Hi, if you like Military Bands this is something different, The Band of the British Brigade of Gurkhas at Virginia International NATO Festival in the US, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmi0cp2Zf9uLqdk with them dancing at 4:00 mins and then the Brigade's "folk" ensemble playing Traditional Nepalese music, kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJTHhIWBnNqfe9E The sole difference between Government Sanctioned Killers and Gentlemen Warriors is Music, hence the British Armed Forces are very good at it!!!

I'm an American veteran and not ashamed to say that the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines is the premier military band in the world. Whether they are playing Retreat, Trouping the Colours, on the march, at an International Tattoo, annual RM Music Fest, or in a Symphonic setting... no matter what the genre they are the best ! Their marching is precision itself

Old Brit ex-Para here, Barone; Yup. the RM Band are splendid musicians, bu don;t diss your own Military bands, all five US Armed Services have superb bands, including some absolutely splendid vocalists :-) Indeed, most military bands at Brigade level or above, are extremely good, and bandsmen are allowed, and often encouraged, to form their own subsets in their own preferred genres. IMo. The US Navy band have the edge on the competition. Well worth checking out on YT.

The “Navy” song you refer to is “ I am sailing” by Rod Stewart. Famously played by the Royal Marines Band when the SS Canberra set sail for the Falklands War in 1982. I remember it well as I was a young Royal Marine on my way to the Falklands. The Royal Marines Band entertained us all the way down to the Falklands and when the Fighting began they slipped seamlessly into their rolè as Stretcher-bears and First Aiders. Without doubt the BEST Military Band in the World my friend.

Guess it might be difficult to explain to an American - even Anglo-interested as you are - how the feeling of pride in our nation's history - for us, the rule of law, justice, stoicism, democracy (Oh, yes!) - and the determination that these things are part of ourselves, are evoked by such tunes - the British have fought many, many wars - and the Royal Marines are the hard backbone of our national consciousness. The leopard skins (& sometimes Tiger skins) is a tradition dating back to the 18 Century, when drummers who joined from other countries wore animal skins to protect the uniform from wearing out due to the bulky bass drums ... the skins are only taken from animals that have died naturally and never from hunting.

I personally spoke with a drummer from one of the Highland Regiments and was told by him that in the days of the Raj in India, the officers would use the band's drummers to beat out a cadence and drive the leopards to where the officers were waiting in a shooting blind. After the leopard was shot, the custom was for the officers to give the skin to the drummer. He said that nowadays, the skins are all synthetic and are for show and tradition.

@SoGal - the tune played on the fiddle was a hornpipe, very popular in the days of sailing warships, and frequently danced to by the crew when the official order for a spell of recreation was given to the crew at sea: "Hands to Dance and Skylark!" Re. the location; judging from the uniforms worn by the sentries on either side of the gates where they came (look at the baggy breeches with wide vertical stripes), my guess is that it was filmed in the German-speaking part of Switzerland.

This was filmed at the Basel Military Tattoo in Switzerland and taken from a coverage on German TV. Took the liberty of providing you with translations of what the commentator said, some pieces of information you may find interesting. Not 100% sure about the spelling of the names though, my apologies to the people involved if I botched them. 2:30 It's the creme-de-la-creme we have the pleasure of watching in the square here, but not only does the Band of the Royal Marines excel musically but also in marching and in making formations. To match the piece "Sailing" by Rod Steward they now will form an anchor. 4:00 The formation on display here consists of two complete Military Bands and the next piece is a prime example of how powerful those can sound. The Title played is called Invincible (by Two Steps from Hell / Thomas Bergersen) 6:53 In total the Royal Marines have 350 musicians, about 80 of them are taking part here in Basel, and all of them, we were assured, are very proud to be part of this world-renowned group. 7:12 The drummers are led by a woman, Carrie Silk, she's located in the center and her drum has a broader red ring at the top. 7:58 Now they are joined by Lt. Col. Nick Crays as conductor, he is the overall leader of all musicians in the Royal Marines. Two months ago another medal was added to his chest when he was appointed an Officer of the British Empire by Prince Charles himself. 9:20 This was Violinist Alice Hudson. To end their performance the Band now will play "Rule Britannia", for many Brits a kind of an unofficial national anthem.

I reckon you would love Edinburgh Tattoo and also a video of the drum section of this band with "Top Secret Drum Corps". "Sailing" was the theme to a seventies BBC TV series called Sailor about life on carrier HMS Ark Royal. I can speak some German from school and trips there. I used to sometimes watch things like this on German TV on the analogue Astra satellite before it all went digital and own country based as a way to ensure TV rights.

What you might not have noticed is that on the opposite hip to their drum, the members of the Corps of Drums have a bugle and it is not there for decoration. Back when ships were under sail, every Royal Navy ship, other than the smallest, would have some sort of force of Marines on board. Every detachment of Marines had at least one drummer whose job it was to pass orders by drum beat or bugle call. Whilst lesser orders may be communicated by bosun's pipe the more important ones fell to the Marine drummer. When the Captain gave the order to "Beat to Quarters" the drummer would commence and continue beating a specific rhythm which everyone on board knew meant that the ship had to be 'cleared for action' and the crew assemble at their posts for battle (aka quarters). Around the time of the World Wars it was still commonplace for such orders to be communicated by the Marine Drummer, all be it by bugle call over the PA system. By the way, they have their own KZbin channel kzbin.info

I carefully wrote the names of the tunes down, then you go and read them all out. The one they marched on to is A life on the ocean wave. It's the official March of the Royal Marines. Sailing was a pop song, but it's been adopted by the navy. The Sailors Hornpipe has been used for everything when they want a nautical theme. Mike Oldfield used it to close out his Tubular Bells album too. There are other military bands, the Guards are pretty good, but the R. M. Are the best.

Discipline + solid musicianship = The Royal Marine Band! That's essentially what the announcer was inferring with his comments during the video. I've seen them rehearse; it's done with military precision, as you would expect. They know their instruments and routines so well that nothing could go wrong - and if it ever did, they'd know how to compensate and fix things in an instant. The reference to Prince Charles stated that he had personally conferred an honour (OBE) on the band master - the Prince of Wales may do such a thing in lieu of the Queen, and he is doing it more often than ever these days, as the Queen is lightening her duties in view of her age. The familiar tune played by the solo violinist was the Sailor's Hornpipe.

As I've said in a comment to you previously, Sarah . . . almost all regiments have their own band in some way or other. Including the Grenadiers, Coldstream, Light Infantry, etc . . . You've even seen the Mounted Band when you watched the Queens Coronation video recently . . . But what you watched here was just a small part of the RM Band - which are sometimes requested to visit and so go out to various countries to perform at their shows . . . What you really need to watch is the RM Massed Bands coming down The Mall, Birdcage, etc, as they head towards or back from Buck Palace . . . Massed Band just means all 4/5 of them being together, if they are all available for it, marching down playing together - and that's also when you get their full drum line placed out in front, too . . . Definitely worth a watch for you!!! There are/were videos on YT, maybe around 2014-16? - of when on 1 Mall walk/play, they were joined by a US band on one side and I think a Belgian one at the other side . . . these vids are usually between 15-35 mins max, depending on who was taking them at the time - and if they were in the right place so as to catch the very start of it to walk along with them all the way . . .

Love the Sailors Hornpipe. Probably the most well known British naval tune and dance there is. Amazing when you see hundreds of sailors dancing in unison on the deck of a British battleship. Love also how she is decked out in traditional naval gear. Well done young woman.

The association of Rod Stewart’s song ‘Sailing’ with the Royal Navy goes back to the 1970’s with a documentary (Sailor) on the Audacious Class aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal before she was scrapped in 1980. Worth a watch.

Really do love your reactions, and especially learning more UK military history. "The Rifles Sounding Retreat" on Horseguards would be an interesting reaction - the fast pace of light infantry makes their "double time" pretty memorable. The Rifles Regiment came about by amalgamating the Light Infantry Regiments and the Royal Green Jackets - who you have come across already.

Thanks for sharing all these video's , The Royal Marines are an elite force of the British armed services and are associated with the Royal Navy, origainally they were employed to uphold the law and order aboard Royal Naval vessels , later they were regimented and served on capital ships and usually manned one of the main turrets. larger vessels carried a ships band, I served on HMS Ark Royal, the last straight through carrier in the early seventies. the band are all specialist musicaian and are renowned throughout the world, I know the US have similar marching bands but I do not think you can make a comparison between military bands and University bands playing at football or baseball grounds. Although associted with the Royal Navy the Marines have fought on land and sea around the world and like the SAS and other specialised units are held in high regard.

Point of order. The Royal Marines are not *associated* with the Royal Navy, they are part of the Royal Navy, and we're ***VERY*** proud of our bootnecks and bandies. Don't tell them any of us said that, though; we love to wind them up. Yours, a Royal Navy matelot.

This is the Basel Tattoo, in Switzerland. I used to live just down the road. Great event. Starts with the bands parading through the city. If you'd continued to watch this you'd have seen bands from other nations join the Royal Marines for a rousing finale ending with Champs-Elysées / Waterloo Road. You should also watch them do a magical version of Holst's Planets Suite, at an event in Sweden. They are fantastic. In an earlier Basel Tattoo they do a great, crowd-pleasing rendition of Riverdance. They're all on here.

The Band of the Royal Marines are one of our top military bands. The Royal Marines - sea sailors- were founded in 1664 and have seen active service ever since. The Royal Marines motto translates as ' On land, on sea' but thir e other motto has become the personal motto of Marines throughout the world - Semper Fidelis - (semper fie) - means always loyal and indicates a marine's loyalty to and support of all his/her fellow marines.😎

This was a recording of a broadcast from a german TV Station, hence the narration in German - note the "hr", meaning "hessischer Rundfunk"/hessian broadcasting service. But as commentators usually are, you did not miss much, he was only explaining what songs were being played. As for suggestions, the Royal Marines Band has a lot of amazing stuff, also a live youtube channel. Personally, I like it best when they take on the more modern titles, but all their performances are pretty amazing.

The Royal Marines have five bands and they’re all rather excellent. The RM drums and bugles have always been extremely good, they had to be as they were used for signalling aboard ship in the days of sail. I believe the leopard skins protect the uniforms from wear and tear because the drums are so large and bulky.

Marines buglers were used aboard capital ships usually with the senior officers on the bridge to pipe hands to action stations or change of watch etc during ww2 .These young Marine bands men were no more than boys payed as a junior marine but expected to stand at their posts should the ship go into action. This is illustrated in the film 'Battle of River Plate '

Not quite. Royal Marines are rather the equivalent of what's the army's Paras (though not comparable), as both have their heritage from the commandos during ww2. Army's special forces would be the SAS with the Royal Navy's counterpart being the SBS, which is mostly manned with Royal Marines anyways.

Whilst I agree that the Commandos are an awesome fighting force I think you may have overlooked The Special Boat Service of the Royal Navy. Quote from Wikipedia “(they are) the sister unit of the British Army 22nd Special Air Service…the SBS has traditionally been manned mostly by Royal Marine Commandos”. The SBS were under command of the Commandant General Royal Marines but in 2001 command was transferred to the Commander in Chief Fleet.

Bandies, as they are known in the Royal Navy, double as stretcher bearers in combat zones. On the SS Uganda during the Falklands in 1982, they performed heroics, not just on board the hospital ships but also ashore. Plus, they are, by far, the best military band in the world.
