Easiest way to explain it Sean is that the field is set to the individual bowler. And the idea is to bowl to the field, so the bowler will set the field and bowl according to those positions. It's a very strategic game.
@samhawke8183

So a test match, you are playing the long game over multiple days. The overs aren’t limited. You have to change strategies often if you can’t get a batsmen out. You will set fields depending on your bowler and the surface of the wicket. With all the fielders standing behind, they are trying to get an edge off the bat. The pace bowler is trying to bowl to those fielders

There's always a huge debate in cricket about the "spirit" v the "laws" of the game. Far moreso than any other sport. But I think the majority would agree that the boundary catches are not problematic at all, and just enjoy the skill and awareness required to pull them off.

Having 4 dudes behind the batsman is a strategy that relies on the bowler. The bowler balls deliveries that force an outside edge from the batsman, and the 4 dudes behind the batsman will catch the thing.

For the first 120 years of cricket they never used to have a boundry rope and a fielder could lean on the fence and take a catch 30 years ago the introduced the boundry rope bringing the boundry in , this made it easier for the batsman to hit sixes , so its only fair that the fielders can catch the ball throw it in and catch it In One day and T20 cricket which is limited overs cricket you do not have to bowl out the other team to win you only have to score more runs In Test cricket there is no limited overs and you usually have to bowl out the other team to finish their inning so the field placings are to get wickets , hence the more slips fielders behind the batsman

Fast bowlers tend to nick the edhe of the bat. Especially if they are getting some swing or the pitch is extra fast. So they load the slips (the catchers next to the wicket keeper) as this is most likely way to get a wicket. In perth where i am from they used to play at the waca ground which was fast and bouncy pitch. They would tend load the slips. Back in the day a common phrase was bowled Lillee (fast bowler) caught Marsh (wicketkeeper). Both western australian legends . It was common for that pairing to take the majority of wickets at the waca ground.

The boundary 'step out' is in the rules. Just like gloves are in baseball rules.
@EarlJohn61
@EarlJohn61 2 жыл бұрын
Originally, before the boundary ropes were introduced, the ball had to go over the fence, but a fielder could lean against the fence to catch it as it went over. With the boundary ropes, not only does the ball not have to travel as far but it doesn't have to be 5 feet above the ground as it reaches the boundary. So to bring a better balance to the bat v ball equation, as long as the fielder is inside the boundary while touching/controlling the ball it is considered a valid catch. But if the fielder makes a slight error of judgement and is grounded outside the boundary while touching the ball it will be given as 6 runs.
@EarlJohn61
@EarlJohn61 2 жыл бұрын
Personally, I don't like the boundary ropes. I think it makes it too much easier for the batters. But I understand that Health and Safety considerations have forced the issue due to fielders running hard to stop a ball diving head first into the concrete base of the fence.

The point is the ball stayed in the air and the player was on the pitch for the catch. The second player was in the air for the catch and landed in touch, if his foot was outside on the ground it's not out and it's a six. White for test matches that can last five days and have red balls all other matches are day and night matches hence coloured kits and white balls. As to whether most balls go behind it's where the batsman steres it unless he miss hits it. As to not having catchers mitts they are catching barehanded balls traveling in excess of one hundred miles an hour off the bat. There was a female catch you missed earlier on ,they were in dark blue kitt. It's great to have an American appreciate this wonderful game good for you that makes you an honouree Brit.

The reason why sometimes they have 4/5/6 people behind the wicket, is the bowler. If its a slower spin bowler, they normally won't have the the slips. If its a pace bowler, they may be looking for an edge hit and have more people behind the wicket for the catch
@MELODYMUNRO
@MELODYMUNRO 3 жыл бұрын
The fielders in a row behind the batsmen are called slips. They are there because the ball is swinging which increases the chances that the batsman is likely to edge the ball and thereby be caught out. Sometimes there is only the wicketkeeper because the fielding team is trying to protect the boundary. Also a wicketkeeper will stand closer to the stumps when the bowler is slower. For fast bowlers the keeper and the slips are standing around 20 feet back.

In answer to your question at 16:18. The slip cordon is there to catch the accidental edge of the bat when you were swinging the face of the bat at the ball. You have the wicket keeper in gloves behind the stumps, and then out to his or her side. (Left or right depending on whether the batsman is left or right handed) you have slip catchers. Imagine swinging a baseball bat but it has a flat face on it. If you miss a little bit and don't catch the flat of the bat face with the ball. That ball is going to take an "edge" and end up up in the air behind you. The reason why you can have the wicket keeper right up at the stumps vs way back from it. There are two main types of bowling: fast and spin. The clips you're seeing of the bowler with the short loopy kind of run- up. Versus a big run up and bowling straight and fast. The wicket keeper won't stand up at the stumps when they're trying to catch from a fast bowler. Some international fast bowlers bowl that ball at like 90+mph. And it's harder and smaller thab a baseball.
@willkerry
@willkerry 3 жыл бұрын
In answer to your question about why the fielders were arranged differently in the different clips: the fielding team are free to arrange the fielders in whatever way they choose. The decision is made primarily by the team captain and the bowler often has a say in what field they would like to bowl with as well. A common strategy for fast bowlers is to bowl the ball around the line of off stump, inviting a batter to drive the ball in to the off side of the field. If the batter gets this slightly wrong and hits the ball with the edge of the bat rather than the middle, then often the ball will fly off in to the area where those 5 fielders were stood in the Ben Stokes clip. This fielding position is called the "slips".

The reason there was only a wicket-keeper behind the stumps in the women's catch, is because the bowler is bowling spin, which is slow...in the men's catches, when there were numerous people behind the stumps, the bowler was bowling fast. 4 slips and a wicket-keeper, are there to catch the ball when the batter knicks...or edges the ball.

All the rules have been made after years of long thinking and by improving the previous ones. And the rules are still improving... so before judging anything please check out all the rules and regulations. Number 1 was probably pushed up by Indian voters. As for the field placings, all games have a wicket keeper behind the batter. But the primary strategy of test matches is to get players out. In the coloured uniforms, an innings is limited to 120 balls in T20 or 300 balls in one day cricket so preventing runs is more important so they spread fielders around more evenly. In a test it is not too risky to attack for wickets and leave larger spaces where runs can be scored.

Not the best at no 1. Some of the slip and gully catches (behind or 90 degrees to the wicket) are travelling 90-100 mph, maybe more, depending on the speed of the bowler. Reflex catches, most of them, but really impressive.

They have to toss the ball back over the boundary before they step over or onto it. If the ball is in hand whilst the fielder steps on or outside the boundary, it counts as a boundary (4 or 6). Therefore they have to throw the ball into the field before they step over the boundary, step into the field again and catch it once they're in the field again in order to get the catch, and the wicket. Trust me. I play cricket for a couple of teams and catching it by the boundary, throwing it into the field, stepping out and then back into the field and catching it again is VERY difficult to perform. If they are able to do it in a game, you just have to say "fair enough and we'll played". It's fair definetly.

The slip fielders (behind the batsman) are part of a common strategy. With this set up, the bowler will bowl a lot of full deliveries (bouncing them closer to the batsman) which forces the batsman to step forward to the bounce and play shots back up the field,with a vertical bat. The bowler is aiming to get the ball to deviate slightly off the bounce (which is much easier to do when the ball is new and the seam is still prominent,) and catch the edge of the upright bat for the slip fielders to catch. A lot of quick bowlers can 'swing' the ball, which is when they cause the ball to curve in the air, which also leads to a lot of edged shots. Great swing bowlers like Jimmy Anderson can make the ball swing 'late,' giving the impression of a straight ball, which then deviates just before the bat. (I once faced 6 Anderson style late swing balls from a bowling machine and I don't think I got within a foot of hitting any of them!) Even with a large field, the batsman is always constrained in his shot choices by good bowlers putting the ball in good places.

Limited overs cricket has a restriction on how many fielders are allowed outside the circle. For 15 overs it's a maximum of 4 outside the circle. But you would never have more than 3 slips in one day cricket..and even then probably only for a few overs. So you can't have them anywhere you want. In test cricket yes, except for having more than 2 fielders behind square on the leg side.

The line of fielders behind the batter are called slips and they are placed there for any his hit that deflects in that direction (which happens a lot). And those boundary catches are fair as long as the fielder never steps outside the rope or steps on the rope while in contact with the ball. If he is in mid air, that's fine just like a basketballer saving a ball from going out of bounds if he can hit it back while in mid air before it bounces.

The rule is that you cannot catch the ball by stepping the boundary rope or beyond the boundary rope otherwise it will be declared as six so, first you catch the ball within the boundary and if fielder or the catcher loose control of his body in that process then, he can just throw the ball in the air within the boundary rope and then just step beyond the rope to regain control of the body then step back inside the boundary to complete the catch that he threw it into the air just like the dude in the video did bro

actually in cricket fielding positions aren't fixed like baseball so fielding teams knit's strategies with fielding positions if they strategy works they will get the favourable results. how they make strategy ? as cricket ball is more unpredictable than baseball the the fielding team always places the position of fielders according to the planned bowler delivery if you take the example of catch 6 they placed most of the fielders as slips the bowler is delivering the ball in such way that ball hits the edge of bat / make the batsman to knick the ball so that it can be caught by fielders

I've checked below but I haven't seen this answer to your question re why they cram so many fielders behind the batsmen, at certain times and not others. When a team starts to bat at the beginning of an an innings, the bowling side gets a new, shiny hard ball, which travels faster and is easier to make "swing" , in order to deceive the batsmen. This happens by means of the bowler shining just one side of the ball on his trousers (pants) , so the air flow is altered, over the ball , as the ball is bowled - so you see the batsmen misjudging the flight of the ball and "edging" it to all random points behind him, at speed. (hence the array of fielders in the "slips"). As the ball gets older, softer and more "roughed up", it is not so easy to make the ball "swing" or move so fast to confuse the batter - but it becomes easier to make the ball spin, at slow speed to confuse the batsmen, by changing its direction, in both ways , after it bounces . This is why the great catch by the female wicket keeper was from a slower "spin" ball , with no other fielders behind the batter - but all of the great catches by other "slip" fielders were off really fast bowling . The ball gets replaced every 80 overs (a cycle of 6 deliveries in a test match) - so you see changes in these tactics, every time the ball is replaced

In baseball many many catches are taken over the fence. or off a foul hit behind the line. As long as they catch it its out. In cricket they don't have the advantage of having a fence to lean against or jump onto or even scale up it with their feet. Cricket rules are much more stringent and those that toss the ball up and come inside the playing field are really difficult. Number 2 has the player catching the ball completely. In baseball the batter would be out right there and then. After successfully catching the ball the player cannot take it over the line so has to let it go etc.. Also the perimeter has been brought in to stop players hurting themselves on the fence. Normally the ball would have had to go over the actual fence for a six.

So this list is voted on by people on the UK only and was for catches taken in the UK you need to find a list of the greater ever as there are some many catches missing that but most of these to shame

Just enjoy the catches bro, can’t help who put the video together. Also I don’t like the ‘throw back’ rule either. When I was a kid, there weren’t ‘rope boundaries’ where you can skip around these days. The actual fence was the boundary.

that ball frikkin hurts. was hit once on the knee by batsman's shot. TOok me out for a few days. for these dudes to catch with one hand some of these, it would hurt.

Well These were England's best catches......😂 I don't why they put only Indian catch at 1st place which wasn't even deserving

This is England’s best catches with a few others chucked in. Watch just Steve Smith’s best catches and most are better than these. This poll was obviously held in England and yes some are great but many are not in the best 200 ever let alone top 50.

You're right it wasn't the best but there are more Indian fans than any other and they can't be anything but biased to their own side.

@@Shivam-mf5lv Nope. Nice try Karen. I didn't say they should all be white. Bit racist aren't you? All I said was that it wasn't the best and India have the most fans...all true.

I agree, that catch is not that good. Sorry for being racist ( but I have seen people from west always being racist towards Indians and even in cricket matches.) And as far as I know Karen is a feminine word ( correct me if I’m wrong ).

@@Shivam-mf5lv Apology accepted. I play local league cricket in England still, in a team with players from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka as well as British born Asian and Black players. We are all just humans and cricketers. Karen has become an internet shorthand term for those who act like a middle-aged white woman complaining all the time. ;)

These are the best catches of the matches held in England...not in the world. By the way loved your reaction.If you want to react to women's cricket then react to 2020 women's worldcup final b/w Australia & India which has attracted 86,000 people. It is the highest attendance for any women's sporting event.

Usually Indian fans make up these videos so are very biased when it comes to there own players that’s why an Indian player was number one. That catch wasn’t even in the top 100

Few things about this video. first of all. These were from ECU , England's cricket channel. so all these catches were from England Stadiums, either it will be England's cricket league called County, or by England International team, or by any team which is playing against England in England. Or maybe few catches might include from the world cup matches which held in England. 2nd most important thing is that, these catches are people's favorite, So it is rated by people not by cricket standards. Now that first catch, as you were surprised to see it on no 1 spot. just remember, that was caught by an indian player, and India got 1.3 billion population. So even definitely they will vote for their player.

imo, you are being too picky. you say this one is fair enough but that one isn't. if he is good enough to pull this one off then that is great, but this one is just lame. I say, if the person is good enough to get rid of the ball before crossing or standing on the rope, and then have the co-ordination not to touch the ball again before they get both feet off the ground then they are good enough to have claimed a catch for their team. just putting my opinion out there for what it is worth.
