@@carolthorson7854 From what I can see from the people this isn’t completely true. I see Albo’s posts get a ton of hate from other Labor and Greens voters and even Dutton getting hated on by his own voters. Compulsory voting removes all the voter disenfranchisement tactics common to US elections. Also, our voter rolls, voting districts and running elections is done by the independent Australian Electoral Commission so no partisan purging of voter rolls and limiting polling stations as occurs in the US.

And the important thing there about the districts is that there is absolutely no gerrymandering at all. There are still safe seats for various parties, but that’s purely down to demographics and not something parties can change to their advantage. If the US was to copy just one thing from other countries it should be having a truly independent body draw the borders of electoral districts with the aim of the simplest possible shapes that have roughly similar numbers of voters.

It's always on a Saturday. There are early voting centres everywhere in cities/suburbs. You can request a postal voting form and it gets sent out to you for free with a prepaid envelope to send it back. Our electorates are defined by an independent body, so there's very little gerrymandering. Our elections are managed independently by the AEC. AEC workers are not allowed to be registered to any political party. They are generally paid well for their work. Their mission is to enable as many people to vote as possible. If you previously never voted because you never enrolled, they won't stand in your way to enrol and vote in a future election. They drive out to remote settlements, sometimes 500+km for just 8 people to cast their vote. We have preferential voting, so you can't waste your vote. Our governments may not rank highly for transparency on some/many metrics, and we may have too many media tycoons and billionaires interfering with our elections. But at least it's an actual democracy and not just one by name.

The polls always tighten in the lead up to the election itself. This will probably show a trend back to Labor (Albanese) as the focus changes from whinging about cost of living and general moaning to actually thinking about the issues going forward. Dutton is a conservative populist but he's paper thin on policy and not well liked, whereas Albanese is pretty underwhelming. So it's not a great choice. The longer Albanese waits to call the election, the greater the chance of interest rate cuts to his benefit and the longer Trump is in and creating chaos, the less attractive Dutton's Trump "mini -me" approach will look to the electorate.

Albanese does not care about Australian business….I am a business owner, and due to a horrible economy (thanks to Albanese’s cluelessness re business)…I am laying off staff……so my people are suffering too, small business and the people they employ are suffering. But it is all ok, because the priority for Albasleezy was to spend tax payers money on splitting the country 60/40 on a moral issue that wasn’t clearly described to anyone. Its Pretty Simple really. "Australia Day" or Invasion Day as its also appropriately called celebrates the establishment of Sydney as a Penal Colony, at best it should be called NSW Day, which is what I always call it. Same as if the USA chose to celebrate the establishment of Jamestown instead of Independence Day as their National Day, and Jamestown had been settled by a bunch of Convicts sent their against their will and the troops sent to guard them. Australia Day has also only been a public holiday since 1994, its not even historic. It was celebrated by certain elite circles in NSW as Foundation Day in the 1800s but again, just NSW. Australia Day *should* be January 1st, because that is the date of Federation, when the 6 politically distinct colonies came together to form a united Australia.

And change the already legislated "Stage 3' tax cuts to make them pander more to Labor voters and keep higher tax rates for those earning more than about 1.5x average wage. Fortunately they had trouble getting the superannuation tax-grab legislation through the senate, but it basically means we have no idea what either Labor or Liberal party will actually do once elected...

Hi Ryan, election day is always a Saturday, so most people don't have to ask for time off work. You can also vote early, either in person at polling booths or by post. Yes, Peter Dutton is the leader of what is basically our Republican party. He is a mini-Trump, but more of a thug. You seemed a bit confused about the two party preferred votingnum, ber This comes down to our preferential voting system. In the lower house, you number all the candidates running for your seat from 1 to whatever, in order of your preference. When they count the votes, the the person with the lowest number of votes gets their votes allocated to one of the remaining candidates based on the second preferences of the voters who had voted for them. Then the lowest votes of the remaining candidates drops out and their votes get reallocated and so on until there are only two left and who ever has more votes wins. It sounds confusing but it basically means that everyone's vote counts because you can say "I think candidate B is slightly less crap than candidate A, so if all my higher choices lose, at least I can have a say about who would be the least crappy option." That anti-Dutton ad literally came on at the start of this video.

To win government in Australia, you need to have at least 76 seats in the House of Representatives (half plus 1). Labor has 78 seats so it can only lose rwo seats before it loses its majority. However the Coalition (the Liberals, led by Peter Dutton, and the Nationals) only have 55 seats so they would need to hold on to all the seats they have and win back 21 more - a big ask. Independents hold 12 seats in the lower house and other parties have six. So Dutton would have to get back a lot of those seats from the independents. Independents are also targetting a lot more Coalition seats. Dutton's strategy seems to be to copy Trump, but Trump might not be doing him any favours right now. It's possible that Labor could lose its majority but hold into power if it can get the support of independent or Green members.

I dislike lean government and private sector initiative...those are the worst evils any government can have. I like the fact our government steps in and protects the people from unscrupulous private sector companies and enforces laws so they can't do what they want (because we all know private companies have the best interests of their workers and care about the health of their customers and not just shareholders and profits) The best is fair firm government and policed private sector...because the private sector would do anything for more profit, even if it means poisoning children to get it.

Say goodbye to Albo then, he is subsidising foreign companies to build multiple high rise rental homes while allowing our builders to go bankrupt! He has initiated several fake portfolios for unaccountable mates and has funded/supported no local businesses! He cut access to popular tourist areas, and has allowed many foreigners to buy tax free properties! He has a mission to destroy our farming, and traditional power! He signed us up to $350B deal with the US that will never happen now, and several generations of huge debts! We are all in recession, but he's now very rich!

Peter Dutton better not win!! I'm not a party voter, I'll usually choose close to the day which party I think is best..... but Peter Dutton is just a walking red flag of a man and I really don't feel he is the best of a bad bunch! Albanese isn't a forward thinker, he is a bit boring as a PM but I'd rather boring than Voldemort!

Captain Cook arrived in Australia on 29th April 1770, however Australia Day is 26th January every year... Some people believe that because we celebrate Australia Day on 26th of January, this is Invasion Day - Really, they should do their homework because we don't celebrate Invasion Day on 29th April, we celebrate all Australians on 26th January...

To my fellow Aussies - the last thing we need is Dutto to borrow a leaf out of the Trump book and push us towards a facist kleptocracy. We can't afford to have an oligarch-owned politician in power. We'll need the most compassionate and progressive government we can bring together to get us through the backlash of what's happening in the USA. Let's go forward with positivity and love, not hate and divisionism.

EXACTLY... Dutton will ONLY look after the mining magnates who are his donors, give them tax breaks, break unions and erode our free health. Dutton is NOT in touch with the population, never has been. He also has an unsavory past as a policeman, accused of violence towards youths in custody. He reminds me of an undertaker or serial killer. AND listen to his negative talk and insults, he has no real policies, nothing! except taking away the rights of the people. What inflation? It is a Peter Dutton hyped up lie. At present INFLATION is below 4%. I remember inflation in the 1980s creeping up to 11% and staying there for years with interest rates sitting at 15% to 18%. Plus all the armchair critics don't know that inflation below 3.4% is not conducive to economic growth and could sink the economy! What is the unemplyment rate now, below 4%? It is being elevated by the unnecessary high interest rates set by the Federal Reserve and I honestly don't think they ever get it right. Again in the past unemployment has climbed up between 7.5% and 10% for long stretches.

Actually voting day in my little village is not a bad day, grab a democracy sausage from the charity BBQ, chat to the other locals, discuss the lack of rain or grass or prospects for the next crop or the price of wool or sheep or simply whinge about whatever is pissing you off at the time. After that, down to the pub and discuss much of the same but lubricated with a few cold ones.

Yeah, our Preferential Voting System means smaller party/independent candidates can still be voted for to disclose your preference, and then how your vote is redistributed if they're unsuccessful, repeating every time until a clear "winner" is determined. And a smart party will take note of where their preferences came from, as to appeal to those voters going forward
