We actually have a pretty big banana industry here in australia and most of the bananas we buy are locally grown. Buying local to try and support farmers is a pretty big thing here. We take care of our own. Also, in some places in australia, if you have chickens and they lay an egg on a really hot day, you actually have to revive them in a bucket of cold water because they pass out.

Golden Gaytime ice creams were first released in Australia in 1959, before the word gay came to mean something other than "lighthearted and carefree", its original meaning. Magpies are birds which are widely known to 'swoop' you during mating season. They will chase you and peck your face or head if you are too near their nest (passing under or near it etc). However, they also have beautiful vocalisations and can be quite friendly, and befriend people. Out of mating season theyre beautiful birds.

It's worth noting that not all Magpies swoop during their mating season, which is basically the entirity of Spring but can extend into early Summer. Depending on how Spring actually kicks off, they may mate early or later on (can depend on where you are in the country) which may lead to some birds having a second set of chicks later on in the year if they had their initial round early on and the weather remains right in early Summer (November/December). The whole period is pretty lengthy, usually the common period is August to October, but it can extend into December - you really just need to be aware where you live or are travelling, there's good websites and peopel tend to talk about it anyway, so you'll know when the swooping starts to subside and all is well with the world again. Also, and most importantly, only a % of Magpies even swoop anyway so it's not like if you see a Magpie during the season you're doomed to be swooped. More often than not, so long as you're acting calm and give them some space, they'll leave you alone as well.

I’m from Sydney and I just assumed everywhere had double decker trains. Also not only do we grow bananas, we export them and Coffs Harbour NSW is home to the big banana. As someone who lived through them (like most Australians) the bushfires were insane, we had a firestorm rip through my town and it was like Hell on Earth. The sky was black with smoke and the horizon for as far as the eye could see was a glowing amber. I could hear trees exploding from the heat with a hiss of bubbling sap, and it was quite scary to watch the fire front gobbling up kilometres of bushland in seconds. At one stage the “fires near me” App icons denoting where a bushfire was happening at the time was basically covering the entire eastern seaboard and the majority of NSW and VIC. It’s not a time Aussies will forget in a hurry.

As an Australian, currently my area can't figure out if we should be having summer or winter - I went from enjoying the local outdoor swimming pool to wearing a jumper in the past week (and back again). Also, I'm quite disappointed that they didn't show one of the fire danger signs we have - they've got a arm that gets adjusted manually based on the weather (I assume the fire brigade does it, but I've never checked) to represent how high the risk of a bushfire is (that's Australian for wildfire), and the second lowest option is "high" - so it's probably not surprising that it doesn't stop at "extreme".

Fun fact about those two-storey trains (they’re in Sydney): I recently spoke to a train engineer who explained that in terms of time, these double-deckers are relatively inefficient compared to other train systems in. Not because of their travel speed between stations, but because the greatest loss in efficiency in train schedules is during onboarding and offboarding. As you can imagine, it takes longer for people to enter or exit the train’s different floors. Overall the time this adds might be a few seconds per station, but those seconds accumulate over a train’s journey. Having said all that, I don’t find Sydney’s train system particularly ineffective, but it’s an interesting tidbit.

The basic crux is comparing Sydney and Melbourne suburban trains - it's 8 car double deck with 2 doors per car per side versus 6 car single deck with 3 doors per car per side. So 1200 passengers through 16 doors versus 900 passengers through 18 doors. Also hub and spoke versus disjointed overlapping terminus networking.

The parents drive out any potential threats from their territory because their young actually leave the nest a couple of weeks before they can fly, during which time they have to survive on the ground until their tail feathers develop enough for them to control their flight. During that time the parents will continue to guard and feed them if necessary. The parents can distinguish between those they trust and others and it's a privilege to earn that trust.

It's been a cool wet summer. If you want to research El Niño and La Niña this affects the weather here from 1-8 years. Right now we are in La Niña which causes more rain and cooler temperatures, also causes flooding. Back when we had those major bush fires shown across the world we were in El Niño. It's to do with trade winds and changing ocean surface currents.

Melbourne gets very hot. In 2009 Melbourne reached consecutively 43, 44 and 45 in late Jan. I remember sitting in my living room in the dark, mid 30s at midnight, with the lamp off as it produced too much heat, and a useless pedestal fan. It was just so hot. Our infrastructure buckled. Literally train lines warped. Then a week later it was 46. Black Saturday and the bushfires that killed 173 people and destroyed countless hectares of bush. I remember flying back from Sydney a week or two after and descending over Marysville and looking out west towards Kinglake. It was a sea of black and brown. The whole plane was dead quiet and just staring out the windows. We’ve had hotter since - it got to 48 at Avalon Airport since then - but those two weeks have been the most horrible that I’ve experirnced.

We have a great banana industry in Australia, mostly in Qld but also in northern NSW. We even have The Big Banana at Coffs Harbour (check it out). Delicious too. Don't know about the gum patrol, but I imagine they pick up chewing gum that horrible people spit out, so that it doesn't get caught on patrons' shoes. They also have a dog patrol there. The dogs chase the seagulls away so that diners can eat in peace. Magpies are large black and white birds that we love, however, for about 6 weeks every spring SOME can become pretty aggressive in protecting their young, and they will swoop people. There have been some nasty incidents because they have incredibly sharp beaks. But it's for a very short space of time.

It's the European Magpie that is attracted to shiny things, although that seems to be disputed. The Australian Magpie, apart from being a black and white bird (why it was given it's name by the early settlers), isn't closely related to overseas Magpies. Australian Magpies are quite intelligent though, and may "steal" or play with objects they find.
@ianwalker5842

Hi Pokhraj. You may not realise that the Australian "magpie" is not actually related to the British/European magpie. I live in Australia but was born in England and know that those smaller magpies are indeed attracted to shiny and colourful things. The superstition about them rings a faint bell too. Anyway, now you know that Australian Magpies are not the same - a different species, much bigger for a start. They were only named magpies because their black and white markings reminded the early colonists of the real magpies back home. Ours are closely related to the Butcher Bird. They're only dangerous in mating season. Very friendly and intelligent otherwise, and will always remember your face if you feed or are kind to them. Warm greetings from Melbourne.

Australia does in fact grow their own bananas. There is a place called Coffs Harbour in NSW where they grow bananas and out the front is THE BIG BANANA. A huge banana right at the entrance and a Big Banana Fun park. But the majority of the bananas are grown in Queensland. The Gaytime ice cream has been around in Australia for a lot of years. Long before anyone used the term "Gay" for gays. There is a thing right now though which I find really pathetic. There is a cheese in Australia that was named after the founder or the producer of the cheese and it named "Coon" which of course is not a good word for a black person. They are having to rename the cheese even though it's been around since Adam was a boy. I despair of all this political correctness. People should stop being so sensitive about stupid things. Some of these things shown are pretty cool but there are things that you would find elsewhere as well as you said. Summer has been pathetic up till now. Very cool. Today it was 14 degrees Celcius a week out from Christmas. The fault of La Nina I'm guessing.

I can't stop looking at the wave rock in Western Australia! So beautiful! Joel, I have been swooped upon and had my head pecked at twice by a magpie. Two different occasions, two different birds. Not the most fun of experiences. That was a long time ago now and it happened while playing a game of golf. But magpies have a satisfying whistle, at least for me as a musician. It sounds a little like a flute and it is carolling. But ever since I was swooped upon, whenever I see a magpie I recoil a little. Fun fact though, as far as superstitions go, apparently if you see two magpies together, it means good luck. Bananas! They're the best. A personal conception of my own to tempt the taste buds. Wrap a hot buttered crumpet around a banana and go for it! I call it the Crumpana! Naturally!
