@@flyingferret-Airsoft Just enough to shatter the canopy to allow the ejector seat to exit the aircraft without the risk of causing severe head injuries to the aircrew (even with a helmet there is still the risk of severe concussion). Some older fighter aircraft used a different design whereby explosive charges blew off the entire canopy assembly, frame and all, rather than simply shattering the transparent part. Anyone remember that scene from Top Gun when Goose dies because he collided with the canopy after having to eject? The design used in the Hawk and almost all other aircraft used by the RAF nowadays significantly reduces the risk of that happening.

The Red Suits are pilots: the blue suits are engineering. The planes used are actually highly maneuverable trainers which if used for purpose would have an instructor and a trainee - so two seats. It appears that while ferrying from gig to gig, a blue suit sits in the back to assess any issues that might arise. It is doubtful that two people would be in a plane during an acrobatic performance as mid air crashes have occurred and you don't want to lose two people. There is also some good stuff floating around YT regarding women RAF pilots from the second world war. They were used as ferry pilots delivering aircraft to squadrons from as far away as Canada. Many of these women had more "Types" and hours on their log books than some front line pilots. It is fascinating to hear some elderly granny in a knitted two piece extolling the virtues of a Spitfire or some other aircraft. These were some brave ladies as they were delivering, as yet unarmed planes, and only had evasion as a defense. Look them up, they deserve to be remembered.

8:50 - The ‘pattern’ on the canopy glass (windshield) is actually detonation cord. The Hawk aircraft the Red Arrows use do not eject the entire canopy like the majority of fighter aircraft. Instead, when the ejection seats are activated, that cord inside the canopy detonates and shatters the canopy glass, allowing the seats to cleanly escape the aircraft.

It's a smallish river valley surrounded by hills. They fly so low down the river that they remove the masts (mostly as a precaution, I'm sure) from some of the larger moored ships before the show. And because it's completely surrounded by hills you never know where they are going to pop up next. So you get that 'arrival' experience many, many time in one display. 🙂 It's also one of the few places (in the UK, at least) where you can actually watch some of the display looking at them from above.

RAF pilots must meet these criteria to apply for selection to the Red Arrows: - Have a minimum of 1,500 flying hours. - Have completed a frontline, operational tour. - Be assessed as being above average in their flying role. A shortlist of up to nine applicants are examined during a thorough selection week, this is normally held near the end of the current team's training period in the Spring. The candidates are put through a gruelling flying test, formal interview, media test and peer assessments. Up to three new pilots are chosen each year to replace the three that have finished their tour. The Team Leader must have completed a three-year tour as a team pilot earlier in their career and is appointed in a separate selection process. Once they have finished their tour with the team - usually three years in total - they will return to operational, training, staff duties or other roles in the Royal Air Force. Training for the team starts at the end of the display season in the autumn, This is when the team switches pilots with their replacements. During the time the new pilots ( Reds - 2,3&4) first start with only Red 1 and as the weeks go on they introduce more and more of the team until they are at their 9 ship. Reds 6 to 9 form the more dynamic parts of the display and thus they are all at least 2nd year pilots. Red 5 is also normally a 2nd year pilot so they can help Red 1 with training the new pilots and be the leaders 2nd pair of eyes. Red 6 and 7 are also known as the Synchro pair which do the head ons. Red 6 leads the pair and when it's time for Red 6, who is always in their 3rd and final year of the team they are replaced by Red 7 the following season. Red 7 then Picks out of the new pilots at the end of the season to be their Red 7 for the following season. This training then normally continues up to around April/May which normally ends with the team in the last few months going on something they call Operation Spring Hawk where they travel to Cyprus or Greece and spend a few months with the better weather to come up to show standard. During all training the team flies around 3 times a day and this all ends with 2 display test to be awarded with their PDA (Public Display authority) which is something every display team in the RAF must achieve to fly for the public in displays. This is needed every year and for every team including, The battle of Britain memorial flight, Chinook display and typhoon display teams. Teams do not need a PDA for flypasts. An airshow season in the UK is normally from May - September. The pilots and ground crew don't wear their red and blue flying suits until they achieve their PDA and officially become the reds for that year. for training they are in normal RAF green flying suits. The only members of the team that don't follow the same sort of requirements are those of Red 10 and Red 11. Red 10 is the teams ground safety officer and road manager, they are the ones in constant communication with Red 1 from the ground to make them aware of constant changes at the display location (like wind direction, obstacles ect...)and that the Team are flying correctly. it's also their job to do the commentary for the display. Outside of this they often fly the spare jet between locations and often fly the teams photographer. Red 11 Is the teams Big boss and is responsible for them on a squadron level. Red 1 maybe the leader and the boss of the Pilots, But Red 11 Is the boss of Red 1, the rest of the pilots and everyone else on the squadron including the engineering team.

The 'flags' on the front are covers for the pitot tubes (the thing that measure air speed), they have to be removed before flight. Top Gun is not just a movie, it's the name of the training school based at Miramar. The F35 fighter is a joint project developed by the US, UK, Germany and others. Our company was involved in the construction of one of the F35 development centres at BAE systems here in the UK 10 years ago. Edit: The propellers on the Atlas looked weird because the were in a position know as fully feathered, each of the blades rotate into a more normal looking configuration when in use. Happy to answer questions: The symbol on the side of the aircraft is the squadron badge, that of the Royal Air Force Aerobatics Team "The reds" fly typically in a formation of 9 Hawk T1 aircraft, a two seater trainer aircraft. Being a trainer aircraft there's a spare seat in the back, so of "the Blues", the Engineers in blue flight suits, the lucky ones will be assigned to a pilot and accompany them on flights. It's a perk of the job! The wavy lines on the canopy are an explosive cord used when ejecting from the aircraft, as an additional safety measure to make sure that a pilot doesn't go straight through the glass. The flags on the retractable nose pylon are an aid to determine wind direction and strength. By comparison, the USAF dwarfs the RAF, we simply don't have enough transport aircraft like the A400s to spare to accompany the aerobatic team. Pilots usually fly three seasons with the Red Arrows if they make it through selection, with a season being a full year. Training in Cyprus and in the UK during the autumn and winter, with them usually flying displays around the UK and occasionally overseas! After their three seasons are up they return to active duty.

There was a rather famous airline crash caused by hornets nesting inside the Pitot after the plane had been parked for a couple of days with no cover

Long ago when I was an Air Cadet the red arrows flew a different type of aircraft, they flew the Folland Gnat a very small training aircraft. One base I visited I saw the coat of arms being hand painted on the side of a Gnat. Expense has cut the display teams down a lot over the years and the number of displays too. There were the Black Arrows Hawker Hunters, the Red Pelicans Jet Provosts, the Yellow Jacks Folland Gnats. These are a few that I remember, living near an airport I got to see most displays from my back garden twice as they practiced the day before. The Black Arrows flew a display formation of 22 Hawker Hunters, an impressive sight when your'e six years old.

@PBFootyfan3 жыл бұрын
There was indeed a single seat version, the Hawk 200. It achieved only limited export success performing the light attack role. The two seat Hawk performs the advanced training role, having the ability to carry missiles, rocket launchers, bombs and a gun pack for weapons training. It retains the ability to perform the light attack and airfield defense roles albeit without many of the more complex avionics a fully fledged fighter bomber would have.

I live about an hour from their current base, and when they move base in about a year's time, I will live under an hour from them. A few times, I've been on journeys around Lincolnshire and had the good luck to see them doing practice displays. One time, I was on my way home from a day out by car and spent about 15 minutes of the said journey directly under a full 9-ship practice with them passing very low over the car. The spectacle, the noise, the precision manoeuvres, the fact I wasn't expecting it made it a spine-tinglingly unforgettable moment. My goosebumps had goosebumps. I didn't know which window to look out of from one moment to the next! Love them, and I've had the honour of spending the day with them and seeing a practice display from their airbase. They're the pride of Lincolnshire. Hats off to them. Their motto is 'Eclat', meaning 'excellence'. Which they are, every single display.

The Red Arrows became the official RAF aerobatic display team following a number of previous teams. One of the most notable ones was the 'Black Arrows'. I believe they still hold the record for largest formation 'loop' of 22 Hawker Hunter jets.

12:35 the "flags" are "labels" for protective gear of the sensors. The flags are to make them visible so they won't be forgotten to be taken off before flight. edit: Seeing any aerobatic display on video is nothing like seing it live. The US formations don't fly much around europe, so i haven't seen them. I have however seen the Frecce Tricolore, Patroulle France, Patroulle swiss, Turkish stars, Russian Knights, A portugese aerobatic team who's name i sadly forgot. And i have seen the Red Arrows once. What set them apart was that there was absolutely no pause in the display. It was times so each time the bigger formation "left" for regrouping, immediately the time was filled. And the member of them talking to the crowd over big speakers (all of the european do that) was great fun too. (Has been years since i was at an airshow) Additionally, i have seen a full mirror display (one plane is upside down close to the other one doing the same thing like they would stick together.) of gliders (sailplane?) which was impressive like the jet displays. (One would think that the gliders would be boring to look at, but they weren't) And least i forget: the swedish airforce used to do aerobatic display flights with a C130 with one guy in white in the open rear waving to the crowd ect. Won't ever forget about that!

Hi the zig-zag on the canopy you asked about is actually the “mini detonation cord” which is blown as the ejection seat is operated by either of the two seats. This is to shatter the canopy so there is no obstruction rising out of the cockpit.

The zigzag lines on the canopy (windshield) are MDC. Miniature Deotonating Cord. When the Pilot pullls the ejection handle, the cord explodes and shatters the canopy so he can pass through it in his/her ejection seat. It can be blown manually from the outside of the aircraft when it is on the ground by the crash crew if the pilot is unable to eject so the crash crew can gain access to the cockpit.

In the UK it is possible to arrange and fly last by the Red Arrows when they are on route to a major event. The team can adjust their flight plan (if it is roughly in the right direction) over your location and give you a time. You just have to plan you event accordingly. A favourite of village fetes and weddings. If you like, book a spring holiday in Cyprus. The Red Arrows spend about a fortnight there pre display season training at RAF Akrotiri . I don't know if anyone answered your questions but the Arrows pilots do 3 years on the team with 3 leaving and 3 joining each year. There are some good documentaries on the selection process and on the training. Selection and Training usually takes place in Cyprus over winter so they have good weather. A Season is normally the UK Summer appearing at Air Shows and displays but also doing Fly pasts at Major Events like Sporting finals or Royal Events. It can also incorporate foreign tours like this US tour - they will travel to different countries depending on where they are invited to go - maybe to help celebrate events their hosts are putting on. I spent 12 years in the RAF so saw them many times, also my last year was spent at Scampton/Waddington so I would see them practising daily. They still amaze me and I never tire of watching them.

Going to see the Blue Angels in KC this weekend. The artistry of the Red Arrows is amazing. The Blues (and Air Force Thunderbirds) seem to focus more on precision. The "Red" jets are BAE Hawks...which are primarily trainers...although there is an actual fighter version that was sold to several countries. The US Navy actually uses a "version" of the Hawk called the T-45 Goshawk as a primary trainer. Nice reaction video. I'm sure by this point most of the commenters have answered your comments. If you have others don't hesitate to ask with a reply to this comment. FYI: The Canadians also have a jet demonstration team called the Snowbirds...their show is closer to what the Red Arrows perform.
