Hi Ryan, There were some things you misheard or misinterpreted, He did not say UK invented the Internet, it didn't, but it did invent the World Wide Web, basically a way to access the Internet. PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) was the first generalized computer-assisted instruction system. Starting in 1960, it ran on the University of Illinois' ILLIAC I computer. By the late 1970s, it supported several thousand graphics terminals distributed worldwide, running on nearly a dozen different networked mainframe computers. Many modern concepts in multi-user computing were originally developed on PLATO, including forums, message boards, online testing, e-mail, chat rooms, picture languages, instant messaging, remote screen sharing, and multiplayer video games.

We get tiny earthquakes in the UK, but they're not comparable to California or Japan. I survived a UK "earthquake". Won't lie, it was very exciting. I had a sensation that the ground had moved, which made me stumble a little bit, and that was accompanied by a very loud sound, like metal scraping metal. And that was it. Nobody died. Our village talked endlessly about it for weeks. The doors of my neighbour's wall cabinets opened suddenly and out fell one of the tinzzZZZ😉

The UK did invent football and rugby (and cricket, too. Look up,rounders, you may recognise it). The reason why we play as separate teams is because we had separate teams and associations long before international associations were formed. Football is an incredibly old game that was played in the streets. It became so rowdy that it was first banned in 1314 by Edward 2nd. It has been banned several times over the centuries, due to the level of noise and violence involved, and was banned from the streets in 1818.

The modern way of playing football undoubtedly comes from England. A basic form, a kind of drift ball, existed before in many parts of the world, not only with you. It has been documented in Turkey since the 11th century, in Italy and France a little later, in China even earlier. And no one knows since when, for example, the Mayans in South America played a similar "game".

Most of European castles served a military purpose. Sure there was a local feudal lord of some kind owning/managing one or more castles, but the goal was to look over the land, collecting taxes, fight off revolting peasants or invading hordes. But you have to think of them as a kind of "OP administrators", who could keep his castle(s) only as long as they were loyal to the king/queen and actually did their job (sometimes they grew too strong and wanted to be king, but that's a story as long as European history)

FYI the "park" is Hyde Park. You can see the magnificent dome of the Royal Albert Hall (Last night of the Proms, Remembrance Service etc), the top the Albert Memorial across in the park - and in the bottom left is a bowling green (proper bowling!) next to the tennis centre. The "awful" climate is supposed to have a lot to do with it. Mild climate = no natural disasters, no droughts, no frozen seas etc - stable food production and population, isolation (since 1066) from invasion and upheaval across Europe. Island nation, seafaring people that produced explorers and navigators, all allowed technology to develop faster than many places. Lots of coal and iron, and canal system to move it all = the industrial revolution.

The UK is an abbreviation, Ryan. Think of the full title, and it'll make more sense: "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland," which is how it has been since the Irish Free State that was formed in 1922 (comprising the whole of the Island of Ireland besides the then counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone - which together, formed the new country to be known as Northern Ireland from the same date), was ratified by the International Community as a Sovereign State that was governed as a republic that had now formally severed all links with the former Kingdom of Ireland and therefore also the successor United Kingdom, as established in 1800 and finally now dis-established in 1949. [Although the Irish Free State was governed as a republic from its 1922 creation, it formally remained a territory of the British Crown - even though it did not recognise that fact, until it was formally granted full independence in 1949.] The six counties that form Northern Ireland continue to recognise that same formality as we speak - even though they lost their independent political status in 1968 and again was governed as part of the UK - which did not establish the current devolved political administration until 1997. Thus the UK Government that sits within the Houses of Parliament at Westminster, London, provides full governance to England and is fully responsible for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland even though it has chosen to devolve some everyday powers to new tiers of government within each of the three countries that it set up in the closing years of the 20th Century. All three operate slightly different governmental models and have different powers devolved to each of them. Overall Budgets are fixed at Westminster, but all three enjoy limited spending powers aimed to better reflect local needs and political priorities.

A few years ago there were stories of "welfare seminars" before people got their flights to Ireland from a couple of different African nations.. Everyone was up in arms about these people being trained to come in and take advantage of the Irish welfare system.. Turns out it was all fiction.. Some BS pub story a reporter overheard and never fact checked so spread it to the whole country.

The UK did not invent the internet (although GCHQ played an important role in packet switching, a key part of the internet). The UK (Sir Tim) invented the World Wide Web. This sits on top of the internet making it useable. So the the servers, protocols, name lookups etc.

Most of those inventions were amazing coming from such a small country, but most of them came after the union with England, schools were pretty rare in Scotland before then, but yes I have to agree there was a lot of talent in that small country, and a generation after the union that talent started bubbling over.

@@kareno6986 it's probably fair to say that the British empire would have been a shadow of what it became if it wasn't for half the inventions, innovations ships and medical knowledge that came out of that tiny population that inhabited Scotland, the industrial Revolution likely would have come later or somewhere else if we had remained separate, it's such a shame so many Scots now want out, we (I'm English) did amazing things together and even though Brits are loathed in many countries we did bring a lot of improvements with us, (many of which came from Scotland) and it wasn't all just bad stuff.

You have forgotten that all this is from a country the size of Alabama , ok now Alabama has a population of 15m were as the UK is 67m ! For a very true story think of a wet day and the family wanted to go for a walk but can't , then the master of the house says " I know lets have a game of tennis ( remembering that it's the original tennis we are talking about ) " but everyone " crys but it's raining " so he says " never mind clear all the furniture out of the HALL ( it's a clue ) and fit up the net " and so everyone had a great time . At the end someone asks what shall we call this game ? " after the house said someone " . Hence Badminton was invented. !

In America many of our TV shows have a British character because it helps sell the syndication to Brits. But I've wondered, assuming you've seen Frasier, does it bother you that Daphne Moon (Jane Leeves) is supposed to be from Manchester when she was born in Essex, and Simon Moon (played by an Italian Anthony Paglia) was born in Australia. Not a chance an American could discern 30 Liverpoolian accents.

I love in London and I love it but we have the most beautiful countryside beaches and villages don't forget we are an ancient country xx Wales has more castles than England xx this stems from the time of the Norman Kings who hailed from France xx I am very proud to be British and ironically a huge amount of current Americans were originally from these shores xx

UK didnt invent the internet. Tim Bernards Lee invented the World Wide Web, which in fact is really a set of protocols and document markup formats that run on the internet. The internet was created by the USA. Initially it was a military project which was then cancelled and taken over and developed by the universities. The "Internet" is by far a bigger and more complex invention than the World Wide Web which wouldn't exist without the Internet. The Internet development started in the 1960's as ARPANET (military) and then a way for Universities in the USA to communicate. However it really became standardised with the inception of a common set of protocols referred to as TCP/IP. The WWW, though relatively simple, has admittedly made a huge impact on the world. Essentially you have Web Servers, Web Browsers, a common protocol (HTTP) and a common document description language (HTML). There is of course more to it now than that, but essentially that is all it is.

For an American who wishes to understand the U.K., you should start with your own country:- USA - UK Location - America - Britain. Both divided into States that were once self governing and still enjoy some limited independence. States divided into Counties. Governance with three way split and checks and balances. Monarch became President Lords became Senate Commons became Representatives Based on Magna Carta (1215) and the Bill of Rights (1686). Trial by Jury and Rule of Law. The Patriot movement that helped to trigger the Independence of the US was founded in parliament back in 1725, later renamed the Liberal Party and so still exists in parliament to this day. Even Baseball was being played in England before the US became independent. Americans like to pretend that they don’t understand Cricket, but in the 19th century the US had an international team.

Britain isn't a country Ryan, glad you corrected yoursef but here's a quick resume for you. England, Scotland and Wales are on Great Britain, which is the largest island of the British Isles. Northern Ireland is on the island of Ireland, which is the second largest island in the archipelago. The United Kingdom is made up of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) plus Northern Ireland, hence its full name of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland .... a bit of a mouthful, which is why we usually call it Britain or the UK. Accents, there are hundreds of accents in the UK most of which arose from seperate dialects/native languages arising from both the invaders and the original Britons. Because of this even we British sometimes struggle to understand each others more difficult accents, so it's no wonder foreigners have a problem. The park you mention is Hyde Park one of many beautiful parks in London and famous for Hyde Park Corner where speakers (members of the public etc) bring their soap boxes and pontificate to the passing people. Finally, if you do ever visit the UK please don't stick to London, the rest of the country has much more to offer and that is where you will find the most "authentic" experience of our very diverse country. Look forward to seeing you here.
