@JJLA When you watched the rugby explanation video, it mentioned rucks and scrums. However, there is a legal third mass player event called a MAUL. Normally generated from a tackle, if the tackled player stays on his feet, members of his team can move in to support/push him forward towards the opposition goalline with the opposition pushing him the other way. During all this chaos, the ball can still be released to another player to continue the possession, handy for trying to break away with half the opponents focussed on the maul. If the ball carrier for any reason drops to the ground and the ball is grounded, he has to release the ball and this can then become a ruck.

Also (to confuse things further) a tactic is to rotate the maul (rolling maul), since opposition players can only attack the maul from their side, it makes defending it more difficult as they rotate around to the attacking side.

An official scrum is formed as a set piece and is limited to specific players, forwards, if one happens more organically it's a maul or a ruck and they're a bit more flexible

The man-bra is a monitor that records many things, including heart-rate, distance run, and an accelerometer to measure the intensity of collisions. It's basically a black box for rugby players. I recall a doctor for the England 7's team saying that from the amount data it collects, they can determine whether or not a player might have a cold coming on.

Just an activity monitor really. My Garmin watch shows when I'm run down e.g. caught a cold. As you say, they spot it before you even realise. These are just more dedicated for recording specific performance over the game period/training.

As an aside the numbers on the shirt always refer to a specific position, rather than the range of number you can choose from for certain positions in American Football

It would be good if you could watch a full game (not highlights) of Rugby to see how it works. South Africa vs France from the recent Rugby World cup would be a good one. (don't watch the final though as a first timer, it was a bit boring)

@4:09 It's a common formation called "the Maul". (literally a standing Ruck) A Scrum being something else. Every team does that at one point or another and multiple times during a game. The peculiar part here is, they send the entire team in, which is not common at all. Nice move though, overpowered the defenders. @5:51 He tried to kick it out, you can ear the bell sounding the end of official time, that's overtime now, if the ball is live, the game goes on until action stops and you want, as the winner to end the game by doing so. . He messed up, but ended well though.. @10:08 Total opposite of cockiness, humility and great heart, he gave it to his buddy, probably to help him reach a new personal scoring record. Just a brain fart.

He kicked it 'the wrong way' because the gong went to say that time was up. If your team is in the lead, all you need to do is yo kick the ball into to touch to end the game. It doesn't matter where you kick as long as it goes into touch, however the ball carrier 'missed'

Try, not touchdown. The name comes from the fact originally you didn't score points for it. Putting the ball down over the line allowed you to 'try' and get points by kicking through the posts. So it gave you a 'try' to score. They updated the rules later on to give points for it but kept the name try. The kick after eventually then became the conversion, because you could convert the 5 point score to the full 7 points.

Unlike American Football the kicker in Rugby isn’t a special player, they are part of the normal play. A kicker like Dan Biggar who was twitching a lot is full of adrenaline because they were involved in the play before the kick (in some cases they may even be converting their own try). There’s a 90 second limit for a conversion, 60 for a penalty for the shot to be taken. They sometimes need it to calm down from whatever they were doing before that, and catch their breath.

The time allowed for kicking is way way too long. Given that it's should take only 5 seconds to convert from between the posts, 30 seconds should be more than enough and would increases the relative value of scoring under the posts.

The time to calm down argument might have some relevance if they hadn't often had the best part of a minute of standing around while officials check legitimacy of the try before the clock is started.

The Welsh try against the All Blacks wasn't a scrum. It was a rolling maul, and it's completely different with it own set of rules.

On a different note. I am English (British, if you want to call it). We have a lot of bad history!!! But.! In modern history. (Digression. The song Zombie by the Irish band. The cranberries) to me is a sad story that they try to tell. The government under Margret thatcher (and other prime ministers) created a war over Ireland. That’s why there’s a northern and Southern Ireland. Many people died. The IRA (Irish Republic Army) fought again the British government, (bombed places in the uk), that and religion (very long story). But this song is about the un-told story. Listen to the song lyrics. RIdiculous decision by a small-minded, self-important referee (1:45) to instantly give a red card to the player who lifted him up in a playful way. Even a yellow would be a bit harsh, although perhaps merited on reflection and to discourage future repeats.

Respect of the officials is a major part of rugby though and lifting him up like that was a big no no. I agree a red is over the top, but I think it's as you say to send a message to other players not to mess with the officials.
