A city surrounded by 7 mountains = a lot of rainy days 😂 So don't forget our saying when you visit: There are no bad weather, only bad clothing. 😁 And I will recommend a visit

I live here, and Bergen has one of the best street art scenes I know about. We know to take care of it, and although it's not always legal, it is still mostly respected. The artists have plenty of galleries to sell their art, and house owners rarely remove art from their walls or report it to the police, so it's not a problem. Many companies gives the community walls free to decorate or even pay street artists to fresh up their places. One of my absolute favorite artists, AFK, is from here, and has many works around the town. I can recommend looking him up. :)

I did the annual seven mountain walk last Sunday, where we try to reach the top of all seven (official) peaks around the centre. It was difficult, and took 12 hours but was worth it

Can't believe he did not mention 3-kroneren ... the tiny hotdog stand where you can buy all sort of hotdogs like the reindeer one among other.. have been in Bergen twice, only had the chance to go there once ... but man I remember those delicious hotdogs.

It may not be the #1 internesting sight for everyone, but the museum in Bergen which made the heaviest impression on me, was St. Jørgen's hospital. It was once the main hospital for sufferers of Lepra aka. Hansen's disease. We got to see portraits of patients, where in the country they came from, how they lived at the hospital.. They even had a chapel for themselves, with a corridor from the hospital to their own seats with fence to keep townspeople from coming close to the patients. We got to the lab and instruments of Gerhard Armauer Hansen, the head physician at the hospital at the end of the 19th century, who discovered the lepra bacterium and from whom the diease has been named. And there was a small exihibition on medical research on this disease, the research named for him in nowadays located in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia.

Lepra is most commonly known in English as "leprosy", and the afflicted "lepers", as that's how it's described in the Bible.

The fish market in Bergen is a massive tourist trap. Do not recommend at all. It's way better to go someplace like Søstrene Hagelin or whatnot to get good seafood for a reasonable price. Also, I'm surprised he didn't walk by and mention Trekroner'n, the sausage stand which sells 250g (abt. half a pound) sausages in giant buns.

Bergen's main town planner has been Fire. In 1702 more than 90% of the city burnt down. The second largest fire may have been in 1916 when a lot o the city centre burnt down; followed by the 1944 "Voorbode" explosion when 120 metric tons of explosive (depending on your calculations about 1,8 miilion hand granades) blrew up and pulerized and burnes the areas of Vågen and Nordnes. After the 1955 fire some people suggested that Bryggen sghould be torn down. Partly because it was German (cf World War II occupation) and because it was slum-like and a giant fire hazard. Luckily, they dodn't. But no-one is allowed to live there. Bryggen/Bergen was the only city in Norway that was allowed to expåort dried cod (stock fish and klippfisk; slighly different variants), even if the fish was caught in Lofoten or even further north. Being extremely durable (it can last years) it was exported to Catholic Europe where they weren't allowed to eat fish on Fridays and during Lent. (And the rest of the year being relatively cheap, certainly compared to meat). At bryggen there's even a big statue of a dried cod.

1916 you mean I assume, not 2016... As for the trade thing. It's not that Bergen was the *only* place allowed to trade. But it international trade north of Bergen was illegal with the exception of the trade with the Russians. And the Hanseatic league in Bergen had trade privileges (paying a fixed low sum instead of a toll based of the value of the cargo, I believe it was something like a bag of grain in the original letter of privilege from the king?) But theoretically if you lived south of Bergen you where free to trade with foreigners. You just would have to pay way higher toll then the Hanseatic league traders in Bergen would. Also, I'm not sure if the Hanseatic league had the same privilege elsewhere (further south) in Norway or if the privilege only applied to Bergen.

Yes, the paintings from the national romantic are of norwegian mountains and fjords, as it was the time when Norway was finding back to it's own culture again. Mountains and fjords was on focus because Denmark don't have them.

I know this video is old but I would just like to say that on Fløien there is actually a tiny hut in the tree that you can rent although renting it is extremely hard and can cost you more then 2000 kroner. (Norwegian currency)

1:04 Not exactly. Bergen was all about trade from the start. It used to be illegal for foreign traders coming from the south to trade north of Bergen, and for international trade north of Bergen (Russia was kind of excepted) So anyone who wanted to export anything from northern Norway used to come to Bergen to trade. Likewise traders from northern Germany etc used to come there and hand privileges like reduced toll and taxes in that city.

The "seven mountains" is a bit of a saying, and should maybe not be taken totally literally. The three mountains Fløyen, Ulriken and Løvstakken pretty much touch the city centre itself, but once you get beyond those there must be at least eleven mountains, all competing about which ones should count as "the" seven. It's an ongoing debate with no concensus. 😊 11:29: I MADE THOSE SIGNS! Well, the top four, green ones were made by me and my colleagues. The others have apparently been added later. 😁

You say theres nowhere like Bergen in the USA, but my family are Norwegian (and German) and also my uncle now lives in Seattle, which is twinned with Bergen. Seattle and Bergen are both by the sea, and both cold and wet with thick forests, so have a bit in common.

If you (Tayler) were to come to Bergen, bring a lot of money. The last time I was in Bergen, the sweater you see in the film cost about 240 dollars. And that leather hat cost about 80 dollars. And a trip with the Flöybanen costs about 8 dollars. A fish dinner with drinks about 80 dollars. per person. Regardless, I hope you get the chance to travel!!

They can yes, but not for the reasons you state :) Back in the days red or earth colours were the cheapest colours to paint with because of the easily available pigments. White and blue were the expensive colours, so as people got richer they started painting their houses in different colours to reflect both the era's"fashion" and also to show their socioeconomic status. I think it's cool that even today when no colours are more expensive than others, the tradition has been kept alive.

Come to Norway Tyler :) I would easy let you stay at my place for free, just outside Bergen in the low mountain areas, a few meters from fresh water full of rainbow trouts and fantastic nature. Pocket money will be all you need. No problem for me to bring you around to see and experience places that tourists will never experience :) You can even bring a friend or partner.

Bergen is pretty, but boring. Just my opinion as a Norwegian who has been there numerous times. I would certainly never live there. Infamous for always having rain. Also limited shopping, and very poor selection and variety compared to Oslo. Not a fan… kinda shocking as it is our 2nd largest city after Oslo, besides Trondheim. And I don’t care what any native Bergenser has to say about that, as you so badly wanna be a republic and be separated from the rest of Norway, by all means be my guest🤡🤡🤡 Also a bit disappointed Tyler that you don’t recognize from from several other reaction videos you’ve done in the past. He showed you his family’s cabin… and not only does he live in Norway, but he’s of course a Norwegian as well. And yes Bergen is famous for its beauty, which also means one of the most touristy spots in all of Norway. I was even followed by these Americans once.
