This serial was written by Spike Milligan and a Gentleman. The Gentleman being none other than a certain Gerald Wiley with authentic raspberries blown by none other than Del Boy himself - David Jason. It's a shame that due to copyright it's hard to come by full episodes. The format barely changed in 16 years. Each episode has spoof news items from the newsdesk, sketches with both of them, a weekly continuing serial ( a new story every series) a guest singer, a solo sketch from Ronnie B normally using his mastery of word play, an armchair monologue from Ronnie C that was a deliberately corny shaggy dog story that got it's humour from RC constantly going off from his story in distractingly wild tangents, an elaborate musical finale ( often with the two of them in drag ) and each show finishing back at the newsdesk. It was a format that worked, and it worked for 16 years with it only stopping when Ronnie B decided to retire. Pure Magic!!!

The writer Terence 'Spike' Milligan was a gunner in the Royal Artillery during WWII, and arguably lost his marbles at one point, being haunted by terrible dreams and later manic-depressive phases that made him both erratic and enormously productive as a comedy writer. Much of his humour was developed during his time in entertainment troupes in the army and later in the old music hall tradition of comedy acts as that style faded away post-WWII. In novels (Puckoon), in early short films (The Case of the Mukkinese Battlehorn, Postman's Knock) he worked with others that shared and complemented his risky style on radio (the Goon Show). Later his memoirs and character roles in numerous films as well as writing for stage, television (the 'Q' series Q8, etc.) and many appearances on comedy or talk shows kept him in the lime-light almost until his death. He was one of many people who wrote for the Two Ronnies; these episodic films within a TV series were one of several that kept the Ronnie's popularity high for many years.

So many of the sight gags in this come from the simple problems of shooting things out of sequence, needing stand-ins for other actors, even shooting two visits on different days in the same day at the hospital location. The Monty Python guys adapted this to their instances of characters noticing that they'd gone from 'on film' to 'in the studio' and back again in one scene, probably shot weeks apart.

Peter Sellers, obviously, went on to have a great film career, Michael Bentine went into comedic children's programmes and Harry Secombe became a regular on UK TV screens, either singing or in religious shows. Spike Milligan had some great series, the Monty Python guys said The Goon Show was among their main influences, especially Spike. He's actually in Life of Brian because he just happened to be in the country when they were filming, he buggered off before they could use him more though.

I was a young lad of the tender age of eight when this was aired... Although we tuned in (as a family) each week, I must admit this serial absolutely terrified me and gave me nightmares. Nevertheless I loved it

Thanks for reacting to this. Do read the credits at the beginning of the episodes. The names are all jokes. It is classic British comedy and very silly. It is so random that it borders on surrealism. I love the idea that the Victorians were so prim and proper that a mere rude noise could shock them so much that they could keel over and die from it . Yet it is all so harmless really.

Spike Milligan was one of the Goons and their radio show in the 1950's was totally different to any of the conventional comedy series of that era. The Goons was the inspiration for the later Monty Python TV Series. My favourite Spike Milligan sketch was 'What time is it Eccles?' which is so surreal. It might be something different for you to react to.

Agreed, it's such a good sketch that I've got it written down on a piece of paper!!🤣😂

Even the names in the pre credits are fake. Norma Stitz stuck in my mind when i was young. Now too lol

I love the two Ronnies and even as a child in the 70s and 80s I loved watching them and in particular the Christmas special. funnily enough I was scared of the phantom raspberry blower when I watched it back then. There have only been three celebrities that made me feel very sad when they died and they were Bob Marley, Ronnie Barker and very recently Bette White.

When the Ronnies did a series celebrating their previous shows and featuring their and viwer's favourites, Raspberry Blower was chosen as the mini series. There was a huge cheer from the audience when the "Chopper Films" appeared. It was by far the most popula rof their little mini-series, which they did every year. They did The Worm That Turned and several with Charley Farley and PIggy Malone.

The raspberry noise maker was Sir David Jason who would appear with Ronnie Barker in Porridge and Open All Hours.
