That can literally go the other way, a lot of Europeans wear Nike, Levi jeans, North Face jacket, and even if it is a European brand, it's usually modeled after American dress wear like, ball caps, t-shirts and tennis shoes!

Yes, Europeans teens will try to emulate American style, but once they get out of school, they tend to gravitate to more fashionable attire, if only because women/men in Europe prefer a sharp dressed person over a collegiate style, it's cultural. Also few Europeans outside of gym wear NIKE or Sneakers, again the exception being teens.

Walking is not even perceived as exercise, it's just what you do to get from A to B (or to relax). Never thought of putting on atheltic clothes for walking. Running is a different story.

From my experience that's the single biggest difference between German walking "culture" and the American one. The Yanks think of walking to a place as active exercise and an overly healthy thing, forgetting that walking is literally the standard mode for a human to go anywhere.

I'm a communication consultant and one of my former clients was an American fashion brand (actually a holding incl. various fashion brands). When we held our strategy meetings in their European HQ in Switzerland the clients who came over from the U.S. had a hard time understanding that Europeans have heaps of local and regional fashion brands for all wallet sizes. These own the market here and what is sometimes tough for Americans to understand is, that people here do not desperately wait for any American brand to come here. The most hilarous moment was when we looked at the brand health tracker for one of their sports brands. I explained that European customers are very loyal to their local brands. So my client would have to invest heavily to cut through the clutter. They did not understand. They genuinely believed they just enter the European market and the fact they are an American brand would be enough to be loved by everyone. Like "What is your USP?" - "We're American."🤣 The way people dress is btw directly influenced by how they move about. In the U.S. where people spend more time indoors or in the car, or in the mall there is not so much need to dress for any kind of weather. So shorts, T and sneakers work just fine. While in Europe, many people take public transport. It might be cold in the morning, when they walk to and have to wait at the bus stop. So they need a jacket or coat. It might be rainy and in the crowded tram, someone might accidently step on your foot - white snealers wouldn't be such a good choice in this case. Europeans also tend to dress differently for each occasion - shorts, t-shirt and sneakers are totally fine for actually doing sport or for leissure time, but would be considered too casual when you go to work or meet someone in a public space. People tend to dress less formal vs earlier times, however, they still dress neatly and trendy as it is (1) showing respect to others and (2) showing off a huge part of how you conduct yourself and how you want to be percieved. The latter probably is less of an issue in U.S. culture as everyone is super friendly all the time but everyone deeply distruts each other all the time.

Nearly ... ok. But why should dressing trendy be a sign of respect? Being very trendy only shows you want to hide in the crowd and like to follow others. Whereas an own style shows self awareness, self trust and brave to be outstanding. But other text was interesting and I agree to it.

stylish does not necessarily mean uncomfortable or impractical. We wear sports clothes for sports. Most people here wear everyday casual styles and comfy shoes mostly. Dressing up (such as high heels and proper suits) is mostly reserved for going out or very rare professions.

And all the weight the poor feet have to wear when pressed in unconfortable unhealthy high heels are a torture. Men suits are more loose and comfortable. (And I love ties.) But I ought to wear that women' less loose style which is like knives when sitting. Said elder collegue. Wearing a dress other than strongly fitting Etuikleid was not a 'professional' look, like open hair was not ok, curls were not okay, flowery style ... I was a Consultant and it seems I should wear/look like men but smaller size to pop out boop and bump which makes me unconfortable physically and psychological.

We do have more food regulations in Germany, for example corn syrup is restricted. And there are regulations concerning the meals served in schools and kindergarten / daycare. Which means that even growing up, most kids get used to veggies and a more balanced diet. Of course there are still plenty of sweets and sweet drinks around.

It was on the German news yesterday that a school decided to serve the kids only vegetarian meals. To save money and the environment. And all the parents were cool with that. Honestly who could be against the idea, you can give the kids a bratwurst for dinner when they get home.

We do reflect on our obesity problems. At the moment there are discussions about prohibiting advertisement for unhealthy food that targets children. And every few years there are discussions about a tax on sugar. And there are a lot of programs to encourage people to do more sports.

People in Europe generally dress nice, when to go to the city. Off course its very common to use public transportation or to walk. The good beside effect about walking is good for your health. I am half italien for me its normal to wear nice clothes, when i going to the city only for drinking a coupe of coffee or shopping groceries. Thats in our culture.

loosing weight by walking to do grocery shopping on foot is a real thing. it was what i did on an almost daily bases, then i became disabled and started using a mobilityscooter for doing the shopping only (in the beginning using public transport and walking the rest of the way as always) and i gained 10 lbs in the first month alone. Not all stylish clothes are uncomfortable

Another thing you may not know if not living in germany is that we usually drink water - ofc not all the time but i'd say its pretty normal to drink 2L of water and 1L of soda a day, sometimes even less soda. We dont sweat that much while wearing stylish cloths because we are used to walk alot - your body gets used to that. if you want to be slim, dont eat till youre filled, eat till you think your body had enough, drink water and go for walks (or walk to work) that will overall increase your physique

having lived in both countries - Germany is my home country - I can't really say I agree about Americans or Germans dressing better than the other. there are just different cultural preferences in fit and also a different culture about what kind of styles are preferable for which occasion. yes, Americans with their way to dress tend to stick out a like a sore thumb with their style in Europe. Everything is just a tad too large, too long, too casual. You basically recognize them as Americans before they even open their mouth. On the other hand I've literally also identified Germans just by sight in the US from their clothing style, also because within the US they tend to stick out like a sore thumb and are definitely not perceived as more fashionable. from an American point of view there is just nothing very 'cool' about the everyday German dressing style. again, none of this is due to one group really dressing better or worse than the other, but down to cultural differences what is even considered 'good dressing sense'. ask an Italian what they think of either group's dress, they'll tell you both American and German dressing sense is an atrocity ;) personally, I see pros and cons of either. I really like the functionality factor of German clothing preferences. Nobody will find you uncool just because you put function over style, they'll find it sensible. But I do also appreciate the American way of allowing expressiveness in clothes, eg in shoes, shirts or hats, often in flashy and out there designs and colors, which would not be considered 'age appropriate' in Germany unless you're a teenager or in your early 20s. American clothing sense allows for and appreciates a lot more self-expression. Of course you can wear such things in Germany too, but you'll be considered a bit of an oddball for it.

True. First time i heard a really positive thing about America: allowance for more self expression. I like inventions. I like to dress different. I was treated bad a lot for doing things with my cloth that became trend 10, 15, 20 years later. There is a strong tendency in germany to mob about people who are not mainstream.

I think that it's because of the immigration character of the USA as a country. Two reasons why I think so: 1) Here in Slovakia, the tradition of dressing well when you are in public (or when people went to church on Sunday, wearing their "church clothes" = their nicest clothes) started centuries ago, and it is deeply rooted in our history by generations and generations following it. And people will judge you if you are different. I think that it's similar in many other European countries too. 2) I think that it is much easier to abandon a tradition when you are not anymore in your culture. People of the same culture usually do things the same way and at the same places, around the same infrastructure - like at your local market place on the square of your town, your local church, celebrating some historical event every year at the same place etc. If everyone around you dresses nicely everyday, you will too without even questioning it. If you leave the place where people follow those traditions and customs and you migrate to another place, you will adapt to new traditions tied to different locations and landmarks. There are no more people judging you on the street if you don't follow the tradition, because they don't know or care about your tradition, and if you are not forced into any other strong culture, you start doing your own thing, often the opposite. Europe is a continent where people mostly, in general, stay in their home country or town for generations and develop customs tied to their location and landmarks, and mirror the other people around them. Even if they move to another country, the culture is strong and centuries old and it forces them to adopt it. The USA is an immigration country for the whole world, probably every nation on Earth lives there. People leave their culture, locations and people, and settle in a new one. The USA has such a mixture of cultures, that people don't have this influence of their culture around them anymore and it's easy to abandon it. Then they have a family and don't pass on their traditions, and even if they do, there is no cultural pressure for their children to follow it as much, because (exagerrating a little) every family around them has a different cultural background and everyone is doing their own thing and doesn't care about your thing. Also, comparing to the European cultures, the history of the USA is too short, traditions can take centuries to become deeply rooted. I think that this is the reason why the USA is so similar to the western cultures, yet so different. Even if the Americans now or generations ago came to the USA directly from those countries. There is nothing and nobody holding those traditions and customs in place anymore.

If you are not as obese as many Americans, you can also wear normal clothes for walking because you will not sweat. Walking is one of the most common things, a human body can do and you should be able to do that without seeing it as exercising

Many Germans wear some variety of cargo shorts if it is hot - but not as wide and floppy as u can see with American tourists, and not at every weather. Wearing baseball caps is an imported fad in some circles, but like baseball is not a thing for most Germans, so are baseball caps. White tennis shoes are rather seldom seen in the street, but especially younger German men often wear sneaker-like shoes (however whitish ones are only favored by some mostly not-so-well-off social groups). Jack Wolfskin is one of the bigger brands for outdoor and functional clothing (seated in Idstein, Hesse). Other big brands in Germany would be e.g. North Face (from the US), Fjällräven (Sweden), Mammut (Switzerland) and VauDe (Tettnang, Baden-Württemberg). Some "stylish" clothes Germans wear are nowadays actual "functional clothing" making you sweat less and protecting at the same time against the weather - but they are made to look "normal" and fashionable. And Germany is also much closer to Italy and France with their fashion traditions. (Even in medieval times at least the richer German merchants tended to adopt Italian fashion, even if mostly that of the last year or rather last decade, fashion communication being far slower at the time.) And a T-shirt with a collar would be called a polo shirt (legends says it was used as sports shirt by polo players first).

Up here in Canada, it's pretty much like the US until you hit Quebec. I was born and raised in Montreal, which is very European in it's style (as is Quebec City) I also lived Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam and the dress sense is fairly similar. You can still look good in jeans, it's just a matter of putting in a little effort AKA no ridiculous prints, especially super hero nonsense. As for being well dressed being uncomfortable, not at all; instead cargo shorts, wear dress shorts, a nice shirt (preferably dress with sleeves rolled up neatly) and some casual shoes, think simple vans slip on (black, brown, white NO pattern) vs. runners/sneakers (dead give away as American). Trust me, you're comfortable while still looking good. To simplify it it comes down to this, a study in contrast: Europeans et al will put themselves together before they leave the house, Americans don't care and will stay in pajamas to go shopping. I really whould be interested to know if it was the same way in the U.S. 30 years ago? When I was young, it was really looked down on to wear joggers or leggings (as pants) to school. You where supposed to wear proper pants/jeans/skirt/dress. When I heard from movies about people going shopping in their pajamas I really could not believe that. Of course my daughters wear joggers to school now. I watch some youtubers, the mom wears gym wear often and because they live in a hot climate its biker shorts and a sports bra. You whould not catch many Germans in such apparel, or if only in big cities in the summer maybe. It seams half naked to me, to be honest.

regardless of this video, I would rather say that not all Germans dress well. On the one hand, this has to do with upbringing and also the social environment. My mother, for example, always checked that I was properly dressed before I went to school. She would never have allowed me to go to school in sweatpants. My father also used to tuck my shirts into my trousers for a while and say, "Dress sensibly, otherwise you'll look like a bum". While some classmates came to school in boxers and jogging trousers. This seems to have gotten worse, according to a new study. And socially, if you're unemployed, you don't necessarily have a reason to dress smartly. There are exceptions, of course, but that has to do with the person's upbringing and parental home.

Because you asked about sweating.. At least I'm not sweating as much if I just walk to work (2-3km), because... it's just normal for my body and not a extraordinary activity. Also a lot of people just go got the gym before work and shower there. My last job (white collar, 29th floor in a high rise) even had a shower if you rly needed it after cycling to work or smth like that. (did that a few times a month, had my "fancy" clothes in my backpack or already prepared at my desk) My current job also has one, but no-one ever uses it... dunno if it even works. It's just gettin a bit smelly in the summer lol - but that's just human.

When I came to France for the first time, the difference to Germany was already significant, but then I visited northern Italy. It was almost a shock for me because the men there were surprisingly well dressed, too. No wonder that some cities have introduced a minimum dress code in the particularly touristy inner cities. In Europe, this particularly affects German and British visitors.

I once experienced in Italy that the police, I think it was Rimini, put a group of young people, although they were very well dressed in the traditional way, on our train. Judging by their excited conversations, I think they must have misbehaved. The police probably have other powers. But better than these constant criminal complaints that are distributed here in Germany.

@@MellonVegan, on the Belgian coast we also have a dresscode for the cities. Bikinis/bathing suits and swimshorts are for the beach and at the pool. Even on the promenade along the beach you have to wear clothes. It's just a sign of respect to other people not to go into town in a bikini or swimshorts and to be dressed.

I'm Austrian and I want to say that sweatpants, hoodies, sneakers and similar clothes are for sporting activities only. I would never leave my house wearing something like that except for the foresaid purpose. Even in my nearby grocery store I would be thoroughly ashamed, if someone saw me in this kind of clothing. And baseball caps are by far the dumbest looking headgears ever invented. Every adult wearing one of these abominations reminds me of a silly cartoon character that is begging for being punched in the face. Right now it occurs to me that I don't even own any sweatpants or hoodies (and of course no baseball caps). 😁

@@avr7120 There are plenty of other head coverings and you should only protect yourself from the sun if you are exposed to the sun for a long time, but you should expose as much skin as possible to the sun for at least 20 minutes a day to give the body enough time to produce vitamin D.

Some people wear white tennis shoes here, too, but it's mostly younger people, 30 and younger. There are even some men who wear cargo shorts when it's really hot, but I'd say it's rather rare in cities, and those who wear them do so on their free time, not at work or if they have some places to go. It's more common in rural areas and when people have nothing special to do other than hang in their gardens, walk their dogs, go on hikes and such (although on hikes, long trousers would be better in order to avoid getting stung by insects or having allergic reactions to some plants like nettles, for instance). But most people do dress up a little when they have to go among other people, even if it's only to the grocery store (ok, you see the occasional cargo shorts in grocery stores, too). I don't even own any. Things like the "people at Walmart" pics, where people walk around in their pajamas or in their underwear don't exist here. But it doesn't have to be anything expensive or fancy, either, a pair of jeans, a nice T-shirt and nice, clean shoes will do. For goatees, I'm not sure, but there is a particular style of facial hair, with a moustache and beard, but shaven cheeks and neck, that has a very unflattering familiar name ("face c**t").

America was indeed demolished for the cars, in a literal sense. Try to look up aerial pictures of the large cities mostly from the east and south, that were developed decades or even centuries before the cars were invented, and compare them to aerial pictures that were taken today! Around the 1960s when the interstate was developed, large portions of these cities were demolished to make room for the highways going through the city. (Coincidentally, mostly poor minorities were living there.) Meanwhile, suburbia was specifically designed to make cars a necessity to live there (which coincidentally segregated out poor minorities who couldn't afford a car). I start to see a pattern here... Also, the car industry bought a lot of tram companies, specifically to get rid of them, so people will have no other choice but to buy a car. Here in Europe sportswear (what you call leisure wear) is worn while exercising and maybe at home, but outdoors never. Walking is not exercise, you don't sweat while walking. Well, maybe you do if you're an American because you're so unused to moving that walking is a big exercise. What we in Europe consider everyday casual clothes is what most Americans consider dressing up. To give an example, I watch some American KZbinrs that try clothing brands and often I see them try a dress or a fancier tshirt or something and they say "yes but what occasion would I wear that to". What do you mean, what occasion would I wear that to? I wear stuff like that whenever I go outdoors. I'm not talking about a high fashion dress but just a dress of a few tens of dollars. It's just a nice dress that for us is everyday wear here but in America apparently you would only wear it to like a really, really fancy restaurant or something. And it's not that apearances are more important to European women that American ones, because I feel that American women wear a lot more makeup and spand a lot more time doing up their hair... but then they go out with that nice makeup and hair in yoga pants and a sports bra or some other leisure wear, even to like a restaurant... that I don't get.

Portion sizes in the Netherlands are smaller than the US, especially meat portions. We serve lots of cooked vegetables and/or a salad. Nothing wrong with baseball caps here. But we wear mostly neutral ones without brand logos. T-shirts, shirts, hoodies, polos are quite common too but most of us wear jeans or similar. You won’t see many people with sports trousers. People wearing sport clothes usually are sporting or traveling to or from their sport.

Europe has a very long history of trade (*1) and part of that was textiles, leather and furs even before the Ancient Roman Empire. That clothes get thrown away frequently is a very recent trend. That they are worn according to the most recent fashion is more recent trend as well. Before cotton became affordable linnen was an important type of textile and an important industry in Germany since the early middle ages (possibly even earlier). As a result crafts related to textile were well respected and clothes often reflected the status of a person before societies have changed to become more egalitarian and democratic. Still the way somebody dressed was often indicative of his economic success and social position. In big cities and particularly in industrial centers the way you dress isn't observed much. However in smaller cities and mid-size to bigger towns more people will pay attention to the way someone is dressing. Here in south-west Germany there have been many small to medium size companies producing textiles and clothes. Infact so many that this contributed to the creation of companies building machinery for the textile industry. As a result people tend to dress more nicely and fashionable. And I would say that this is even a bit more perceiveable in Austria and Switzerland - according to my personal experiences. Outside German speaking countries I think dressing well is even more important in southern Europe and France. Americans may be easy to spot by Germans in Germany - but Germans are almost as easy to spot in Italy and France.

Honestly, you just know that you might meet some people you know when you walk (If I only jump in the car to quickly drive to the supermarket, I also often were sweatpants). But in public in Germany you feel kinda uncomfortable when everyone around you is well dressed except you My personal explanation are the older times where everything had to be precise, neat and perfect (even more than today). This feeling „you have to be nice and clean“ has been taught from generation to generation ever since. Today it‘s no longer that strict at all, but parents still tell their children to only go in public neat and well-groomed. At home and with friends you usually can wear what you want. But in Germany life takes place more outside compared to the US. More in public so better dressed😉

Concerning clothes: europeans dress for the occassion, and us germans are the least fashionable on this front. So you'll see many german men wearing cargo shorts, t-shirt and sandals (with or without socks) during summer ... but only when going for a short relaxing walk or other such endeavour. Going for a longer hike? Clothes that are sturdier and will serve you well if the weather changes suddenly. Doing your workout? Sports clothes, but changing back in the next set of clothes after the shower. Going for work? The appropriate clothes for your job, so yes, hoodies 'n stuff for IT, and mom's best choice for engineers. With rules relaxing quickly during the increasingly hot summers. Are there no exceptions? Sure there are.. Some! german tourists are famous for trying to do alpine hiking in the american tourist uniform. But those are idiots going for the darwin award. And most germans will frown upon seeing someone going for groceries in their pyjama... as will almost all other europeans, even more so.

Even when people wear something similar, the size they choose to wear typically gives away who is a tourist. When you drive a car nobody can see your clothes. The car can feel like an extention of the home. So when you drive to a store you might just hop in in whatever comfy clothes you wear at home. However a German dresses knows that they are seen in public when they walk around all day and they also have to dress for the weather, that's why they look more put together. The fact that Germans are somewhat thinner than Americans may also be due to the fact that Germans are more direct and honest with others, especially with family members: "oh, could it be that you've put on a little weight?" is sometimes said among family and very good friends. in a friendly way, but with the hint that that's the way it is. people simply look out for each other. i think few Americans would dare to do that and only think it. When it comes to clothing, the weather can also play a big role. in Germany, it doesn't stay warm as long, so fewer t-shirts are worn. in the city and when shopping, sweatpants are not necessarily considered appropriate. (although this is probably changing more and more with the younger generation).

Germans dress abysmally according to European standarts...I'm currently wearing pin striped trousers (the double breasted suit jacket is on the rack along with the light grey Fedora, I'm working), a white dress shirt with small light pink stripes, a houndstooth waistcoat in black and white and a red cravat with golden flower stiching fixed with bronze pin.... so you can easily guess just why I feel mx fellow Germans dress inapropiately casual - they dress as if they'd have to be prepared for some sort of post apocalyptic survival situation... 😂. The last comment was really funny. As a German, that is fat and dresses poorly most of the time, I can tell it's true, that Germany is neither the fittest nor the most fashionable country. But I also wouldn't say, that America sets a low bar. The impression the poster got, might also have been influenced by confirmation bias. The grass always looks greener on the other side. When I go on vacation, I also think Germany has the ugliest women. But that's not really true. There are plenty of ugly and beautiful women everywhere. On vacation I just do happen, to rather notice the pretty women, because they are exotic to me. Then when I go back my brain just tries to confirm the theory, that women elsewhere are more beautiful and ignores the 5 beautiful women around me, just to pick the one ugly woman and say: "There you go, confirmed!"
