Hey, french here. About the paying for water part, it really depends on the country. In France, you never pay for tap water at a restaurant, you can drink as much as you want. When I went to Hungary, I had to pay for a jug of tap water. Didn't need to pay much, but still. About tipping, it depends on the country too. In France, it is not obligatory at all and is just a polite way to thank the waiter for the service. When I go to a restaurant solo, I tip 1 or 2 euros, max. If you go as a group, you might want to put a little bit more. It also depends on the type of restaurant : if you're going to an expensive restaurant, 1 or 2 euros will seem more rude than nothing. If you have a 150€ bill, putting down between 5 and 10 would be the appropriate amount. But ultimately, it's up to your finances and generosity. You can tip a 10 on a 15€ meal and it will be very generous. It's up to you. You can also befriend the staff at small restaurants, especially family run ones. I go to this small chinese restaurant from time to time and they know me very well, we chat everytime I go there. What can happen then is that you get free stuff with your meal. For example, when I eat at this chinese restaurant I always get a little shot of alcohol for free at the end of the meal. That's the most common "free thing" you'll get at a restaurant, especially in France. It's called a "digestif", which means it helps you digest the food. They will also sometime offer you one if you eat a lot and brought a lot of money to the table so to thank you they give you this little shot of strong alcohol for free. About waiters being rude, it definitely depends on the country and more importantly on the restaurant. I've been to restaurants where I was able to almost become friend with the waiter after going there a handful of times. But you will not get the over the top "hi my name is... and I will be serving you today ! I recommend this and that" It will mostly be the waiter coming to hand you the menu, tell you about the dish of the day and then letting you chose whatever you want and if you need anything specific, you can always ask. But most of the time, they won't be "grumpy", just nice and professional.

iam czech and i hate when some other europeans try to push the non tippin culture, thats the best thing, if u wanna thank for the service. Not tipping also absolutely removes the competition, why bother with good service when u cant earn anything on top of your pay. Its not mandatory here at all too, and noone will be mad at u for not tipping, but if u want u can and it shouldnt be looked down upon.

In the UK we never pay for tap water. A jug of tap water is usually provided at restaurants as standard without even asking and one can ask for as many refills of the jug as they like.

@@MrMajsterixx i think that tipping has nothing to compare with compétition. It's not about compétition between membres of service, its more about who the restaurant's orner will recruit , based on agreableness with the customer, skills, etc Its more like a team. Cheers from France 🖐

To "Making a living out of tiping" ... In the US you have to tip the staff as they are working on low wages, while meanwhile in Germany (for example) it's actually forbidden and ilegal to pay any worker less than $13.80 / hour. But most of the workers earn more. So it's totally fine for them, if you just round up the bill as they get paid fairly ...

He speaks about Czech not Europe. Eg tap water is free in Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands. Another example : in all countries that I mentioned there's no need to tip (can even be considered rude) Bcuz servers get a real salary. Usually the tip is included in the price. One thing : he's right about coffe. Btw in the past USA and German coffee were horrendous. Undrinkable. Colored water.

for the tap water-you will get it for free in 99% of the cases and only pay if they add ice cubes/lemon or cucumber slices... Tap water is not free, work is not frree, cleening of the glases is also not free so I understand when a restaurant inclusdes small price (but you can always fill your water bottle for free in the toilet...it is the same drinking water)

It is not entirely true that there is only one beer in a Czech pub. There are more of them, but in a different way. They ask you what kind of beer you want, but they mean different levels of beer - 10°, 11°, 12°, etc. ... So you come to the pub and say: Take a twelve. What to eat: pilsner. They often don't even ask if it's big or small. You automatically get half a liter.

I think with ordering more food and stuff like that, it might be that in Czechia we often go to the pub or a restaurant with friends and it's a social event. So you eat slower and afterwards maybe keep ordering drinks, because you want to stay longer to talk to your friends. If you just go for food, you wanna be done as quickly as possible and get out, but if it's a social event, you usually want to stay way longer.

As an Italian, that coffee is normal to me, it's an "espresso", it's meant to be that small. We usually drink just a couple of them in the morning and maybe after lunch (well I used to drink six of them during the day but I do not reccomend it if you don't want a heart attack ahahah). It's supposed to be drank right after been made, hence the name I guess, it's readily made (and consumed). We usually drink it in a minute, while standing at the counter. As for Cszeck Republic and Prague, it was so funny to me that water costs way, way more than beer hahaha! But the blonde beer is usually quite light in alcohol, so it's fine. In Italy's major cities we usually have lots of water fountains for everyone to use, but in restaurants sometimes you can only have bottled water. Just be aware that during winter in the north they usually switch the fountains off, to avoid freezing (and consequently rupture) of the pipes. Have safe and entertaining trips ya'll!

I would like to see you to ask to refill our espresso. After the third cup we would call an ambulance to take you to some hospital! It could kill you how strong it is! 🤣🤣 It´s not the brown watter full of ice! BTW, your portions are much bigger than in Europe so that´s why we ask for dessert or something more. And we can sit there for hours and talk or play or work etc.

I think it's a matter of taste, sometimes you just need to feel the taste of coffee and don't have time to sit and enjoy it peacefully. But I totaly agree Starbucks is more like coffee limonade for kids than real exclusive coffee. Despite that american XXL sizes for everything including coffee are insane.

Dude - you should never, ever eat a burger with pink or red meat in the middle. A steak is cooked on the outside, killing any bacteria that may be on the surface. Burger meat is minced so the bacteria is mixed through the whole burger - it should be cooked right through to kill all the bacteria. Stay safe man!

The reason for the tax not being added is a sales tax problem. Some states have sales tax added by the county. So an item in one county has a sales tax of 5% and down the road the tax is 3%. Companies don’t want to go thru the hassle of printing different price tags or price signs for each county.

the reason they dont add the tax , on the price in the store, is so it looks cheaper... so it's to trick u... why would u give tips in Europe? the reason u tip in the states, is coz they get a SHIIIT pay, but in Europe, they are paid a good wage... sure u can tip if u want to, but u done HAVE to...

In the UK we pay a service charge, which is almost always 12.5%, which is included on the bill but one can ask for it to be removed if the service was poor. People think we don't tip in the UK but the service charge is the tip. Wait staff usually get minimum wage in the UK, which is currently £9.50.

A gratuity(tip for the uneducated) is always optional, as per its very name, is discretionary based on whether you are happy with the service provided. A gratuity CANNOT be compulsory, the moment it becomes compulsory its no longer a gratuity but is now a service charge. All Service charges must be clearly & fully disclosed to a customer prior to any order being made by the customer for the customer to be able to agree to the charge or not. A service charge CANNOT be added to a bill if it was not fully disclosed to the customer prior to the customer placing the order, if a service charge is added without prior disclosure the customer is NOT legally required to pay it. This is basic contract law that is almost identical in all of the western world and would be upheld in all Western world courts. Interestingly in majority of Eastern countries tipping is severely frowned upon and in a lot of places even viewed as highly offensive(in leaving a tip your actually saying your surprised the business provided a good service)
