Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. You can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here right now and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

How would "Today will-be warm, now still cold" be for a vocabulary teaching phrase? It contains different types of pairings, and the spatial pairings are particularly helpful to me because of my spatial acuity.
@sign-language2 жыл бұрын
Such a sentence presupposes a context in which it is morning and in which the conversation partners or audience are aware that it has been could. You could sign: TODAY FUTURE WARM. NOW? COLD. The version of NOW that you use in that sentence would likely be the "right now" inflection of NOW using an emphasized double movement and slightly extended arms. The English word "still" doesn't 100% match the ASL sign STILL in such a sentence. "Still" assumes that the conversation partner or audience is aware that it has been cold but is perhaps unaware if it is still could. Why would they be unaware? The person must be inside where it is temperature controlled. So you'd end up signing something like: OUTSIDE? STILL COLD. LATER TODAY? WARM WILL! Note that the WILL at the end is not for purposes of establishing tense -- rather it is for confirmation. You've already established the tense via the signs LATER TODAY. There are dozens of ways we could make that sentence work. For example: NOW? COLD. AFTERNOON? WARM. The word "still" is used to acknowledge that the conversation partner knew it was cold and confirm to the conversation partner that the cold situation remains in effect. Again though, the STILL sign is unlikely in such an ASL sentence because we can sign things like: UP-TO-NOW COLD. NOW AFTERNOON WARM = It has been and still is cold. This afternoon it will be warm. The more context or shared knowledge the conversation participants have -- the fewer signs needed: NOW? COLD. AFTERNOON? WARM.
@thrivinginamber26422 жыл бұрын
That totally reminds me of conversations with my German teacher, who often made ASL facial expressions and threw a sign out here and there when asking one word questions (phrased confirmationally, I think).

(10:30) Katelyn silently judging Bill for waking up at 10 am me: who wakes up at 10am 💧👁👄👁💧

Rest of that discussion: Me: No, actually I wake up at 6AM same as you. Its a habit due to needing to get t he kids off to school. Katelyn: Habbit? Me: No, habit, 1 "b" -- you may be thinking of Hobbit -- those are the folks with big feet. ------------- Ahaha -- great times. Katelyn was such a good sport -- I was fortunate to have such a great sidekick!

I love these videos as a study tool, but I really with there was some sort of subtitling for when Bill goes into random conversations with his guests that don't use the vocabulary we've learned previously. I get lost so quickly in trying to follow him 😅
@sign-language4 жыл бұрын
Tip: I recommend you "not" worry about the added conversations the first time through the series. The trick is on the first time through focus on picking up the target vocabulary and sentences. Then after you have completed a level go back and rewatch the same level again and you will note that you are "magically" picking up on "more" of the side conversations.

Does ASL use 24 hours to establish an a.m./p.m.? Or should I use the "morning, afternoon, evening" signs to do that (similar to what you said/signed for "midnight" at 35:50 )?
@sign-language10 ай бұрын
ASL heavily uses context for time. Then we use the signs for morning, afternoon, or evening as needed to clarify the time of day. We do "not" use 24 hour time. That would be very cool but nope -- it is not part of ASL.

Dr. Bill, I was wondering if the sentence at 22:50 would make sense if you signed as SNOWMAN YOU LIKE MAKE instead? Or is it important for like to be at the end?
@sign-language2 жыл бұрын
Similar to English and other languages -- ASL can form sentences in multiple ways. So, yes, your suggestion works fine. Consider also this version: YOU LIKE MAKE SNOWMAN YOU? (That uses something we call "pronoun copy" at the end). Homework for you : Read the article at the following link: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/subject-verb-object-asl-sentence-structure.htm Then check out this article: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/store-i-go-the-myth.htm ("X" out of any advertising that shows up). Then see this link: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/topics/topic-comment.htm Enjoy!
