And just to let you know coffee houses were set up in London before tea houses. Lyons was a coffee house first.

Modern coffee was invented in London, before then it was boiling grounds in a pot then pouring the concoction but we put it in muslin. Ironically, of course, the modern follow up to filtering coffee, the tea bag, was invented in America, New York I think.

Yes but women drinking Coffee or Chocolate was frowned down upon the only drink a woman was able to drink decently in public was tea. So eventually Coffee Houses began to see a demand in serving it for the Ladies. As it was expensive they probably were Ladies, too.

Also missing from this video is Bob Marley who lived at a squat in Brixton. You should check out Jools Guides videos on KZbin, he walks around London and is very knowledgeable about the music scene as well as history in general.

From about when I was born in 1938 until (say)1950, I lived in a basement flat in a road parallel to Abbey Road. In fact our garden backed on to the gigantic recording studios ,so from the time I was a toddler and able to play in the garden I would hear what went on ,when the windows were open . During the War years ,the studio was used more for rehearsal purposes ,I don't think there was recording done then, but I would regularly hear orchestral rehearsals ,with a few bars of a classical piece begun ,a pause as a quiet voice gave instruction ( the conductor, I imagine), the music resuming and so on ,for several hours each time . It only occurred to me later in life as an adult, that I had probably been privileged to hear the best International Orchestras, Soloists and Conductors of classical music at the time . I remember aged about 9 enjoying listening to classical music concerts on the radio with my Father and easily recognising the works I had heard in rehearsal. My older sister was never interested in the music but does recall hearing the technicians playing table tennis and sometimes, to her pleasure, finding their ping-pong balls in the garden ,having come out through the studio windows !

There have been coffee houses in England since the 1600's :) I went to where Jimi Hendrix lived, i seem to remember it has a little spare bedroom where his friends George Harrison or Eric Clapton would stay over:) and there is a replica of his record collection that you can look through.

Some musical London residences,esp the Barnes area. Freddie Mercury shared a house,40 Ferry Road,Barnes,with Brian May,Roger Taylor and Tim Staffell,asked to be in Brian and Rogers band,Smile,but suggested the name change to Queen.Thus this can be considered the bands birthplace.Brian May also lived nearby,at 54 Suffolk Road. Around the corner,and perhaps a sad mile or two from his death site,Marc Bolan shared a flat on Lonsdale Road,with British actor James Bowlam,and lived at 142 Upper Richmond Road West.Fairport Conventions Sandy Denny collapsed with an ultimately fatal head injury at 93 Castelnau.

Mozart and his father were always constantly travelling around EUROPE from a young age his Sister also accompanied them it was only when he was an adult they he could put roots down in Vienna where he lived with his wife . In the days of Mozart and other budding composers , they were always on the lookout for Patrons to support them Beethoven was the first composer that didn’t relay on a patron and was freelance 🤷‍♀️
@whitedwarf4986
@whitedwarf4986 14 күн бұрын
It's worth noting that Mozart was actually the world's first freelance composer, after he was heavily restricted by Archbishop Colloredo of Salzburg, effectively ruining his chances of gaining a wealthy patron, and subsequently relying on ticket sales for his income, (which wasn't a huge success after a combination of low audience capacity, not enough repeat performances, and Mozart over spending accruing debts). You are right, Beethoven was eventually freelance after his works making so much money in manuscript sales and concert tickets, he was able to rely on his own income, making him the first successful freelancer, but not the first, that was Mozart. Someone once said, "Mozart was the first freelance musician to almost succeed; Beethoven was the first TO succeed".

On two covers of early-Sixties' Beatles Albums, you can see them looking over the rails of a staircase. It was one of their business offices. The building was at the top of Manchester Square, W.1. The Square has some original ironwork on the houses. I worked there, in 1978, as a Secretary for a group of Architects, We all knew the Beatles had been in those lovely modern offices. As a fan, I was very proud. J.H.

Funny when the cops were getting calls about a flying pig considering that the word pig is a common slang term for a cop in Britain, which goes back to the 1960's. I've seen Pink Floyd live about 20 times, the best was the Pulse Tour at Earls Court, London in 94 where I was in the front row. Most footage from that show is on You Tube. I've picked up master tapes from Trident Studios to take to EMI's record pressing plant back in the early 70s.

A couple of music things in London that some people may not be aware of, the Marquee club was a major venue on Charing Cross Road and the building it was located in is still there and is still a pub. The guy that wrote Let It Go from Frozen (me) lived in Shepherd's Bush and was next door neighbour to Mr Nice (Howard Marks). He used to go and watch bands play on Sunday at the local Walkabout Inn.

I often drive down Abbey Road and pass the studios because it's a secondary radial road between two major radial roads heading out of London to the Northwest suburbs where I live. Despite passing so often, I still get a buzz out of seeing it. George Handel also played organ in my local church St Lawrence's, Little Stanmore for the self styled Duke of Chandos. Must have been quite a journey (about 10 miles) from Central London back then.

You can visit the Handel Hendrix Museum and it is worth going to . It is not far from Carnaby Street, which was the trendy heart of groovy 60s London. Most of these locations are very close but you would be advised to get the bus up to Abbey Road. It's easy to find but it is a long walk from the centre of town.

Far less glamorous but the Cart & Horses in Stratford (East London) is where Iron Maiden played their first gig (and a ton of their early gigs thereafter). It is now something of a shrine to the band with a ton of memorabilia, regular tribute acts (alongside other live music) and sells Maiden's own range of beers on keg (Trooper being the most widely drank).
