One point he didn't make in the video was age limits. To get a Shotgun licence there isn't an actual minimum age. For a Firearms Licence the minimum age is 14. But to purchase guns and ammunition the minimum age is 18.

There are two errors in this video that the OP does point out in a pinned comment on the video. He got the population of the UK wrong at the time it was 65 million and not 56 Million and Gun homicides were approximately 30 in 2018 not 60.

As a Brit I've never had any interest in owning a firearm even if I could meet the criteria, however I've often thought it would be a good experience to be able to shoot one in a safe and controlled environment, such as a shooting range. Oh and it's refreshing to hear an American say that better vetting procedures and restrictions is a sensible thing :)

@@lydiamichaels1976 I think he means civilised as in civilised, like free healthcare for all, not having to worry about protecting yourself, feeling safe in your enviroment, not worry that any crazy can get a gun, paid holiday by law, paid sick leave paid maternity, trained police there to serve, that kinda civilised. The answer is no america is not civilised I lived there for 8 years in Michigan and does not have the safety of europe .

There is a gun shop 10 minutes walk from me. I have never been in, but my understanding is they sell for hunting purposes. Whether it is good or bad. This is an odd one... I mean if you look at countries with stricter gun control there are fewer murders and accidental shooting. The reason I say it is odd is the US cycle of violence paradox. People have the right to bear arms, this means it is easy for criminals to get guns, The public need to protect themselves so get guns, the police need guns to protect themselves from criminals who are going to be carrying guns, the police now assume anyone at the roadside has a gun and over react. Because police over react, extreme 2nd amendmenters feel even greater need to have guns, and the criminals want better guns, and so do the public, and the police become more like the military and the cycle continues. In the UK most police do not carry guns, many don't even carry tasers (although it is becoming more common) Generally armed police are only called out when required. This means that we don't have hot head cops pulling weapons (and using them unnecessarily)... the armed police are better trained with their guns as they spend far more time training than on active duty. Regular cops are much better trained in de-escalation techniques. The result is that police are generally more approachable as they are trained better in social skills, and even when you do come across an armed cop (which you will at airports and near political buildings) they are also actually very approachable due to their high levels of training. I am not saying the British cops are perfect, but I have had dealings with police on both sides of the Atlantic, and uk cops are far more approachable. (and yes that absolutely includes armed police officers)

The biggest thing they miss off here, and the biggest difference in ownership between uk and usa, is in the uk you cannot use your gun for defence, only what you registered it for e.g. target shooting, hunting, farm pest control etc

There are restrictions about storing your guns ,only briefly mentioned here . The guns and the ammunition must be in a locked cupboard secured to a wall . At no time should any gun be left outside this cupboard when not being used and if it is reported ,the person would lose the firearms license.

Most guns held within private premises are farmers. Rules regarding transportation of guns is strict too. Gun clubs tend to store the person's guns in non rural settings. If you break the rules there's no second chances and police make spot checks.

In general. The most likely firearm anyone will have in the UK. Is a 12 gauge shotgun. Most farmers, land owners and country people will have one. For shooting vermin and game on driven shoots. 22 rifles are relatively common for deer and foxes. Most guns in the UK. Are for shooting the wildlife. Whereas, from what I have heard. Most USA guns are for shooting people.

The bit about being able to own a Baretta or and Uzi is slightly misleading. Although he is technically correct you would have to make a really good argument as why you would need a weapon like this. Given that the police determine weather you get one or not the chances of your argument being sucessful is very unlikely. Even police who are allowed to have guns in the UK can not take them home and must return them to their station before they clock off. This includes tasers as I was told this by a member of the police who turned down taser training for that very reason. If he was on a job in outer London he may have to go all the way in the opposite direction of his home to return the gun before he could go off duty.

Almost no Brit has or wants a gun. Wanting one is seen as a red flag. It's illegal here to have a gun to defend yourself and anyone who felt they needed one for that would be seen as dangerously paranoid. Guns are simply not a part of our lives.

The problem with trying to introduce gun control in the states is the enormity of the black market weapon availability. You'd only be taking guns away from good people. I mean, it's highly unlikely that there's a gun in the street I live in. It's unlikely that there's a gun in the entire shopping centre at peak times, so I do not feel that my family requires a gun to ensure our well-being.

Pistols where banned after Dunblane, although the Law wason the shooters side the labour government banned them, sothey ignored the findings of the judicary. It deflected the attention on to the shooters rather than the police faults as the shooter had been known to the police and no action taken. In fact the guy who did the shooting was a friend to the assistant chief constable of central region. This all so deflected attention from the pedophile ring in the area where judges lawyers and politicians where involved. Before someone thinks this is a rant I have passed on dates times and whowhere involved to Scottish media outlets and surprise this was not taken up. If you look into The Break in to Fettesgate you will understand why this is Lothian and Borders most secure police station happened around 1993, you will see it is a cover up.

In the UK you could ask everyone you know (and everyone they know) or everyone you saw on the street and it would take weeks to find someone who owned a gun. In the US if you asked 10 people at work you would find at least one of them had a gun in the house (and probably closer to half of them). There is simply no gun-ownership culture in the UK.

I'd say it depends where you live. Most of the gun ownership is probably concentrated in rural areas so if you live rurally (as I do) you'll probably know a few people with shotgun's and see more owners around you. In towns and cities though, it would probably be difficult.

There are big issues: they make a lot of things that are on paper legal very impractical. The police have a _lot_ of discretion, they don't need a reason to deny a firearms licence and if they deny it there isn't a lot you can do about it (which when you have a politicized police force - which ours in the UK is very very very very very politicized is highly problematic), and the legitimate reasons for gun ownership are far too strict. Once you get past that, you buy your gun even the ranges make a lot of things that are legal impractical because of political fear - it's perfectly legal to own something like an AI AX50 ELR, absolutely nothing in law stops you (this is a weapon where even in the US if you produced it some would be taken aback) fires .50 BMG (12.7x99mm for the metric nerds), there are plenty of ranges in the UK that are sufficiently long and safe to fire it yet if you take it to some (see: all) of those ranges they won't let you fire it because muzzle energies - that's an extreme example, but it is the kind of practical nonsense you have to contend with even when you get your licence and legal weapon. You combine these things and you start to get into the reasons why not many people own firearms in the UK - to wit I'd suggest people in the US strongly and aggressively fight firearms restrictions at every stage because things that sound sensible at first stop being very quickly. Criminals in the UK have no such rules and they're getting more common in the criminal world every single day and they're far more likely to use them against the citizenry in the course of crime every single day - waiting around for the police doesn't work when somebody shoots you in the head for your wallet or a hitman mistakes you for an intended target as happened here literally last week. In the UK things are too strict and in the US things are too loose, that's just an objective fact, and nobody demands gun owners use or store them safely, which is just silly, as a gun owner why you wouldn't want training in safe handling and not for nothing the legal issues around their use both generally and in a situation where you need to use them to protect yourself is beyond me.
