Fun fact: I used to sell self adhesive vinyl to the sign trade. A popular product we sold was a clear application tape from 3M. This suddenly became unavailable, and we were told it had been withdrawn from the market. Why? because the basic polymer, without the adhesive, was what they were going to use for the new banknotes! Couldn't make it 'easy' for forgers, haha. though it still wouldn't be easy to copy these notes.

The reason they skipped the $20 note is because there were some issues with fake $50 notes going around, so it was considered a higher priority to replace the $50 note first. Fun fact though, there is a spelling error in the micro text on some of the new $50 notes, but unlike stamps don’t expect them to have any collector value as they printed millions of them before the error was discovered! Since that video was created, the $20 and $100 notes have also been replaced, and gradually all of the old style notes are being removed from circulation. Many years ago a sample polymer banknote was created for the US, with the idea of selling the printing technology to the US. Unfortunately those in power at the time didn’t think that Americans would take to the new notes, so the US never pursued the idea further. Finally, despite her death a few months ago, there are no plans at this stage to replace the Queen on the $5 note. Unlike coins, the $5 note is not required to carry the effigy of the reigning monarch, so does not need to be updated. Any future redesign will likely remove the late monarch, but it’s unlikely to be the King who replaces her.

I’m Australian. My last trip to USA I had withdrawn US currently from ATM there. I went to a fast food place and presented US$50 because I didn’t have smaller cash and I remember the cashier said to me ‘I haven’t got time for this!’ She then swabbed my USA currency with a pen and yelled for a manager. It was embarrassing! In Australia if I handed a $50 note anywhere (and given our multiple design changes) they would accept it. What the F**K is up with USA!

Interesting fact about the Aussie notes - in the first polymer set, each of the notes were specifically designed to be different lengths to assist people with vision problems. As part of supporting the blind and visually impaired, they would have plastic templates in their wallets with the note denominations written on them in braille so that when they would be given change they could compare the change given to the templates in their wallet to ensure that they were given the correct notes back. The need for this has been removed by the physical indentations put into the actual notes themselves, so the continual support of those that are hard of sight continues. The size difference is still a consistent throw back to the previous series of polymers as well.

One of the most confusing things having lived in the US was the similarity of all the bank notes. To my Aussie eyes they were all not only the same visually but the same size as well. Our notes are different in size. It must be a nightmare for the blind. I also think the fact that cotton is used in the production of US notes is a shame considering the social history of cotton production and the current feeling in terms of the suck on resources m.

@jenb658
@jenb658 Жыл бұрын
@thomaslawrence2488 Not indented to offend. Just the association that cotton production has, historically had with the culture in the US means everyone in the world recognises the huge amount of cotton production that was taking place in US during the 19th century at the same time, and in the same place, that people were being exploited for their labour. It doesn’t take much of a stretch to see that cotton, being an almost free commodity during that time, would be used in American currency. Even now it is a 75% cotton, 25% linen blend. It lasts about 2 years in circulation and is fat more difficult to recycle than polymer bank notes (which also last for 3-8 years). Sometimes history is multi faceted and complex.

The Hologram security feature (Cookie the crim) on the $10 Note cost a million dollars in research at CSIRO and failed by wearing off very quickly in circulation. The transparent polymer window it sat on turned out to be the security feature because transparent plastic could not be photocopied- and it didn't cost with extra research.

Even I learnt something from this video. I moved to Australia in 1990 and I honestly thought that the $5 was our first polymer note, released in the early 90s, rather than the $10 in the late 80s. I don't remember that initial $10 note, to be perfectly honest. Bicentennial $10.00 Note was our first. Funny story I had moved home as an Adult for a month. I was paid monthly so used to withdraw $2,000 in 1 hit so I paid bills until this ran out. I came home in a rush to shower & change leaving my dirty business shirt on my bed. Inside was $2,000 in $50.00 notes (thankfully polymer). Stepping out of the shower & to my room I dressed then heard my parents laughing. My mother had grabbed my dirty clothes forgetting I did them but the money fell from my pocket. Outside I see $50.00 notes pegged to the clothesline. I grabbed them & took them inside to explain as I paid my rent.

If you have an Australian note in front of you, try this: Roll it into a cylinder lengthwise (like a cigar shape). The VERY FINE lines and colours line up perfectly. Unroll, it, flip it over, and do it again for the other side. The fine lines and colour changes again match up perfectly. Unroll it, and this time roll it so that the shorter sides match up with each other - you got it, they line up perfectly, and will also line up if you turn it over and match the two ends again. Another anti-counterfeiting device. Australia pioneered this technology. Very impressive.

The next Australian bank note issuance will include "fragrance technology" to promote Australia and further assist the blind. Each note of a different value will be imprinted with the essence of a native flower, plant, or animal (it is rumoured that "gumtree" and "koala" will be among them). With new techniques and technologies, these essences can be implanted into the note for its entire lifespan of use (an estimated shelf life of 56 to 63 years) I am anticipating this new "smellnote" technology.

0.67 AUD to the USD means you get one AUD to 67¢ USD, so you get 1/3 extra for your dollar. When we go overseas, the reverse happens to we need to earn another 1/3 to buy one USD. 😳

The USA has been looking at this technology for decades but refuses to pay a licensing fee that EVERY OTHER COUNTRY pays to Australia for the usage of the technology, that we keep improving on over and over. Therefore they will not use it no matter how many problems the current paper/cotten notes cause consumers, merchants, and banks. Arrogance at its finest

If you are coming here, note that even though exchange rate is $1 aud for $0.67 usd, everything costs more correspondingly or greater. So an item in the US cost us$5, expect same item in Australia to cost au$10.

Yeah, Australia is home to a great many innovations. Unfortunately, the US seems to have fallen into a rut that is common for most ascendant civilizations immediately prior to their decline. Stuck looking backwards at their "glory days" instead of thinking how things can be done better. MAGA is a perfect example of this, what was instead of what could be. edit. Colours make using it super easy, don't need to look at numbers you just need the pink one and a yellow one allows you to keep operating on power save mode which is nice.

One problem with polymer notes - static cling. They have a nasty habit of 'sticking' together, making it easier to accidentally pull more than a single note out of a till.

mj the best things about our aussie money , is it looks like money , but more importantly it smells like money, a faint perfume. hell my son gave me two fresh 100 buck notes for chrissy amongst other stuff. remember , i doo a bunch of notes in your pocket , forget to take them out, put em in the washing machine ...........oops gone. now the new aussies notes , wash em no probs. plastic , well polymer , still plastic. having a full set of our beautiful notes in ur wallet is a joy to behold. if u plan to come here , u need a whole lot of cash. air fares, hotel bills , train taxis national parks tourists attractions , food , car hire , guides, in 6 months well over a 100 gran, in ur money.. this was the 'lucky country' but, alas, not any more.

It's worth noting that forgery is still an issue with Australian currency, in spite of all these measures. Part of the challenge is education; you need to know what to look for to tell that a note is forged. You can find examples that have been reported online from the last few years. The clear window is one of the usual failed features, since replicating all of the effects of that window is not easy. The colour and texture of the note can often be a strong indicator, but that relies on you knowing what the correct colour and texture should be. There have been some strong attempts at forging our back notes, which is partly what led to the recent refresh of their design. I don't deal in cash much these days, so even I haven't seen all of the new designs yet. I have to mention that our new $20 note is a very distinct salmon colour. Almost offensively salmon.

Fun fact, while there's no need to remove Aussie notes from your pockets before putting through the wash or going swimming, they can be shrunk in an oven or with an iron. Can make little miniature souvenir notes if you want to :)

When I was in the US it was a pain in the backside every note is the same size and crappy colour. So you have to rifle through your wallet trying to find the closest denomination note. Australian notes are different colours for the denominations so even drunk you can get the right note first time. The notes are different sizes so that blind people can also tell the notes denomination. The new ones now have braille as well.
@soils1111
@soils1111 Жыл бұрын
As well as the braille feature to help sight impaired people use the notes, and of course the colour difference for each denomination, which a majority of countries use, each denomination is a different size, again helping with easier identification

I hated in America when you go to pay for something you have to dig thru your wallet to find the right note, in aus you can just grab the right color in a glance.

Note Printing Australia makes the polymer banknotes for several countries - including Canada. The only country where the polymer banknotes made in Australia failed as far as I'm aware is Nepal, where people have a practice of burning banknotes as offerings to idols. Apparently the polymer notes don't burn well and just turn into a sticky, smelly mass.

The notes are different sizes too you you can tell what note your grabbing without looking at it, you just need to feel the size of the note, and maybe feel the braille mark if you want to be certain.
