Glenn Seton is the one Ford driver who has never won Bathurst really deserved to win one.

First went to Bathurst as a kid in 70 or 71. Hardie Ferodo. Walked up the Mountain to Skyline from the start through the course of the day. My Dad carried my sister and I in turns and an Esky all the way. There was an old gate where you could stand in the esses and I remember Colin Bonds GTR-XU1 ending up there broken down. Somebody went off the top of the mountain in a GTHO. First year I went was the last year of the Valiant Pacers and we went back every year until the first year of Commodores. All the great cars - A9X , the XB and XCs, GTHO, GTR-XU1. I must go back one year and if you can still do it, I will walk it!

Back then it was called the Hardie Ferodo 500 (500 miles). These days it's known as the Bathurst 1000 (1000KM) and it runs for around 6hrs. The drain is not the problem it's just there. The problem is the vertical load on the tyre. It's creates huge load on the contact patch and either you have positioned the car correctly and it holds, or the car understeers and collect the wall

Some context if it wasn't clear. The Bathurst 1000 is Australia's Indy 500. 1000km sprint around a circuit that is public road. That's 161 laps with races 20 years ago taking around 7-8 hours, now we're talking 5-6 hours. That's 622 miles of full pedal to the floor racing on a street circuit. This circuit has the fastest straight in the southern hemisphere. It has corners that you can't see around and have no idea when going into it if you're driving straight into an accident. It is one of the worlds great races. Most years when the F1 Grand Prix is held in Australia they will take an F1 car to Bathurst purely as a bit of media attention and do some laps. I personally would love nothing more than to see the Aus Grand Prix move from Melbourne to Bathurst.

The Bathurst weekend is in fact a 4 day long event in the first full weekend in October, raced on a track that is, for most of the year, public roads (hence the grate at Sulman Park). It is a pilgrimage for Aussie and New Zealand petrolheads. The main race is a 1000 km (621 primitive American miles) 6 hour race up and down a 6 km (3.8 mile) race track with two drivers pitting their wills against a This year it is Thursday, October 6th to Sunday, October 9th. Thursday is practice day for the Supercars and for the support categories, sometimes with 1 or two of the support categories having their qualifying. Friday is more practice for the Supercars (a total of 6 practice sessions of 1 hour each) while the categories, including the Supercars, have their qualifying and support category first races. Saturday is further supercar practice and support races then the Supercar Top 10 Shootout. Sunday is a 20 minute warmup for the Supercars and final races for the support categories in the morning then, around the middle of the day, the main event. If you want to attend there are travel and accommodation packages but they sell out months in advance, as do the camping sites around and inside the track. If you do attend, I recommend spending Friday (most packages use the Thursday as a travel day for getting to Bathurst, the town beside the track) on the top of the mountain, spending time at Skyline, Reid Park and McPhillamy Park. Then on Saturday, watching from the grandstands and, in between races, wandering the merchandise alley. Sunday is purely dedicated to the race. But one thing you just cannot appreciate is just how steep parts of the track are unless you walk it or get driven round it (some packages will take the tour bus around the track when it is open to the public in the evening or the Monday before you head the 2 hours back to Sydney) I recommend the tour packages as they organise travel between accommodation and track and other things as well.

To make it clear, it’s “Mount Panorama, Bathurst.” So the race track is affectionately referred to as both “Mount Panorama” and “Bathurst.” Bathurst is the town/city/regional centre it’s located in/near, and the actual site of the track is Mount Panorama (which is really probably better described as a big hill). One lap of the track is characterised by climbing up, over and back down the mountain, with big fast straights leading away from the descent, to a shortish start/finish straight, and then back onto a long hilly straight to start the climb again Also in reference to the drain, these are all public roads. It’s a street circuit, it’s just not in a city centre so it doesn’t immediately look like it. So yeah, the roads have to be built to a certain spec I guess. I’m guessing they could theoretically cover the drain for the race but unless they actually filled it in with tarmac there’d still be a change in grip if you put a tyre on it and it would still cause car control issues

Why is the grate there? This race is run on Bathurst's streets, blocked off for the race. For the rest of the year, people use these roads to get around Bathurst at legal speeds. A lot of enthusiasts go and camp out on the hill to see the race, barbeque and visit the beer tents. 60 kph is around 35mph. 60 mph is around 100 kph, some of our highway roads are 130 kph. So 300k is 180 mph. All the best.

Yep, it’s a 6 hour race and 161 laps. Gone are the days where you had to nurse a tired car to the finish line because they let you change the brake pads half way through the race and the reliability of the cars have reached the point that it’s no longer an endurance race where the last 30 laps are the most critical. It’s now a 161 lap sprint race. Everyone drives this track flat-out the whole way through. It’s steep, there are massive elevation changes that upset the car’s weight transfer, it’s bumpy, the walls are close and there are lots of blind corners that you rush into at 200mk/h. It’s our little version of the Nurburgring. Much smaller but just as daunting. 2006 was the last time a driver was killed on the circuit, Mark Porter clipped the wall at Reid park and after slamming into the outside wall. His wrecked car was sitting in the middle of a blind corner and sure enough was slammed into by David Clark at 200km/h. The impact was stomach turning. RIP Mark Porter.

People travel from all over Australia to pour into Bathurst. Great for the town. A lot of people arrive a week before Bathurst week begins & head straight to the camp grounds on top of The Mountain. There, a week of partying with new & old friends begin. The fans make the camp grounds come alive with self decorated Ford Only & Holden Only sites, but live as one solid community. People who'd get there early enough would head over to the track & drive steaks into the ground & rope off front row box sections. Then race day falls upon us & those sections are now transformed into outdoor lounge rooms. Tarpaulin roofs, lounge chairs, barbecues, multiple eskys, & generator for the tv. The ferals are ready. We've marinated for a week & it's time to get our race on. The atmosphere on The Mountain is contagious & something every race fan had to experience atleast once. That's before the fun police got their grubby mits on it & slapped it full of rules & regulations. One rule on The Mountain is now race fans are only allowed one carton of beer or bottle of spirits per person per day.🤣 The Mountain was Bathurst's Woodstock.

That's an overstatement given the original race was internationally recognised. The World Rally Champion won the race in 1966 and there were many well known champions from various marques that came here to drive. One of Allan Moffat's co drivers was Jacky Icks who was a world champion sports car driver.

The Great Race is 1000kms of pure awesomeness, Nothing like it anywhere in the world (In my opinion cause we all know some people are gonna disagree but to each there own) 6hours of nonstop hard racing where the smallest mistake could cost you the race and sometimes injuries. Been watching V8 Supercars since I was 5yrs old. Been to many of the tracks in the years but Bathurst not only has the best racing around but also the best vibes and motorsport culture. I was hyped when they went to Abu Dhabi in 2010/11 and 12 but Bathurst is still the pinnacle of Australian motorsport and I'm sure it'll be the pinnacle for many more years to come. Nothing compares to this Great Race.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but the Mt Panorama circuit has an elevation of over 400 metres. You don't notice how steep it actually is until you've driven on it. The TV doesn't do it justice. By the way nearly every turn is a blind turn, that's why there are so many accidents.

great reaction 😅 Bathurst - city in NSW Mt Panorama - a mountain outside the city with some roads Mt Panorama circuit - each turn has a name (this is pretty common for race tracks) Touring car racing - has a LOT of history in Australia, open wheelers (eg: F1) have never been as popular, as the cars based on what you can buy. Win on Sunday - Sell on Monday. The reasoning behind the racing and the marketing. You see a car win at the track, you go to the dealer and can but one - or something that look more or less like it!

Bathurst is usually every October. The event is over a number of days. On the Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the main driver and co-driver takes to like 9 practice sessions. On the Saturday, qualifying sessions lead to a Top-10 Shootout. The Shootout decides the final positions for cars 1 to 10 on the grid from 25 cars. Sunday is race day, 1000 kilometres the co-driver has a minimum number of laps to complete. Each car has to complete 7 pit stops. Bathurst brings a lot of safety cars, allowing cars down a lap a go by. This is Australia’s main racing event. Best Sunday after Footy Season.

he isnt really scaring you, but pointing out this race is deadly serious. There is a number of corners that a designed to be difficult for various reasons. There is the rare occasional death, but those cars are incredibly safe. However nothing is going to save you if you have already crashed and the car is compromised and someone comes flying around the corner at 200 and T Bones you and splits you in half. Everyone has to be on the ball and be professional. This is a normal public road any other day so naturally there are drains and gutters everywhere, just have to be aware of them all and avoid them. Also the top most peak of the track is a completely blind corner. You are looking at the sky and suddenly looking at the wall. So as everyone hits the top of the mountain they know to immediately turn left even before seeing the road again.

The 4 great road circuits still in use in the world are: Circuit de la Sarthe (Le Mans, France) Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps (Spa, Belgium) Nürburgring Nordschleife (Nürburg, Germany) Mount Panorama Circuit (Bathurst, Australia) Technically these days Spa is an actual race track since the roads are no longer open to public use outside of race weekends. The rest outside of racing are still to this day public roads. As an Aussie I've had the pleasure of driving a road car around Bathurst. Honestly, television will never do it justice no matter how good technology gets.

2:30 ... YES, the race is a once-a-year 6 HOURS long event that's part of the V8 Supercar circuit ... it's 1000 kilometres (620 miles) long, with AT LEAST two driver changes, and several tyre changes, one of which involves brake pad changes on all 4 wheels. All taking place on a 6.213 km (3.861 mile) track that has an elevation change of 174 m (571 ft) and top speeds of 300km/h (186 mph) that, for most of the year, is a public road. And what you see at 8:00 is the Chaz Mostert 2015 crash, when he ricocheted off two walls before hitting the third and wiping out the race marshal's station, all while destroying his car and breaking his wrist, thigh bone and knee in a multiple 50+G impact. If you look up 'Bathurst 1000' there's several videos including several full races and several "Greatest Crashes" and Highlight clips.
