It's a poem by Henk Nijp, it works in frisian, kinda works in English i guess? when i cant come up with melodies eyes groping in the dark tinnitus affects the eardrums do you want to be my tambour-mêtre? then we walk with high knees on the beat on the inner paths of Methuselah take me down the fairways where we fished, swam the sun scorched our backs where we robbed duck nests in the reeds wet socks slapped against the fence. startled cattle in the pasture from heavy weather in the near evenings the crackling copper from the flash then the dark thump of the drum a few seconds of fear, slowly approaching the next morning, nests were blown into the shore the light tone of snail tracks on the concrete you step like a stoic rooster again correctly indicate the measure throw the wand up high so that he shines in the sun I tap the tingles on the triangle as if we were walking on the taptoe

I as an Amsterdammer lived in Lelystad for most of my life, but lived in Leeuwarden/ Friesland for about 7 years. The funny thing is most Leeuwarders quite commonly claim: ""Leeuwarden isn't Friesland, Friesland was built around Leeuwarden"". I've hiked through Friesland so much and it is a beautiful province, I can understand the Fryssian language quite well for a "Hollander"". Reading is much harder, and the few things I can't understand from the context I just ask what they mean, but that leads to them no longer being able to speak Frysian for much longer. Yeah, it is true I have dared them so often to speak Frysian with me and they just automatically go speak Dutch very soon. If you are interested in Friesland a little more, look into two typically Frysian sports, Fierljeppen and Kaatsen. Friesland is beautiful and has a very special place in my heart, but Franeker in particular.

I've been there many times and I can confirm that this tower is indeed leaning much more than the tower of Pisa. And when you stand in front of it, it's actually quite bizar how far it's leaning, definately impressive. Leeuwarden is a stunningly beautiful place and one of my favourite cities in Netherlands.

Im am a proud Frisian! My family can be traced hundreds of years back. There are some really good videos on KZbin explaining the history of the landscape ( really interesting with the Terpen and such) and the history of the Frisian people ( lots of Viking stuff for instance) The language is also interesting. Its totally different from Dutch. I actually grew up bilingual, and most of the schools in Friesland teach Frisian as well as Dutch. This video doesnt represent Friesland very well in my opinion, it just gave a very small glimpse, but that is probably my Frisian pride speaking 😆

Shells are used as semi-paving for the paths. This is cheaper than gravel or stones and of course better than clay or sand (dirty feet when wet)

the poop is from sheep that roam freely over and behind the dike, and yes they are called sausages "dry sausages sometimes only dried sometimes also smoked or sometimes just fresh", and we use shells a lot in the north to pave walking and cycling paths because it is cheaper than paving or gravel

I've been to the Netherlands twice in the 1990s. One day we took a guided tour bus in and around Amsterdam. I can remember, that the guide showed us and told us about some more architectonic oddities in the Netherlands. What I can recall (hopefully correctly) is a tower of a church (or something) with a pointy roof. The tower was straight, but the roof was strangely slanted due to bad workmanship. And than there was a pretty big bridge over a really tiny stream. That was because the bridge was planned according to an old map, were said little stream was big and was used for transporting goods and people with actual sizable boats. Nobody checked if that's still the case and obviously nobody cared during the construction of the bridge.
@jancvdweide6646
@jancvdweide6646 9 сағат бұрын
the oldehove sank during construction because there is no normal foundation underneath, but it is built on cowhides, during construction they saw that it was already sinking and tried to compensate for that by going straight up from that point, which is why there is a small bend in it just below halfway up the tower, but when they reached its current height they stopped building and brought it to this height, tens of years later they made a wooden construction on the roof that would give the shape and height of the point that would come on it , officially a ship (church body) was also to be built on the tower, but due to the high costs this never happened (although the shape of the ship that was to come can be seen in the current paving in colored stones), which is why they turned it into a cemetery at the time, which later continued to exist under the paving of the parking lot that was built on it (which unfortunately had to make way for an underground parking garage). a nice story is "in WW2 the Nazis did not dare to remove the bells from the tower because they were made to believe that the tower would fall over" as told to me by my grandfather, a true Leeuwarden resident

But the footage of the waddenzee, lauwersmeer and so forth, brings more recent memories. it is a very beautiful area. You can find a lot of old small churches an old towns there. Vere old villages and loving memories about the bike tours i made there. And if you get the chance visit my aunt in Morra!

Charlie if you ever been stubborn, you can blame it on the Frisian blood of your ancestors. My grandmother was Frisian, so I share the same habbit :) I love the north, it has a few cities for the city kind of things, but you don't have to travel that far to be in a complete different world with lots of nature. BTW the first city with 'stadsrechten' ('cityrights, which were mandatory to call yourself a city) was Stavoren in Friesland. Oh and besides cows there are some other specific animals from Frisia. There are Frisian horses, but they also have very rare dogbreeds, the Frisian Stabyhoun and the Wetterhound.

I was born in Amsterdam, in a family living in Amsterdam for at least 300 years (from what I researched). Traditionally they never travelled outside of Amsterdam and therefor knew very little about birds. So, the old traditional Amsterdammers had 3 kinds of birds: duiven (pigeons) and two kind of other birds. sijsies (siskins) and drijfsijsies. - floating siskins. ducks, swans and all other birds swimming in the canals are drijfsijsies. flying birds like sparrows are just sijsies :) Of course, that's humor to make up for not knowing the different kinds of birds. Very silly humor, but hey - it's related to the video and not typically Dutch, but only applicable to the old traditional Amsterdam people :D

The Oldehove leans more than the one in Pisa, from another angle more from the side is a better vieuw, the poo on the sea dike is from sheep they wander around there, Fryslân, the frisian name, has woods, grasland, even a kind of desert and a lot of lakes, even a cliff, for suchs a small plot of land the variety is great, and dont forget all the ancient villages and city's the oldest part of the church in my village is from the 13th century. Droge worst, dried sausages are a big thing in the north every province has it's own variety, it is almost impossible to find artisanal dried sausages in the rest of the Netherlands, here every butcher makes them even some in supermarkets. Btw i wonder how late they breakfast, because the fishmonger in front of the Albert Hein opens at 10:00am, they were already in Leeuwarden they didnt need to drive anymore why they edited that way baffles me.
