I can understand how they think we pinched bits from many sports lol. BUT I wish when they made vids on our footy, they could have said, “No it’s not a combination of soccer etc etc, and when VFL started in about the 1850s with Tom Wills, and he played footy, before that, maybe, I think lol, with our Indigenous. Must read up on it. Rant over 🥴 😂😂

It does take influence from early versions of rugby, soccer, and Gaelic. Back in the 1850s to 1870s(ish) there wasn’t one universal set of rules. Teams agreed on rules before the start of the game. Eventually the VFA made an attempt to standardise the rules, at least in Victoria. Other states had their own quirks. The VFL didn’t come around until 1897. I may be wrong, but I don’t think that the rules were truely standardised until the 1990s.

@@shmick6079 I finally started to think about that. Tom Wills parents sent him to the UK for at Rugby school playing cricket and I think Rugby . Then he returned to Australia - so, completely our Aussie game? I’m not so sure anymore. Great vid on KZbin about an old historian talking about Thomas Wills was born here, but went to school in UK 🤔

Thomas Wills who wrote the rules of Aust football had a rugby background , so Im guessing rugby came first . But it is one of the earliest games to have its rules written down and " codified". It was also invented to keep the cricket players fit so obviously cricket is older to , and I dont think it pre dates soccer either.

@@totalsmegma I had to check that. Aussie here. You are correct. Oh and my great grandfather attended Rugby school before he and his family emigrated to Australia 😊. *Aussie Rules seems to date back to the first inter-school game in 1858. *Schoolboys at Rugby School had been codifying laws for over twenty years by then. Rugby is possibly one of the first codes to be set down on paper. Mob football was much older, dating back to the Middle Ages.

Basketballers would last about 2 minutes.....tops. Soccer players around 10 seconds...Rugby players would struggle as their game is 180 degrees, AFL Is 360 degrees. NFL players would be out after the first bump, and a half hearted one at that. Actually, now i think about it soccer players would get half way down the race and turn back crying for mummy.

Fit rugby league players will adapt quickly. I moved to Melbourne and converted from league in a few weeks. My hard shoulder tackling was an asset that made me a good defender and catching the ball under pressure is a common trait of both codes. Kicking with both feet took a while though.

No, this is not like all sports mixed into one. It pre-dates most sports you are aware of. Also AFL is not a sport. AFL is a shortening of the name of football league. Stands for Australian Football League. The sport itself is Australian rules football and basically was created in late 1850's in Melbourne, Australia. If you keep calling the sport AFL you already are heading down a path where you will learn virtually nothing and have a very very superficial take on the sport. You actually have to watch matches in person to learn about the game. Watching short highlight videos on youtube only, is sure fire way to virtually remain clueless.

It is mixed with no other sport because it was the first coded football. It was first before the NRL and it is the best. It is fast and fun and they run for up to 90 minutes a game while keeping all skills. They are elite athlete’s that aren’t afraid of knocks and don’t need to be babied with pads. Welcome to real football and Rugby League only kick the ball if they score a try or want a field goal.

Mickal Naps, In Australia it's NOT ONLY (AFL Australian Football League) as our winter game but also there is our (NRL National Rugby League) as our other winter sport as well too of course. For starters is that Rugby League Football has (13 Thirteen) players per team & their, NUMBERING POSITIONS are, (1) Fullback, (2 & 5) Wings, (3 & 4) Centres, (6) 5/8th, (7) Halfback, (9) Hooker, (8 & 10) Front Row Forwards, (11 & 12) 2nd Row Forwards, (13) Lock, of course. SCORING POINTS, which are a Try, is worth (4 Four) Points & a Conversion after a try is scored is worth (2 Two) Points, A Penalty Goal is worth (2 Two) Points & a Drop Goal (aka) a Field Goal is worth (1 One) Point of course. There are (NO) Line Outs, Rucks & Mauls, in Rugby League Football at all, & in Rugby League Football players can use a Punt Kick (aka) a Torpedo Kick during play but (NOT) to be used for a Field &/or Drop Goal situation at all but a Drop Kick is only permitted for this situation of course. Exactly very same as Rugby Union Football is that in Rugby League Football also there are (NO) Forward Passes of the ball to be allowed at all & also that Offsides are (NOT) allowed at all either of course. There are only (6 Six) Tackles in which a tackled player is after being tackled by the opposing team must play the ball by using his feet to rake the ball to his teammate who behind him waiting for the ball to either to be next ball carrier to run towards the defending team &/or pass the ball backwards to his other team mates and once they either reach the (4th &/or 5th) tackle then the players can kick the ball very deep into the defending team's territory regardless using a Torpedo Kick, Drop Kick &/or a Bomb Kick especially towards the defending team's goal area & besides that Rugby League Football is a more of a slower pace of game which less free flowing of a game of course. Besides that, Rugby League Football Code started in (1895) in Huddersfield in the North of England that was called Northern Union because it came off from Rugby Union Football Code then later on it changed its name from Northern Union Football to Rugby League Football being from (15) players down to (13) players per team of course. But however that Rugby Union Football Code who did not like any their players to become professional players by transitioning from Union to League for payments by playing the Rugby League Football Code but although that Rugby Union Football Code would rather keep their Football Code as amateur as possible by (NOT) paying their very own players of money as compensation while they been away from their very own jobs &/or work because of their football injuries that had suffered while playing of course. But the Rugby League Football Code is manly being played in Great Britain in England & Wales, France, Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea then so many years later on it has been spreading into South Africa, Scotland, Ireland, United States America, Canada, & also in a Number of other European Countries of Europe then it is developing into a Number of other new Countries from Asia, Africa, South America, The Pacific Islands, Middle East like Lebanon, for both Men & Women & Boys & Girls of course.

Mickal Naps to let you both know that (AFL Australian Football League) Aussie Rules Football is (NOT) Only the main winter football code but also their other main rival winter football code is the (NRL National Rugby League) as in the Rugby League Football Code that also being played in winter both here in Australia & New Zealand of course. Rugby League Football Code is mainly being played in Queensland, New South Wales & (ACT Australian Capital Territory) while the Australian Rules Football Code is mainly being played in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory & Tasmania & that's real difference between both Rugby League & Australian Rules Football Codes of course. In both of our (NRL National Rugby League Men's) & also in our (NRLW National Rugby League Women's) Competitions there are Rugby League Teams are the, (1 One) New South Wales based teams that are, Parramatta Eels, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith Panthers, St-George Illawarra Dragons, Newcastle Knights, Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, Cronulla Sutherland Sharks, West Tigers & finally Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. (2 Two) Queensland based teams that are, Brisbane Broncos, North Queensland Cowboys, Gold Coast Titans & finally Redcliffe Dolphins. (3 Three) (ACT Australian Capital Territory) based team which is Canberra Raiders. (4 Four) Victorian based team which is Melbourne Storm. (5 Five) New Zealand Warriors was previously called as their original very old name was called the Auckland Warriors from Auckland, New Zealand. The Rugby League Football Code who got the idea of (SOO State of Origin) from their Australian Rules Football Code counterparts in which that Australian Rules Football who actually did & originally did had that concept of (SOO State of Origin) Australian Rules for example, Victoria plays any of Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia all in Melbourne, New South Wales plays any of Queensland, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia in Sydney, Queensland plays any of New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia all in Brisbane, Tasmania plays any of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia all in Hobart, South Australia plays any of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, Western Australia all in Adelaide, Western Australia plays any of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia all in Perth, But the Rugby League (SOO State of Origin) was originally started &/or established in the Year of (1980) between Queensland & New South Wales in which that Queensland had won & they won most of the State of Origin Rugby League Series more than New South Wales on Record & the General idea of the Rugby League State of Origin Football is that both teams of Queensland & New South Wales must play each other only (3 Three) times & for any of them they must either win (2 Two) OUT of (3 Three) Games &/or (3 Three) OUT of (Three) Games for the whole series regardless Queensland vs New South Wales in Brisbane or in some other place/s & New South Wales vs Queensland in Sydney or in some other place/s once more again as well too & Yes I am a Queenslander (Banana Bender) coming from Mount Isa originally myself & of course I do support Queensland when it comes to any (SOO State of Origin) in Rugby League Football & also in (SOO State of Origin) in Australian (Aussie) Rules Football as well too of course. (NOTE) That both Rugby League Football State of Origins do both have of (NRL in Men's Games) & the NRLW in Women's Games). Both of our Australian National Rugby League Football Teams which for Men's Team are actually called the Australian Kangaroos & for the Women's Team are actually called the Australian Jillaroos who played against Great Britian, France, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea & also in the Rugby League Football World Cup Tournaments as well too of course. (NOTE) The New Zealand Men's National Rugby League Team are actually called the Kiwis & while the New Zealand Women's National Rugby League Team are actually called the Kiwi Ferns, of course. But however, is that I DON'T Understand the mentality of why at all & for what reason/s that people actually do refer our Australian (Aussie) Rules Football Code as (Aerial Ping Pong) at all & people who told me many times verbally before i& also heard that from people before is that our Australian (Aussie) Rules Football is Aerial Ping Pong Football of course.

All these video explanations make one obvious mistake. The bounce. You DO NOT have to bounce the ball. The rules state that, unlike rugby or NFL, you can not run more than 15 metres with the ball. After that you can do almost anything you like with it, except throw it, which is illegal at all times. Bouncing it is the best way to retain possession without breaking stride. Most Aussie kids can run around bouncing a football by the time they can walk. Sometimes girls take a week longer.
