As someone who's played both sports (League and Gridiron) for years - everytime I hear the word 'padding' from a fellow Aussie it makes me laugh. There's no padding. Its solid reinforced plastic with a bit of soft backing on body side so it doesn't scrape against you, and basically a motorbike helmet. I had more 'padding' in my Wayne Pearce Perseus shoulder pads in the late 80's ;) There are far more brutal collisions in Gridiron than league, especially nowadays with shoulder charges banned. Gridiron is a power and collision sport where every yard is vital since you only have 10 to work with for 4 tackles, and if they make that 10yards (9 and a bit metres) they get another set of 4 tackles. In League we have an entire field (100m) to play out 5 tackles and we kick on the last. Gridiron tackling is designed to hit/collide and stop any forward movement from the point of contact. But the funniest bit is - every year, after the first night of full contact with gear on, the number of blokes who don't turn up again is piss funny. They find out it's not all 'softness' and 'padding' and don't come back lol, we usually take bets on how many will suddenly get put on night shift or have to go away for work. Like clockwork, every year ;)

Gridiron is stop start all the time. Takes about 4hrs to play 4 15min quarters. Meanwhile, NRL is pretty much non stop for 2 40min halves. NRL takes far more stamina and there are far less ‘set plays’… and all players are attackers, defenders and take kicks for goal (and not from just directly in front of the posts). It’s not uncommon for a kick to be taken from just inside the sideline. And they will often be successful too.

@@freespiritgirl73 I grew up on AFL, since it was VFL actually, but once I saw my first NRL game I was hooked. Having followed both sports for many years, I can appreciate the differences of both games, I can say from my point of view that NRL is much faster, it's not slowed down by the rules; marks, kicks, tume it takes to pick your target, in the backs, & everyone's annoying favourite the annoying kicking back & forth across goal time wasting! Ther are so many differences that speed up the game of NRL, it's continually kept moving, 2 x 40min halves, only one short break in-between, not at the end if every quarter as in AFL, it's just 2 halves of bone crunching skill, action & speed, if there's no winner at the end then it goes to golden point, until the first team to score wins. All players are running for that 80mins, & defending their line in goal, & trying to hold on to the ball wet or dry when 4- 5 massive bloke up end you & try to wrestle it from you, sorry it's my opinion NRL is much tougher & faster than AFL. Shoulder pads were introduced into the NRL in the 1980s as a way to protect players from the increased physicality of the game. With harder tackles and high-impact collisions becoming more common, these pads were designed to absorb shock and shield areas like the shoulders and chest. They quickly gained popularity, particularly among forwards and players in high-contact roles, who benefitted from the added protection. By the 1990s, shoulder pads were widely used across the league, aligning with a period when the sport prioritized strength and physical dominance. However, as rugby league evolved, several factors led to the gradual decline in shoulder pad use. One was the improvement in player training and conditioning, which emphasized strength and injury prevention through fitness, reducing the need for added protective gear. Concerns over player safety and aggression also influenced this shift. Padded shoulders sometimes encouraged aggressive tackles, with players more likely to lead with the shoulder. Phasing out shoulder pads promoted safer tackling techniques, with fewer players using excessive force. Additionally, rule changes and a shift in play style placed greater emphasis on speed, agility, and skill over brute strength. As a result, the NRL saw an influx of smaller, faster, and more agile players who preferred a lighter, less restrictive uniform. Modern jerseys were designed to be close-fitting and lightweight, giving players greater freedom of movement without the bulk of shoulder padding. In summary, shoulder pads fell out of use in the NRL by the early 2000s due to changing game dynamics, an increased focus on safe play, and a player preference for agility and comfort. The game had moved beyond heavy-contact play, and as training and tackling techniques evolved, so too did the need for protective equipment like shoulder pads.

Look up Greg Inglis, one of the absolute best to play the code, his "dont argues" , step, speed, agility, brut force and post try celebrations were all mint. An all round entertainer of the game

Cleary is part of a team that's won 4 grand finals in a row, been to 5 grand finals. Grand finals are the equivalent of the super bowl

After playing all three codes (AFL, NRL and Rugby union) I still think AFL is the most physical game mainly because in NRL and Rugby you are facing your opponent and know when you are going to get hit. In saying that I was always on the small side of players so spent most of my time on the wing or as fullback. During a game of AFL you can be tackled and bumped from any direction.

I also have played all three and league is by far tests your heart muscle as a forward trying to bend the defensive line

Nrl is actually a world game now, 26 countries play it and have a world cup too
@MrAhuapai2 ай бұрын
No they dont. NRL is the name of the Australian competition much like NFL is an American competition . There is one non Australian team in the NRL and thats the New Zealand Warriors. Rugby league is the term for the world game.

4:45 that’s a shoulder charge which is a illegal tackle in NRL I have been following the team called the Rabbitohs since I think 2011 which is the team in read and green yes I’m only 18 but it is really entertaining to watch especially when you are in one of the front rows of the grandstands 4:45

Need to watch state of origin hits. It's 2 states of Australia where you can have team mates playing against each other and the ref's are a bit more lenient on what happens as it's an Aussie grudge match
