There should be at least 50 bands in this Top 10. Black Sabbath, The Animals, Dire Straits, Iron Maiden, The Police, The Jam, Cream, Derek and the Dominos, The Clash, Happy Mondays, The Sex Pistols, The Cure, Blur, Procol Harum, The Smiths, The Sweet, Judas Priest, The Spencer Davis Group, The Moody Blues, Massive (Attack), The Specials, Roxy Music, Madness, Simple Minds, Gorillaz, The Stranglers, etc.

The British invasion started in the early 1960's. Up until the 1990's British musicians made up somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of the American pop charts. And when it comes to what we now call "classic rock" they pretty much dominated the 1970's.

I am lucky to have seen many bands but Queen at Wembley Stadium in 1986 was the best band I have ever seen live. They literally were fantastic and Freddie was every bit the best performer by far! The crowd interaction and engagement was incredible and you had the feeling that they were performing because they enjoyed doing it and they were doing it for you, not just because it was their job. It was a very unique experience.

The Police should be in that top 10, way more influential (and bigger) than Oasis amongst others. The two best gigs I've ever been to my husband bought us tickets for, were number 1 Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters, to see Robert Plant sing Whole Lotta Love was my top musical moment. The second was Ray Davies from The Kinks, he sang all The Kinks hits, it was a real tingling hair on the back of the neck moment when he sang Waterloo Sunset. Top 10's are always subjective, and hardly any two lists will be the same. So many groups never even made the honourable mentions list - Slade, Wizzard, T-Rex, Marmalade, Animals, Hollies, Tremeloes, Procol Harum, Dave Clark 5, Dire Straits, ELO, Genesis, Moody Blues and many, many more. The Tremeloes always sounded like they were making music because they enjoyed it, the Moody Blues put up a good case for the concept album kings, and as for ELO, well it's ELO, say no more. Genesis gave us Phil Collins, the Animals brought us Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Lynne and George Harrison gave us two parts of the Travelling Wilburys. The list goes on.

@@karlkuttup Wrong. They, all of them, stole the idea from Dave Davies of The Kinks who had shredded his guitar amp's speaker with a razor blade in order to obtain a total distortion effect. The pedals came later, although had long been invented ten years earlier by Les Paul. Jimi Hendrix subsequently led the field in that respect, having teemed up with Roger Mayer, a former electronics technician with the Royal Navy, who made loads of effects stuff for Jimi throughout his career.

I don’t know if you know much about early British Rock’n’Roll but from that genre there’s an artist called Billy Fury, who The Beatles auditioned for in the hope of becoming his backing band (he was a fellow Scoucer after all) but they were obviously unsuccessful. He was also amongst the first (if not the first) British recording artists in the rock and pop industries to write and perform their own material. He Lao did UK tours with the likes of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran and definitely worth a listen.
@ianharrison3662
@ianharrison3662 11 ай бұрын
According to the Beatles' first manager, Allan Williams, who was present when a dozen or so Liverpool bands auditioned for Billy Fury. Billy wanted the Beatles to be his backing group, However, Billy's manager, Larry Parnes (who managed a great many British singing stars of the time - Marty Wilde, Adam Faith etc ) noticed that Stuart Sutcliffe wasn't actually playing his bass guitar and rapidly deduced that the reason was that he couldn't play. So, Parnes told the Beatles that they were hired... BUT, they had to get rid of Stuart. Stuart's best friend John Lennon refused to fire Stuart and so the gig went to another band. As a consolation, Parnes did let the Beatles (Stuart included) back another of his singers - Johnny Gentle - on a tour of Scotland a couple of months later.

I'm British born and bred and I broadly agree with your order of the best British bands. How Oasis can be placed above Radiohead is beyond me. Radiohead are way more original and inventive. Oasis based their whole sound on a Beatles B side in my opinion. When the Beatles released Rain as a B side to Papertback Writer in 1966, they were breaking ground once more. but would move on to other masterpieces that were completely different. Oasis churned out that same old sound for years. Some great songs, but how they can even compare themselves to the greatest band of all time is an outragous concieit.
