Life of Brian wasn't an attack on Christianity, but an example of the silliness of delusion and willingness of many people to follow without using critical thinking. The film was advertised in Sweden as being so funny, it was banned in Norway.
@avaggdu1
@avaggdu1 Жыл бұрын
Monty Python knew exactly what they were doing, but they had a very valid point that it wasn't directly ridiculing Christianity - no Biblical figures were harmed in the production of the film. It was a satire, as you say, of people desperate to follow something for no reason. Palin & Cleese's debate with Malcolm Muggeridge and the Bishop of Southwark on Friday Night, Saturday Morning is definitely worth watching, particularly as it shows that Muggeridge and Bishop Mervyn Stockwood were taking offence to a film they hadn't actually watched, being outraged for the sake of being outraged. Christianity did not have a monopoly on crucifixion and Brian was never portrayed as Jesus - in fact it was made clear the character was definitively "not the Messiah!" and spent the whole film trying in vain to tell people he wasn't.

I think it's weird to say Life of Brian is not an attack on Christianity. They have a scene obviously depicting Jesus speaking from a mound, so I think it's false that there's no biblical figures in the movie. They can't hear him speak and follow Brian instead. If this isn't an attack on the gullibility of the supplicants of a church, the false confidence and randomness in religious claims and the meaningless views of religious cults, I don't know what is. The whole point is to ridicule religion, and Christianity in particular.

In the early 1980s I was working in South Africa. The Life of Brian was banned there. But I was able to rent a copy from the local Video Shop. The film was very much under the counter and the shop keeper made me promise never to tell anyone before handing the film over in a plain box. At work the next day I began to hum the song ‘Always look on the bright side’ in the office. Very soon everyone in the office was singing along! Seems that everyone including the religious had seen the ‘banned’ film.

The three Wise Men mistakenly come to the wrong manger, with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrhh, and are immediately scolded by Brian's mother; "A BALM?! 24:11 24:11 BROUGHT MY BABY A BALM!?!" I worked in a cinema in Lodon in 1979 and we had Life of Brian for quite a few weeks, and by the end of its run most of our staff, ushers, bouncers, projectionists and girls behind the sweets counter had most of the script by memory - i can't speak for my coworkers but i still retain a large portion of those funny bits 45 years later.

The name is in full - "Monty Pythons Flying Circus". The sketch preceding the Lumberjack sketch is called the 'Spam' sketch by aficionados, and it is reportedly where the term 'spam' as in excess emails came from, as the early computer pioneers were Monty Python fans - you should watch it. The two sketches 'Spam' and 'Lumberjack' are really merged surreally into one. Yes, the Dead Parrot is number 1 of Mont Python's sketches, but you really need to see the whole sketch and where it leads to, as Monty Python often linked sketches together, another of their brilliant innovations. In many people's minds though the best ever British comedy sketch is the Two Ronnies in the '4 Candle' sketch, you need to see the whole thing though.

The Life of Brian is fabulous, easily up there with Blazing Saddles, Airplane and The Naked Gun as one of the best film comedies of all time. There is so much going on, from joining one of the many groups trying to get free from Roman rule, the transexual declaration, to the Stoning scene, painting protest slogans on the amphitheatre walls, the Roman Governors speech impediment, the crucifixion and the Bright Side of Life itself. Absolute classic. Ask any Brit over a certain age if Brian is the Messiah and you are guaranteed to get "He's not the Messiah, he's a naughty boy".

I love British comedy because, (as you said) the actors are so committed to the bit. It's always straight faced. When you think about comedy the best acts that stand the test of time are the ones that act completely serious, despite the absurd things happening around them. Examples include Monty Python of course, Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun series and Airplane!, Abbot and Costello, The Three Stooges, anything by Mel Brooks, etc. Playing through an absolutely absurd idea, completely straight, Is somehow a lot funnier than an actor or character being goofy. For example, I love them both, But Jim Carrey gets beat by Leslie Nielsen every time. Jim Carrey leans into the ridiculous and it's hilarious but... Leslie Nielsen Ignores the silliness and stupidity and performs as a normal person, even though the situation is completely ridiculous which makes it so much more funny to watch. I hope that made even a little bit of sense.

Try finding a clip where Michael Palin and John Cleese are on a panel with two clerics, discussing "Life of Brian". The clerics were totally up in arms, one even going so far as to call the movie "blasphemous". Cleese and Palin had a very hard time not visibly rolling their eyes. (Btw, my favorite scene is where Brian, as a member of a Jewish resistance group, is writing graffiti in Latin on a wall in Jerusalem -- "Romans, Go Home". He's caught by a Roman soldier and is quaking in his sandals, but all the soldier does is berate him for getting the grammar wrong ... and makes him write the sentence correctly 100 times. Absolutely classic!) Oh, and do yourself a favor and watch the whole movie (if you can laugh a little at religion). You won't regret it, promise! :-)

The "Fish Slapping Dance" is about 30 seconds long and my favourite after the Argument sketch. I purchased the complete scripts of the "Holy Grail" film. All the members contributed several sketches to be included in the film. One that wasn't chosen was thus... King Arthur and his knights from Camelot were gathered on a windswept moor and King Arthur in a 3 minute speech told his knights that they had this quest from God to find the "Holy Grail". He then sent his Knights out to all directions of the globe on this quest. After about 10 yards, one of his knights shouts, " Found it"! So they all go home again. - Brilliant.

Upper class twit is my favourite of theirs but soooo many of their sketches are gold. I also love Rowan Atkins Black Adder especially the 2nd season with Queen Elizabeth and a little bit of fry and Laurie especially the bar scene where Laurie complaining about his ex wife and fry as bartender keeps offering him different dishes.

The parrot sketch probably works so well in the UK because of the long history of verbal comedy, which, combined with lot of sly innuendo, was already to be heard in Shakespeare's comedies, although, admittedly, these sometimes need a glossary to interpret the contemporary references and slang words. This anarchic comedy seems to be the obverse side of the "keep calm and carry on side" of the British temperament. The British and Irish, with their huge vocabulary, do on the whole take a delight in elaborate banter, punning and flights of verbal fancy. The whole premise of the parrot sketch is John Cleese's finding more and more words to describe its moribund condition, in the face of Michael Palin's decision to ignore it. In addition, the Python's use any number of exaggerated and distorted British dialects which turns the silliness up a few more notches.😂

Yup. I think that's really the root of British comedy; depth and complexity. American humor, at least modern American humor, revels in and relies on shallowness and simplicity. People are obsessed with the mentality of "it's not that deep". They don't want to put effort into understanding _anything,_ least of all their recreation and entertainment. By contrast, British humor dives in and just sees how deep they can dive. It's a competition to see how many people they can lose on the way. It's all about applying their understanding of linguistics and wordplay in such a way that it filters the people who get the joke from those who don't. And Monty Python are certainly a bunch of cunning linguists.

The film Life of Brian caused great controversy at the time it was released, from people who hadn't seen it. It is now regarded as the funniest film ever made. My friend can quote every line from it.

Somehow the controversy was in itself very Pythonesque, late night religious shows with Bishops and Malcom Muggeridge condemning it.

PYTHON is pronounced PY THUN ,as in GUN, not PY THON as in GONE. Listen to how the narrator says it. " He's NOT the Messiah...he's a very naughty boy". Classic Life of Brian quote. Connie Booth was John Cleese's wife. They went on to star in another classic British comedy, FAWLTY TOWERS where he does his silly walk in an episode called THE GERMANS. " You're mother was a hamster, and your father smelled of elderberries" . Classic HOLY GRAIL quote. When something dies, I still say, " this is an ex....". You have to watch the sketches in their entirety to get the joke. Only parts of them were shown here.

Tyler, growing up in the 70's in Canada, we watched Monty Python 's Flying Circus every Saturday afternoon on the CBC. My children grew up in the late 90's early 2000's and they too are very well versed in Monty Python. So happy that you have discovered them. Merry Christmas to you and your family from Montreal!

There is a tradition in British comedy of making parody songs one of my favourites was “the chicken song” by spitting image which parodies summer holiday songs which have actions. Or “no more Christmas singles” which was a xmas song about banning xmas pop songs.

One thing I have never seen mentioned is that when these were first broadcast, they would often have false endings. The closing credits and music would start to play, people would go to switch off or change channels, but it would start up again. and sometimes it would not and a sign would come up saying , "Bugger off" ! I did read that they also wanted to do an entire episode where the volume of the sound would be slowly turned down during the episode so that the viewers would have to keep turning up the volume. Near the end of the show, full volume would be restored! The BBC nixed this idea , fearing millions of complaints of blown TV speakers. This was in one of their books!

An interesting fact about the Black Knight sketch, when the knight is down to only one leg, they actually hired a one legged man to play him (a local man apparently) so he really does have one leg. Apparently this was done b/c Cleese, who plays the Knight in the rest of the scene (when two legged and no legged) just couldn't balance well on one leg.

They do one about the Black Plague and yell out “bring out your dead” to collect bodies on passing cart. Anytime my brothers family get sick I say “bring out your dead” because it’s a house of plague and we both laugh. English humour is very different to American because the Brit’s can laugh at themselves. Often I find American humour very forced or slapstick which I don’t find funny. I’m from New Zealand and we have a lot of British tv and films here. Another favourite is the sketch where a rather large man goes to restaurant and pretty much eats everything on the menu and had to keep vomiting to be able to eat more. The waiter (John Cleese) talks him into an after dinner mint biscuit and he explodes. We often reference this when someone is feeling full.
