Audio sounds great. Interesting kit. I’ve seen a lot of “vehicle” survival kits that make use of a metal coffee can and an improvised candle made of a can of crisco cooking fat with a wick. I think the main intent was you had a shelter (interior of the vehicle, with a cracked open window) and you would focus on keeping it warm and the kit revolved around the source of heat/flame/light. Snow could be melted for water over it. Other useful bits and bobs would be packed into the space in the coffee can and the plastic lid put in place. I think the Boy Scouts recommended this type of kit as it was readily assembled from common materials and cheap. Great video.
@whitetailsurvival24309 күн бұрын
That’s an awesome idea coffee cans are fairly tough and having a large fuel source like Crisco would definitely last a long time. Using the vehicle as the shelter is the best solution for 80 percent of the population the seat cloth and foam plus the headliner and floor carpets could definitely be used to insulate your body if necessary. There is a lot of good information in that little survival guide that came in the top of that cooking pan.

That kit is in such great condition! Not one I've seen before. That massive candle made me lol. But so satisfying to see the 40-yr.-old paper match strike first try! 30 years ago my brother flipped his car and had to walk 3 miles in a blizzard to get home so after that I made a bunch of winter car safety kits and gave them out as Christmas gifts. So if you ever see a survival kit in a red sixpack cooler bag for sale, it might be one of mine haha. Thanks WS!
@whitetailsurvival243010 күн бұрын
Haha if I see one I will jump on there and buy it up and review it. The candle was hilarious to me also I expected other stuff to be in there but it was literally just a huge candle in a baking tin. It is awesome that the matches lit instantly the new matchbooks are nowhere near that good. That’s a great idea to make kits up and give them out for gifts for family. I keep a survival kit in each one of our vehicles plus my edc bag is with me I like to be prepared anyway I can. Thanks for coming back again and commenting it I appreciate it more than you know

@@whitetailsurvival2430 Yes. Kit philosophy is difficult, debatable, and extremely challenging from a business point of view i.e. balancing supply logistics, quality, profit, appeal, etc. I would like to see a Pareto approach, where the kit’s contents could help solve 80% of problems. By now, we should have the data to figure this out.

Really like this kit, or the idea of it! What else does one need, in a car in winter, in case the weather turns bad. This is not for outdoor people, it's for "normal" people on normal streets. One might get stuck in a snow storm, and needs to wait a while until help can reach them. All one needs in this case is something to stay warm (space blanket + candle), have something warm to drink (tea + candles and container), collect water (bags with snow, let them melt in the car) and a way to signal. The idea of this kit is great! With the included instructions, everyone knows how to use the kit. For myself, I'd add another form of signaling. A big red flag or something. Just to be more visible. And maybe something small to eat, like an energy bar (even if it's just for moral). Other than that, I think this kit is quite complete - especially in combination with everything else that's in the car already. The general categories of items is great!
@whitetailsurvival243010 күн бұрын
Yes your right I would love to see them revamp this kit as a new sale. It would be awesome I would buy one. It is an awesome idea to have a bit of food in there just like the best glide ASE ration pack that was a cool one. I went over that kit acouple months ago. The candle in this kit is like a 32 hour candle. This is a good kit thinking about the common person. You don’t need to have any advanced skills to use it. An updated kit with a sol escape bivvy would be even better to update the kit.
@robertanderson127210 күн бұрын
Instead of a flimsy space blanket i would keep a wool blanket instead also maybe a couple bottles of water instead of trying to melt the snow
@natha_ow10 күн бұрын
@ Yes, absolutely! Always have a wool blanket in my car (and another blanket, actually), as well as a few liters of water. As an emergency kit, the provided gear is great, though. It should only be an addition to what is already in a car. Leaving without a blanket in the car in winter basically means leaving unprepared. In general, I would argue that a survival kit is for, well, survival. Like a terrible situation. Not for normal day use. Worst case basically. And a backup of a backup.
@whitetailsurvival24307 күн бұрын
@robertanderson1272 that’s a great idea this kit is definitely a kit that could be used as a supplement to more items in the vehicle. I love the idea of having a wool blanket in there. I would use the space blanket to sanction off a smaller area in the car so the candle has a smaller area to heat up! Then just wrap up in the wool blanket
@whitetailsurvival24307 күн бұрын
@natha_ow your absolutely right this to me is just the very basics and the utmost minimum limit that should be in your car! It’s definitely a supplemental piece of gear. I personally carry an edc pack with me that’s loaded with edc and survival gear in it. My wife’s car does have a bag that I built in the trunk with gear and a good blanket plus a spare set or warm cloths.
@dougbotimer800511 күн бұрын
Modern version would be the Best Glide Emergency Ration Pack. One thing I’ve wandered is how much a Mylar blanket would help inside a vehicle? I keep a UCO candle lantern in my kit. Feel like a candle is the least dangerous flame inside a vehicle, insuring windows are cracked for ventilation. Of course, a 12 volt electric heater, like a truckers lunch box, would be safer, if it is safe to run the engine and keep the battery charged.
@whitetailsurvival243011 күн бұрын
O yea I did go over that kit also. I loved that kit. For some reason a few people didn’t like it. I love to have a source of food with me in a situation like that! An extra heat source in a vehicle is a hard one to come by without the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning but it’s possible I would like to test out the space blanket in a vehicle to see how the work. It probably wouldn’t hurt to keep a detector in there with a set of battery’s just to be safe.

For some privacy I use those foil reflective window sheilds on all the windows and this winter I really found out how much those insulate the windows. Easily 15 degrees warmer inside with 2 people. If I was to use a mylar blanket and some tape to make a shell inside with a candle I'd say it be pretty warm.

Hey, Brent! Morning, sir! We have 3degrees F here right now so you have us beat! "Real feel -5". Not sure why you're up at this minute but raising my second coffee to you! Great vid to wake up to! Thank you! The sugar is eternal. Sugar never goes bad. It's actually an antiseptic. Even the hard candies that turn to liquid in old survival kits are still good. The old military kits and life boat rations etc used to tell you to not bother unwrapping the old cellulose wrappers, just chew them up. Cellulose is a beneficial dietary fiber. Plastic, not so much so. Same goes for soggy bouillon cubes. Don't bother unwrapping, just boil them as is. The tea is heat pasteurized like all tea. If it's not molded, it's good to drink. Tea loses flavor with age, though. I've got teabags in thirty year old kits that I wouldn't hesitate to boil up if necessary. Car kits...my constant suggestion is a twelve pack of assorted Chef Boyardee and a flat of bottled water....a good wool blanket....and a pretty bog standard car kit with a solid fuel stove like an Esbit or a Coghlans or a Firedragon or an alcohol stove like a Trangia or a Redcamp etc. That kit would be pretty easy to replicate and improve on, though. Great vid, bud!

I like the idea with the giant candle, maybe I will make something like that
@wjf21310 күн бұрын
If you do make a candle like this, make sure you add MORE wicks to it or better yet use those cotton wicks for oil lamp that are flat and wide, so you get a much bigger and hotter flame to heat up a cold vehicle. With six small round wicks, you're going to get about 600 BTU's max worth of heat and a vehicle heater puts out around 12,000 BTU's, so do the math on what you need to stay warm enough to survive. Another little trick I learned, is to run some steel wire up the flat wick. Kind of like you're sewing with wire, and 2 or 3 runs of that wire the length of the wick. This will give the wick support and it won't flop over when the wax around it starts to melt, and the wick loses the support of the wax. Of course this means more CO in the vehicle as well, so fresh air becomes and even bigger deal to watch for. Also, use bees wax. It has a better chance of not melting if left in a hot car and it lasts longer too.

It would probably help also to sanction off one part of the vehicle as the area that you’re going to stay the duration of the emergency situation. If you go to the back seat and put the space blanket across you and light the candle underneath you it will warm up just the area you are in. You can wrap up in a space blanket and light a tiny tealight candle and it will warm that blanket up enough to keep you alive. You could do the same thing with that candle. The directions said if you light 3 wicks it will last 32 hours and if you do all six it will last about 20 hours. Take into consideration also you could use the seat cloth, all the foam in the seats, the headliner, floor carpet, trunk carpet, and all kinds of stuff in the vehicle to insulate your body. If it was life or death I would definitely be willing to rip up all the seats in my truck to survive. I made a few candles with jute twine wicks they seem to work great the best way to test the stuff is trial and error!

You really have a extensive amount of survival kits. I wasn't even aware there were that many different types. The more i watch the more i believe the only way to get a useful kit is make it yourself. In most store bought its either very cheap gear or utterly useless. Plus your kit needs to fit your environment but also the season. After a few bad weather an i was in Baltimore city during the (unrest) not what we called. I now keep a backpack basically a weekend camping pack. Ive been training with my dog putting in miles. Im getting ready to go on a 72 hour tryout the gear mission. Im gonna try filming but im very uncomfortable around cameras. It's strange how i can talk to anyone even crowds. But put a cameras in front of me i go blank. Any suggestions would be appreciated?
@whitetailsurvival243010 күн бұрын
O yea it’s definitely a little different talking to a camera. It feels odd because your not talking to anyone and your not getting any responses or reactions from peers or a crowd. I’m the same way as you I can talk to just about anyone, anywhere, anytime. The only real way I know to break that real camera awkwardness is to make a few videos. Even if they are short ones and you never post them. If you record them and watch them yourself then you can watch it and say “why am I doing/saying that” or “ why am I acting weird here”. I’m still trying to break two bad speaking habits right now and I’ve been doing this for almost a year now. #1 I say other than that way to much and #2 it’s impossible for me to stop saying “ummm” or “uhhh”. But the more I watch my own videos, it makes me More aware of it and helps me to think about doing it less. Besides the points, I do generally like to see what companies pack into these little kit. It’s very interesting to me and even about 10 years ago there were far more of these little kids for sale online. They really lost popularity over the last few years, you are definitely correct stating the fact that building a kit. it’s going to be a far better solution than buying one that way it can be catered to your environment and your skill set.

11:53 this kit is one of the best examples of why it’s imperative that people do a little research and then build their own survival kit. It’s not that there is anything wrong with these items per se. They’re actually all reasonably helpful in some emergencies. But what about: •knife •water purification tablets •cordage •water filter •signal mirror •light •needle, thread and safety pins •multi tool •shelter •Bandaids •hand warmers •duct tape •lip balm/ Vaseline •electrolytes •anti diarrhea •wipes •compass •fire starters (a Bic, ferro and some tinder) •pencil, pen & paper and so on and so on. So what’s the best thing to do with one of these vintage Red Cross kits? (Or a vintage REI kit or Eddie Bauer or Boy Scout?) Add it to a backpack or duffel bag along with the items that I listed and some food. Plus no one ever wished they didn’t have mosquito netting and a sleeping bag. Based just on this video and my comment pretty much anyone is 75% of the way there to completing a decent vehicle survival kit. No matter how inexperienced. Best wishes. PS: thanks Whitetail for another great video

Thanks for coming back, watching, and commenting again! I thought the same thing about the kit contents until i realized this kit was designed to be put in a car and used by normal everyday people. I’m thinking the kit was designed back then to use the car as the main shelter system, the candle as a heat source/ water heater, the tea to warm up your insides, sucrose tablets as a sweetener or snack, the flagging tape to show that your in distress or to warn the cars there, matches have their own purpose, the waste bags are for trash and turds and the tissues are for the same thing. It would have been a good kit if you had minimal survival experience and decided to stay in your car till rescue comes. I do agree that the kits like this should be added to a bag or larger kit for people that have more experience. I wouldn’t expect an old lady that never had any experience to hop out of her car in a snow storm and grab her survival kit and hoof it off into the forest with a compass. I would say 80 percent of people would be a lot safer to stay put in their car if at all possible. It wouldn’t hurt to keep something like this in your vehicle with a sleeping bag extra cloths and a better source of heat. Not having skills will get someone killed in the wilderness far faster than being stuck in the car. Your input is always awesome though I appreciate the well thought out comment!
