In France and other European Countries they have the FREEDOM of EXPRESSION which is a little different from the US freedom of speech. Sure but expression and speech are just terms that may mean the same by law or not. I mean, saying “expression” and not “speech” does not automatically implies what you are allowed to express or say. That is to the letter of the law on each country. So indeed in that regard US it is more free. If that is good or not that is another question altogether. The use of a different term (although semantically with little difference if any) it was to distinguish a law that it wasn’t going to be as lax or free if you want as the US one already was imo.

My country has roughly a fourth of the US population. Leave out the World Wars (since there was no war in the US this year) and there were less kids shot in the entire history of my country than in this year alone in the US. Being shot is one of the leading (some years it's even number 1 on the list) causes of death of minors in the US!

In France, and mostly across Europe (I guess), "personal freedom ends where someone else’s begins." If what you do or say might harm someone, whether physically or psychologically, then you’re not free to do it. For example, you can’t mow your lawn at 9 PM. Your neighbors might be eating or sleeping, so just don’t. If you do make loud noises and someone calls the police, you can get fined. At some point, even though America argues that they have absolute freedom, you can still be sued for racism or defamation. So, are you really free even by your own terms? The main difference is that in Europe, we’re more preventive. We go to court less often because we have more safety laws designed to stop those situations from happening in the first place. That’s why American politicians often say Europe has no freedom of speech. And it’s true-in a way. If you cross the line, we don’t wait for someone to actually get hurt before taking action. We’ll kick your nuts preemptively. :D It’s just a tiny cultural difference, but it has big impacts. Many things you hear in America would cause a huge scandal if said here. Of course, and to conclude, we all got our shady stuff, France is now in some troubles having also many lies spread from far right and we can assume they'll end up at some point winning presidency. Here in Portugal it's rather similar to France. This week a far right activist was convicted to 2 years and 10 months of prision for using the X social network to encourage the “forced prostitution” of left-wing party activists. Even though he argued in court that it was a “humorous comment” that didn't prevent him of being convicted. We can speak freely but we can't offend or threat anyone. As some have stated, the ideia behing the law is that our freedom ends when other peoples' freadoms begins or, in other words, freedom of expression isn't the supreme and ultimate constitutional right, it can be restricted in the event of a collision with other fundamental rights and constitutionally protected public interests.

That's arguably still based on an inability to read statistics. People even go on vacation to Mexico (including me. It was lovely. Mindblowing, right?) without being scared of getting shot, even though the murder and gun violence rates are even higher than in the US. Why? Because we understand that a) even if you accepted this risk as applicable to yourself (see point b), it would barely increase the total risk of getting harmed by all causes and b) all but a small fraction of these incidences happen either within crime/gang circles or as family drama, both of which you will most likely be excluded from as a tourist. You are, in short, basing your assessment of the world on anecdotes and isolated images presented to you with a purpose, and then calling any opposing view "insane." I'll be honest, that's not a great look.

I’ve been to the US a dozen times and as a woman have never felt unsafe. Never seen anything remotely violent or aggressive. I even walked alone at night in NYC a couple of years ago and was perfectly fine. Granted, this wouldn’t be the case in every neighborhood, but it’s not like trouble is lurking around every corner everywhere. Just because the crime rate is higher doesn’t mean you will be exposed to it when visiting for a short time. By the same measure you could call people insane for flying on an airplane or driving a car.

I visit my sister in Texas. Her neighbour was shooting his gun in a residential neighbourhood in his backyard. Cops did nothing. On the way to Arkansas we drove by a shooting scene in a small town. And drove by a cop shooting in Arkansas. My visit was 3 weeks. When I go to US, I can never totally relax with all these guns around, out in the open.

The thing about free speech in Europe is that you are allowed to express yourself, as long as you do so without hate speech and discrimination. But if I want to call someone I dislike a fascist or worse, I am free to do so. I could probably say that to a police officer without any repercussions too, but that small extra bit of freedom to hate speech is basically the only difference between freedom of speech in the US and Europe.

One thing that astonishes me about the US, is that there is no sense of shared values common in other countries. Each State seems to be different from the next. Australia manages shared values, despite its size and different states we are communally the same. The UK is made up of 3 separate countries, again shared values. Europe falls into a similar category. I wish it was the same for the US, but it seems to foster such extremism in all areas, this is because it's about MY rights above communal rights. The point is not only gun violence. It's abusive police that has no training. React to the videos were the stop a German or when they stop Canadians and they are bamboozled and say they need an US driver's license. For me it was driving on the highway/interstate. I've been in NC a long time and drove thousands of miles and almost each ride our car felt unsafe, other drivers were absolutely unaware of their surroundings, blown tires every few miles. Police just drove by and didn't even clear those hazards. Trucks that we drove by didn't properly secure their load. There was even a mattress on the highway. Some close calls of other drivers changing Lanes blindly and more. The airport interview is the worst. In no country I traveled to (I've been in over 30 countries) I was interviewed by the flight personal as if I was a t*rrorist. The guy next to me was all good. He just said he's invited to an Afghan wedding in the States and thrads called him back for a "more thorough talk". The amount of guns in this country is crazy. We've met so many hikers in the Smoky's carrying guns because of the black bears. It was not a single one. We met a family and except for the pre-teen kid, everyone carried a gun. That's literally overkill.

That old guy had no clue what he was protesting, freedom of speech doesn't mean you can insult put down another human being reguards race colour or religion. Circumcision could be a religious thing also needed for health reasons.

Insults (including racist insults) are not a violation free speech law in the US. Obviously, if you harassed someone with insults you could be arrested for harassment. Almost all speech is permitted except *imminent threats of violence.*

I understand it´s kinda scary to visit the states. Just all these thoughts like what happens if you´ve an accident? will you get broke cause the costs? There are (statistics) 120 rifles per 100 people. IN the UK as example 1 rifel per 17 people. So will i get shot by any random angry guy? The last years who showed how "nice" guests are welcome like that woman in the NY subway yelling at German tourists cause they speak German or whenever i hear a Karen tell someone to go where they come from. Theweird things you got in your food which are poison and forbidden in many other places. There are so many things that might make someone choose an other deestination for vaccation. I´m not up to offend. Just being honest why i wouldn´t like to visit the States.

Don’t get me wrong, I consider myself a gun control advocate and it is a problem but I’ve still never seen a gun outside a place like a shooting range. Protests in London that happen often are way more challenging to watch. It shouldn’t be entertaining to see protesters. But recent events in the UK, some very close to me in the north east England make me feel sick. Murder is not an over-statement. We don’t have guns but our protests often result in conflict, sometimes not a safe outcome.

What I have noticed a lot about Americans is that you often talk at the same time and over each other, I have witnessed it often on your live morning tv shows. It is who shouts the loudest who wins. This, as an Aussie, is viewed as a very aggressive way of being. Everybody likes to be heard. Manners are, if someone else is speaking wait for them to finish, then you talk. I think you guys need to take a chill pill and learn to relax. You seem very combative. I think the worse thing you do is give your presidents the title for the rest of their lives. They are not gods they are EX highly paid public servants and nothing more. I heard someone critisicise our "tall poppy" syndrome. We have it to keep everyone real and let everyone knownyou are no better than us or the guy who enpties uour rubbish,byou are just another Australian and don't forget it
