Dude, cricket grounds are one of the biggest or the biggest sports grounds ever to exist so imagine how much grounds fielders have to cover to catch a high catch.
@robertferraro236
@robertferraro236 Күн бұрын
The ones that are caught in the slips (behind the batter) are often travelling at between 85 and 100 mph. So it is like catching a pitcher's fast ball with one's bare hands. When you learn how to catch properly it doesn't hurt at all. It's all about having your hands cupped right and the ball just enters and hits right.

@@Chaddington98 Yes red balls are used in day test matches, and players generally don't hit the ball in air during tests a lot. The main point there is to survive, rather than score runs. So high catches in test matches are pretty rare.

@@Chaddington98 White balls are used in limited overs matches because of the coloured clothing. Normal games we use the traditional red balls and now in some games pink balls. Even in local suburban cricket we have to use the pink balls now for T20 matches but I think thats a marketing ploy by the league to sell us more cricket balls.

A lot of cricketers would tell you that many of the hardest catches are close catches behind the stumps by the 'slip' fielders. They require terrific concentration (you may have to wait hours for one) and you require tremendous reflexes to catch these 'bullets', and coordination to be consistent. These guys are real specialists, on the cricket field.

If you study your history of cricket you will learn that baseball has not always worn gloves. The ball deliveries were also both underarm for a long time. Remember that the baseball glove is worn on the non dominant hand.

If you have ever played both games it's obvious, in baseball the ball is frequently thrown amongst the players at full speed. In cricket only one player catches the ball at full speed in every play, the wicket keeper, who is also the only player who wears gloves.

@flamingfrancis
@flamingfrancis Күн бұрын
Absolute rubbish...look up the manufacturing specifications of both balls, then come back and state one is MUCH harder or heavier. Cricket balls are also used for up to 90 overs where they soften. Game baseballs are renewed very regularly in MLB games and don't get a chance to soften. The seam is also twice the length and stitching is more prone than central seam of cricket ball.

I thought, 'No, it's nearer to me.' Trouble is, I only thought it so when I went for the ball, I walked into the back of my friend, my hands were knocked out of the way and I caught the ball with my eye! Indeed. I mostly fielded at first slip. For the uninitiated, that is the position behind the batsman, to the immediate side of the wicket keeper (who does wear gloves). You are waiting for a batsman to 'edge' the ball. From a fast bowler that is going at some rate, and you are not that far away. Reflexes are everything in that position. Fielding in the outfield, waiting an eternity for a ball to come down, was not my idea of fun! :)

To make a fair catch, you must catch the ball before it touches the ground and then have control of the ball. If you catch a ball close to the boundary and step over the boundary rope with the ball in hand, the batter gets six runs and is not out. If after catching the ball you throw it infield before you step on the ground over the line and then return and catch the ball again or another fielder catches the ball you have thrown, it is a fair catch and the batter is out. There was a good example of a fielder throwing it to himself and one where he threw it to a teammate in that collection.

@flamingfrancis

The difference in manufacturer's specifications means the cricket ball would have 5-10% more force when travelling at the same speed. So which one would you prefer to be standing in front of if both are coming at you at say, 60MPH if you can't stop it.? Cricket balls go soft during the time they are in the game whereas baseballs are being renewed very regularly and an average of 20-30 can be used in any MLB game. The stitched seam on a baseball is also twice the length of a cricket ball making it more prone to cause cutting injuries. Now you have some balance to your comment.

First time I tried the game as a little kid, I tried to stop a ball rolling along the ground like my big cousins had taught me (knee down to make a backstop in case you miss, start with a nice big "net", eye on the ball, eye on the ball, eye on the ball ) but it was a bumpy ground, and the ball hit a bump just as it got near me, took off, hit me somewhere in the head or face. Gave up cricket after that, till forced to play it as a teen. (It's not a game for someone with two left hands, and ten thumbs.)

These catches are subjective and no doubt there have been better over the years. The best catches are those that where the fielder has little time to react. Obviously, the catches where the fielder close to the boundary, release the ball before going over the boundary and regathers the ball in the field of play.

I don't think #2 is a legal catch under current rules (not sure how old it is, so they might have changed the rules since then). Might be wrong, but I think the current rule requires that if you go outside the boundary, you have to touch the ground inside the boundary before making contact with the ball again (or similar). So while i's still a great catch, he needs to be back inside the field of play (and have some part of his body touch the ground) before he can complete the catch legally.

I wouldn't call number 2 to actually be legal a catch. Didn't reestablish contract in the field prior to catching the ball the second time. Would be like stepping out of the field as the ball comes in and leaping forward back into the field while catching the ball in mid air, should be a six.

@Chaddington98 I was once out all Friday night. I had one hour sleep and arrived at the ground 13 minutes before the start of play. My team won the toss and chose to bat even though one opening batsman wasn't there. I had to rush to get ready although I was more keen on telling everybody about my night even though there wasn't enough time. I continued my story to the other opening batsman. My team batted very poorly, including me. My team mates got out while I batted poorly without getting out. I batted for three and a half hours while all my team mates got out. So, I spent three and a half hours telling one team mate at a time and the entire other team and the umoires about getting picked up and taken home by two women. I had more sexual partners than hours sleep. I am legendary at my club for that day because apparently batsmen usually talk about cricket while batting and not their sexual exploits. Especially to the other team.....

These are not the top ten by a long shot. The best ones are the nicks caught on low sideways dives in the slips where the fielders have milliseconds to react. The ball doesn't go high up in the air so there is no time to run and get near the ball. They are probably not included as catching them on slo-mo is very tough.

The last ones video is old and misleading. The player actually throws the ball to another fielder who makes the catch. But its off screen in this video. So you don't see the 2nd fielder make the catch.

Nowhere near the top 10 in history. Perhaps the top 10 RECORDED in some region. Many of these are reactionary catches which are hit or miss but the most difficult to catch is the running outfield catch while running back over the shoulder (same as per baseball). These are planned and not reactionary. One of the best (recorded) was taken by Australian Travis Head who was awarded the MVP of the 2023 CWC World Cup Final.

He could have thrown it on the ground but it wouldn't be a catch, but it would have saved 6 runs.

These are great catches but not the best ones as it depends on what country the person is from who posted the video as they tend to be too biased.

Some strange audio phasing going on in the clip. 2 tracks going into the edit perhaps? Enjoy the cricket.

Apologies! Yes, there were two tracks, but I can't imagine it would be phasing unless my microphone was picking up sound from my headphones. I'll have to do some investigation. Thank you!

@@Chaddington98 You're welcome. Not a huge problem but thought it might be helpful to note. Try out some AFL one day too. 2023 Grand Final highlights for a very exciting game but maybe an intro to the game first. I still have issues with some of the rules for these sports after a lifetime of watching so good luck!

Some of these arent even top 1000 catches, certainly none of these would make it into the top 10 catches.

No gloves and the cricket ball is much harder (and heavier) than a baseball, but cricketers are not softies.... 🙂 Plus it has a hard seam that while the ball is new, can cut your skin.
