We generally don't really talk about politics, or even refer to anything political unless there is an election coming up. And even then, nobody really cares what other people's political views are. It is compulsory to vote but you just look at it as ticking a box or two while you attend a local venue where they are often selling sausages on bread (known as a sausage sizzle), homemade cakes, jams and fresh produce. At least that is what it is like in my area.

That bit with the fire-fighter was during the 2019 bushfires that ravaged most of our country. It seemed like everything was on fire, I didn't see the sun for like a month, the sky was pertpetually covered in cloud and smoke. Where was our then illustrious Prime Minister Scott Morrison at the time? In Hawaii. On holiday. He had to head straight back because the anger was so intense, he got chased out of more than a few towns he tried playing politics in. That fire-fighters breakdown was pretty famous, he and many others were working around the clock, losing a house was heartbreaking for them because that was a family home they couldn't save. That guy had already lost 3 by that point if I remember correctly. I say all this to get this point across: we HATE our politicians and our government and we're not afraid to be vocal about it.

There were a few massacres before the Port Arthur massacre, but when that one occurred, the government offered a buy back programme and the Australian people who owned guns handed them in, there was no raiding people’s houses looking for guns or anything. There was also a gun amnesty I remember where people could hand guns into the police station no questions asked. New regulations regarding buying a gun came into effect making it harder to buy a gun. There were protests about how the stricter regulations would stop people’s rights,but Australia doesn’t have a bill of rights like America. I do have a couple of things to that list. The Inhumane way bosses etc, the wages are ridiculously low and you have to work too hard and too long. Especially in the Food Service Industry, our minimum wage is at least twice yours. Our bosses are understanding and behave like human beings. If you even try turning up to work sick they'll send you back home 🏡. They won't make you feel guilty or demand a long explanation of why you can't come in. It's just plain ridiculous to be afraid to get sick or have an accident because you could wind up having to pay a huge bill. It's a no win situation with the crazy amounts of Sugar they put in most of your food. Then when it gives you Diabetes they'll charge you $300 for insulin. Aussie food in general is much higher quality. We use Cane Sugar in smaller quantities, most of us hadn't ever heard about Corn Syrup until KZbin. We tend to use natural colours and flavours in our food. Companies have to limit their use of Chemical Additives, they wouldn't dare use Chemical Fillers. They'd go out of business. I'm starting another comment.

Bang on! All so true! As Aussies we don’t really understand what it’s like to live with that level of racism, we have racism here, like everywhere, but we don’t really understand that degree of it, so the riots did seem ridiculous to most Aussies. I’m sure it was more understandable to Americans, but not the way we do business or deal with issues so much here. When people try to riot here most Aussies hate them. There are smarter and more effective ways of dealing with things than burning the country down.

Also a lot of Independents in Australian parliament at the moment meaning there are a lot of politicians who are not aligned to a political party at all

Aussie here. Firstly yes we do kind of speak like that, his accent is a little bit thicker then normal but not by alot. Something to remember regarding the riot point is that most australians actually have a pretty good grasp of what happens in america. Our news is filled with alot from america, our social media threads are usually always full of americans. Like we even get educated on american history, basic laws, your consistution and more. On top of that going back to what isaac said about movies, is that most of our entertainment is from america. So we are shown so much of america while not even being a citizen or lived there. So you could sit there for an hour and explain your point on the riots. I guarantee a good 50-65% of australians would be able to rebuttle it and/or understand the point. Most of us have a pretty good grasp of it the same as isaac butterfield. Good old news media reporting from america.

It was unfortunate timing in terms of the presidency and pandemics etc… Fortunately I found like-minded people and community. I’m not sure which state you’re from but I am guessing mid-west to eastern? My advice to you is to save your pennies and come on a tourist or study visa and check us out. You seem young and can apply for a work visa up until 30yrs. It’s much harder after that. In any case, thanks for the entertainment. It’s interesting to see how Aussies are perceived by those that have never been here.

Isaac Butterfield is a stand-up comedian and his shtick is to be a caricature of Australian men. You probably know a lot of Australian celebrities that you didn't know were Australian. Thor, Wolverine, Harley Quinn, Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson, Russel Crowe, AC~DC, Bee-Gees, and about a hundred more. They usually have to speak with an American accent in movies to be properly understood there. In Australia you might see them at a coffee shop and it would be very unusual for someone to even ask them for a selfie. NOTE: Some famous Aussie actors were born in New Zealand or England but migrated at a young age to Australia and identify as Australian. New Zealand was almost a State of Australia but declined at the last minute but New Zealand is very closely tied to Australia. (closer than Canada & USA)

It was mainly unpopular within rural Nationals voters. One reason why I had respected Tim Fischer, then Deputy PM and leader of The Nationals, for being in support for gun control despite backlash from a lot of The Nationals rank-and-file members.
@ironside2102 жыл бұрын
Really unpopular with a small minority. The bottom line of gun control in Oz is :- 1. If you can demonstrate that you need a gun, you can get a gun. 2. You can't have one if you are not mentally stable, a criminal etc. 3. You have to prove that you can use it and store it safely. 4. You can only have one that is suitable for your purpose. There is obviously more to it, but that is the nuts and bolts of it. I observe that the group of people most vehement in their opposition at the time (farmers and other rural workers) qualified and have guns. OK they can't have bazookas and machine guns, but they have weapons that suit their purpose.
@OldFellaDave2 жыл бұрын
The real issue is - we never really had a gun culture. Like ever. Sure guns were available and not that hard to get. But it just wasn't a thing around us. For people out bush, sure, it was a practical tool they were raised with for obvious reasons. But in the cities, while we had gun clubs and rifle ranges, it was a minority that owned and used them. So 'giving them up' wasn't really a big thing for about 90% of Aussies. The people who had guns back then - still have guns now. Just not a lot of AR-15 derivatives ... but even back then teh semi-autos were mostly SKS's, and the odd surplus SLR, and then all you regular bolt action hunting rifles, old .303s, shotguns etc People took the Gun Buy Back and hand In programs as an opportunity to cleanly get rid of a few guns that weren't exactly legal, no questions asked ;)

Both major parties are on the nose in Australia and independents are attracting a lot of votes. But politics here is far less toxic than in the US. Voting is always on a Saturday so everyone can get to the polls, although there is early voting Last weekend there was a state election here in Victoria, and I wandered over to the polling booth and the volunteers from the various parties or independent candidates were amiably chatting to each other while handing out 'How to Vote ' cards. With preferential or ranked choice voting you have to number each candidate in order of preference for your vote to count. There were about ten candidates in my electorate. How to vote cards advise how the parties or independents would like you to allocate tour preferences. Tou don't have to follow the advice. I didn't. You don't have to stand in line for hours, even though voting is compulsory. Well not really. It is compulsory to turn up, have your name marked off, be handed a ballot paper and stick it the box. You don't have to go to the booth and put a mark on it. Or you can write "You can all get f*****d. We still use pencil and paper so there is a paper trail if anyone wants to complain. And the secret ballot started in Australia. It was called the Australian ballot in the US. When the result became clear on Saturday night, the leader of the opposition conceded that the government had been returned. No we wuz robbed BS.
