The clutch was a workout, the transmission was a nightmare, and the cab was so cramped and uncomfortable it felt like punishment. And yet, here I was, told I needed driving hours for a commercial license as if I hadn’t already driven a lifetime’s worth of miles. What really floored me was the mentality. I remember driving a Mack dump truck in Canada-one of those half-cab beasts that rattles your bones and leaves your spine begging for mercy. Back in Europe, we used to joke that a Mack truck “kills three drivers before it dies.” Turns out, that wasn’t much of a joke. These machines aren’t built for drivers; they’re built for some profit-driven agenda that doesn’t give a damn about the person sitting behind the wheel. And yet, in this country, people worship these trucks like sacred cows. It’s almost religious. I’ve seen drivers defend these outdated machines as if their lives depended on it. Why? Are we so wrapped up in this capitalist race for profits that we’ve forgotten how to prioritize progress? And that brings me to the bigger issue: capitalism. Look, I’m not here to tell anyone what to believe. If you like capitalism, good for you. But let’s be honest about what it’s doing. It’s not about innovation or quality; it’s about profits-profits over people, over safety, over progress. We’ve convinced ourselves that we’re the best, but all we’re doing is putting lipstick on a pig and parading it around like it’s a beauty queen. The rest of the world sees through it, even if we don’t. Bruce, I see you poking at this in your videos-carefully, diplomatically. You don’t outright say it, but I can tell you’re frustrated too. I live in Europe, interested in trucks, and must admit I find the looks and style of many US trucks very cool, but has grown on me over the years that kind of old school Peterbilt truck in the video could be fine as a hobby, or some small trips now and then, while one might want a more modern and possible more comfortable truck as the daily driver, to make a living.😊

As a Swede that has never been to the US, this analysis is very interesting. I do think however, that most people think USA is some sort of capitalist paradise, but I believe otherwise... My view is that the cause of the troubles regarding the sub-par trucks have more to do with the protectionist policies that have been massive in the US for so long in so many fields... They have been implemented to "protect" their domestic industries to make sure that people get to keep their jobs and so on. What they are protected against however, is fair competition in a free market. The policies destroys the free market just to please the greedy companies that don't want to have to deal with any upcoming competitors that might offer a better deal than them, whether it is cheaper-, more luxurious- or better quality products. These policies have more in common with socialist- and communist regimes since they are working completely and utterly against the capitalist ideas of a free market with free competition. I couldn’t believe how shite they were compared to what we have in the UK. Everything was big, heavy and inefficient. I'm not a trucker, although I have some familiarity with Scania cabs in a past life where my management responsibilities included our four Scania units. Instead, I'm just a Brit with a massive sense of curiosity and a real interest in all things transportation. So can I just say, I found this video amazingly interesting and instructive! I learned SO much! And it reinforced what I had already pretty well gathered - that, contrary to what most folk in Europe probably assume, European "HGV" trucks are bigger, more powerful AND probably more advanced than US semi trucks. This video was a real eye-opener. Well done, buddy!

You forgot to mention little detail about the mudguards. When it rains, the Peterbilt creates a wall of mist behind the truck, which is great fun when driving next to or behind such a truck and see almost nothing. The Scania has anti-spray mud flaps on the mudguards, which almost completely eliminates that fog when you drive behind it. If you look closely, you can see the studs of those mats sticking into your mud flaps. The anti-spray mud flaps are required by law in Europe for trucks over 7.5 metric tons. And what about safety? Does the Peterbilt, just like the Scania, also have.. Driver Assistance Systems (DAS) like... *Airbags *ABS *Lane Departure Warning Systems (LDWS) *Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) *Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) That's also the reason why Europeans always read the RTFM! (Read The F*cking Manual) :p

Aussie here, i'm 100% for the Kenworth T909's here in Aus but after a while the whole big bonnet thing dies down. Drove a new Scania S series and it was honestly a whole new world, kind of like jumping from a mid spec Toyota Camry to a high spec BMW/MERC. Comfort is phenomenal, since custom Euro trucks in Australia is still slowly becoming a thing you can't beat a well put together US/AUS spec Kenworth/Western-Star/Freightliner etc. That being said, any day of the week i'll prefer a Euro for comfort.

Peterbilt is what happens when you live by the "If ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra. Their trucks look like they've spent about $5 on engineering over the past 50 years and, instead, have just raked in profits. The Scania is on a whole different planet. You can't even compare them. Its like comparing a Sherman tank to an Abrams. It gets even better when you compare the prices. $200,000+ for the Peterbilt? For that money you get painting over the wiring harnesses and halogen headlamps. I'd be embarrassed to spend that much on such a shit product.

It's just laziness, and coping is all it is. American manufacturers are lazy, and this is the end result. They'd rather spend millions on litigation and lobbying vs. engineering a quality product. This isn't just a jab at Peterbilt either. All of them are still selling antiquated conventional trucks vs modern cab over designs.

@@alhernandez-y8x Maybe they wouldn't think they'd like them till they drive them. One thing not mentioned here is how much easier cabovers are to maneuverer around.. Shorter wheelbase and lifting rear makes them turn super tight, and no hood makes it way easier to see exactly where you are. Being higher up also makes it even easier to see ahead. Jacking the cab up isn't exactly difficult either (and you don't even need to for any normal maintenance - it's all behind the front grille). You just press a button and it lifts itself.

I got out of a fairly new Scania and ended up in a Kenworth here in Australia. Both are truck and quad dog tippers. Scanias and Kenworths are from a different universe. The Euro trucks are so much better to drive, comfortable and quiet. I feel exhausted after getting out of the Kenworth after an average 12hr day.

(3:50) Not projector headlights, those are reflectors. (5:00) You can spec with either FAI (front air intake) or HAI (high air intake) which would be mounted high up on the right side behind the cab, this means the air deflectors have a cutout with a grille for the air intake and the air filter would be located behind the cab. (6:25) The sideskirts also do a lot for aerodynamics in addition to side underrun protection. on lots of european trucks (tractors mainly) there is a rubber lip on the top of the side skirt which reduces drag even more (good for fuel economy). (20-ish?) I will add that Scania also does passive regeneration continuously (the soot is oxidised with the help of nitrogen dioxide), if you're doing long hours idling or low load scenarios and the filters start to clog and the differential pressure across the filters (there are two) goes too high the EMS will start a forced regeneration. (22:10) Never lay under the truck with only the air suspension raised, would not advise. (22:10) Easiest way to replace the filter is to remove the rubber strap holding in the air intake pipe, and then removing 4 screws to remove the top cover on the air filter housing, allows you to pull the filter straight up. (24:23) Scania only has a synchro on the splitter gear on the newer transmissions (G25/G33/G38) to reduce drivetrain loss. This is made up for by having axle brakes on both main shaft and layshaft to synchronize the rotational speed. Another interesting part of the GW-box is that they do not have a seperate reverse gear but instead two planetary gearsets at the output shaft that handles both range and reverse. This allows the gearbox to have 8 reverse gears and 14 forward gears. Suggest you try to get a copy of Multi which is the workshop manual software, lots of really good function descriptions of most components on the vehicle alongside the repair manuals. mvh mechanic Scania.

Bruce, you've just explained why, as a long-suffering trucker, I never want to drive a US truck again! I had the "bad luck" of driving a "show truck" for a short time... it was over 30 years ago, I can't remember what kind, I think it was a "Kenni" with such a flat cabin that with my 6.4" I had to duck my head on every bump to avoid hitting the ceiling, and the thing had a long gear stick that was as "crisp and precise as a wooden spoon in pudding and with the 360 ​​hp you couldn't even pull a 1-axle trailer up the hill without losing speed. BUT also how CHEAP the quality of the manufacturing is. Here in Europe there are certain standards that have to be met, for example the tail lights. Amen.. They stopped modernising trucks in the US, the day after they started driving the WW2 leftovers,, they are still driving them now. EU + the law and rules we have, forces the truckbuilding company's to MODERNISE and improve the trucks... More over, we have law's to protect drivers. If i go work at a company here, that gives me a truck to work with, and the chair is broken,than by law, i can refuse to work with it, and stil get a days pay. Its the LAW, that says,, you need to provide your workers, with decend, tools and equipment. That is 100% Functional. If in the summer the airco stopppes working, my bos wil give me annother truck, untill mine is fixed, and give me back a truck with working airco. One of the seat brands is ISRI, that chair is better that the seat your CEO is sitting in at his office,,,,🤗🤭 so there in lies the reason EU trucks, are build for comfort of the driver, so he can do his job safe, and healthy. and tthe EURO 6 demands, makes that truckcompanies have to modernise and improve the engines drivetrains and right down to the tires. evrything gets better evry year. if i compare that to the Pete,, wel,, the name, Dinosaur comes to mind. that looks at the skyes, and sees UFO like trucks passing over his head...🤭 PS>>> PACCAR took over DAF,,, im still wondering why they didnt or don't use some of the features from DAF in your PETE.... Few comments from a long time Scania driver here in northern Europe: Standard weight of trucks here is 50 metric tons, with some road-train setups which can be 60-70 metric tons. This varies depending on country, and max weight here requires 3 axle trucks, which is also what's advantageous (/essential) on winter conditions. I don't remember what you call the additive there, we just call it adblue, and if you refill it at every refuelling my guess is something's off. Depending on size of tanks etc, it's usually every 2-3 refuellings, similar to what you experienced with your US truck. The only time I need to turn off my fridge is if I'm going on vacation for more than a week (but then again, outside temperature is often the same as the fridge anyway). And in worst case, I can monitor and control this as well as cabin heater etc from my phone. Other than that, good video. Great to see you're happy with your Scania.

As a UK truck driver, I always thought the benefits of the bullnose was power and space, because you could fit a massive engine under the hood in front of you, instead of squeezing it under the cab, and the long chassis gives more space for the drivers living area. So to hear the Scani is more powerful AND more efficient AND has more space AND is safer AND has more creature comforts AND looks better (IMO), was such a surprise! Other than that small area between the back of the seat and the bunk, what is the point of it being so long? And you can’t even stand up in it! It’s not even like you can say it’s for getting under low bridges, because the tall stacks, and the trailers are higher than the truck, why aren’t you taking advantage of all this space, I thought everything was supposed to be bigger and better in Murica, in this case it’s just longer, WHY?! You even specked the Scania with a longer frame for no other reason than it looks more American, in the UK we run 6X2 because we can run up to 44 Tonnes, but without the frame extension. In the UK, the spec of truck you have would also have a crane fitted behind the cab, all run from a PTO off the engine. You talk about all the space you have in the frame as a benefit, and I’m sure mechanics would agree, it makes it easier to work on, but it is just wasted space, how much steel frame is needed to make a truck look American? and for what benefit? I know I’m biased but I can’t even get on board with the looks of the thing, I can’t get past being able to see all the rivets holding the sheet metal together, it just gives it a “made by your local tin basher” look that the rest of the automotive industry left behind a very long time ago. Even farm equipment is getting body panels that give them a modern sleek look. If I gave you a steel box riveted together, with complex internal mechanisms and asked you to make it look good, and you gave me back a steel box with the rivets still visible, but you covered the mechanism in paint and bolted on a few shiny bits while telling me it looks good because they are polished stainless not chrome, I would ask you why it still looks like a box held together by rivets, and why you spent so much money on stainless if you have to tell me it’s stainless for me to appreciate it? If I got given a truck I couldn’t stand up in, I would quit, just like I would quit if I was told I had to ask my customers for tips to pay for my own healthcare! Well done Bruce for standing up and showing how the “American dream” is all propaganda, peddled by the people who make their money by stiffing their hardworking employees by giving them the least they can get away with, to make the biggest profit for themselves!

What everyone seems to forget is that Volvo is active for decades on the US market and even they are building "true" US trucks. If there was a market for it, they would have started to sell the FH/FM etc... in the US already, instead they recently (last year I think) presented a brand new VN range designed from the ground up for the US market while it would have been way easier to market the F series there, they could even build it since they produce trucks in the US. Yet still building trucks with a nose... And a current Volvo is probably the closed truck to a European one they will see on the US roads since they use EU developed stuff in their US trucks. Don't get me wrong, I truly hope that Bruce succeeds in his endeavour but I think the chances are slim to none...

Jula had a specific shipping route (Falköping - Skara) where a specific company was allowed to drive double trailers, 32m long vehicle trains, before it only recently became generally allowed, to trial the concept and evaluate it's feasibility. The logging trucks you mentioned is the same idea.

140,000 lbs (63,500 kg) is a standard Canadian max GVW here in Canada, usually as an 8 axle 27m (88ft) overall length "Super B-Train". Also almost anywhere you have multi-lane highways, qualifying Carriers can get LCV (Long Combination Vehicle) permits to operate combinations up to 41m (134ft) overall length with two 53ft trailers in tow. They've been running for so long in the 3 "Prairie" provinces (Alberta / Saskatewan/ Manitoba) that they're just seen by the public as a normal Transport Truck. America's 80 klb Interstate limit is a big drag on the efficiency of it's transport sector, and I believe one of the lowest (if not the lowest) GVW (and corresponding max axle weights) in the G7, nevermind most of the industrialized world.

I agree with all of the above. Here in America it may have a lot to do with asphalt load bearing weight. Here in North Eastern Utah we seem to have one paving company. You didn't mention that on scania in the start-up check menu, you can check clutch plate wear and brake pad wear . I'm not sure if you get that on American trucks or not. I can also confirm my fridge, which also has a freezer compartment, lasts for days without killing that battery. I never bother turning it off over the weekends

To be fair, it won't have to. That's the kind of truck that's not gonna stray far from the US highway, you wouldn't go into "tight corner-rich environment" with this truck, unlike in Europe where that's just not possible. Still it's much longer than necessary though. Longer wheelbase makes the truck a bit more comfortable and stable to ride than the same truck with shorter frame, but it's still ridiculous how old school US trucks have a whole football field worth of completely empty, wasted space between the cab and the trailer. I've done the maths, and some of those American tractors are longer than freaking buses in Europe.

These classic long-nosed trucks are built for US highways only, which are much straighter and wider than European roads. Most of the US trucking is highway cruise, unlike in Europe where trucks need to go to narrow and mountainous areas often.

Problem with manufacturer specific parts is availability. Volvo/Mack for example, when you breakdown after 8pm and before 7am or something around those hours, you're done until the next day, if it's on a friday then you're done until Monday, unless you can get very lucky and find someone who has the part you need. That's where several branded parts on every truck becomes a good thing because people tend to keep those parts in stock.

American trucks are built more like hotrods with many different manufacturers providing all the parts. Probably has worked fine all these years but with the drawback of fitment issues. Components, wires and hoses blocking access to the thing you need to replace or reach. It may also be an issue on the Scania too but as Bruce has mentioned in earlier videos, each thing has its own place and is more organized. Both trucks have their own kind of charm and it is up to the buyer to decide on which one to choose in the end.

I run one of these in Australia, I love all the American stuff, but driving the Scania is an awesome experience. It's such a comfortable, powerful, and technically advanced vehicle. It's makes driving a truck doing this job a breeze. In fact I have the higher roof version and can stand up fully inside the cab. A funny little perk in this truck the dealers won't know is when you kick your work boots off at the end of the day, open your door sit them on the top step and shut the door. They won't fall out, they get aired out and you won't have to worry about carrying dirt from your boots on the floor.😊

⁠@@notsure6182you must not be from the US so here’s a little history lesson, Volvo USA came from the leftovers of White motor company, they bought them out and partnered with GMC for their entry into the US market. The GMC partnership was a total failure, but the trucks up until the brand new truck that is just coming out are still very similar to how the old White trucks were made. The new truck is finally bringing over the knowledge from the European Volvo trucks. The engines we get and they get are similar, not the same. The trucks themselves were built like every other American truck, same thing with a different cab, that’s what all American trucks are, not much has changed on them for the last 40 years underneath it all. And you want to toot the Detroit horn, today’s Detroit is nothing but a Mercedes with a Detroit logo on it, same for their transmissions. in europe, and especially germany you are not even allowed to drive without mudguards if you do not have a trailer behind it (costs you quite a bit of money), if you drive solo you MUST have mudguards because of the splashing water for the person behind you. There are trailers that can break the mudguards or in a strange situation, that is why the upper part is removable. AdBlue (BlueDEF) is always high at the beginning, the truck needs to be run in for a while and then it will drop by itself.

Oh yes, it will work. I drive a Scania Streamline V8 520 with loads of up to 70 tons (155,000 lbs) and use about 37(9.77)-60(15.85) liters/100km(62) of diesel on normal topography. I only need to refill the AdBlue tank (80(21) liters) after approximately 3,000(792.51) liters of diesel.

Simple really. The US doesn't have a free market, it has protectionism. With no competitive market, innovation stands still and you get left behind. The US has been in this protective market bubble for years now, and it shows in the marked difference between these two trucks. Allowing EU trucks into the US market now (without tariffs or other forms of protection) would kill the US industry in no time at all.

Imo, it's all about culture. EU has plenty of protectionism. America has a weird "work is supposed to be hard, making it easier is bad for your character" kind of mentality. My guess is that the American producers of trucks will combine their efforts to get rid of this Scania as soon as possible. Scania wipes the floor with their products and to match it they will have to invest so heavily that they will get in serious financial trouble. As an example I only have to mention Toyota crushing the Big 3 on the carmarket, despite all effort from the formerly mentioned 3 to run them into the ground. Once a bunch of American truckers can get a real taste of how that thing rides and hauls there is no stopping the revolution.

The US manufacturers have so many contacts in the state, senate and so on. What would probably happen is that they will ban any competition from the outside and keep going at the same direction as they do now. I know, because we could deliver parts of better quality and to lower price from Norway to USA, and the local manufacturer got the authorities to accept a local rule that said the part had to be made locally. When doing things that way, USA have no incentive to make any big leaps in technology.

They are much better on fuel and technology because they want to appeal to those who care about that. Still not on the same level of technology of a Scania, but driving a Peterbilt longhood old school truck like this one is a CHOICE that people make. Theres a reason why in North America theres still trucks that run from the 1980s. Its because people CHOOSE to keep those due to preference. The culture for many in North America is different and Europeans don't understand that.

Pete’s are smaller in terms of long hooded trucks. The kenworth w900L is much taller. I’m 6’2 and can easily see over a Pete hood, but not for the kenworth. And the kenworth has a bigger sleeper too.

As someone who isn't a trucker, I found this very informative. I think the customisations you are doing to the Scania are tasteful, and it is appropriate to customise it in an "American style". I see truckers customise their trucks in Europe, too. As long as it doesn't compromise performance or go against the "spirit" of these modern European trucks, I think it is fair game.

Why do I tell you that... when I see the paint in the chassis of the Peterbilt and how the cables are attached I get old memories. And another thing... when you sit in the Peterbilt your shoulder hardly comes over the dashboard and steering wheel. And the switches..... how many and how old fashioned. No screen, is there a computer in it? Sorry to be so negative but it seems to me that there is a backlog in the US truck world.

Well the Peterbilt will probably last twice as long as this Scania, maybe three times as long, that counts for a lot. Fancy is great and comfortable but when it breaks down without the warranty it will cost a lot to repair it, that is the problem. And they are expensive.

The day your custom length frame starts down the line, the parts for your build are in place down the line. Another thing to point out on the tail lights is the different regulamentations: in the EU is mandatory that the turn signals have a different colour (amber colour) than the tail and brake lights (red colour), instead, in the USA the tail and brake lights can also be the used as the turn signals, which mean that the red light starts to flash when the turn signal is turn on

I find it strange that everyone in the US takes their car test in an automatic and yet when it comes to Trucks they are still using twin splitters in a crash box. Last time i even saw a crash box was early 90's Also i think Bruce said i a previous video that the parking brake would stop it getting type approval for the US and yet they are using circa 1950's push/pull air valves straight out of the dash!

You don't need too do that, the scania has a way better fuel mileage. You should do a brakingtest on both tho. Scania stops in half the distance (loaded and empty are almost the same with scania)

Hi we had freightliner agrossy isx 530 hp cummings trucks and volvo fh16 520 hp the American trucks is way heavy on diesel we running tuatlliners superlinks 36 tons, nothing against usa trucks but for us in south africa itvwas better business choice and the usa trucks parts was more expensive and took longer to ship than Europe trucks

A tip regarding your connection to your trailers is that if you use quality LED lights, those can be powered with anything between 9-36v, so you can use the standard 24v Scania outlet as long as it is not powering EBS/ABS. Here in Norway most trucks are a 3 axle configuration and also 4 axle if heavy load applications.

Because of a lack of competition the US truck makers have largely been charging a lot of money for a product that they haven't revolutionised since the 1960's. They look like classic trucks. US car makers basically did the same, the got away with selling crude poorly made products that didn't handle well and drank fuel. Only in the past 5-10 years could you even think about driving a US car round a bend.

22:10 No, you don't take out the airfilter from the bottom on the Next-gen Scanias, that was on the older generation Scanias, you take them out from the top of the airbox on the Next-gens. The only filter you need to replace from underneath the truck on the Next-gens equipped with a V8 is the transmission oilfilter (and possibly the ad-blue filter), every other filter is replaced from the top. And the torque in the 770hp Scanias is not 2800 Nm, it's actually 3700 Nm. The Scanias that has 2800 Nm torque is the 530hp trucks.

No need for a pissing contest, if someone builds a better product then it's the better purchase. If anything, competition is good and might force peterbilt to innovate and update a lot stuff they have, which is very oudated for today standards. States are very forward in certain things but every far behind in others. But for whatever reason it's always looked down upon. Example public transportation, from buses, trains, trams. When i was NYC, it's like going back in time. It's so bad. Dirty trams, tram stations, no proper security, no proper fences to avoid people getting pushed/falling. All trams are manually driven, no automation. Supposed to be one of the richest cities in the world. pfft. But i mean China, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France etc all have already built trams/trains. Buy them in, time to upgrade the public transportation. Not everything has to be american built, can't be best at everything.
