The 5 Tracy sons (both in screenwriting and in storyline) are named after project mercury astronauts Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Gordon Cooper and Alan Sheppard.

Fun fact. The first few episodes, including this one. Were originally only 24 minutes long. But after the guy (name I can’t remember), who was funding the series. Watched the promo of this episode. He decided that they needed to lengthen the episodes to 50 minutes to flesh out the story. As he felt with the high production costs, these seemed more like mini movies than just a simple episode. As a result, the attempt to get a man aboard to disarm the bomb was included. As were additional footage for the few episodes already complete. Sadly, despite the shows popularity, and Gerry Anderson’s intentions to continue producing the show. The financier demanded that now scrap the show. And produce something new. Hence the creation of Captain Scarlet.

Fun fact: The Tracy brothers were named after the first five astronauts in space: Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Virgil Grissom, Gordon Cooper and Alan Shephard. In the Thunderbirds timeline, Jeff Tracy himself was one of the first astronauts on the moon, but sadly abandoned his career to care for his sons when his wife died in a major accident...which prompted Jeff to set up International Rescue!

They messed up the continuity near the end: They do "operation cover up" when the doctor comes in, changing the portraits to just be the boys in normal clothes, but when you cut to 2 of them sitting down playing chess, like at 50:44. You can see that the portraits above still have them in uniform.

I think the implication was that it was rigged to go bang when the landing gear was deployed on descent at the destination airport. No landing gear deployed, no boom. So instead of using the landing gear, just stick some giant industrial roller skates under it instead to act as replacement landing gear. Although if it became dislodged because the tape failed then it could go off anyway (but didn't, because Thunderbirds win, obviously!)
@georgercop
@georgercop 22 күн бұрын
I don't think that's quite it - they put the landing gear down on the x-ray flypast. It was placed, essentially, in the shock absorbers, so that when the system was compressed with the impact of landing normally, that is what would trigger the bomb. Landing on the elevator cars doesnt put that stress on the shock absorbers, as the force of landing isnt travelling the right way, so the bomb wouldn't go off.

John really had a bleak existence. Floating around in space all by himself his entire life, and his family only contact him when they want something doing urgently. Poor sod.

In the lore john is only up there for a month at a time, once a month Alan pilots Thunderbird 3 up to TB5 and docks, once there TB3's power generator charges TB5's Atomic batteries, replenishes its consumables and Alan takes over as space monitor while John pilots TB3 back to earth, he is then the pilot of TB3 for the month and they then swap again.

I had the toys and the paint has flaked off them over the years, they have a lot of grey spots on them. The interchangeable element meant that Thunderbird 2 was everyone's favourite. And the theme tune... Nostalgia... It's unusual that Blue Peter, the BBC kids show, therefore no commercials, was the one to do the build your own segment, only making sense when you factor in that at the time it was BBC that was showing reruns, not ITV, which ITC was originally affiliated with. It was years later before Neil Buchanan did a very obvious generic ripoff on Art Attack - Design Your Own Fantasy Island. If you recall them from Robot Wars, Plunderbird was originally meant as a pastiche, with the team's official name being the International Wreck Crew, and they had some early success before they changed into one of the show's heels as the standard of most of the other teams improved, and they aptly retired after Plunderbird 5. I remember a commercial that spoofed the intro: "5! 4! 3! 2! 1!" No take off. "Thunderbirds Are Go! Thunderbirds Are Go... Go, Thunderbirds!" Scott's having a tea break. "Have a Break. Have a KitKat." "Thunder... Birds... *GOOOO!* "

There is an array of Gerry Anderson shows you could get into. I used to like Captain Scarlet and Joe 90, although I mainly liked Joe 90 for the theme song. There is also Space Precinct, which is live action mixed with puppetry and animatronics.

I think the idea is that the movement of the Fireflash's undercarraige suspension is what would have set off the bomb on landing which is why landing gear up worked. Hope someone remembered to scram the reactor as soon as they were down otherwise everyone would have still been getting irradiated whilst waiting to evacuate. Nearly all of Thunderbirds logic does not hold up to any level of scrutiny. 95% of whats done is because it looks cool and I don't think anyone making it bothered to pretend otherwise.

00:42 To be specific, puppets with solenoids in them. 01:20 Oh, dear. The remastering removed a layer deliberately included. "Your strings are showing." - Peter Cook 19:12 "PAW Patrol! PAW Patrol!" 21:10 I think you were looking at the pods. 33:37 That's why they call him The Hood. 42:50 That was an error on set that was worked into the story. 49:16 That's how you know it's a real Gerry Anderson work; everything's inclined to blow-up. 52:47 The episodes were going to be only half-an-hour long with ads, but when the execs saw this pilot they immediately called for all episodes to be doubled in length. 53:32 Release order or production order?

Thunderbirds was a huge part of my childhood, my fave was always Thunderbird 2. This show is British but it's most important characters are American. The reason being that America had a very lucrative market for tv shows, Britain having such a small potential audience by comparison. But in the 70s, America was dead set against any foreign TV shows. So Gerry Anderson, creator of Thunderbirds, made all the heroes American as a way to make the show more appealing to them. Gerry Anderson created not only Thunderbirds and many other shows but also the medium it was filmed in. He invented supermarionation, marionettes with radio controlled devices in their heads to operate mouths and eyes. They also used camera tricks like filming water and smoke at a slowed down pace to make them and the models seem bigger. One of Blue Peter's most famous make and dos was the model Tracy Island. They did it again when the live action movie came out. Gerry Anderson did not approve of it. He also said he always hated the character John Tracy and loved the fact he could stick him up alone in space every episode. Which I think is odd as not he John Tracy but rarely did the Tracy boys show a lot of character anyway. Also this show inspired a real life humanitarian organization, the International Rescue Corps which helps people in the wake of disaster all over the world. How amazing is that?!

I also think you should watch the live action film from 2004. It sucks but it fun to watch the rockets and other amazing vehicles and that and seeing Tracy island to. I think that Busted song you saw on Top of the pops was based on it and why they where sing to it.

How do people seeing this for the first time find the pacing? Countless drawn out panning shots of cool looking vehicles makes my neurodivergent brain happy but I've always wandered if other people find them boring?

I have only respect for mad aerodyamicists with twin-boom fetishes, but I did find the pacing and repetition of that footage a pacing problem. I mean, it's pleasant to look at -- but might as well be still photography. There's nothing interesting in the composition or editing; it feels like hitting the brakes on the narrative, ruins the tension and tempo. And watching it now, I'm actually surprised at how much tension/suspense this corny old puppet show _does_ manage to generate! :) But appreciating the vehicle design in this show is not a neurodivergent characteristic, trust me :)
