Why Israel is in deep trouble: John Mearsheimer with Tom Switzer

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on 29 September 2023 that “The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades.” That all changed on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, which unsurprisingly invaded Gaza to destroy Hamas.
After more than six months, it appears to many that Israel is losing its war in Gaza. At the same time, Israel is fighting Hezbollah on its northern border, relations between Jerusalem and Washington are strained, and the International Court of Justice has ruled that a plausible case can be made that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
Meanwhile, there is great danger of escalation across the region, as the fighting between Israel and Iran makes clear. Indeed, there is a possibility the United States, which is already fighting the Houthis, might end up in a war with Iran, which neither country wants.
What might be the lasting consequences of these conflicts? Who will emerge weaker and who stronger? And what does this crisis mean for U.S. foreign policy in the region, Ukraine and East Asia?

He also asserts that the Israelis are not foolish or irrational actors. However, if they are indeed intelligent and calculating, then how can one reconcile this with the notion that they are pursuing the impossible objective of ethnic cleansing? I think this guy is incredibly biased, simply with the language he uses and what he chooses to focus on. Not one condemnation or acknowledgement of the extent of how terrible oct 7th, he only ever refers it as an attack. But then he does refer to a few alleged Israel actions in a derogatory fashion (subtly, but its there). I'm not saying Israel is white on white here, but I don't listen to people who have clear biases in their choice of words on subjects they are supposed to be "experts" on. Did Mr. Mearsheimer claim that ethnic cleansing was impossible, or just that defeating Hamas without it was impossible while pointing out that the current campaign to evict Gaza has been a dismal failure? Those are very different things. Regardless, one doesn't need to be foolish or irrational to pursue a long shot. Ethnic cleansing may be the least impossible solution here, from the perspective of the powers that be in Israel. Apartheid cannot last; it was bad before and October 7th showed it's failings quite dramatically. You cannot have an integrated, democratic, Jewish state with a majority of Muslims. The two-state solution is highly unpalatable for Israeli leaders, for reasons mentioned, and even if they were willing to grant sovereign statehood to Palestine you still need build a viable Palestinian state out of Gaza and the West Bank. Maybe the increasing backlash against Israeli's Gaza offensive and the recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by Ireland, Norway, and Spain are signaling a shift, but I think Netanyahu's coalition still believes they can continue on their course and eventually kill or displace enough Palestinians to get some semblance of the Israel they want. They're still in power in Israel, and Israel still has a lot of leverage. The world is distracted with tensions elsewhere. Cleansing Gaza might take longer than expected, but is it irrational to believe that turning the strip into hell will eventually depopulate it? Or perhaps they have acknowledged their goals are impossible and are simply past the point of no return. If you can't change course while saving face and saving face is the way you stay in power, a doomed endeavor that can be dragged out indefinitely may be entirely rational. Don't need to be irrational to have been wrong, or shortsighted.

When one was raised to love &’believe in something like Imwas about Israel, to find out it was almost all a lie, well , its like coming home early and finding your spouse in bed with someone else. However, I don't know what scholars you listen to, but I have found that the people who are real experts, the really top people in their fields, are usually very clear and present their ideas in a clear and concise way. In my experience the"secondary" sources of information, especially on the internet, are much more likely to present information that either has errors or has been spun in some way. The stereotype of the scholar or scientist who speaks in a way that regular people can't understand is harmful. Many people today do not want you to think or listen to facts or reasoned opinions. If you think of "experts " (a pejorative term to some people) in this way - then why listen?

I happened to have been in Israel twice : in 1978 for more than 5 months, and in 1981, this time just for 6 weeks. During this last stay I realized that the approach and attitude from the side of Israel towards the Palestinians was the same as the approach of Nazi Germany towards the Jews. The attack led to a collapse of those stocks and earned those traders billions of dollars. Which means some people knew that October 7th was going to happen and took advantage of that information to get rich.

In my opinion, Israel let its guard down because of the Iron Dome. They assumed that Hamas would only fire rockets that could be intercepted, because that is what Hamas always did in the past. In warfare, it's called "learning the lessons of the last war," where people assume the future will always align with the past. Basically, Israel underestimated their enemies and didn't think Hamas was capable of such an attack.

not to say your point isn't wrong about Israel but it would make a tiny dent nationwide given how much infrastructure costs, and overall because of countries like Saudi Arabia the US has a net gain from making and selling weapons to other countries. What's mainly holding the US back is its domestic military that costs 100s of billions every year with zero profit made (unlike the weapons being sold to other countries). If you want taxes not to skyrocket and have better infrastructure that is what you should be attacking, the US's own military as oppose to the weapons it gives to others (with Israel and Ukraine being some of the few exceptions).

Mearsheimer is not ignorant, but he is ignoring the occupation dynamic, which has never gone poof or become a summer day the way he is suggesting. A person that puts an animal in a cage (animal is a word some Israelis use to describe Palestinians) and then continuously uses a stick to instigate and enrage the animal by poking and teasing it and then be surprised when that animal gets a chance to bite him.
