I live 15 min away from Atlantic Ocean Road, when the weather is good, it's a really nice place for a walk, picnic or even bbq. It's a really cool place during storms too, the waves and the winds out there is a powerful experiance.

I finally got to go there this spring. Gorgeous! Not that nature in my own part of Norway (Lillehammer area) is anything to sneeze at, but this was a different slice of our heavenly nature, AND the architecture of the bridge itself blends in so perfectly.

As someone in the comments in the stormy video said. They close this road, and bridges all over the place, when it ges dangerous. If there is above a certain wind speed. Cars can actually blow off the bridges.
@tigerlily-jf6bg18 күн бұрын
I spent my early childhood at Hustadvika and have never experienced wind like that any other place.😂 It can get pretty gnarly. I remember walking home from the grocery store with my dad in strong wind; he held my hand and I just took flight (I was around three at the time) so he had to leave the groceries at the side of the road to carry me home. Otherwise I would have been gone with the wind. Literally.😂
@MrDanAng1Күн бұрын
8:03 It isn't always peaceful and safe, but it is always beautiful! During a light storm like in the video, it's still perfectly safe, but it can get really wild and unsafe there at times, it is temporarily closed a few times per year or so due to wind storms.

I grew up on the other side of the mountain you see at the end of the first video. My mother used to take me hiking up that mountain. One day, she pointed towards the islands to the east and said that at some future time there's going to be a series of bridges across them, connecting Averøy to the mainland. It sounded like complete science fiction to me, but half a decade later it was there! For me, the Atlantic Road is where I go when I want to experience rough weather and see the waves crashing. A friend of mine got a free shower while walking across one of the bridges, which was a slightly scary experience if I understood her correctly. So I certainly can understand that others enjoy it more when the wind is calmer, though.

I Come from Hustadvika, and have been on this road many times. We used to go fishing there when i was little. ☺️ It is still a popular place to go fishing for tourists and locals.
@lizpaulsen374317 күн бұрын
I have driven this road many times. It's very beautiful, but it's absolutely not only a tourist road. It's kind of 'a main road' in this area; connecting a lot of islands and also a connection to the city of Kristiansund.

The latest James Bond movie - No time to die - has a scenery from this road where JB drives really fast over Storseisundbrua (the largest bridge on this road). Happy Xmas Tyler!

the place you paused and timeskipped in the video is a large parking plot for 40 cars or so.. with a public toilet, and a walking trail around the entire island.. during summer its very colorful because theres lots of flowers there.. massive tourist attraction, and is one of the main reasons why so many roadtrip tourists drive north via bergen, it is to drive by this road.
@kroidenfravest993117 күн бұрын
Must admit i grinned when you got the sound of "Ø" in "Averøy" right. We'll make a viking out of you yet. 😄I actually got a certificate when i drove across it at the official opening 7th of July 1989, but you could drive across before it was officially opened. It was a toll-road too, but the traffic across was a lot larger than anticipated, so the toll booths was removed after just 10 years instead of the projected 15 years. As for the rough weather, being on the road during this was and probably still is a big hit with european tourists, especially the germans. Probably something about being able to feel the power of the ocean directly, which you are unlikely to do in inland Europe. Oh, almost forgot, hope you all have a great Christmas! 🎄

People actually live out there, we have tons of little islands with 1 or 2 families living on them. Back in the day they used row boats to get to shore and get everything they needed. Almost died out today but there are still places that are not really connected

I drove my car over that road this morning,, in the dark, to visit a customer in Averøya. It was daytime when i returned. By the way, Trollstigen is not very far away either... You have Key West in USA......
@linbelejacobsen503717 күн бұрын
One of the things to look out for is salt water. I live in a fjord and we have flooding and high tide regularly and the cars dont last long if they are exposed to salty water often. We do salt our roads during winter, but its different if you get sea water into all cracks and crannies of your car. They sometimes close this road when its too dangerous to drive it.
@larsjrundflesland932613 күн бұрын
Fun fact: When they built this road, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration intended this road to make it attractive for the inhabitants to live at the islands, but instead the islanders finally got something that allowed them to leave the islands and live somewhere else in Norway, making the islands less populated.

with this wave size it is not a problem, but bigger waves and stronger wind usaly triggers closing of the bridges, and it is pretty common on bridges all over Norway, driving into seawater like this is not good for the car, seawater makes it rust like crazy over some time.
@Randomdude21-e18 күн бұрын
They shot some james bond movie clips on that road. And 3 days before the team was doing the filming and closing the road, Bmw cars had a streetmeet and covered the whole road in tire marks after spinning their tyres😂 it was in the news😂

My parents live in the nearby town (I'm in the area right now for Christmas), we've driven there some times, it's a pretty quick drive, and while it's nice with the view on both sides, I personally don't see it as that special (I guess with growing up not far from it, I just view it as another coastal road). It is fun whenever it shows up in movies though, and it's always hilarious where it's supposed to be in said movies, lol.

I guess Tyler had never seen US1 going to Key West (the Overseas Highway) but of course it is only 113 miles long.
@BizzyX7814 күн бұрын
----- @kerouac2 ----- - The stretch of the 'US1' going through the Keys that part alone is roughly 36 times as long as the road in Norway and with over 5 times as many bridges. To be fair, the 'USA' is freaking huge, roughly just over '25,6 times' the size of Norway(Not the Kingdom of Norway with all its' territories). And yet there are many Norwegians that haven't seen everything that Norway has to offer, me included. So it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Tyler hasn't seen or let alone driven the 'US1' in person. -----

Cars driving in places like this can't last long. The amount of salt water they are exposed to has to take its toll and rust the car pretty fast. At least you need to clean it good quite often to get all the salt off the car.
