As a Norwegian I'm allowed to make fun of the Swedes all I want. So are the Finns. Mess with the Swedes, though, and you'll suddenly see some brotherly love up here in the North. We are a little weird like that. And yes, Iceland is in Nato. Simplified (very): Rumsfeld decided that Norway should take over the air defence of Iceland after the Iraq debacle and it was no longer the US responsibility, basically. Kind of a downgrade (to put it mildly), but from what I'm told the Icelanders at least appreciate that we're there.

16:40 offensive cyberwarfare is any attack made through digital means. That includes disabling enemy communications (preventing them coordinating) as well as disrupting enemy control systems such as at power plants, or water systems, or food production facilities. It’s like being able to besiege a whole country remotely.
@productjoe4069
@productjoe4069 11 ай бұрын
This can be done surprisingly easily by the way. Take electrical power. It’s made cost effective and reliable by the existence of power grids. These rely on very careful synchronisation between supply and demand, and distribution that is done these days over the internet (previously phone calls over the telephone network, which is also the internet now). Disrupt that synchronisation somehow, or take over a substation’s control computer and get it to suddenly shut down, and you can cause a large blackout that takes hours to weeks to fix. That’s why most countries have prioritised defensive cyberwarfare capabilities.

Not only is Iceland a member of NATO, it's a founding member along with Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States. Note that both of the other Scandinavian nations (Denmark and Norway) are founding members and all Nordic nations except Sweden are now members. The problem is that Hungary doesn't like that we critique them in the EU so they are trying to use that as leverage and Turkey just keeps adding to an agreement that was made and is already fulfilled. They are trying to get as much as they can before they say yes but enough is enough. We did what they wanted in the agreement, now it's their turn to hold up their end of the agreement.

Iron Ore is the natural resource that Sweden is most famous for. Sweden sold ore to Germany during WWII but threatened to blow up the mine if Germany tried to invade Sweden. But selling the ore to Germany came with the threat of being invaded by the Allies. But the Swedish Iron Ore is of high quality and very sought after.

One thing that you miss (understandably) about Sweden during WW2, is that you assume that Germany is automaticly the main enemy. But for Sweden at that time parting with the allies means parting with Russia that has attacked and are at war with Finland, wich was a part of Sweden until 1809. Sweden had sent a great deal of its military equipment to Finland, along with a lot of aid and volunteers to the army. Whilst Germany was highly regarded by Sweden both culturally and economicaly. History is not as simple as you might think.
@OscarSommerbo
@OscarSommerbo 11 ай бұрын
There were also a lot of sympathy for both Germany and Nazism in Sweden at the time. So much so that German leaders vacationed in Sweden during the early stages of the war. Göring famously married a Swedish woman, that has been given too much importance in the explanation of Sweden staying out of Germany's claws, I think. There were many reasons why Sweden dodged the war, first from being invaded and then from being forcibly inducted to the allies. Sweden's animosity towards Russia was the main driver to stay out of the Allies, and Germany only came calling when they started losing. If the Nazis had been a little sneakier, Sweden could have sided with them. But the war crimes that the Nazis engaged in really upset Swedish politicians, and general public. The full scale wasn't known at the time, of course. But it still was too grisly to ignore.

@oscarsommerbo5043 sweden also had a secret weapon to deter the Germans from invade. German bought iron from sweden, and the most important source was the mine in Kiruna. And it was outspoken that if Germany would try to invade, the mine would go boom, I have met people who worked there during the war, and they all tell the same story, they where prepared to blow up the mine with very short notice. We have three big resources that our big companies basically were created from. Iron, wood and free energy! When I say free energy, I mean that we are one of the top countries in the world with the most hydro power. That has played a key role in our development since the rest of Europe had to digg up and burn coal. That was a much more cumbersome process, it required much more work to create the energy that was needed and it was far more expensive. This was one of the big reasons why we outcompeted the rest of Europe when it comes to the iron/steel industry. Because to melt iron, it requires a lot of energy. We also have one of the best iron ores in the world, with the highest iron ore content. This also saves energy, because you don't need to melt as much ore to get the iron you need. You also have less impurities the cleaner ore you have, which also means less energy to refine it. So we had two major advantages compared to other countries and therefore we could outcompete them in the iron/steel industry. Since we had these two greate resources a big iron/steel industry could be created. In other words, we started to build stuff out of iron/steel. That's why we have such a mature and strong manufacturing base, even to this day. But! And a big but, we have another thing going for us and without this thing we would be nothing, even though we have these great resources. That is, that we are one of the strongest democracy's in the world! If you look at countries with greate resources, like Venezuela, who got the most oil in the world. They should technically be rich, right? Well, they are poor as f**k, and the reason is political. They are a dictatorship and therefore they can't utilize the resources that they have. To prove my point. Ask yourself, which countries are the richiest countries in the world? Well, the answer is all the countries in the west. What do they have in common? You guessed right, democracy! All other countries (with a few exceptions) in the world who don't have that are basically poor. Strong dictatorship, equals poor country. Strong democracy, equals rich country. That is how it all works. As I said earlier, this is the big reason why we are so productive, simply because we are one of the strongest democracy's in the world! .. ;) This is why the Nobel price comes from Sweden. Why we have had so much inventors, entrepenuers, so much innovasion, etc. We have been a free country for a long time! So, our greatest resource is our strong democracy! That's the summarization for you.. /Cheers from Sweden!

The reason NATO as such dont sent troups is to not escalate to nuclear blasts. NATO is however very much behind why that war is still ongoing. @tnightwolf

And what many people forget is that Ukraine giving up their nuclear weapons was one of the main reasons why the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty was possible and effective (at least at the time) allowing for a more prolonged peace in Europe. Talking to my friends and colleagues I don't think Sweden's primary motivation to join NATO is fear. We have always viewed Russia as the untrustworthy neighbour to the east, but it hasn't pushed us into NATO before. I think this is a result of many geopolitical parts. Globalization and climate change make us realize all actions have global ramifications. We feel democracies are under threat and that they need to be defended. We are more inclined than we have been for centuries in getting involved in assisting in military conflicts if we believe they are necessary. But more than anything we feel Ukraine's pain and understand how it would feel, so we want to stop it and build alliances against it happening again.
@thehoogard
@thehoogard 11 ай бұрын
While I think most of us Swedes appreciated the existance of NATO, and the stability it brought to the region, there was an argument to be made about having neutral buffer states as some kind of addtional stability. Basically, there was no reason to 'rock the boat' by joining. With the invasion of Ukraine, that argumentation went out the window. So unless you were against NATO as a whole, most Swedes who were previously agains joining, now changed their views. That's my take on it at least. I wasl always pro joining, and arguably, we're more safe now than we were during the cold war, so somethign else must be the reason than just the threat of russia.
@pite9
@pite9 11 ай бұрын
That argument is more valid today than ever. Why should we volunteer to sign up to another cold war between USA and Russia? A country being officially part of Nato doesn't somehow make an invasion less likely, especially not after this conflict. USA and other Nato states had already helped train the Ukrainian army, and since the war, they have aided Ukraine almost to the breaking point. Even if Ukraine had been part of Nato officially, there's nothing we could have done that hasn't already been done, other than sending troops. But then nukes might start to fly. If you think that Russia respects the boundaries of Nato so much that they wouldn't touch any Nato countries, then you're contradicting your own propaganda. Nato membership is irrelevant. What matters is how far both sides are willing to escalate. I think Russia saw a fully militarized Ukraine getting fully integrated into the western sphere as a huge threat to their own security. And that's why they were willing to do what they could to reverse the current course, by dividing the country in two and nullifying the threat. They knew that there was a possibility that this would escalate into nuclear war. I don't think they care this much about Sweden or Finland, and they have no leverage here. In Ukraine they have lots of history and culture that ties their populations together and they are also taking advantage of the US-fueled inner conflict between pro-west and pro-russian ukrainians, using this as a casus belli to justify their invasion. What do you suppose Russia would do if they captured Finland or Sweden? How would they impose their rule over us when we have almost nothing in common? There are no upsides to joining Nato, but plenty of downsides. It obviously puts a target on our backs by joining an alliance that aims to regime change Russia and split the country into smaller pieces. Regardless, we had no reason to fear an invasion, but if things were to escalate over the Baltic sea, for example around Kaliningrad, we might get targeted by russian bombing campaigns, especially so if we were to allow Nato or USA to set up military bases on swedish soil, which is going to happen. It's not like we have any say in the matter.
@thehoogard

@@pite9 Absolute nonsense. The only proof we need is that Russia had no problems invading countries not part of NATO, while staying away from NATO countries. Until Russia does the latter you have no point.
@pite9
@pite9 11 ай бұрын
@@thehoogard Following your logic, Nato is purely an offensive alliance and not an defensive alliance since they have never defended their own territory, but invaded lots of countries. Again, your propaganda isn't even consistent. As for what Nato actually is, it's both the sword and the shield of the US empire. The Ukraine war have proven that Nato will get involved defensively in countries that aren't member states, as long as the US empire have interests to protect there. So obviously we can assume that Sweden would have been defended too, if Russia were to invade, which only a crazy person would think. The reason why Russia have not touched Nato countries like Estonia and Latvia, which on the surface might look similar to Ukraine is because they weren't victims of US regime change. Them moving to the west was more natural, and it was supported by their populations. So Russia would have no means of controlling those territories after taking over them. That isn't the case in Ukraine. The majority wanted to have strong ties to Russia, but the US backed government went rogue after 2014 and haven't listened to the majority will of the ukrainians. They only follow the will of the radical Ukraine nationalists, because USA funded them and financed ukrainian media which propped them up. Zelensky said that he was going to change this, but he didn't deliver on his promises. Unlike Ukraine, the baltic states didn't escalate political tension with Russia. They also didn't go after their russian minorities. And most important of all, they didn't try to build up their armies, and militarily they were never a threat in the first place. In total, the 3 baltic states have a population of only around 6 million. That's around the same as the city of St. Petersburg, and less than Belarus. Ukraine had a population of over 40 millions, without Crimea. And this was after a massive depopulation. The Ukrainian diaspora living in the west is huge and was heavily involved in both the Maidan project and in rallying opposition against Russia, post-invasion. All of these forces could have in a decade or two been rallied against Russia on russian soil if Russia had opted to stay out of the conflict. Many US neocons have admitted that they want to regime change Russia and divide up the country into small pieces. They want to control their vast amount of resources. Russia just couldn't tolerate a strong Ukraine that was militarized and politically and economically controlled by USA, since they would have been a piece that they would play to threaten and maybe even invade Russia.

For theGermans, I think BMW developed some engines for the Germans, but I'm not as sure about other companies that mostly focus on cars now. Leopard 2 and Abrams were actually developed and designed in co-op between US and Germany all up to around KPZ-70 or MBT-70 in US i think development went all up to 1970 or something until US werent happy with German desing and decided to go on their own way. At first Abrams used British 105mm cannon but later they changed to 120mm German gun that Leopard 2 has too. Engine is differend.. Leopard has 1500bhp Diesel and Abrams has basicly a jet engine. i'd say these days both are on par with each others

A bit of insight on the planned build up in Swedens capabilities. Last year plans to boost the military spending to the 2% was made. The Swedish Överbefälhavare (commander-in-chief?) Made a statement of what, among other things should be done with the money. The Gripen planes are to be all be upgraded to the E variant and an additional 60 fuselages were to be added to the force of 100 fuselages present, that doesn't mean all of these are in active service at the same time. The corvettes are to get upgrades and one more submarine will be built. Mlrs systems and loiter munitions are to be bought and forces using these will be established. All this within a 3 year period. That's what I remember on top of my head. After that there have been two other interesting points brought up. The nordic countries are planning to join together under one command when it comes to the air forces. Another article stated that one of the things planned for Sweden if/when in NATO is to be the quick reaction force in the air above the baltic states. Hipe that clears up a few question marks left by this video.

Gripen is specefically built for small and mobile lunch platforms, so you can move everything including the plane on a charge truck to any road, make a road into an airfield and launch it from anywhere in Sweden and just continually move everything, so the plane can flky from spot 1 where crew a is, and fly to spot 2 and do a mission and then fly to spot 3, where team A has now moved the entire platform and can repair the plane. All of this is to cover that giant space.

A major issue regarding not defending Ukraine is that they provide a large amount of the worlds grain. I think that it's that the American public is tired of sending their military overseas and would see it as just another intervention. It doesn't help that many Americans are increasingly dumb because of the politicians stripping the education system there. There are also lots of people that don't care about distinctions unless they are directly threatened. Then there's the fact that some countries in NATO are too politically close to Russia which is incredibly stupid with somebody like Putin in charge. I just hope Ukraine gains a resounding victory and forces Russia to demilitarize in the following peace treaty.

Hostorically speaking there is a difference that isn't talked about much. WW1 didn't threaten an invasion in to scandinavia. When it comes to WW2 we had too much in common with borh sides and didn't have enough of a spine to join the allies. The amount of swedes happily waiting for a na*i invasion should not be understated.

The 2% isn't as easy to just cough up because our money goes to other things that we are not ready to give up on or take money from, such as healthcare, school systems and infrastructure. And more things of course. Now, if you want us to suddenly get the 2% in quicker than let's say 10 years, that means we have to raise our taxes. And we are already top 4 (or nr 2 after Denmark if you add up all the "extras") so that is also not an option. Some of us are not living so luxuriously that we can just raise our taxes from 30% to 40% of our salary, that means we will either live on the streets or starve. So, no. It is not that easy to just raise the % spent on military in Sweden.

So EU is holding of funds. That is one of the reasons. Both Turkey and Hungary is making our NATO membership political. We (Sweden) are not surprised.

8:36 Swede here - just FYI the Feb 24th 2022 invasion may have been the last nail in the coffin - however since the early 2000s Sweden has had several close encounters with russian fighter aircraft (flying into swedish airspace, approaching swedish fighters so close they nearly crashed), one of those "incidents" was the reason why Sweden reinstated mandatory military service for both genders in 2014. To summarize, we already knew Russia was a threat, and was testing us early on - but the Ukraine war was the final confirmation that Russia was off its rocker (again). Russia was threatening us and our neighbour nations long before the Ukraine, and Georgian war.

First and foremost. Sweden have not had an neutrality policy or been neutral for 200 years. We have had an non aligned policy with the goal to be able to chose neutrality when a conflict arise. The reason to why sweden now applied to membership in NATO is that the ones who wanted us to join took their chance when people whete scared rather than thinking for themselves.

I have no idea why the Wareography video dude so interchangeably is referring to the country Sweden by saying. Stockholm. Yes it’s the capital, but Stockholm doesn’t have their own military force or political precedence… Also pronouncing Kaliningrad as “Kalingrad” drew away a few points. Now we are members of NATO! Fun fact, the area of Roslagen in Mideast of Sweden is thought to be the origin of the name of Russia, as “Rus” settlers from the area in the Viking days founded the Kiev realm and Novgorod. In Finland Sweden is called Ruotsi. Using Putins logic from the Tucker Carlson (also a Sweden descendant) pointing out history as a reason why Ukraine is a part of Russia, Sweden could equally have the rightful claim of Russia!😂

6:10 Technically speaking, the risk of sweden being invaded is probably alot higher as a member of nato, which is in conflict with russia. While neutral, Russia respected us, kept sending subs to spy and map out our waters (just to end up stranded on our beach), just to keep up with our increasingly efficient invasion-repelling military built for decades. Our neutrality was no worry to putin, and i'm sure he knows about the history between our countries. As a member, we are now a potential threat. Remember, until recently, both finland and sweden was not in nato, but had their own military alliance agreement. I would assume Putin feels alot more threatened now due to his entire western border now being solidly held by Nato members.

The NATO spending goal was set at 2% of GDP at a conference in Wales in 2014, but it is important to note that it was a goal, not a target. No member would be penalized for missing the mark. And it is "military spending" since all NATO countries except the US has universal health care we can't track something like the VA separately, so we can't classify care to ex-military personell as a military spending. Sweden passed a law prior to applying to NATO that defense spending should hit 2% by 2028, I knew then that a NATO membership was planned. The various troop numbers presented are technically correct but also very misleading. Many militaristically minded Swedes likes to portray Sweden as defenseless due to meddling politicians, that isn't quite true, our standing Army for instance were never reduced to 10 000. If it were, the Norwegians could have invaded and won. Sweden's primary benefit to NATO is a low-cost alternative to the US air supremacy fighter with JAS 39. And geography, we would trap the Russian navy in port. Once Sweden is in NATO, Russia will be screwed, they will be relegated to their true place a minor power along the lines of Spain and Italy. Russia's navy is a joke, but the loss of transit opportunity in the Baltic completely neuters it. But realistically the difference is only in writing, since Sweden has been in NATO light(Partnership for peace) for nearly 3 decades the change is a mere formality. Turkey hates Sweden for our treatment of Kurds and more specifically PKK members, Turkey considers PKK terrorists, the Swedish Left (gross generalization) considers them freedom fighters. However, Erdoğan has promised that after the election that he would drop his objections. Hungary's PM Victor Orbán, takes his cues from Erdoğan and Sweden has repeatedly called out Orbán and his government for human rights abuses and mistreatment of refugees fleeing war, Sweden has even made noises about bringing it up in the EU human rights court. It is expected that if Turkey drops their objection (Sweden has made some concessions to Erdoğan) Orbán would drop his objection too.

Sweden has plenty of good natural resources. One of the more obvious ones are our vast forests and all of the industrial uses it can be used for. Lumber for sustainable houses in the future and manufacturing of consumer goods, paper, chemicals used in other industries, synthetic fuel among other things. A second huge resource are our northern iron-mines. And on the topic of mines, surveys have recently found sizeable what are known as "Strategic Metals"-deposits that are due to be exploited in the coming years. These include rare earth minerals highly sought after and needed in the manufacturing of modern technology including batteries for electric vehicles, computer parts and the like. Yet another big industry in the frigid north of Sweden is computer server halls housing the hardware that hosts the internet. Websites, storage, back-end utilities for multi-national corporations and the like. The main reason for this being an ideal location for such businesses being that the relatively low ambient temperatures at these latitudes makes for much greater ease of cooling for these highly heat-intensive and generating activities. Also there is an abundance of relatively cheap electricity with which to power these facilities. Also, Yes, Sweden is not directly connected to the Arctic, however airbases in the north of Sweden can be utilized to reach the northwestern parts of Russia like Murmansk for instance. And yes, Norway does indeed wrap around the entirety of Scandinavia all the way up to bordering Russia.

Say if 100k people with assault rifles and then on the other side a couple long distance missles, the men with assault rifles can't do much at all expect shotting blindly and trying to figure out where it is coming from. But when they do thousands of men has already died so men mean nothing much in war, sure it is a vital piece but it is a less important piece if u look at all the other important factors.

Take what I am about to say with a grain of salt When the war started in Ukraine I got a gut feeling that it might have been a plot in the higher order of schemes to get countries to join in under NATO a a small step in a longer vision of the "One world order" that they have been working towards, that is US and Russia working together and Putin wanting to leave a better footprint in the world than earlier leaders, that is without gaining immeditate glory to his name right after his death This is just a very vague hypothesis, a hunch from learning a lot of how the US has operated in the past, like for example how Al Qaeda and ISIS were a product of the CIA, a mistake on their part starting with "Operation Cyclone" which was meant to end the cold war but gave rise to extremist groups I am not trying to convince anyone that it is what is happening with Ukraine, just that it is not a negligible possibility since there has been proof of similar kinds of scheming before and a few hundred thousand deaths has never been a problem for world leaders if it is for the "greater good"
