Rodeo clowns are trained to distract the bulls and maneuver them away from the riders so that the riders have time to get up and get away. It's actually a position of enormous responsibility.
@NorthernXY2 ай бұрын
Immediately was about to post about clowns, your post was on top so didn't need to. It's something most Americans don't really know about, let alone the rest of the world. Rodeo clowns are the scariest clowns, but for a completely different reason than regular clowns. Did I miss the "clown" barrels? The number of times I've seen a rodeo clown dive into one at the last second before the bull got him. Then have to wait for the bull to calm down before the rodeo clown is safe to crawl out. Grew up in a American West family: rodeos, cattle drives, guns, bows, hiking/hunting in the wilderness, making it back to base camp at night by internal GPS and the stars. Could take out whistle pigs at 400 yards. Some think it's inhumane, but the problem is horses and cattle can break an ankle/leg if their hoof falls into one while running. EDIT: Rodeo clowns are like pre-Bronze Age Collapse Minoans (modern day island of Crete off the shore of Greece), where the Minotaur (human body, bull head) story took place. They have frescos showing they'd stand their ground against a charging bull, then at the last second when the bull lowered its horns to strike, the Minoan would leverage the bull head to help them leap over the charging bull.

A lot of times at the beginning of a rodeo they will have a prayer for the safety of the people involved. It can be dangerous, but it started as a demonstration of the actual skills people needed to work on ranches in the 19th century and the work was equally dangerous. And people did it every day.

Rodeos are such great fun! There are big and small rodeos in a lot of the states -- maybe all of them. One of the biggest is the Pendleton Round-up in Pendleton, Oregon. Book the minute tickets go on sale -- including accommodations.

I am so glad you enjoy rodeo, Andre. It really is a culturally American sport. Bullriding is the epitome of rodeo skill. My grandfather was a champion calf roper, held the world record for 2 weeks at 4.2 seconds (a LLlloooooong time ago). Those two guys out there with the bull riders are "Rodeo Clowns", or "Bullfighters". They are the most highly skilled professionals you'll ever want to meet. Their PRIMARY concern is the safety and rescue of the rider immediatly after the ride. Whether the contestant has lost their seat, or if they're dismounting, the bull is likely to attack and hurt him. The clowns' task is to distract and control the bull, covering the rider's escape and/or rescue. You saw this when the youngster got his hand caught in the bull rope, and the bullfighter had to get up close and personal with the bull to pull the rope free and release the rider. They do absolutely amazing work! I love your videos! Keep at it, friend! Grace to you!

My heart swells with pride when the horse riders come out flying the colors, the National Anthem and the prayer said for all the riders! Guys can be gone for months, riding the circuit. Women sit at home and wonder if the next ride he takes will be his last, (or worse, will he spend months in hospitals, learning to walk again?) A lot of women can't take it. Edit!: Guys frequently get knocked out if they take a horn to the face. Horns don't have to be long to be effective.

Rodeo clowns use pack tactics -- the same as wolves -- to avoid getting hurt. So they never work alone. They dodge in to distract the bull from one another, forcing it to keep switching targets, and it eventually gets confused. They can lead it that way. They're there to save the riders and are highly respected by everyone, because they really do save lives. There are pretty terrifying video complications of PBR wrecks.

@wandapease-gi8yo2 ай бұрын
Andre, the bucking horse riders have to hold on with only one hand. As they come out of the Shute they have to raise their heels and spurs to the horses shoulders and back as many times as possible until the horn blows. This determines their score to determine the winner of the competition. The Abraham’s bull rider holds on with one hand and stays on for 8 seconds. The clowns are there to herd the Bull away from the fence and to keep it away from the Cowboy when he comes off so it doesn’t stomp on him or even gore him with one of those horns if the Bull is feeling really mean. These animals are not semi wild,they are owned by stock companies which have an interest in keeping them healthy for the next rodeo on the circuit. The rider gets points depending on how difficult his ride was to stay on for that last 8 seconds.

My family has worked the Rodeo grounds since I was 14 years old, 22 years later and still working for Waggoners. We also ride at the entry every year, its basically hundreds of people on horses following each other zig zagging the whole arena before the cowboys come out and do their routines, I usually carry the Waggoner Flag, but I have also carried a Ford Flag they are one of the biggest sponsors, they also give away several Trucks on the last night of the Rodeo.

The two men diverting the bull are called bullfighters. Their job, once the ride has ended, is to attract the bull to themselves and away from the rider. But they must also do what must be done to protect the rider. It's possible for rider to have his hand caught in the tightly wrapped roper that is around the bull. In that case, the bullfighters have to try to leap onto the bull and release the rope. It's not always simple or easy. Bullfighters are experienced and while they are sometimes thrown into the air by the bull, they usually land on their feet. The bulls are also highly experienced and know that they are supposed to leave through the gate. They buck hard because, as prey animals, anything on their backs seems like a lion. They are not natural killers , but that doesn't always stop them from getting a lick or two in on whoever they can catch or losing their temper and going for the rider. The bulls are high value and receive excellent care. They are rodeo celebrities themselves, and their records are kept and often shown before a ride. They are prized according to how aggressively and cleverly they buck. Half the rider's points come from the bull's performance. So you want a good, hard bull to increase your points. However, there are a few that are so rank that no one really wants to ride them. The ranchers that supply bulls and other rodeo stock make very good money.

I remember the Montana PRCA finals rodeo in 87 or 88. One of the bull riders put in what’s nicknamed a suicide wrap. When he got bucked off it wouldn’t let him go. He got drug around and possibly stepped on before getting untied. The bull then came back around and stepped on him again and mashed him into the ground. He died the next day after surgery. After the ambulance left they released a bull into the arena. The bull fighters then had a bit of fun. One of the fighters stood on top of the clown’s barrel. The bull was testing the barrel with his head. The fighter then ran down the bulls back. The clown and the fighter were both in the barrel later getting rolled around by the bull. Imagine a 400L wine cask made out of metal. The clown usually is miked up entertaining the crowd in lulls of the rodeo. The announcer to clown interaction is usually pretty funny. The clown often has props. Maybe it’s an oversized squeaky horn or a stick dummy that he says looks like his mother in law. Getting thrown out of the barrel to protect him.

Yeah, the two other guys are in the ring to basically dually help the rider get up and out of the ring if/when they fall off the bull, and also distract the bull to keep it from trampling / goring the bull-rider, once they're on the ground. Alternately to help disentangle the rider from the bull if they fall off but get tangled in the stirrups, reins, or whatever, so they hopefully don't get dragged all over the place or trampled due to being unable to get off/away from the bull timely.

But Casey the only girl was the only one who loved barrel racing where a horse has to run a course around those big wooden barrels as fast as possible without knocking any over, the rider has to give subtle cues and sort of meld with her horse as one unit racing the course.

Texan. If you ever get a chance to attend a rodeo make sure you'll be seeing the events you're interested in. Rodeos like Houston's last several days and feature different events each day and different entertainers each night. For myself, I prefer a smaller venue that's strictly about the skills of the participants...or in the case of bull riding and bareback bronc riding, about fearlessness. I come from a different time. Participants didn't wear helmets and the livestock was truly wild and woolly. That part was a bit intense for me. The skills of bulldogging, calf roping, and maybe barrel racing among others, were my favorite.

Andre, you must attend the 107th Annual in August 2025, "World's Fastest" Livermore Rodeo with 27 chutes. If being the World’s Fastest Rodeo was an Olympic sport…. Livermore Rodeo would win GOLD 🤩

Growing up we always spent the 4th of July at the rodeo ! Then when we lived in RENO We never missed the Gay Rodeo. We had horses Growing up Kids always wanted to ride them. But we were not allowed to let them But if it was a kid we didn't like or wouldn't stop asking. We had a Donkey I was the only one She would let ride Her because I was the one who took care of her every day . Anyway we would tell them sit way back ' no saddle of course ' and hold on tight give her a kick . And the back yard rodeo was on !! Lol & they never would ask again.She also bit & headbutted everyone except me. She would even fallow me to school. My mom wold get a call To come get Her Donkey. But the only one she would move anywhere for was me so I got to take her home and come back .

Houston, Texas here. I’ve been to many rodeos, with having the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo here, which is the largest rodeo in the world. They are a lot of fun. No, Longhorn bulls are not used in rodeos. Thank you for such a great channel, Andre. ♥️

This one I have to watch; as we grew up with them. (Rural Pennsylvania and Maryland) You've got my like, again. My last supervisor, a totally urbanated lady, asked me to PLEASE explain these. LOL This is dangerous, no? NO kidding! 👀👀 This is the reason of men through centuries..."But beautiful women were watching..." do crazy things. OH THE FOOD! Yes. Take some pocket money, the food can't be beat and is usually well below restaurant prices. That little man is ADORABLE. He must be good, most kids only get to ride pigs, sheep and calfs. We were ALL on horses by 10. Thanks for sharing, hon! (Yes, it looks crazy from most other perspectives.)

My mom used to barrel ride when she was a teenager. It's never been my scene, but she likes rodeos...dragged me to some when I was a kid/teen. We had some friends that did the bull riding, bronco riding, calf roping, etc. One of them nearly lost his thumb...it was almost ripped off during a bull ride, just hanging by some flesh and sinew. Luckily, his father-in-law is a surgeon and called a colleague that specialized in hand surgeries, so the doctor was able to save his thumb. If you want to know just how dangerous rodeos can be, watch the movie "8 Seconds."

Rodeo is not limited to Texas. Even some Colleges in the West have Rodeo as a Varsity sport (scholarships). Canada has a very popular and famous rodeo ( The Calgary Stampede), and most Western States have at least one Rodeo. My family have a ranch and riding, and roping (for branding) is an every day thing.

Rodeo, in person, is very exciting. Rodeo is all over the USA, Canada and Mexico. Longhorns are definitely Texan. People put the horns on the grill of their Cadillacs. Funny to see.

Personally, I enjoy the outdoor rodeos, Cheyenne FrontierDays, "Daddy of them all," is big fun. It's at the local county fair rodeo where little cowboys really enjoy themselves! Texas might be bigger, but Wyo is still Wild!

these guys did an amazing job filming themselves, rather than the super interesting event they were at. they couldn't film the rodeo for more than 20 sustained seconds?

Yes, I've been to a rodeo - in Kississimee, Florida. You can see them in many places other than Texas and western states. No, I don't find bull riders attractive, MAYBE a cutting horse or reining horse rider.

Rodeos are all over the West, and not just in Texas. I believe the largest rodeo is in Prescott, AZ. We have been to that rodeo, and they had some buffalo (bison) in it as well. We have also been to one in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Both were very entertaining!
