A brilliant magician who hid it by fumbling his magic routines and giving you something at the end that you never expected and was always more magic and more fun than if the trick had been done 'properly'. He could make an audience laugh just by standing there and he threw in one-liners non-stop. A legend.

Tommy Cooper died in 1984 from a heart attack. Live on stage, and live on tv, in front of an audience of thousands. Even his assistant smiled at him as he slumped to the floor, and the audience laughed, thinking it was part of the act... It's truely sad, but I think it was a fitting end (and tribute). Don't worry Tommy. We're still laughing at you. RIP

I remember as a youngster watching him live on a tv performance, he was always so entertaining. He actually died that night, you saw him fall to the floor and thought it was part of the act and then the curtains closed with his feet showing. It was shocking but looking back he must have died happy doing the thing he loved, making people laugh.

There's a couple of apocryphal stories about the fez hat that might be worth adding: Back in the day, it seems, Tommy was the cabaret at a dinner club with a Casablanca theme, and all the waiters were dressed accordingly. Tommy pinched a hat from a passing waiter and popped it on. The audience liked it so he incorporated it into his look from then on. He also had a trademark catchphrase "Justlikethat" (said quickly), especially after a trick that had gone well. This was accompanied by a gesture in which he held his forearms out in front of him at waist level, fingers splayed. He'd jerk his hands forward a little and say the phrase. It became so attached to him that anyone who did an impersonation of Tommy always said it (like Robert DeNiro and "You talkin' to me?") One day, Tommy was on holiday in Egypt and he happened to see a guy selling hats from a stall in the souk, so of course he went over to take a look. The guy didn't recognise him, but when he heard him speaking English he picked up a fez, put it on, and said "Jusslaikat" while doing the hand jerk thing. Tommy was amazed and asked the guy where he'd learnt it. "I don't know what it means," he replied, "but you're the first Englishman whose been here and not done it".

He was notoriously tight with money and had a great way of tipping doormen, waiters and so on. He would swiftly slip what seemed to be a couple of folded up notes into their breast pocket; nod, wink and say: "There you are. Have a drink on me." It felt like a reasonable wad of cash. Disappointment followed though. He had given them a teabag.

Hello, just wanted to say BIG MASSIVE THANK YOU KINDLY, for how much you've made me smile and laugh over the past few weeks discovering watching you on KZbin whilst I've been unfortunately blooming stuck bedridden. Many, many years ago me and my Nan used to love watching so much of what you've been discovering yourself, like the two ronnies, Tommy cooper, Dave Allen. Your bringing back wonderful memories for me back with Nan, heaven for me! Also seeing you try out all the British chocolate and crisps and iron brew, that Nan would get for me as a kid, has made me feel hungry for it all again, good old memories. Especially the Marmite, on toast, on sausages, marmite crisps and best was the bags of marmite cashew nuts! As they say, you either love it or hate it. Well Nan and me absolutely loved it! (My wife hates it.) You've made me feel once able to walk again, to go out and buy as much marmite and iron brew as possible. Where Nan and myself lived long ago we would have fun watching loads of Squirrels outside all day long, then once with my wife, she laughed seeing a Squirrel steal an American type cookie from my hand. I know I've gone on too long, but truthfully hope your O.K during these hard times, and once again big massive thank you kindly for giving me a good time, time out, Richard.

Tommy Cooper was a legend and his act was full of the tricks not working which he deliberately did which was a feat in itself to purposely make the trick fail, when he made the trick work he was the real master of deception as you said. He was actually a member of the magic circle which only the best can join and you have to be tested by them to see if you are good enough to be a member, so not just anyone can join. I remember seeing him on TV at the London Palladium when he took ill suddenly on stage and collapsed and died, the audience kept laughing and thought it was part of the act even when he was pulled through the stage curtain out of view after the stage hands realised something was wrong. He died the way he would of wanted with the audience laughing at him, a sad loss of a brilliant magician and comedian, he is greatly missed. Try and find his metal rings trick, remember seeing it and it was a classic. Here is a link to a clip with him doing it go to 36 mins in to see the trick kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHbNd41mbpieb68&ab_channel=LifeOnKZbinAndFaceBook

I know Tommy Cooper was a magician and actual member of the Magic Circle, but I would still class him as a comedian first and magician second. It's like Bill Bailey uses music a lot in his jokes Tommy used magic. It really is genius. I can also see how he uses language as well, just like The Two Ronnies, maybe not as eloquently, but he often used words with double meanings in his jokes. I just can't believe though that you've done two videos onm and he's not said his catchphrase yet, Just Like That!!! Haven't seen Tommy Cooper in such a long time, but he's great, made me laugh so much, which is what we need in these times I can tell you!!! It's funny he has the magic, the word play, and a bit of slapstick all thrown in together. I hope there are enough quality videos of him on KZbin to do more of these, maybe you could turn it into a Two Tommy Tuesday or something? There you go, you can have that one for free!!!

Tommy Cooper was rated as one of the best magicians of all time. Don't take my word for it, you can hear it from the likes of Penn and Teller. He was known as a drinker of Falstaffian proportions. He was a huge ambling man that would get a laugh just walking on stage and then proceed with a series of bad jokes (perfectly timed of course,) and bad magic store tricks to get the audience to laugh 'til they peed their seats. He would then finish with a trick that would have everyone stunned because it was actually good and it worked. His big trick was usually delivered in the same bumbling style as his stupid tricks. The Bottle-Glass trick is a good example. You think he has stumbled his way through a reasonably successful trick and then he proceeds to fill the table with bottles. He actually did die on stage and the audience thought it was another of his off-the-cuff gags and laughed as he was dragged back through the curtain. Footage is actually floating around KZbin somewhere. His trademark Fez reportedly dates back to WW2 when, in the army as a member of ENSA, an entertainment organization for the troops, he could not find his uniform hat and donned the fez before going on stage. The troops loved it and he was allowed to keep it. To get the full effect of Tommy's big trick, one should watch the bumbling lead up where he proceeds to set the bar so low for Big Trick that it leads you to say to yourself WTF when the Big Trick works. BTW, thanks for posting this. I am now subscribed.

He just fumbled about and went through a myriad of different facial expressions and after a minute or so everyone was roaring with laughter including me sat at home. By the time he did speak you couldn't hear him clearly for the laughter. Pure genius. Oh how we could have done with Tommy over this past year.

I read a story once about Tommy and his wife going on a Mediterranean cruise which eventually took them to Alexandria. The locals gathered to greet the ship with all their wares to sell the disembarking passengers including a man who sold the famous fez. Tommy and his wife walked by and were surprised to hear the Egyptian calling out “Just like that!” Tommy’s most famous catch phrase. It turned out that pretty much every Brit who bought a fez put it on and immediately said “Just like that!” so the Egyptian bloke did the same. I don’t know if it is an apocryphal tale, but I’d very much like it to be true.

@Hey Look Squirrel. Great reaction. Tommy was one of my favourite comedians. Another favourite is Chic Murray whom I recommend to you.

Acted silly as though he was struggling, But was a member of the magic circle ⭕️ a prestigious organisation. You needed to be very good to pass their membership exams

He was more than a member of the magic circle, he was part of the highest level, the inner circle. Extremely talented man.

After the Royal Variety performance in London. (Lots of artist perform at the London Palladium to raise money for charity) All the performers line up to meet the Queen. Tommy asked the Queen if she liked football. Not particularly. He asked her can I have your FA cup tickets then.

Tommy started as a comedy magician during the second world war and, according to his friend and comedy genius Eric Sykes, he used to perform in a Pith Helmet. One night, in Cairo, he forgot it and stole a fez from one of the waiters at the cabaret and wore one ever since. Eric Sykes, by the way, is another legend. Comic timing and reactions like nobody else - made more remarkable by the fact that he was almost stone deaf and couldn't hear cues!

Tommy Cooper literally died on stage, of a heart attack, at a variety show which was being shown live television in 1984. The audience just thought it was part of his act as he collapsed as he fell through the stage curtains with his feet sticking out.

Tommy Cooper was a naturally funny man, and could have a audience roaring with laughter just by walking on stage.

I'm surprised you got it. I've seen other people, mainly younger people though, think he's an oaf and hate how he can not get the 'magic' right... That's not the point. He is one of the comedy greats. He used to practise getting those tricks wrong more than actual magicians practised getting them right. hahaha. You will never ever see comic timing done better. I was actually watching TV when he died Live on stage. I can't remember much of it as I was very young, about 8 or 9, I just remember him falling over and everyone laughing thinking it was part of the act. The show was being broadcast live and I think it cut to commercial. A short while later the host, I think it was Jimmy Tarbuck came on to say that he'd had a heart attack or stroke, can't really remember, and had died. My Mom, who I was watching it with was in tears

Tommy Cooper is quite simply a legend. He makes me chuckle, and others howl with laughter. One of the few to make the transition from Music Hall / Variety to TV. Variety is exactly what it sounds like, which is why his act is a hybrid. The audience came to be entertained, and were unfussed what form the entertainment took.
