Similar thing happened to me in Paris - I got chatting to some guy I’d asked directions from. (My French is hit and miss). As an Australian, I am slightly embarrassed that we have claimed some New Zealand bands & artists as Aussies. Dragon is a Kiwi band as was Split Enz. As Split Enz morphed in Crowded House it became an ANZAC band with a mixture of Kiwis & Aussies. Both Australia & New Zealand punch above their weight in both music & acting given our small populations.

What he doesn’t know and I think many others also may not know is that our singing voice in English doesn’t usually give away our accent. It only becomes recognisable when we speak. This doesn’t always happen when a foreigner sings in English, e.g. a native French speaker. Colin Hay definitely loses his Scottish accent when he’s singing.

Split Enz was a New Zealand Band. The song "I Got You" was sung by Tim Finn's brother Neil Finn, Tim Finn, being an original member of the band. Crowded House's lead singer is Neil Finn. There could be more New Zealand bands in there as well but we Australian's are happy to claim them anyway. Man how young are you? The movie Grease starred John Travolta and... Olivia Newton-John. Dave Dobbyn, definitely KIwi as well and that song was the theme song for the movie "Footrot Flats" from the comic books. Watch it if you can and have a look at those comic books. That will help you understand Australian and Kiwi humour better. The original singer for AC/DC was Bon Scott, who was born in Scotland. Worth looking them up when he was the front man, died young unfortunately.

Jason and Kylie both started out as soap opera stars and then moved to England. Jason became a musical theatre West End performer and Kylie became very popular as a singer, she is now known worldwide and is still putting out new material. Her sister, Danni, also went to England and was very successful there. I don't know who compiled this list but Dragon and Crowded House/Split Enz are from New Zealand. Also Jason Donovan and Rick Springfield didn't have a huge number of hits in Australia, there are so many other performers who were better and more successful. Can't believe you had never heard of Olivia Newton John, she was big here, the UK and the US. She starred in Xanadu with Gene Kelly and she was Sandy in Grease.

Every week in the 80s the top 40 was full of great Aussie bands - many of them still iconic to this day. When new songs were released, we all knew who the band was before we knew the title. They all had a unique sound, real talent (ok, questionable on actors turned pop stars) and no auto-tune. You could read the top 40 list and instantly know 90% of the songs. In recent times (the last 2 decades) there’s barely an Aussie in the top 10, let alone top 40, and most people wouldn’t have a clue about 70% of the songs in the top 10. Thank god for small independent labels pumping out real talent, because all the big labels are simply doing manufactured pop tart rubbish that all follow the same terrible recipe.

Crazy facts: AC/DC used to play the Sunday afternoon session at my local pub [Leederville Hotel] in Perth, Western Australia. The music was just as iconic then as it is now; the session was always packed. The 'Highway to Hell' song is about a stretch of the Canning Highway between one pub they played at [the Raffles Hotel, Applecross] and another pub in Fremantle. They would drive from one to the other between gigs and usually 'downing a few' beers... hence, highway to hell.

We waited, and waited, and finally, out he came, and the entire carpark erupted with cheers, whistles and applause. I never knew Joe Dolce could be counted as Australian. He played an Italian in a British sitcom called 'Mind Your Language ' about a class of adults learning English as a second language. Shaddap Your Face famously kept Vienna by Ultravox off the number one spot in the British Top Ten.

Have you googled the lyrics of Land Down Under? Split Enz were from New Zealand, so they can be called 'Down Under', as some of us call NZ the seventh state (as a joke). Rick Springfield is an Aussie/US singer/actor. ONJ - 'Grease', Koala Blue was one of her brands. Jason Donovan was also 'Joseph' in ALW's Joseph & The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, and Jason & Kyle were in the early days of Neighbours. The Locomotion was a big hit in 1962 by Little Evie.

Ryan, Kylie Monogue is still huge in the UK and has been a big hit artist for the last 30plus years. If the USA weren't so preoccupied in promoting only their own artists, they would discover a wealth of good music from alot of other countries around the world. The internet thankfully, has opened the world to alot of ignorant Americans on lots of topics.
