When I served in the Marines, I was pre-selected to interview for Barracks duty at "8th and I" in Washington DC. There were only 3 of us for the final interview but I didn't make it. Selection is very strict. I did own a blue uniform though as part of my next duty assignment. Those shoes are permanently shined to a mirror finish, same as the brass and vinyl cover on the head gear. What you're seeing, is thousands of hours of training in close-order drill.

Parris Island , South Carolina 1982 United States Marine Corps. , basic training . The first hair cut is usually on the second day . The only question you will hear is. Do you have any bumps , lumps , birth marks , is there any thing on your head besides hair that can be cut by accident ? Then the 30 second haircut starts . All will end up with some fuzz left . There are 3 stages of the 13 week training . In the 3rd stage you will get a high and tight cut , a Motivation cut is what we call it . The hair will be between a half inch to an inch on the top and shaved on each side , with the back tapering down to nothing !!

When I was in high school I was apart of their JROTC. Which is basically an extra curriculum class anyone can take, it’s extremely fun and a great character builder. Anyway I was on the drill team and whenever we did competition they said “No matter what happens, we don’t care if you wet your pants or your pants fall to your ankles. Stay In Formation!” None of that ever happened ofc but it’s true, people loose hats or rifles but still stay in formation. It’s to help with appearance but mainly for the others marching, it definitely throws you off cadence when your missing a member.

As a Marine, we're taught drill, and the manual of arms (the rifle movements) for unit cohesion. These Marines take it to the next level. They train for hours to get each movement down to a count with no commands given. I've seen the Silent Drill team three times. The first was in boot camp in 1977, the second was at Headquarters Marine Corps, Marine Barracks in Washington, DC in 1985 and the third time was in 1992 after I had gotten out at a local Armed Forces day celebration.

A bit late to the conversation but as a Marine I watch this 2 ways 1 with utmost respect and at the same time to see if they break bearing. The Marine did right by not picking up his cover and continued until a point where it could be retrieved by the drill NCO. Also a few minor things that more practice will take care of. Nothing of consequence though. All in all a very good job. Also the drill is by number. You hear the slaps as they do different movements. Thats the cadence count. It marks time and timing. Also when the inspecting NCO does his walk by its a count. Almost like a Band director or drum major in a marching band. You constantly are counting and on a certain number count you perform your movement. This to a lessor degree was taught in boot camp by a common cadence called count cadence count - 1 then cadence -2 then cadence -3 then cadence-4 then cadence then you get count cadence count and all say 1-2-3-4 I love the Marine Corps or something else to that effect.

Those are real rifles with real sharp bayonets. And yes, at one point the "inspected" rifleman had removed his bayonet for safety reason for the toss of the rifle to his Drill Officer. They all have removed their bayonets for the throwing portion of the drill. I do not know whether those rifles can actually shoot bullets or not. I THINK they are real rifles, but since they are strictly for ceremonial use, I reckon they probably are missing their firing pins.

Male military personnel must have a high and tight haircut. This is a haircut that is short on top and shaved on the sides and back. Obviously, older guys tend to go bald. No facial hair is allowed. The only exception to these rules are when fighting in the Middle East where the local customs require beards. My cousin is a retired marine. He still has his high and tight haircut today. Women military personnel cannot have their touching their solders. Or their hair must be up in a bun.
