I was in Saint Petersburg for a week in the spring of 2016, I got there from Moscow on the fast speed train, a 4 hour trip. The city is beautiful, extremely safe and clean, and absolutely the people is very nice. I spent 4 hours in the Hermitage, basically half the afternoon, but I was just able to see a small portion of the museum. The Hermitage is the winter palace, but there is another amazing place in the outskirts of Saint Petersburg, the Peterhof Palace , it’s similar to Versaille Palace in France, but more impressive. Greetings from Mexico City, I know you guys spent a couple of months in Mexico.

Spent 19 days in Moscow and 10 in St. Petersburg back in 2007 - my wife and I, on our own. No tour groups. Loved it. Needed more time. I have also traveled to many countries. Too bad we get brainwashed in the USA about certain countries. We know that happens towards us by certain countries. But brainwashing in the end is just a lie. That's why traveling is the best education - cliche to say, but holds true. You learn for yourself. Keep enjoying your life, and keep sharing your experiences.

I have actually moved from NYC to Saint-Petersburg and been living here for more than 10 years (I am half-Russian half-American). The city is so amazing that it would take several weeks to explore everything interesting in here. And Russia itself is really a great country. It is so different from the picture Hollywood and Western news usually show. I would definitely recommend to visit this country and see everything with your own eyes.

@@glebsokolov9959 There is a number of reasons why I have done this. But if you are interested I will write you the main ones. As most Russians you are confusing that money that an average American sees in his paycheck with the actual money he has at his disposal. The price of living in the US especially in such big cities as NYC is tremendously high so most people cannot afford to save anything. The second reason is connected to this one. Because of high expenses a lot of people have to work overtime or to find a second job. That is why they usually dont really have free time for themselves and their families. They dont have enough time to travel, to have a hobby or to meet with their friends. And here we come to the third reason. Because of those things I have written above social relationships in the US are usually very shallow cause again people simply dont have time for that. In Russia such things are different and I prefer those things that way. Russia has its own problems but here I feel that my life became much more relaxed and comfortable. And that often usually worth a lot more than a larger income.

@@glebsokolov9959 I have a small company which specializes in commercial property management. And i earn much more than 20 000 rubles ofc. But for such large city as Saint-Petersburg and especially Moscow such low wages are a rarity. Even my office manager who is just 22 yo earns 45 000.

@@WAYAWAYWithAsh , You should visit the so called 'Golden Ring of Russia' - the old central cities of Russia. This is the real native Russia, not like the St.P. or Moscow megapolices... Take a trip with a tourist ship along the Volga river, or a Trans-Siberian train trip - from Moscow, through Siberia, Mongolia to the Beijing in China... The train will stops for hours in many cities and places by the route, so you will have few hours to visit almost every region 'spots' in Russia along the route... Russia is soo-o-o different, even 'the Russian Russia', since about 120 native groups and nations are the inhabitants of Russian Federation: Christians, Muslims, Buddhists... Do you know the fact, were are TWO official languages in many regions of Russian Federation, the Russian language (the official state language) and a native one of the ethnic local majority? Did you know that, Russia speak in 100+ languages? ;-)) Some people says: " _Russia is not a country, Russia is a Civilisation!_ "... But you have to learn more about the Trans-Siberian trip in advance and prepare yourself mentally for more than a week travel in the train, if you decide to 'torture' yourself for a week in a wagon... Anyway, many people says it is the best experience in their life ever! ;-))) You will cross ten hour bands, you will travel thousands miles, you will meet hundred different nations and ethnic cultures not for such a big money (actually, for a ridiculously little cost).

One more 'tip' for the new-bees: _join a group with an English-speaking guide!_ You should not even pay for it, since a lot of foreign tourist groups are walking in Hermitage with a English-speaking guide... Just wait for a half-an-hour... ;-))) You will definitely meet one of them... Just join one of them silently as a group member, nobody will even notice that... ;-))) Walking with a guide in the Hermitage is much-much more interesting and useful, without any doubt! I did such a 'nasty' thing with Russian guided tourist groups than I was a student in St.P. ;-)))

that's why travel is important....to see and experience things for yourself and not just live being influenced by media bias that has particular agenda. And it's especially Russia but Eastern Europe in general is not portrayed well in Western media, including popular culture (Hollywood movies are the worst offender)...but at least people are only pleasantly surprised when they come here (I am not Russian btw. but i'm from this post-communist area).

I was born there and now I live in New York. I have never been in St. Petersburg since 2001 and seems like it dramatically changed in a good way. It is nice and pleasant to hear that you liked it. Cause in the past it was dark and gloomy city, now people started to wear more colorfull clothing and became more positive, probably because the majority get rid of drinking alcohol :) There are many hidden and interesting places in this city. Boat tour is a totally different view on the city where you can find many hidden places which you wouldn't able to see by walking the streets. Hermitage is very very impressive inside... Definitely a place to step inside. Many parks, castles, churches and other antique buildings in there.

Saint Petersburg is very European city. If you want to see ancient Russia from Saint Petersburg, just go to Veliky Novgorod city (don't confuse it to Nizhniy Novgorod city, which is different), this is around 3 hours speed train from Saint Petersburg. If you travel from Moscow just take a look on 'Golden Ring of Russia' - this is tour of old Russian cities.

Even with two days cruise ship visiting this city and endless excursion buses to different places you will just get a very high level overview . I lived there for 5 years and could not explore everything, this city has many "layers" . Together with Prague and Paris this is one of the most beautiful cities to visit in Europe which deserves minimum week of your vacation time.

I'm living in that beautiful city ❤️ and I'm still exploring it. It's just impossible to visit all of museums around, you need years for that :). I like diversity of the city: a lot of different people are living here, this is not for 'tsars' or richest people. This city is so lovely, modern and full of art people and makers that really love it. Unfortunately you didn't have enough time to explore it and also travel to Moscow, which is different from Saint Petersburg, but also very interesting and modern. Well, next time welcome to visit it! I believe that someday we'll open our borders and can travel without visas.

Hi from Saint-Petersburg! Thank you for your visit, I’m glad that you liked the city. You’re always welcome! Some tips and remarks: 9:05 - I find it a bit funny that you are surprised about the fact that you were able to pay with your credit card everywhere in SPb :) We have very developed electronic and mobile banking service systems in Russia (I would say they are much better comparing to European ones). You can pay via Paypass-enabled payment terminals almost everywhere (even in small Russian towns you can easily find places where you can do it). I can’t even remember the last time I had any cash in my pocket. 17:12 - The most popular Russian fast food chain restaurant where you can find some traditional takeaway meals is Teremok (Russian: Теремок). These restaurants specialize in Russian traditional dishes such as blini (Russian pancakes or crepes) that can be easily taken away and eaten outside or anywhere you’d like to do it. You can find these restaurants all over SPb. 18:44 - This whole building is not the immigration office (the immigration office is a part of it), this is the marine station for cruise and ferry vessels (one of the passenger seaport buildings). And for all the people in the comment section who would like to visit St.Petersburg, but worrying about safety: I would say that it is as safe as any other big European city, even at night, even in the outskirts. Yes, we have some pickpockets, you can meet people kindly asking for contributions to a fake charity (as it happened at 2:25), but I can’t say that SPb is more dangerous than, for example, Paris or London where all this stuff exists as well. In my opinion, the main problem with travelling to Russia is the language barrier (of course, service workers at the hotels, museums and restaurants usually speak decent English, but the majority of ordinary Russians don’t). But Russians are quite friendly (despite the fact they don’t usually smile) and in most cases they may somehow understand you and try to help. My recommendation: if you need someone to ask something in Russia, find a young person dressed in trendy clothes - there is a big chance that he or she speaks English quite well. I would definitely recommend you all to visit Saint-Petersburg at least once in a lifetime. I moved here from another part of Russia many years ago and this beautiful city keeps fascinating me everyday.

It's typical... Of course, the Church of Spilled Blood is a masterpiece of its own kind, but it is a typical visit place for the foreign tourists... In fact, St.P. is beautiful even at early Autumn, especially in St.P. parks and suburbs... The 'Golden Autumn' how we Russian say about it! Just imagine, hundreds of square kilometers of golden, yellow, red tree leafs around your visible space and under your feet! The sweet smell of rotten leafs in St.P. parks and suburbs! Uhm-m-mm!!! The St.P. is beautiful not only at the Summer time. At early Autumn it has the special kind of 'Colorful Nature Death'... Yes! The Nature natural death can be so poetic, calm, epic and unbelievable beautiful! In St.P. at early Autumn time, especially... ;-)))

TravelingMel It is a big city, about 5 million in population, but it’s a sprawling city that doesn’t really feel imposing. It’s not full of skyscrapers or anything. In the summer, it’s perfect for strolls. There are lots of parks, squares, canals and bridges and it doesn’t feel crazy overcrowded like so many cities feel. That said... it’s not Montana. The rest of Russia is a lot like the Montana/Dakotas area, but not St. Petersburg. If you can though, avoid it September through April. Not that pleasant.

TravelingMel What month? If in the summer, take the hydrofoil boat to Peterhof. Otherwise, 3 days isn’t enough to go off the beaten path. If you enjoy history, there is the Russian Naval Museum that’s really unique. If you like natural history, there’s the Kuntzkamera Museum of natural history, which has quite the collection of oddities (which some of the Tzars were into). I highly recommend a bus tour as well. They’ll take you to far more interesting buildings than you will find yourselves.

It helps the experience to make at home a translation chart of the cyrillian script to our script.. If you read the cyrillian you will notice there are many words you will recognize: Restoran = Restaurant, Stop is Stop ;-) Kafe is coffee, chaj = tea etc. etc. Return and enjoy :-) And ehhh... there is very good Russian food! Or popular is also the Georgian food : de-li-cious!!!
