One of the features i always liked, that isnt actually mentioned in the video, is that the guilder notes had a form of braille on them. Something the euro appears to lack.

The Gulden was way better than the euro! and a little history fact is that the Dutch 'Daalder' was the reason the Dollar is called the Dollar in America😉
@rmyikzelf5604
@rmyikzelf5604 10 ай бұрын
The actual etymology for dollar is a bit diffuse in that it is an angliced version of the German word thaler or the Bohemian tolar, a silver coin from the 16th century or the Dutch word daler/daalder. In short it's a Germanic word.

The series of Gulden Banknotes as shown in this video were my favorite versions. Later, just a few years before the introduction of the euro, "5", "10", "25" "100" and "1000" bills were replaced again with an updated design. But those were not as attractive to me as the older version and the "50" and "250" bills. That last one the "250" I think was the most beautiful looking banknote. I sure would love to have them again over the failing Euro!

I actually have a bath towel in my cupboard that's printed like a 1000 Guilder bill, with Spinoza on it. My mom bought it in the late 80's, I think, when the bill was still in circulation. Hmmm they didn't go into the markings in the lower left corner of the bills... (the dots, triangle etc.) Those were there so blind people could tell the value of the bill easily. And honestly I'm baffled to see it on notes from the 70's (we all know people with disabilities have been left out way to often way to long) Those markings were raised so you could feel them really well

Funny that the designer used a cartoon style to draw the portraits of those Dutch VIPs. Having grown up with those green, blue and red notes, I thought that was how portraits were supposed to look. When we first visited foreign countries on our holidays, I was shocked to learn that foreign money had dead (looking) people on the notes. Andrew Jackson was in command of the American forces at the Battle of New Orleans. I saw a pretty cool movie back when I was a kid. I collect currency, my guldens are holy to me, i had so much more to spend when we had guldens as a kid. the only ones i miss the 1000, its still worth like 500 euro at the bank. i got 4 buckets of guldens, and like 60 old gold/silves ones. A friend took dollar bills back for me, they are boring... but they got something at the same time. Fun fact, when u visit the ardennes, you can find silver dollars in the ground, please leave them there, they where laid there by familymembers after the war for their friends/family lost in ww2. My favorite banknotes are the 1860-1946 especially the german ones, immagine walking around with a book as a wallet, some of them are that big. and artwork on them is better then now i feel. USA also has some artistic dollar bills, but they are highly collectable and insanely priced.

What I miss the most nowadays is not the bills but the Dutch coins. The we very distinctive. You could easily see if you had a 5, 10, 25, 50 cent, 1 guilder or 2,5 guilder coin. (alslo called a daalder). Now, with the Euro, I'm struggeling to see if it's a 10, 20 or 50 eurocent coin. They look so alike. Even with the one euro and two eurocoin I struggle. The one Euro has a silvercoloured center with a goldcoloured egde and the 2 Euro has goldcoloured center with a silvercoloured egde. But they are almost even big. The daalder was way bigger than the 1 guilder coin. Very easy to see the difference.
@therealdutchidiot
@therealdutchidiot 8 ай бұрын
From what I recall they weren't only very distinct in size, but also in colour. The 5 gulden coin was a heavy one with a copper, almost golden finish. The 10 cents (dubbeltje) was a very small coin, and things like that. I wish euro coins were more distinct in that way, but at least the Dutch coins have some unique features on the sides of them (something the EU never regulated, so the DNB went nuts with it for some coins).

And got the "United" right! (mostly.) "European Union" is what you're looking for. Yep, we all had to give up our own local money and switch to Euros, except the UK, who of course had to get some exceptions, to then go on and grumble about how mean the EU is ... Meanwhile, it's nice to be able to hop over to the Netherlands or France or Ireland and not have to worry about getting the local currency. But yep, those Gulden looked beautiful.

A snipe is a wading/field bird with great camouflage. Their defense is staying put in place in high growth and not stir until you nearly step on them. You'll never know they're there. When they do take flight they fly very erratic, making it difficult to shoot them. Hence the term "sniper" for excellent marksmen. When your granny sends you of to "go and hunt snipes" she is NOT sending you off to do something impossible, but something extremely difficult which will take a long time.

GULDEN not Hilde lmao (English: Guilder). I think many of your viewers never seen this as it was only introduced 21 years ago as the euro was introduced in 2002, not 50 or 60 years ago lol. We had al sorts of nicknames for them (from most modern to old if applicable) 5 cent coin: Stuiver 10 cent coin: Dubbeltje and Bas/Beissie 25 cent coin Kwartje (quarter) or Heitje or Maffie 1 Gulden: Piek - pegel -pegulant 1,50 guilder (discontinued in 1847) Daalder 2,50 coin: Rijksdaalder or knaak 10 gulden bill: Joet (originating from the Jidish Jod, the 10th letter of their alphabet) 25 Gulden bill: Geeltje *named ofter the original bill color which was yellow, later it became red but the name stuck) 50: Gulden bill: Zonnebloem (sunflower, after the image on the bill) 100 Gulden bill: Meier (originating from the Jidish word for 100 Mei'oh) (last version also called Snip after the bird on the bill) 250 gulden bill: Vuurtoren (lighthouse, also named after the image on the bill. both the 50 and 250 Gulden bills were the last additions. the 50 was added in1982, the 250 in 1985) 1000 Gulden bill: Rooie Rug/Rug (red back as in your backside) named after the color of the original bill, also Krant (newspaper) as it was a HUGE bill. Some coin names that originated from coins that were discontinued early 1800's but still have a meaning in Dutch sayings even people have no idea what coins they talk about Duit: used in the saying "een Duit in het zakje doen" (putting a Duit in the bag). a Duit was 1/8th of a Stuiver (5ct), the saying stems from Church where people would put a duit in the collection/donor basket/bag Oortje (little ear): used in the saying "Zijn laatste oortje versnoepen" *eating his last ear) used for a quarter stuiver. The origin of the word oortje has actually nothing to do with an ear, it is a very old-dietsch word that has lost it's meaning many many moons ago

What I mostly remember about the old Gulden is that the banknotes of any value over 50 were rare. I don't remember ever actually seeing a 1000 gulden note, the 250 gulden lighthouse one just once or twice. And the last 5 or 10 years they replaced the 5 gulden notes with these small but very thick yellow copper coins.

True, I remember having twelve (!!) 1000 gulden banknotes only once, that was when I bought my first new car! Never had tjose again. The 250 gulden lighthouse I had a few times, the were rare. The 100 gulden banknote was common though, and the 50 gulden banknote was used a lot. And you sais it, the 5 gulden coin. Those were introduced because the 5 gulden banknotes wore out very quickly. Would I have the gulden back again? No way, the Euro is very convienent and can be used almost everywere in Europe. No exchange rates etc., what we have when entering the UK.

It is good that the bank did NOT saw the fingerprints. That way they looked great. Because otherwise they would have been boring. I bet the US has these strict rules and look at the result. On the Netherlands, the majority would not care and even find it funny. It is a fine balance between "normaal" and strange. Also know that the larger the amount is, the larger the paper is. That way you can not use it for an other note. e.g. use a 5 note and turn it into a 100 note.

20:10 a bond is a form of loan, rather than currency. A bond is when you loan money to a company or the state, with the promise of being repaid that bond plus interest in a fixed amount of time. So claiming a bond is essentially providing a loan to someone else.

The bank notes also had a thicker layer of paint in the bottom left corner, each note with their own texture (for instance: 10 guilders note had 3 dots, 25 guilders had 2 dots, and the 50 guilders note (later production date than the "Erfaters") had a triangle). Hoi, alles goed met je I came across this on Wikipedia Sweden The very first European banknote with a fixed value indication comes from Sweden from the first Central Bank and referred to a deponent, a deposit or an interest and is called a 'credit note'. For this note, a thick white handmade paper was used with the word BANCO as a watermark. It can be viewed in the museum under the name 'Palmstrucher'. The first three digits were printed and the last digit was added by handwriting and paper money only really gained value from 1804 onwards and nice that you show us Dutch pride > that was still money that we were all proud of we had hoped that this would also happen with the euro

Each country that has the euro produces it's own design coin. The belgian coins have the belgian king's head on the front, the old Dutch ones have the Dutch queen (the new ones have the king). the german coins have an eagle, the symbol of German sovereignty, the coins from malta have a maltese cross on them etc. It's really cool cus you can own a coin and find out it's from the other side of europe and it's also cool to collect :)

It's easy to pull off too, because unlike paper money coins don't need security features. They just are what they are. Put another way: counterfitting them would be more expensive than the coin value, because you don't have the benefits of bulk manufacture.

Hi Charlie, great video again. Check the 50 Euro bill. Bright yellow! You don't need drugs with that shit. I worked with the international police, with conterfeit money, and the 250 Euro bill has three names hidden in from the maker. His daughter, his wife and.......his mistress. Your face would look fantastic. Better than the old f..... we have now.

I do miss those banknotes because of their design, the euro notes are ok though. Also well designed with the aspect of not being connected to a specific country, so any country can join without feeling set behind by having to look at another country’s symbols on the money. What still annoys me though is the 1 2 5 denominations of the euro. The guilder (gulden) was based on quarters, 1, 5, 10, 25 cent coins and 1 and 2,5 guilder coins and from that the notes were aranged in the same way from 5 guilders up to a thousand. I still don’t get it, if you design a new monetary system you opt for the most efficient system, don’t you? It was proven in those times that a system based on quarters needs a lot less coins and banknotes but they still chose for the antiquated imperial system of 1 2 5 … because most of Europe used that

About the US bills: American paper currency comes in seven denominations: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. The United States no longer issues bills in larger denominations, such as $500, $1,000, $5,000, and $10,000 bills. But they are still legal tender and may still be in circulation.

I think that a former president/king/hero could be fine on a bill. Why always look at the one thing they did that wasn't to our present liking and forget all other things they did? You can't change history ... it made us what we are today.

Aha, so that's why Germany still had portraits of Adolf H. and Joseph G. on their paper money, until the introduction of the Euro. Not.

I don't understand why they are talking about banks all the time. Surely banks don't print money? Governments do, through av governmental institution, like in my country "myntverket" a government agency responsible for the country's currency production. And then, in the end, the printing itself is done by a private company selected by the government through very strict laws of quotations.

Okay, we have probably similar central banks then. I think the parliament elects the the central bank council and that council hires the the steering committee of the bank to run it in favour for a stable economy. The council also decides how the money shall look and whatnot.@@rmyikzelf5604
