There's no draft picks in football, you have to buy the players, which can be over £100 million for the very best, this is a fee which goes directly to the club not the player, the new club would then also have to negotiate the new contract with the player, which includes wages.

I´m braziilian and, this must be the twentieth time I've seen a video of an American trying to understand European football (what you call soccer) ! And I think this is so fun, because any 6 or 7 year old child in Europe, Latin America, Africa and some regions in Asia can understand this format (which is also used in football on other continents around the world). And also because football is the most popular sport in the world, so it's a little strange to see Americans know practically nothing about this sport! National League (with promotion / relegation) - National Cup (for all or almost all divisions) - Continental Cup ! Anyway ... I like the relegation/promotion system, because it would be very boring... A LOT of BORING every season, always the same teams in the league, and also because it doesn't allow the clubs that are in the last positions in the table to accommodate, because, they they will have to fight to the end to stay in the league and it's also nice that the best teams in the second division have the possibility to play in the first division! And teams that have been demoted can be promoted again, this may occur in some cases by creating ''elevator clubs'' or ''Yo - Yo clubs''. For example: Here in Brazil, (where the relegation system is wilder as 4 teams are relegated), the biggest example of this is Avaí FC. Avaí FC 2014 : 4th in the second division (PROMOTED to the first division) Avaí FC 2015 : 17th in the first division (RELEGATED to the second division) Avaí FC 2016 : Runner-up in the second division (PROMOTED to the first division) Avaí FC 2017 : 18th in the first division (RELEGATED to the second division) Avaí FC 2018 : 3rd in the second division (PROMOTED to the first division) Avaí FC 2019 : 20th in the first division (RELEGATED to the second division) I also like the ''National Cups'' because, as it says in the video itself, teams from all divisions can play in the Cup, and there are always underdogs. Eg: In the 2017-2018 KNVB (Netherlands) Cup, AVV Swift (amateur fifth division team) beat SBV Vitesse (first division professional team and which was the current champion of the title at the time) Real Madrid (considered by many the biggest football club in the world, was eliminated in the Copa del Rey of Spain by the small club called Alcorcón, which at the time played in the third division)

the league games, cup games & the champions league games run concurrently (although they do not start at the same time in the season (which runs from august to may)). the individual leagues create their own calendar scheduling cup games and champions league games usually as mid-week games and league games usually on weekends (this schedule is flexible though). so theoretically if a team plays in all three (or more) competitions they usually need a large number of quality players to win all competitions (which is something that does not happen [often]). so this system means usually every team has a target, for instance some first division teams don't win the league but they may be veterans when it comes to cup games etc etc. so in short, in football there are always targets to aim for. some teams play for survival from the first game of the league. some play to win the league. some play to stay in the league and maybe win the cup. some play for the four top spots in their league so they can qualify for champions league.

The way I describe it to my friends is to think college basketball. You have the season (League), the conference tourney(the Cup) and the NCAA tourney(Champions League). Now imagine if all three are played at the same time. Let's say you have Duke. So on Saturday Duke will play Virginia in a league game, Wednesday they play Michigan in an NCAA tourney game then next Saturday they play North Carolina in a Conference tourney game. As far as importance of the trophies, I would rank it League, then Champions League then the Cup. Most might put Champions League ahead of League but I'm weird. The Cup is definitely third though. The special teams in history are those that win all three in the same season. That's called the treble.

there are more than two divisions in each country, and at the end of the season you don't really get kicked out of the league you get relegated to the lower division, if you are good enough you can get promoted again if you win the division the next season, but this is not easy, some do not do this and get relegated in multiple seasons

Division isn't really the best term to se for it, really, at least when speaking with american, because American leagues are split up int conferences and divisions, but the teams are still part of the same league. What would be more comparable to divisions would be splits in lower leagues in Europe. The fourth league in Germany (Regionalliga is split up into Bavaria, North, North-East, West and South-West. These could be seen as seperate divisions of the Regionalliga. The biggest difference to American divisions here would be, that the teams don't play against each other during the regular season and only face each other at the end of the season in a playoff type setup to determine who moves up to the third league.

Imagine if every US state had its own league within state lines with 1st, 2nd, 3rd divisons....and so on rather then USA having MLS and USL clubs spread across the entire country. Depending on the states population more clubs would qualify to play in the US Champions league (California 4 slots, Rhoad Island 1 slot) after the normal season. That would mean small clubs could climb up the pyramid ladder and play in the big leagues providing they played well over time. That would drive more people to be more interessted in the sport. It would mean that thousands of clubs could compete in an open league system rather then the closed off system that dominate US sports today.

06:40 the league is bigger than the cup, if u win the cup its cool u celebrate, but if u lose in the cup u don't really care. Most big teams play the reserves in the cup until they reach they semi final and start to take it more serious. 09:06 yes all these tournaments are played in the same period, midweek games and weekend games.

I'm not European, I'm Brazilian, but here in Brazil it follows the same style of competitions as Europe, we have the league (Brasileirão) and the cup (Brazil Cup), and we, like most of the world, we prioritize the league more, as it is the main championship, but we like the Cup a lot, as it provides the opportunity for amateur teams to gain more space in the national football scenario. The league style of competition we brazilians call it "running points style" because the team with the most points wins, and although many of us find the Knock-out style (cup competition style) more exciting, the style competition used in the league (running points) is fairer, because all teams face off each other, and the team that wins more games is the champion, simple, it's much fairer, don't you think? Fun fact, in some countries there is the Super Cup, where at the beginning of the season, the league champion from the previous season and the cup champion from the previous season face off in a single game, to see who is the best team in the country, but countries that have this do not prioritize this game so much, the teams themselves use this game more as a small preparation for the new season. So yes, we prioritize the league more, but still, we love and care a lot about the Cup.

Jay in Europe in each country, almost each village has a club and cities can have 2 or 3 this happens in west Europe i don't know about east and north( except for UK ,these, have a lot more i believe ), in South America is similar too ,a lot of clubs ,a lot of divisions like, 4 professional per country more or less + no professional(4 divisions) too, more or less , it s a lot . This in loving football countries, like south Europe ,UK, South América, the rest not sure. The better , bigger competitions are country League then champions league of Europe (a cup tournament) or UEFA cup (Europa cup tournament ,2 most important of Europe Cups, you can win this an play if eliminated from champions league in beginning ,sometimes depend on position on the champions league of Europe) + super cup of Europe a single game with Champions League winner vs UEFA WINNER +(1 or 2 cup s) from each countries (most countries have 1 or 2 cup in their league).

@obi-wankenobi917

It’s a bit more complex with the champions league cause it’s how good your league is that decides how many teams get to play in the champions league from that country some get 3 or 4 and some get 1 but they need to go through multiple qualifying rounds. Also theres 4 pots while doing the draw for the groups, the top teams are pot 1 and worst are pot 4 and you can’t get drawn with a team in your own pot

Bit of an info dump here, sorry if something ain't clear. Feel free to ask questions or for clarification. Global football IS complicated when it comes to league, rules, etc. The only country I think doesn't(I'm excluding the Vatican) have his own soccer league is Liechtenstein(population, 40k). Countries as small as Luxembourg and Iceland have their own leagues. I believe their best team plays in Switzerland. There are 55 UEFA(Europe) leagues. These are the leagues that if you win the highest tier(remember, England has like 15 levels of football, not 2, under the premier league and tens of thousands of clubs trying to climb the ladder, a question that's often asked is why US stadiums tend to be bigger and it's because for example me, I go and watch a fifth tier club in Belgium every week instead of a top club, we have more stadium but because of that of course they're smaller) you will play in the UEFA champions league. If I look at the second tier in England right now it's basically full of teams that at one point played in the first tier and that therefore I easily recognize. I will still find teams that played in the first division in the third and fourth tier. In the 4tier of England you can today find a team that won back to back European championships. There are 44 countries in Europe. Some of the descrepincies are for example, the UK has 4. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Israel is also in the EUFA confederation because sending an Israel club to Iran strikes me as a bad idea. About the league vs cup it is important to understand what's behind it. The league is the mainway to qualify for European football. It's looking for the BEST team. Not the team that was just in form for a month. Things like play-offs go against the entire spirit of a league. Manchester City were the premier league winners this season. They didn't win because of their opening, they were awful. But then during the winter and early spring they just kept winning on and on and went on an insane run. A cup is less prestigious because at the end of the day it's just winning 6-7 games. Impressive but it's a side thing. If necessary good teams that play in Europe will send less good players to it(there are a lot of games and recovering from games is essential, if I play football manager I basically do "rotate full", meaning that my entire first team doesn't play, no risk for injuries, I can let me players rest for a week so they're ready for more important games that WILL determine what happens the year after) and there is even something called a "cup keeper" that's basically just the second best keeper a team has and he does all the little cups instead of the first choice goalkeeper. When it comes to the UEFA champions league, remember that football is a global sport. The UEFA stands for Europe but every country in the world basically is in one of the regions. You have Northern, central america and the Carribian, South-America, Asia, South-East Asia+ Australia, Africa and then the islands East of Austrlia. All countries in those regions have a league. Best teams of those countries also play in their own "champions league". For example in South-America it's possible for the final there to be a team from Brazil vs a team from Argentina. The winner in the NA one is often Mexican though some MLS teams do decent. Because America begins playing in spring it's still going on and currently it's 3 mexican teams and one MLS team in the semi-finals. Don't think the MSL team is going to win from América though, they're one of the better Mexican teams from what I know. In July, after the season is over, there is also a "world cup for clubs"("world cup" on it's own refers to country football, for most of the rest of the world there is only one "world cup"). Not prestigious for earlier talked about reasons, it's a SMALL little cup with little competition. If they want to Europe will nearly always win. The clubs in these champions league is based on the positions of the league of the PREVIOUS year.

@Londronable
@Londronable 2 жыл бұрын
@@DailyMIKAL (did a lot of edits on my initial comments by the way, edited it as your questions came up) Mmm, not really. You're overlooking something. In the US all teams share revenue and such. They're basically all created equal, all with equal opportunity. Not so in football(excluding MLS) Using premier league clubs. If I support for example Manchester City who won the league this year, yes, the goal is to win the league again. But to get in the European competition the year after you only need a top 4 finish in England(it's based on how good teams of that country do in that competition. The second place team in Luxembourg doesn't qualify for the European competition) So their goal is to win the league but if given the choice they'll settle for second but winning the European competition. If I support Leicester I WANT to win the league but that's not going to happen. The goal is to make top 6(6 and 5 are lower European competitions, seriously not explaining that here), MAYBE top 4(for the main European competition) Because that's where the money is. And for example this year they won the main cup(more than 700 teams in that one). They beat one of those Top 6 clubs in the finals doing it. They had an amazing year and finished 5th, not in the top 4 sadly but all in all, a good year. If I support Norwich city that means that in May we won in the Championship(the second tier of English football). This means that today they're in the premier league that begins next month. Staying in the premier league this year is their only goal. Hopefully long enough that the income it gives can make them climb up so be a mid table team. Every team has it's own goals. Winning the league is something few teams truly expect. Ending 5th or 10th sometimes doesn't matter and therefore the focus might shift from the league to the cups. This often means that if a better team is trying to win the league to get promoted they'll not play their first team, too risky, not worth it, getting promoted is way better. But the team in 7th might want to do a cup run if they think they're safe from relegation and will send their first team. Winning everything is therefore incredibly hard. You need to know where your focus should be. Every game brings risk for injury. The first game of the European cup(countries) one of the positions we(Belgium) were thin in(not a lot of talent in a certain position) got injured, busted eye socket. Maybe because of the team we were playing against he shouldn't have been on the field at all. It was against Russia. Not really a challenge for us.

Now imagine a team from the 3º division wins (rare but happens) a semi professional team get to play in a Continental trophy and the entrance prize award alone is more than 1.000.000 euros that's a lot of money for a semi professional team.

International football is not as entertaining as club competitions imo. Because, they fight for their country. So they won't play RISKY. Also top clubs are a collection of best players in the world. Top National teams each have a couple of stars. Also the fans want beautiful, entertaining game from clubs, while for national teams, ONLY the result matters. So the managers use conservative tactics in international tournaments which is not as fun to watch. For first time watchers I always recommend the Premier League. But that's just my opinion.
