One thing that was glossed over a bit (only briefly mentioned) was the influence of outsiders. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Italy was an almost constant battleground for France, Austria and Spain. (First Spain and Aistria were controlled by the Habsburgs, later Spain and France by the Bourbons).

Population growth is exponential, limited by resources like food. Food has an effect on reproductive ability. If nothing else changes, but the fertility rate rises, the population grows. (of course there are other factors, like how early people start reproducing, how many reproductive years the live, etc)

The reunification of Italy really began when Napoleon upset the old order. Even though the old states partly came back, the idea that unity would be a good thing still energised people.

The papal states existed because the Lombards who swept from north to south were unable to conquer Rome (see Pope Gregory the Great) and ended up bypassing it. This accidental tripartite division lasted for a thousand years in different forms.

The reason the Papal States was shaped like that and 'split Italy in two', is explained in another video by King & Generals on the Great Schism. But in short, it's shaped like that due to the Donation of Pepin.

I believe his question is why did pepin give thise lands instead of lets say rome and florence area and keep for himself a continuosus realm

@@jonC1208 Because Florence wasn't important, it was pretty much abandoned at that time. Ravenna was very important because it was the capital of the Western Roman Empire, and also under East Roman rule, the seat of the East Roman governor (Exarch). Therefore it was highly important for the East Roman government to keep a landbridge to Rome where the Pope was, so they heavily garrisoned the mountains in between. When Pepin donated lands to the Pope, he just gave the Pope what had previously been held by the Exarch, 'restoring' the old status quo, but giving it to the Pope instead of Constantinople.

@@McJibbin No problem, glad I could clear that up. You should still consider checking out that Great Schism video at some point though. It covers a lot of essential stuff other videos gloss over. A very fog-of-war clearing video if you may.

Kings and Generals is doing an Italian Wars series, if you're interested. It starts where this video ends, and follows the decades of turmoil that resulted mostly in how Italy was before unification. You should give it a go (warning: Italian politics is extremely confusing, especially that period: a lot of actors doing a lot of things all at once, it will be hard to follow. It's interesting though).

After occupying Ravenna, the Lombards tried to conquer Rome but the Franks intervened and destroyed them. In 756 Pepin the Short gave back to the Pope all the territories that the Lombards had occupied. The Papal States were born.

as a population grows it's growth accelerates, America jumped from 350 in 1610 to 331,711 in 1710 and it has been accelerating ever since at a increase rate of approx +100,000 per 10 years, ie year 10 growth = +100,000 year 20 growth = +200,000 year 30 growth = +300,000. give or take .

the papal kingdom, was practically a vestige of the western Roman empire, and went from coast to coast since the capital was no longer Rome, it only had spiritual power, while the real capital had already been Ravenna for some time

well it was normal to have A LOT of children at the time, it was for multiple reasons, but for one it's a practical reasons, infantile mortality was reaaaaally high at the time so it's more safe to have lots of children because if one or two died, you still have 5 or 6 children to "replace" them, and of course when the quality and the quantity of disponible food is increase, the infantil mortality decrease

They couldn't agree on a common size for spaghetti noodles ;-) "The Agony & The Ecstasy" movie and "The Black Rose" movie are good cover for this period.

The size of the spaghetti simply depends on the type of sauce you want to use with it. So no, no Italian would say that a spaghetti should have a unique size.
