These videos are so great that I totally forgot about my tortilla in the oven and looked over to see the inside of the oven engulfed in flame. As I yelled fire and frantically looked for the fire extinguisher, my brother, who was in the bathroom, ran out because there was a fire, and all I will say is that he had to change his pants.

Hey Bill, I grew up learning ESL from the day I was born. My dad is deaf, and my parents wanted us to have good grammar, so they chose not to teach us ASL. I only learned to sign every single word in every sentence. I am now 39 years old and I feel ashamed whenever I meet deaf people these days, because I look so stupid not knowing what they're saying when my own father is deaf. I also don't see him that often anymore, so now I'm slowly forgetting words. Every time I meet my Dad I have to ask him how to sign something. It's embarassing and I feel like a terrible son for not having learned ASL by now. These videos mean a lot to me and I really appreciate it. I did donate some money to help you out. My worst fear is not being able to say anything about my Dad at his funeral someday. I would be the biggest piece of crap and would hold it against myself the rest of my life. You're a great teacher. I learned something on Lessons 1 and 2 and now I'm on 3. Of course, I know most of it so far, but some of the newer things I had no idea of. I still use all of the old signs, some so old you didn't even cover them as options :D This will be a fun journey!

@@sign-language Mr. Bill are you deaf?
@sign-language4 жыл бұрын
Yes. I was born hard-of-hearing and as time goes on I became more and more physically Deaf. I live in the Deaf World. I married a Deaf woman, work in the field of Deaf-Studies, hang out with people who can sign, use close-captioning (or subtitles) when I watch videos, seek out open captioned movies, watch the news in ASL, lived at Gallaudet during an internship (Benson Hall), only attend churches that use sign language, have a daughter who attended the Utah School for the Deaf preschool program, have a text-only (no-voice minutes) phone, and devote my time to developing ASL-related resources for others. Question: Are you a member of the "Deaf Community?" Answer: Yes. I've lived my life serving in Deaf organizations, setting up Deaf events, working with other Deaf, teaching ASL, teaching Deaf Studies, etc.) I met my wife (Belinda -- who is Deaf too) at a Deaf church. Our youngest child, Sarah (our fourth) was born with a substantial hearing loss due to having Aperts (a rare syndrome) attended the Utah State School for the Deaf pre-school program. Almost all of my close friends and associates are either Deaf or strongly tied to the Deaf Community. Question: Are you certified? Answer: I hold a doctorate in Deaf Education / Deaf Studies from an accredited university (Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas). I also hold a masters in Deaf Education from Lamar university. As far as I know, I was the first person from Utah to become ASLTA certified. I was a member of ASLTA back when they were still S.I.G.N. (Sign Instructors Guidance Network). I'm now in California. Question: Where did you learn ASL? Answer: Growing up in a small town I started learning ASL from a Deaf woman, (Kathy Hadfield of Brigham City, Utah. She later married Mark Erwin -- so she is now Kathy Erwin.) As I grew older I lived with Deaf roommates, hung out with other Deaf people, read every ASL book I could lay my hands on, and took as many formal classes as I could find -- eventually leading to a doctorate degree in Deaf Education / Deaf Studies. Here are a few of the experiences that influenced me: * Worked as a volunteer at the the Indiana School for the Deaf (as a teacher's assistant in Laura Gaalema's third grade class) * Worked as a volunteer for GLAD Orange County Outreach in California * Worked as a volunteer the (former) Indiana Branch Office of the National Association of the Deaf * Lived on-campus at Gallaudet University during a summer internship program * Took night classes at the Oregon School for the Deaf (Salem). * Participated in a hundreds of hours of "American Judicial System" - related ASL training at California State University Northridge * Attended many (!) workshops * Researched ASL Linguistics, ASL acquisition, and Computer Assisted Language Learning during my doctoral studies Lamar University * Directed/participated in 15 years of "immersion excursions" to exciting places with Deaf co-hosts * Directing an interpreter-training program for Davis County school district during which I interviewed, hired, and worked closely with many (over 30) Deaf guest-speakers and/or trainers * And lately I spend much of my time discussing the nuances of ASL with my d/Deaf colleagues at work and online. Question: What kind of experience do you have teaching ASL? Answer: I taught ASL at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah for over a decade. I have taught ASL classes and/or workshops at the Utah Community Center for the Deaf, the IRS, Hill Air Force Base, Defense Depot Ogden Utah, Mills Montessori School, the Newgate Mall, Your Community Connection of Ogden, Clearfield Community Schools, Davis County School District, Weber County School District, Ogden City Corporation, The Sign Language Studio, Lifeprint Institute, Lamar University in Beaumont Texas, The Sign Language Association, ASL University, California State University--Sacramento, and dozens of other places. As of this writing I am a full-time, tenured, full professor of American Sign Language and Deaf Studies. Teaching ASL is my life's work. Update: Since I wrote the above, I've added "Guyana, South America" to the list. Guyana was by far the hardest work -- and the most fun.] Update: Add Singapore to the list. I've done two separate week-long sign language-related workshops for the National Association for the Deaf (in Singapore).

I signed “pigeon sign” (correct me if I spelt that incorrectly) They try teaching me when they can, but we both work a lot so we do not end up making much time to go over grammar. I am shocked with how much grammar I do not know. 😯 I plan on going to school for ASL this fall! Thank you Bill for making these videos and sharing sign with the world! Skippable video ads (ads at the start of a video that a viewer can skip after five seconds) - you get paid if a viewer watches the whole ad (or at least 30 seconds if it's longer)." Dr. Vicars, how do you sign a Great-Great-Great Grandfather or Great-Great-Great Grandmother as in generations ago?
@sign-language15 күн бұрын
A couple of ways. First way uses a sign that looks like a one-handed version of "next" but it goes backwards toward (and angled a little above) the dominant shoulder. You do the arc movement once for each "great" and then sign grandfather. (I do not expect you to be able to visualize that sign just from a text description -- but rather it is a note to myself to record that next time I'm in front of my video camera in my studio.) The other main way is to do the sign "large" but use the movement of "big" (that doesn't twist the forearms) and do it in a series of steps becoming wider with each step. Each step corresponds with one "great" in the phrase great, great, great grandfather. There is another way but it is somewhat complex and "hard" for some people to sign and that is to combine one of the previous methods and simultaneously count 1, 2, 3 (incrementing for each great) on the non-dominant hand.

Is rhetorical “why?” the same as “because”? We have to put our eyebrows up to explain because?
@sign-language Жыл бұрын
Think of rhetorical “why?” and the sign for “because” as different signs that have overlapping (but not completely similar) uses. Think of WHY-[rhetorical] as meaning, "Do you want to know why? Well I'll tell you, the reason why is ... blah, blah, blah." Think of the sign BECAUSE as meaning "due to" or "the reason is..." Rhetorical WHY is often used to introduce a reason without expecting an answer. It's a way to set up an explanation. For instance, a signer might use a rhetorical why to pose and then answer a question such as "Why am I late? Because there was traffic." -- which might be signed as: IX-[me] LATE WHY-[rhet]? TRAFFIC! You could accomplish the same thing without the extra pause and non-manual markers by simply signing IX-[me] LATE BECAUSE TRAFFIC. Notice that when using BECAUSE you don't need to raise your eyebrows because you are not being rhetorical you are just making a simple statement. On a personal note, I consider the emphasis of WHY-[rhetorical] in typical ASL instruction and curricula to sometimes be beyond what is actually reflected in typical everyday signing. Most of us don't use WHY-[rhetorical] or similar rhetorical questions anywhere to the extent that curricula would have you believing.

Any reason why oral components aren't used ? Especially when using AMA..? Thanks in advance !
@sign-language Жыл бұрын
You are using the abbreviation "AMA." To me that stands for American Medical Association. What does "AMA" stand for in your question? American Manual Alphabet? Teaching ASL without voicing is a common method and is endorsed by many Deaf educators and members of the Deaf community. Here's why: Cultural Respect: ASL is a visual language, and the Deaf community has a unique culture that often centers around the visual experience. Teaching ASL without voicing respects this culture. Enhanced Learning: When learning ASL without the interference of a spoken language, students often find that they develop a more intuitive grasp of the language. It forces the learner to focus on the handshapes, movements, and facial expressions which are all integral components of ASL. Avoids Confusion: ASL has its own grammar and sentence structure, which is (often) different from English. Voicing while signing might lead learners to mix English grammar with ASL, leading to Pidgin Signed English (PSE) rather than true ASL. Immersive Experience: Just like when one is immersed in a foreign country to learn a new spoken language, immersing oneself in pure ASL without voicing provides a deeper and more authentic learning experience.

@@sign-language Thank you for your time to answer me 😊😊 And, yes - I was under the impression that A.M.A stands for American Manual Alphabet, I´m really sorry that I´m totally wrong here! I have absolutely no knowledge of the American Medical Association, I just wouldn´t know so I of course didn´t make any such connection. If I have in some way offened you by this, I do beg your pardon. What´s the correct abbreviation of the American Manual Alphabet ? To continue with my question, I wasn´t talking about voicing, that´s not what I ment about the oral component which is commonly used simultanious with the manual componants, and of course all the others. I am fully aware of what voicing and Signing simultanious does to the Sign Language, I´m not questioning this at all. I was just curious to find out. The Sign Language that I know, has many homonyms, and also what´s generally known as genuine Signs. which do not have a oral component that totally differs from the spoken language. ( I´m sure you have this also in ASL, American Sign Language - anyway, it would surprise me very much if not.) Other Signs, like "school" have the spoken word to some extend anyway, as an oral component which is preforming the mouth like an "o" - which may differ of course depending who´s Signing. I will definitely not argue with the American Sign Language teachers, i for one would find it very differcult to not see the whole picture/screen - so to say. I would have to focus too much on just the fingers, but we just do it another way. There´s assimilation in our Manual Alphabet so the vocals are often just preformed as an oral component, and the consonants are fingerspelled. Often, but not always. It depends if the name, word etc is well known or not. So for us, it´s very important to make use of the oral componant aswell as the manual. Btw, (by the way) H.A is the abbreviation for our Manual Alphabet. Handalfabetet. Yes, I´m Swedish and started to learn how to Sign for like 50 years ago, or strictly speaking - started to learn some Signs, then and also H.A.= Swedish Manual Alphabet. Later I learned much more Sign Language, and also about it. The Swedish one, I better say. You could say that I´m a learning person, I am curious about many things. I love to learn and find out! 😊😊 Best! / Helena

Same here. And to me, the more uncommon names make me doubt if I'm reading the signs right because I don't know where it's heading. If someone said the first three letter of "Sarah" being "Sar", I kinda know where it's going. But once I see "Este" as a first four letters of "Estefanny" I'm now really wondering where this leads.
